Hotel El Rancho

My room was really nice, but the parking lot couldn’t get much worse.

Great history. Beautiful lobby. Great store. Great food. Some parts needed renovation. Couldn't drink in the bar w our 12yr old even though it was adjacent to the restaurant. Messed up our food and drink order. Tv was in a weird spot on the wall. Pool wasnt open.

Great room. The staff were exceptional. The young lady I worked in the bar was incredible. All the staff I dealt with were very friendly and professional. The parking lot was convenient.

Parking lot needs to be redone

Very quaint hotel loved the historical significance. Elevator was out of service so it was a bit of a pain. Also, room would not cool below 79 degrees so we had to open the windows on a 23 degree night to make it bearable. But hey it’s an old hotel so things happen. Bar certainly had character and characters. Lots of folks yelling at each other in bar. One employee scolded by another for knocking our wine over. Patrons hollering at each other. Nice lobby fireplace on a cold December night.

Hotel was nicely refurbished keeping the old style but updating. Every staff member was so kind and helpful. The pool was closed during our stay. That would have been nice to use.

Pool was closed big disappointment. Bathroom very small.

This place is absolutely stunning. The cleanliness is off the charts. They've really done an amazing job at preserving history. This is more than a stay. It's an experience. All of the staff have been super professional and the security constantly being around is such a wonderfully safe feeling. The history of this place is just amazing. We'll definitely stay again.

Check in was easy however we were told upon arrival the elevator isn’t working. My mother is handicapped and our room was on floor 2. Got to the room and even though my confirmation shows I reserved a room with two queens was given a room with one king bed. I went down and let them know, they switched rooms for us to a room with one bed and one pull out couch. That’s fine. The room smelled of sewage the entire time. There is no AC in the hotel anywhere, luckily we didn’t need that. We ate at the restaurant. The services was terrible but the food was great. A little pricey. Great historical place to see, but not the best to stay overnight.

This is a great property and excellent memorabilia. However the handicap accessibility is lacking. If they would prevent parking in front of the patio path, and or add a side ramp to get down to it we could have been much happier.

The Hotel is very unique. A different experience. Cool decor. The room we were in was clean looking but definitely smelled like mildew. We only stayed one night so we let it go. The bathroom was so tiny! It reminded me of a bathroom you might see in an RV. The beds were very firm but ok for the night. My husband said the trains kept waking him up, but I never heard them. The elevator was broken so using the steep stairs was unexpected. Overall we would probably stay again on the our way through. The outside of building could really use some updating. Would help alot with appeal!

Room was clean, welcoming,and definitely worth the price. The hotel was decorated beautifully and filled with things to intrigue guests. Definitely would stay again.

We loved our stay! What a cool old, but well kept hotel. Our room was spotless and the bed was comfy. We both slept well. Definitely want to stay here again!

Interesting historical hotel with fun decor. The room was tiny but manageable. Room was clean with a nice bed. The only issue was that even though the hotel was not full I was given a room near the old elevator which was noisy. Overall a good stay.

Bathroom was tiny, size of a closet right next to the bed and bed pushed up against the wall so had to climb over to get out. All a bit cramped.

I enjoyed my visit and would recommend. I stayed in the main hotel which has the feel of an old western lodge. The room was fairly small but it was very clean, had cool retro decorations, and the king bed was comfortable. Plenty of parking, quiet, and powerful internet. I ate dinner and breakfast at the hotel’s restaurant, both meals were delicious and reasonably priced.

Charming public areas. Rooms are a bit behind the times---poor lighting, couldn't get room warmer than 68, and so on

We loved the nostalgia. Bed was comfortable. Bathroom was extremely small. As petite as i am I had a hard time turning in there. AC didn't cool the security man came in and checked it but it still didn't cool. Thank goodness for the big ceiling fan it made it tolerable. The thermostat said it was 77 in the morning when we got up. The temperature outside was really nice 52.The food and service was wonderful we ate both dinner and breakfast.. The security guard was really nice. I asked if our car would be safe because some young man approached me in the parking lot and asked me if I wanted to buy a ring. He assured me my car would be safe. It was good . The parking was cramped but I understand it is a historical place. Doorman was very nice. All the staff were very nice.

Not anything terribly luxurious. But had a cool little vibe if you like a unique location. Was very clean but a little loud because it’s right near the freeway.

Came for the history and uniqueness. Staff was friendly. Room was cute and comfortable. Only complaints were the ac is turned off in the winter but being on the 3rd floor it was 80 degrees in the room with the heater turned off. Fan on and windows being opened did not bring the temp down at all. It was a long, long, hot, sleepless night. The other was the toilet being so close to the wall you pretty much had to sit sideways but the bathroom being small it couldn’t go anywhere else so not much to fix there.

The El Rancho is an historic hotel and a true gem! We were there on a Friday night and the 49er Bar was hoppin! We had a nice dinner in the restaurant and did a little shopping in the nicely stocked gift shop. There is so much to look at throughout the two- story lobby. Beautiful Indian rugs and crafts, photographs, and memorabilia from when the hotel was built in 1937. Each room is named after a famous movie star of the Hollywood glory days- and of course that includes many Western movies that were filmed near Gallup. We were in #207, the Joel McCrea room. We had a comfy king-size bed, and everything you need- just not an abundance of room, so it’s a good thing it was me and my husband! But it was beautifully updated in a Western theme, with unique touches here and there! Loved the shower curtain and “do not disturb door tassels ”!

Great place We booked online and got to the hotel they had some issues with air conditioning and rooms but accommodated us with an upgraded room. So appreciate them for getting us into a room after a long day of driving

The lobby was very unique and beautiful. The service desk personnel were great. My only issue was the restaurant which had very good reviews. I was seated promptly but then sat there for 30 minutes and no one took my order so I left and went to a different restaurant.

Best hotel in Gallup, maybe even the Southwest. We had an amazing stay. We ate at their restaurant, which was excellent, both the food and the service. We received a free tour from their security guard too, which helped us have a deeper appreciation for the city and the hotel’s history. We will be back!

This is my second visit to the El Ranco. The staff are professional and kind. The rooms are spotlessly clean. The beds are comfortable. The linens are crisp and scent-free. The bar & restaurant serve top notch beverages and hearty, delicious New Mexican food. There is a treasure trove of memorabilia from Westerns filmed in the area for guests to view and a hand-painted mural in the lobby that depicts the history of the Southwest. I found it wildly educational. I love how the property is being beautifully restored with top quality materials and finishes this historic hotel deserves, and how the historic elements are being preserved.

In my business, I live by customer service, so, I know it when I see it. I have never seen better customer service than at El Rancho. Truly extraordinary staff, even down to the little things.

Bathroom clean. Bed medium/poor quality support. Linens fresh clean. Decor southwest ranch Route 66 and movie star memorabilia. Rooms very small. Staff slow at check in. 1 clerk. 1 customer ahead of me. I waited 15 minutes. Appetizers from attached restaurant good quality. Street noise on first floor.

The hotel itself is beautiful and the history behind it is amazing and a must see. Front desk staff was fantastic. The issue we had was the restaurant and the “ historian.” We had dinner in which I asked for red on my enchiladas, it came out with green instead. Told waitress and she brought it out with red ontop with Parmesan cheese ontop. Cut into it and all they did was pour red ontop of the green. Never seen that. Also, they shotlet patrons know it’s only a two drink maximum when they get there. Only was allowed two drinks. Since we were traveling we want to relax for the night. After dinner we came down to sit by the fire. But were greeted very rudely by an elderly man and the first thing out of his mouth was “there’s not any alcohol in those glasses?” Not even a “hi, my name is….” The bartender mentioned we could take our last drink with us to our room so we did and decided to sit by fire. NOT!!! So, the rest of the night we felt like we were in jail since we had to stay in our room to finish our drinks. By this time we were so frustrated with everything, we hung out in our room. We came out to look around at the hotel but once again the historian watched our every move. Ridiculous!! Very sad because the place is stunning and the history behind it is very interesting. We are from Albuquerque and know all about Gallup and the news it provides. Still worth a stop, but don’t expect too much from service in the food part.

Staff was pleasant, attentive and accommodating. The chicken mole in their dining room was excellent. The decor in the lobby was unique and very interesting. Great to stay for arriving later in the afternoon because good food, a bar and lots of things to read on the walls provides a 1 stop place without having to get in the car again. Beds were very comfortable. Hear train horns through the night but that can’t be avoided because of the cross country railroad.

Beautiful building and amazing rooms. Only downside is that the surrounding area is super sketchy - a lot of homeless and drug activity

Awesome atmosphere, history, and some of the most incredible and friendly customer service from front desk staff! They always made my stay super easy and convenient. My only concern is the lack of area to let dogs go potty. There's only one grassy spot around the whole premises and it's got a sign for no dogs on the grass. I believe they're still undergoing more renovations, so for a dog friendly hotel, I hope their final status will have better areas to accommodate the pets going to the bathroom.

Truly among the coolest spots I’ve ever stayed. Walked in and they had a full hearth?? Okay man - that’s cool. Bed was comfy, room was clean, truly a great location for road trippers - great, great spot to stay

So glad we stayed here. Property is beautiful and the restaurant had delicious food. I got the Mac n cheese with green chilies and I loved every bite. My husband got a burrito platter and he really liked it. Make sure to open the secret door at the top of the stairs on the 2nd floor. You have to pull a book forward on the bookshelf. Really cool. So much history here and the employees were beyond helpful. I would recommend gassing up before you get into town, though. We stopped at a station right next door in the morning and I've never felt more uneasy in my life. The cashier was even nervous about one man in the store. While the hotel feels very safe, the surrounding area does not. Gallup is not the most wholesome town.

The property is located in a noisy area with lots of motorists and motorcycles. There are transient people in the area. This is an historic property which was a movie making hub in the 1930s and 40s. It is still operational as a museum to that time. Updates needed although it is clean and the people are nice.

Excellent vintage hotel with historic significance that has been updated yet still harkens back to earlier years. Great location, historic charm. Food and drinks were fantastic as well as the staff attention and kindness. Highly recommend!

Although iconic, I would opt to just have dinner here and not stay the night. Area didn’t seem safe.

Property was great. Rooms were very clean and the hotel lobby was like stepping back in time and very interesting. The only downside was the area around was kind of sketchy , but the hotel has security constantly making rounds and we never felt unsafe.

Quite a trip down memory lane! This hotel is worth a visit just for the nostalgia factor, and the delicious food in the hotel restaraunt is quite a bonus.

This place is cool and has a nice vibe. The only downside is the bathroom is tiny (which I understand) and the restaurant food is not the best.

The property, history, and nostalgic feeling was excellent. The fact it was on route 66 just put the exclamation point on it. Unfortunately the restaurant lounge was really bad. Employees focused on the locals and disregarded the actual customers. The food was certainly not what I expected for this hotel. The Old Fashioned was a sweet mess. Such a shame, considering the history of the hotel itself. Big changes required from my perspective, otherwise you will risk financial losses associated to the restaurant lounge.
