Royal Clifton Hotel

The hotel was in a nice area and they did their best to help and keep the hotel clean but they could improve their customer service specially when the guess arrives as I arrive around 15:30 they told me to come back around 16:00 and don’t park my car in the hotel car park and when I came back around 16:00 they said my room stil not ready since a guy with the dog is still there! Eventually after waiting for 20 min in the queue I got the key for my room but had to park outside the hotel until there was space and also the WiFi is only available in public places and you have to pay £7 extra

We have stayed here many years and always enjoyed it but last year they said pool area would be opening up again and this year its still not open and we liked sitting in the conservatory at night which was lovely just a wasted space now it's a shame we might change hotels next year because of this..

Great location, and for the price we paid I couldn't complain. The hotel is big and old, and obviously well past it's glory days of the past - however it's clean and I enjoyed exploring the nooks and crannys of this charming old building. You get what you pay for, and I was happy with this place for the price - a family room with 2 bedrooms for £50 per night. The swimming pool/spa area was closed for rennovation, parking is £5 per night if you pay inside the hotel, WiFi is also an extra charge. There is a Wetherspoons around the corner if you'd prefer to have breakfast there instead of paying for the hotel breakfast (which was OK - full English Breakfast buffet of average quality and a few cereals) The hotel is in a perfect location with a nice park in front and Lord Street behind, walking distrance to the pier, fairgrounds and main shopping areas.

This is a lovely hotel. I dont think you could wish for a better location. All the staff are helpful and friendly and the breakfast is well worth the money. Room was roomy, clean and quiet. On site car parking is a bonus but to be honest, parking in Southport is plentiful anyway. Id really recommend this hotel as value for money. Shame the pool was closed though....didnt notice that when booking.

Couldn’t even have a hot shower or a shower or bath no hot water not very happy at all also no spa facilities which was never mentioned disgusting

We enjoyed our one night stay very much, our room was lovely and well worth the price. Unfortunately our stay was let down by poor service at the hotel bar. The lady who served us with our drinks was very rude, to the point where we felt uncomfortable and left without finishing them. She had a very abrupt manner and barely acknowledged me when I asked a question, she carried on talking to her colleague and just shoved a card machine at me sideways without telling me the price or saying thank you. She just had a horrible attitude. I think she must have got on to my shock because then she spent the rest of the time we were there making us very uncomfortable, staring at us and smirking, which is why we left our drinks unfinished. Couldn’t understand her attitude at all and we would have stayed and enjoyed a few more drinks if it weren’t for her, found her to be extremely unprofessional.

Was fairly nice. I emailed and had no response and the lock was broken on the door so we did get stuck in our room! Hotel parking is advertised at £5 but it is actually £10 for 24 hours. However, it was clean, comfortable and staff were friendly!

Easy to walk into town. Parking available at a fee. Excellent breakfast. Friendly staff. Hope hotel continues to be refreshed

The lifts didn’t work, I saw one older lady having to sit and recover on the stairs. My door didn’t lock, I had to raise it with the front desk. Breakfast ended at just 10:00am and the condition of the whole place was very dated and tired. Definitely not worth the money.

Reasonable stay for the price. The first room we were given had stains on the walls and animal fur all over the carpet but we were offered another room when we complained. The second room was more acceptable. The bathroom was smaller, tired with poor water pressure.

The photo are deceiving! The building is hot. The bed was dirty. The carpet was stained.

There was a sleeve from cigarette filters on the bed on arrival and blonde hair by the kettle and shards of glass in the carpet

The shower was excellent. The building was tired and shabby inside and out. The room did not have a sea view, or tissues, or usable toilet tissues, or a fridge or a safe. The windows were filthy. The bed was comfortable. The bedside lights were so far from the bed you had to get up to turn them on or off. There was no fresh drinking water in the room or available. The breakfast looked inedible so I didn’t eat it. The bins in the room were not emptied in the 4 days I stayed there. The hand wash was in the shower so you couldn’t use it and there was no shelf in the shower for shower gel etc. I would not recommend it but the bed was comfortable and the shower was large and the water hot.

I booked a sea view room. Stunning views over the Promenade. Look, it’s a very old hotel, so maintenance is needed constantly. Creaking floor boards and dated corridors. That comes with the territory. My room was superb, clean and bright. I was pleasantly surprised by the breakfast (12.50) if a walk in. Piping hot, good selection, spotlessly clean. Comfortable bed, nice and quiet, very helpful reception staff.

Our second stay in this hotel. Check in staff very friendly, room we were allocated was roomy, comfortable and clean, breakfast fairly standard (with very hard working staff).

Lovely clean rooms & lounge. Shame about the exterior but workis in progress to renovate it. Scaffolding had been erected. Staff very helpful & friendly. 24 hour parking for £5.

Property very nice but Dated also needs cleaning also no room service unless you stay for a week couldn’t see out of windows not been cleaned for months

The bathroom of the bedroom had short dark hair everywhere on the floors.

The hotel has recently been refurbed and our corner rear room was initially v clean and comfy, overlooking an unkempt small garden area. The windows were dirty and the frames rotten, but internally there were no problems. BUT - after 2 of our 4 night stay we complained that nobody had been to service the room. The receptionist insisted that info was given online and in a letter we should have been given on arrival. No way. Their policy is to only clean after 5 nights! We were v annoyed as we had used up the one tiny set of toiletries given and our towels were dirty, etc. etc. We had to fetch daily all such items from her, and also tea/ coffee supplies. Nobody cleaned out our mounting bins or made our bed. It was like being in an apt with no benefits, not even a toilet brush which was a clear necessity with the weak functioning flush! Our wet towels remained in a heap , cluttering the bathroom floor. Another problem-There was a noisy drunken group of women staying who drank outside till turned 3 am , ruining our sleep. Not the hotel’s fault, but it didn’t help! The second night it took the security guard nearly 3 hrs to arrive and eventually stop them shouting. Annoyingly I booked early with no refund and I noticed that prices had dropped nearer the time, so watch out for changing rates.

My room was far more spacious than I thought I had a sitting room too the bathroom was big as well with a corner bath it’s a shame the jacuzzi wasn’t working.

An old hotel in need of an upgrade . Room was extremely hot no way of controlling temperature.

Some good things to say about the Royal Clifton, and others not so good. Good points: comfortable room, good breakfast, convenient location. Not so good: Car parking was an extra £5 (not stated on website), no early check-in available (arrived a little earlier than expected and asked at reception on off chance, but was told I'd have to go away and come back). Also a bit of a disturbance in the hotel involving some other guests, who were noisy at night and which ended up with the police being called. That wasn't the hotel's fault though. Also leisure facilities not currently open

This is a good hotel, pleasant staff, easy check-in. Room was clean, tidy, spacious. This hotel has a nice feel to it an a little bar with comfy seating space. It is in a good location, most amenities within walking distance. Would stay here again.

Had a great time. We had a sea-facing room, which was well equipped and looked freshly decorated.10 mins away from the usual pubs on Lord St

The reception booked us in and put in to room 101 it was dark but clean, but at approximately 6.00 in the morning a generator/air conditioning unit started up out side the windowcand it was realy loud and did not stop until about 9.15, it was very bad. We complained at reception and they changed our room straight away to a just better room.

Room was next to a nightclub which was that loud I gave up trying to sleep at 3am and had to move rooms, staff weren’t happy about moving me rooms and I want a refund I had no sleep and a bad taste in my mouth from the stay! I love Southport and I go often but I won’t be returning to this hotel! Refund please.

My son and myself stayed for 2 nights. There was no hot water, it was luke warm at best.No plug sockets in single bedroom ???. Remote for tv didnt work. We'll probably avoid this one next year.

Lovely place to stay but the heating is stuck on constantly so the heat is unbearable in the rooms

No heating on in the room, reception staff slow and unhelpful, car parking on site very limited although plenty of parking on the road outside if you have the app to do it

Visited for work and booked last minute. Service excellent and we were given a beautiful room which was excellent value. We could hear the music from downstairs but this stopped at 11 and had a great night sleep. Wish we could have stayed longer.

Shabby, dated, not clean, cluttered lobby, common areas and rooms; corridors and our room were overheated like a nursing home. Could not turn heat down in our room. No daily housekeeping services. Terse front desk staff. Tiny double bed in a room overlooking dumpsters both coils of electrical wiring (live, in service) sitting in a puddle of rain runoff on a flat area or roof between two wings of the hotel. Floors squeaked loudly with every step, both water taps in the bathroom dispensed hot water. Decaf instant coffee only for the in-room coffee maker. Would not return for any reason.

Solo traveling first room back and beyond dark dingy asked any chance of moving lovely Welsh girl on desk sorted me right out even ended up staying an extra night so thanks to her

A very good location overlooking the promenade, but only a few hundred yards from Lord Street - Southport's main street. It's a hotel in the 'grand' style, rather too big now and some parts are clearly in need of modernisation and repair, but all public areas are clean and very nicely decorated. Large lounge/bar area. Full breakfast available, with plenty of choice. Lots of parking space at the front of the hotel.

So central. The town is at your feet. Nice room too.

Hotel is an old hotel so rooms are dated which i prefer but bathroom modern. Couldn't fault cleanliness all over the hotel. Staff friendly and helpful. Bar not open all the while but can understand for thus time of year. Buffet breakfast was excellent plenty to choose from. Overall excellent 2 days.

We had a comfortable stay and the hotel is in a very convenient location. The lack of options for a continental breakfast was disappointing with no variety day to day.

Hotel was clean, no food, restaurant shut, nice bar area. room was ok good shower. The people that fetch dogs shouldn't be allowed glad it didn't howl all night. People in corridors noisy, the whole hotel creaks very loud creaking its a nuisance, sounds like an old sailing ship. If you like to hear constant creaking and dogs this is the hotel for you.

Stayed here for a surprise treat but was extremely disappointed, Asked for a nice family room as it was a special occasion! The room we got was at the very back of the hotel with a view of a fire escape and the backs of other buildings with a smell of cigarette smoke coming through the child's bedroom window which i could not close. Parking was an extra £5.00 a night Eating options were very limited and the cook was extremely rude and unaccommodating , hours are restricted for dinner 5.30 till 7.30 however we went in at 7 and half of the already small menu was unavailable and he was quote "not cooking anymore you should have come earlier" We don't finish work till half past 6!! Think we had a lucky escape as it looked a bit like nursing home food and not at all child friendly, Both myself and my husband are covered in itchy lumps which we seem to have got at night in the room and a Doctors appointment will verify what they are. Also the lift to our area didn't work on arrival so had to carry everything upstairs with a pram and a 4 year old. We will not be returning

Found a dirty pair of ladies knickers in the room when checked in. First room was dark and dingy and furthest away from reception when the hotel was almost empty. Breakfast was awful and greasy.
