Highland Dell Lodge

Very quaint hotel with a view of the river. Breakfast was continental; dinner was in the dining room or outside on the patio. Only issue was that there is no elevator and rooms are upstairs. I struggled with my bags up and down stairs. There was staff there but they paid no attention. Other older guests were there so I’m not sure how they managed.

It was nice having the balcony looking out at the river. Nice having the bar and restaurant. The hours were very limited but still nice. Very friendly staff. The "breakfast" was ok, we thought there would be better selection. Was easy to walk around Monte Rio area, which we really like. The Lodge has lots of character and we enjoyed our stay.

A nice, clean old lodge on the river. Rooms are small but if you get one facing the river they have a small but adequate deck which is highly recommend. Breakfast is included which has a nice selection of breads, fruits and other continental offerings. I’d definitely go back.

Great place to stay right on the Russian river, great breakfast unfortunately their Resturant was closed for dinner the night we stayed.

The property has a dining room open Friday-Sat, but not when we were there. Breakfast was served there.

A nice lodge in the middle of the redwoods. Breakfast included and convenient parking provided. Property overlooks the Russian River. No elevator, so you must be able to walk up for upper level rooms.

Lovely area, charming. Too bad that the only access from hotel to the river and small deck involved stairs, several flights. And stairs only to our room.

The lodge is a very nice building situated off the beaten path, next to The Russian River. The room was cozy and basic. They have a restaurant and bar but was closed on Wednesday. The reason I gave it four stars is because: 1) We arrived around 5, hungry and dissapointed to find out the restaurant was closed. 2) This being the case and because of it's remote location, there are not a lot of choices. It would have been nice to know ahead of time or have a sheet with information as to where to eat. The golf course, about two miles from the lodge, seemed like the only choice. 3) We were told to let ourselves in when we got back from dinner (the desk person left after checking us in) and to lock the front door when we got back. It does say on their information that the front desk is staffed during limited hours. The old lodge is very nice, udated, well kept but considering there was only one other couple staying, that we noticed, we didn't feel the front desk staff was very welcoming.

Loved our stay! Room was quaint and comfortable. Housekeeping spotless. We enjoyed a tasty dinner in the restaurant. Highly recommend a stay here.

We had a wonderful couple of days staying on the Russian River. The location of the B&B is perfect and absolutely stunning. We enjoyed swimming directly off the small dock and watching the sunset. However, a few things in the B&B let our stay down. I had read lots of reviews that said it was clean. In our room there was so much dust on the bed frames, skirting boards and picture frames, it looked like it hadn’t been dusted in a long time. Behind and under the furniture was even worse. The shower curtain in the bathroom was mouldy and we had issues with the shower. We did speak to a member of staff who said that several guests had complained about it and that someone would look at it when we were out for the day. On our return, I spoke to the owner and she said she knew nothing about it and would send someone up to look at it. He did arrive promptly but seemed dismissive of the problem and that ‘was the way showers are in California’ (it felt like we were being jet washed when using it). Our shower in the hotel in San Francisco was fine. He did look at it and helped us to get a better pressure, but did concede that there was a problem with it. I have read the reviews about lack of kettle, fridge, foldable seats in the room and reluctance to provide ice and glasses, which they did give us (two wine glasses but I couldn’t negotiate glass water glasses so ended up with plastic cups!). Finally, we had expected a warm and friendly welcome which wasn’t very forthcoming.

My husband & I spent 2 nights at Highland Dell Lodge. The rooms are on the small side but the Lodge is spotless, comfortable & charming. The owners were on site & very friendly & helpful. We had a German dinner in their bar area. It's rare to find authentic German food. Bratwurst was excellent. Also came with continental breakfast which was well presented & very good. We were there in March so Monte Rio was quiet. Made for a perfect relaxing getaway. I would definitely recommend this lodge !

Really nice location. Clean (albeit a few cobwebs in the room) updated older property. Had a nice vibe reminiscent of days gone by. Very accommodating innkeepers- friendly and efficient in meeting our needs. Would have loved to have had a tea kettle and a mini fridge in the room, though space is tight. We would go back again.

Rooms were clean, free parking, friendly staff. We will be back

The property is charming but dated. Room was clean but not in good shape. There is a big stain above our bed with prior leek or collapse sealing. When we walked in we smell chemicals that probably were use to clean the room. The front desk gave us a fan to air it out, but never offered to change the room. Smell subsided but never went away. For B&B breakfast was mediocre, small continental breakfast like in motel. Location is great, right on the bank of Russian river, but to get to it is a challenge.

The location was lovely. The room was smaller than my spare bedroom with no closet or storage for your suitcase which would have been fine if there was more than 2’ft space on either side of the bed and about 4 ft from the foot of the bed to the door. You are given two keys, one for your room and one for the exterior doors and the patrons are responsible to lock those doors. Which again would be fine if everyone did that. Each time we left and returned the exterior doors (front door, door to go to the river, etc.) were left unlocked. When we came back from dinner after 10, the front door was open. Oh and, the Inns bar and restaurant were closed while we were there. I wish someone would have shared that beforehand. The exterior is filthy. The chairs out back and your room patio chairs are Covered with bird poo and spiders. We had to clean them before sitting. Luckily, the breakfast had good stuff and the coffee was good.

Comfortable bed and very. Pleasantly air conditioned. Decent continental breakfast. But not quite worth the price-- not a 4 or 5 star experience. Room was very small with only one small straight chair on which towels were placed, since there was no other location for them. Tiny sink in the room with almost no place to put things down. Very small bathroom. Noise from guests walking in room above.

No AC. Room was smaller than depicted in photos. Front Room door inadequate to silence noises from hall. Room walls thin and do not keep out sound from adjacent rooms.

Found it inconvenient that the sink wasn’t in bathroom. Also room slants.

The Highland Dell was an enjoyable stay for us. Our room, 102, was interesting. There was no thermometer setting available but I assume it was because it was certified as Green and all rooms were monitored as a whole. Room was relatively small but very clean. No closet, bathroom consisted of a toilet and shower. Sink, mirror, hairdryer were in bedroom area. Walking from the bed to the bathroom was literally down hill. Floor not level but not an insurmountable problem, just interesting. Dinner was very good on their Friday special of prime rib.

We loved the Dell but our room lacked a closet and a table. We did not have adequate room to unpack anything. Other than that the linen was superb, comfortable beds and soft immaculate towels. We would return but just request a larger room.

My room was basic, but clean, modern, and comfortable . A perfectly fine place to sleep. I spent two nights. The first night the hotel was nearly empty and I slept well. However, the second night there were more guests and I discovered that the walls were extremely thin. So much noise leaked into the room from the lobby, hallway, and most unpleasantly the couple having a very good time (ahem) in the room upstairs. Nobody was being exceptionally loud, it just seemed to have zero sound insulation. Getting to sleep after 2 am was not what I needed after a long exhausting day out. One positive is that the continental breakfast is quite nice. The food is fresh and of good quality, with variety. Freshly boiled eggs, meats and cheeses, fresh breads and pastries, some tasty fruit are some examples. I would rate the hotel higher if the noise hadn't been such an issue.

Well kept Inn with a European vibe. Our room was tiny though. Probably the smallest room we even stayed in. river view could have been better if not obstructed by trees. Food at the Dell was very good!

Wow, one of our best hotel stays ever! Before we had even arrived, we received a phone call that we were getting a complimentary upgrade (we hadn't even asked) due to special circumstances. That was just the beginning. Wonderful, welcoming & friendly staff, exceptionally clean room, nicely appointed & furnished room, excellent evening restaurant, fantastic continental breakfast (had something different almost every day). This is a well-managed property with plenty of convenient parking, a very accommodating staff & beautiful setting among the redwood forest & along the meandering Russian River. The Lodge served as our base for wine-tasting days in Napa, Sonoma, Alexander & Russian River Valleys. All the areas were a moderately short drive away. Please note that due to location of Monte Rio & its resort area, driving in & out is challenging because of curvy, squirrely roads... On a purely anecdotal side note, regarding driving in California, no reflection on the Highland Dell Lodge: My observations: 1- No matter how fast you're driving, there is always someone on your butt. Nighttime bonus: they also flash their lights (so you won't forget they are there)... 2- Only bicycles obey the speed limits! 3- CA drivers only yield to emergency vehicles. 4- The day we left: Woodland CA Costco gas $4.47/gal, Tucson AZ Costco $2.93/gal Same vendor, same day. The property overall was very nice. Older but updated. Our experience at the restaurant was disappointing. We were seated per our reservation however the staff seemed overwhelmed by the number of people at the restaurant. Didn't seem to be a crazy ratio of staff to guests but we were fairly ignored in the corner. Not entirely certain of who was our waiter. Did not check on us often and we waited 20 minutes from when our dinner dishes were cleared and a check was brought to our table. We were not asked about dessert until we asked then. Once dessert was brought out and finished, we waited another 10 minutes for a check. Food was great but service was poor.

I had a great stay here! I didn’t receive a reply to email questions before, but a local phoned them for me. I was arriving after the end of check in time. They were great and left keys and instructions for me. Everything was really clean, had everything I needed and they helped with anything else I needed. Lovely helpful staff. Other rooms toilet flushes could be heard but ear plugs sorted that. Great bed, toilet and shower. Super cute room I really happy with. Super safe as I was a woman travelling alone and didn’t worry at all. Lovely breakfast to help yourself to. Really enjoyed my stay!

The owners and staff at this hotel are wonderfully kind, attentive and friendly. They treat guests with a personal approach which is completely rare these days. They make you feel as if you really are guest in their home, which in fact you are, as this is a family run business. So refreshing after most places which are completely impersonal and run only for profit. This place is charming, spotlessly clean, wonderful included breakfast and they have an excellent restaurant as well as a popular bar. The hotel is exceptionally quiet and the setting by the Russian River surrounded by the beautiful trees and greenery makes this feel like a safe haven. It is a really specia place.

The facility is clean and has a lovely view. Rooms were small but efficient. Hooks on the back of bathroom door would be helpful for damp towels. The owner was a bit rude upon check in. He asked if we wanted an upgrade and pointed out that we had the “cheapest room”. Also did not inform us of the WiFi password or the breakfast hours. The help staff was very gracious.

My parents were staying in the hotel for their anniversary and I surprised them and stayed for the night. The staff was wonderful and the grounds were beautiful. We could walk to the beach over the bridge

We loved our stay at this well appointed cozy beautiful hotel! The food was great (I had awesome schnitzel) the room was very pretty, and the service was excellent. I’m fairly picky and was delighted to be impressed!!! We also thoroughly enjoyed the location. It was just a stairway down to the river and we could walk to the redwood forest for hiking. Definitely will stay there again!!

We visit this hotel often. It's clean, comfortable and good breakfast. Close to forest, river and ocean. The only thing I wish there were handles on the bathroom door. Very difficult to open.

It was a relaxing get away. One complaint was the pillows, I like feather pillows but they aren't firm enough for my girlfriend. Maybe 1 feather and another firm for each side. However the food at the restaurant was AMAZING. The schnitzel was OMG good.

Wonderful inn with a unique and updated but historical feel; owners were very personable. Picturesque views, great restaurant. Highly recommend!

Valentines Weekend Getaway. The perfect place—beautiful, quiet, excellent food.

Very peaceful location and friendly staff. Had a great glass of wine at the bar and a delicious German dinner.

We stayed at the Lodge for a wedding and the staff was great, friendly, food was excellent, especially the apple strudel with homemade whip cream. It was quiet, clean, easy parking. The only reason not awarded 5 stars is because the rooms are tad small for 4 people, so not much room to layout suit cases or sit on something other than the bed.
