Royal Glen Hotel

Lovely building and very convenient for sea front and shops, yet quiet. Great breakfast, good choices. Fantastic room and comfortable bed. Staff very helpful and friendly. Sadly pool was closed for servicing (we should have checked beforehand) but it didn't detract from our stay. Would stay at this hotel again if visiting the area.

Against: tired & old fashioned room decor. Very hard bed & pillows. The pool picture was misleading: pool small & shallow & felt miserable with nowhere to relax. Sorry to say this but the truth.

An excellent if rather quirky hotel with lots of character and a very interesting history. A superb upstairs lounge, a swimming pool, parking for most cars. Good updated bathroom in our room. Great location just metres away from the esplanade but in a quiet location. Don't expect everything to go smoothly, it won't! But if you want somewhere unusual and with a good standard and great location do stay here. Staff are very welcoming and friendly.

The hotel and staff where excellent, but we where quite disappointed that the swimming pool was not open and we had not been notified of this prior to booking. Car parking was limited and some parking areas difficult to access.

In a venerable building such as this, there are always sure to be minor defects - creaking floorboards above us was one - but that didn't detract from a really nice stay in the spacious Duke room. The staff were excellent - courteous and always helpful - especially the new manager and his wife - and the only real problem was finding and getting into a suitable parking space for a reasonably large family car (BMW 3 series) - in the end, we parked overnight on the road on one occasion. I'm not a swimmer (and had hoped for a jacuzzi - but there isn't one) - but my wife is, though the pool wasn't really deep enough, she said. There were two false fire-alarms at none too convenient times, triggered, we were told by a hair dryer and an over-sensitive alarm sensor. I ngather this is being sorted.... The food was good (Dinner was a little too expensive, we felt) and breakfast was good, apart from the level of some of the background music, which they didn't seem willing, or able, to turn down. A most enjoyable stay, and full marks to a hotel that lays on coffee and mints in the evenings for its guests - lovely to find that after a long day out. We'll hope to return, and thank you to all at the Royal Glen.

Rooms are very tired. Smell of damp. No wine, and no beer on draft which meant you had to go out. Someone else mentioned that the lift was not very good. Staff were very attentive though and breakfast was good.

Parking was good, rooms were clean, staff were polite, breakfast ok.

The location of the hotel is perfect, really close to the seafront and only a 10 minute walk to the shops and main area of Sidmouth. In hindsight I did wish that I hadn’t booked a standard room though. We were allocated room 22. A very small room overlooking the car park. As we only stayed one night it wasn’t too much of a problem but I certainly wouldn’t want to stay in that room any longer! Little room to move around. Bed was comfy but whole room was very dated. Cobwebs hung from the chandelier! Bathroom was “cosy” but clean. Bed was very firm but we didn’t mind that. On arrival we were surprised how small the 2 tier car park is, luckily we did get a space. On entering reception some electrical work was going on and we had to step over leads and avoid a man up a step ladder with a drill. The drill made it difficult to hear what the lady on reception was saying. She was also clearly annoyed by this and came across quite “ grumpy “. Debs who showed us our room and checked us out the next day was lovely. We enjoyed our breakfast which was smaller than other hotels we have stayed in. But we agreed it was sufficient. One thing of note for the hotel is that the hotel information file in the room seems very very dated. We would stay at this hotel again because of its location but next time I would book at least a superior room, definitely not a standard room.

Our room was a little tired and the bathroom was also tired, a few mould spots in the shower area and dust near the extractor.

This charming traditional hotel was clean, comfortable and in an excellent location, only 3 mins walk to the seafront. Our room was spacious and the hotel staff were friendly and helpful. Sidmouth itself is a delightful English seaside town with plenty to see and do, eg walking options a plenty, repertory theatre, open air concerts in the seafront gardens and a variety of exhibitions.

Great mini break in Sidmouth, returning to the Royal Glen after a previous stay earlier in the year. Very much a traditional seaside hotel with an excellent breakfast and decent sized rooms. Hotel staff were very friendly and helpful and we will definitely return.

Easy to walk to the promenade and all it’s facilities and basic facilities just fine but the killer for us was a rock hard bed!

Wonderfully close to the promenade and the pretty town of Sidmouth. Most people had a cooked breakfast rather the a basic continental. Requests are available such as yoghurt. Lovely gardens with plenty of seating scattered around. Car parking a bit tight. We had the Duke Room which I would highly recommend. Excellent en-suite but a bit of scrub “under the rim on the toilet” required. We look forward to going again.

Excellent room, quiet location easy short flat route to beach

Nice hotel and the room was nice. Wi-Fi did not work in room but did in main hotel. Was nicely positioned a short walk to beachfront. Only downside was not a lot of choice for evening meal. Mainly fish. My husband does not eat fish or meat on the bone. Therefore we ate out after first night. Could have done with more normal choices. Not partridges or game birds.

We travelled to Sidmouth on the Sunday and arrived early. Reception advised that the room would be ready quite soon so we had a coffee and relaxed. The room was excellent with a walk in shower. The food was very good and we had dinner at the hotel on 2 nights. The only problem was it was quite a trek to our room but staff kindly transported our bags. Would recommend the Royal Glen for a seaside break as it close to amenities yet in a quiet location.

Receptionist not very welcoming. Made me aware that she was night duty so should take a key as she wouldn't want disturbing. Wasn't offered any explanation of facilities and their availablity. Had a shower after being taken to room. When opwning dr fron shower into bedroom, heat sensir set of the alarm system (sensor alarms should be away from kitchens or bathrooms as steam can damage the alarm, or set it off by mistake. It wasnt on the ceiling as central as possible in the room.) Staff came banging on the door.. Was woken up in the night. Head board wasnt attached. When you moved it banged. Had to pick it up and move it Woken at 7am by noisy vent directly o/s window. I filmed it and spoke as I did so to demonstrate it was so loud it drowned out speech. I was visited by a maintenance man, Martin? He wanted to check the door locks at 915am. I asked why he could wait till I checked out at 10am. He said, 'Ill only be a minute mate. People usually at breakfast' All in all staff were cold and sometimrs officious. The only staff that were pleasent was the girl who showed me to the room Will be taking this further. DO NOT RECOMMWND

The staff were extremely welcoming and friendly nothing was too much trouble. Our bed was a little hard but we asked if they had a mattress topper and they were more than happy to oblige. It’s brilliantly situated to walk to the beach and the shops and would definitely stay again. Thank you for a lovely stay for our 26th wedding anniversary!

We do love Sidmouth and the location of the Royal GLEN located short walk on the main shopping area and the beach. I have recently had a replacement knee operation and needed crutches to move around. No help was given by the staff. We stay just two nights and had our evening meal in the hotel, both nights. We did make one or two requests for evening meal to have any added sauces to come in a separate jug, but this was not done. We had the duck and although there was plenty of meat, the sauce was extremely sweet and it was difficult to get a piece of meat without this added sweetness. We also found that the elderly server gentleman, somewhat abrupt, and misinformed about kitchen procedures. On one particular morning, I asked for smoked salmon and scrambled egg, and when it came, because they had put the plate underneath the heated warming station, the smoke salmon was cooked. I asked the server if this was a normal practice as part of this particular dish, and he said yes, of course, we always serve it like that! On another occasion at dinner, the same thing occurred, where my meal was put under the warming station. Not only were the French beans shrivelled and crispy, but the mash potato had an obvious skin on the top where it had effectively been cooked again. On the second morning, breakfast was a different affair. Entirely we had a European server who couldn't do enough for us, and we thank you for this and left a tip accordingly.

Wonderful stay for our family of 4. Enough room for our toddler to have a bed and our baby to sleep in an infant crib. very walkable to seafront shops.

It was good to have parking with the hotel, as some in the area don't have it. By being a walkable distance from the seafront and town, it put us in a more quiet area.

A great little hotel two minutes from the beach and very close to the shops. Also very convenient for the coastal path I was staying in a single room which had all mod cons including a Bath! The staff in reception and at breakfast were very helpful. I will be back

The food is excellent. I had a great breakfast everyday. I ate dinner there the first night which was very good. The staff are very nice. The Drawing Room and grounds are stunning. It was wonderfully close to the beach.

We have just completed our second trip here, so relaxing! Very friendly staff and an amazing location. Lovely breakfasts and a wonderful old building.
