The Grand Scarborough

Iconic Victorian splendor, in arguably the best location in Scarborough. Great value, clean rooms and comfortable beds. Near to all amenites. Parking at NCP just a short walk away at preferential 50% rate for hotel guests with discount code.

Outside terrace has great views. Can bring hot/cold drinks onto terrace. Very close to funicular railway. Ask if have lift phobia, as I was on top floor.

Beautiful historical hotel, room was good size and had everything what was needed. Hotel had entertainment each evening for free. It is great value for money spent.

Clean and tidy. However lift wait at peak times.

Parking was a large issue outside the hotel. Many guest had parking tickets over the weekend, Police were at the hotel on 2 of the 3 nights i stayed there dealing with issues at the door way. Great views from then terrace though and room of the sea, restaurant prices were very reasonable. Very close to the beach and town.

I booked this hotel as it came up when I searched for hotels with pools in Scarborough. However this hotel does not have a pool much to our dismay… when we asked we were told we could walk up the road to their sister hotel and pay a surcharge to use their pool!! This was so disappointing as when I book a hotel with a pool it because I would like it to be in the same building, to use at my leisure and with no extra charges! So I had 2 very disappointed children. The location was excellent however, right on the beach front with a path straight down from the hotel. The staff were all friendly and welcoming. The room was warm and comfortable and we were lucky enough to have an amazing sea view room! The breakfast was average and slightly disappointing for such a grand hotel. The cold selection very limited and the cooked breakfast was very bland and tasteless. Finally I booked a family room which was advertised on Hotels.com as having 4 beds but when we arrived there were only 3 plus a very small sofa which luckily my 7 year managed to squeeze on for the night! Overall a pleasant but disappointing stay.

We stayed for 2 nights - managed to have a pleasant stay despite the hotel's many shortcomings. Room was okay; the 6th floor used to be the staff's quarters - take from that what you will! Brilliant view though. Check in was incredibly tedious, took longer than necessary and felt pressured into buying breakfast in advance. Said breakfast was sub par to put it politely. The ladies toilets downstairs were both without locks or handles, and the gents were out of order - a perfect recipe for disaster. The staff had an air of indifference about them. There are no luggage storage facilities post check out and it boggles the mind to fathom that such a "grand" building would not have this option. Speaking of grand, the communal areas are impressive, but one could just pop in off the street and admire them and then stay in any number of better hotels within walking distance. Don't be fooled by its self-proclaimed grandness!

The perfect location for stunning views of the harbour and the beach. A beautiful, imposing property with breathtaking architecture. Sadly the exterior on the side of the beach is in dire need of attention. Peeling paint and filthy windows spoil the aesthetics of the property. Our sea view was marred by the caked on dirt on the window. The dining room is clean and inviting, the food was good and plentiful. Sadly no luggage store to leave our baggage was disappointing. Overall a lovely experience but could definitely be better

Having an initial issue with our allocated room on arrival we were quickly moved to another without any fuss. All the staff were lovely and although there are some areas inside and outside the hotel in need of renovating/updating it did not bother us on a whole. But...Our major problem were the lifts, they were either out of order or took as long as almost 30mins for my partner to get in. We were on 5th floor and due to him having a history of heart attacks and COPD using the stairs was a definite no for him. One area that would benefit massively from updating

Great location and a nice view of the beech but no more positivies, really. My single room's cleaning was lacklustre, with missing pillow case cover, and a long female hair inside the sheets... The shower head was broken, with water streaming in all directions. I had a two stay booking, and as they do no room service over multi-day stays, all I had was a single tea bag waiting for me with the kettle. Single star hotels do better service than this.

The hotel is clean

Not clean atall. Bathroom door was falling apart. Dirty bed sheets.

The bathroom shower was dirty, the shower hose was dirty and changin colour, the curtain and walls were stained, The window sill and skirting board was dirty, not enough pillows in the room. You couldn't get a drink at the bar at 11pm. That said it was quiet in the rooms,

Stunning building and great location. However the interior needs lots of TLC. We had a fan in the room which did not work, the other was thick with dust. We could not open windows. Towel rail had clearly been broken off wall and not replaced. And paint literally peeling off walls…To name but a few. My heavily pregnant wife asked for another pillow which never turned up. There was no mirror in the room other than the bathroom, not ideal for a family of four sharing. When we moved chairs to sit down we found empty wrappers and other muck/dirt. Guests in the room above were noisy all hours with music starting at 3am. For the price we didn’t expect five star luxury but working amenities and cleanliness are a must!

Absolutely filthy disgusting the sink was permanently blocked with the plug and stunk! Clumps of hair all over the floor hair in the bedding all stained with holes all in we were upgraded to a room with sea view would hate to have seen the basic room that was booked! Local children all running round the hotel swearing and eventually kicked out by the manager. Would never ever return the hotel is very old and dated this isn’t the issue, just clearly the maids clean with their eyes closed.

Perfect for a one night in Scarborough with the dog

A bed for the night is all we needed. It was a nice surprise to be put in a room with a sea view. Staff were welcoming and helpful. The room did smell musty, had loads of cobwebs on the ceiling, but had everything needed for an overnight stay.

Hotel was disgusting everywhere was dirty. Carpets. Bed. Bathroom. Wall paper. Mould. Hairs on wall. Cob webs everywhere. Windows so dirty we walked in. And walked out after 15 mins. Checked out within hour that’s only because it took sooo long because nothing worked on desk.

Dining area, coffee lounge and Main Entrance area were very pretty on first arrival. The corridors were dirty, very dusty/dirty skirting boards, dirty door frames, dirty toilets. The metal checker plate infront of the lift was held on by 2 screws and a very dangerous trip hazard. The public toilets were dirty and smelly. Our room had some form of bodily fluid/ solid dried onto the radiator. The window sill was filthy and dusty, as were the skirting boards. No shower mat to stand on when getting out of the shower which is a slip hazard. One side of the sink panel was broken. There were stains on the wall, which were obviously drink stains.Dirty linen piled on the floor in a doorway which is a fire risk as well as an obstruction. I was recovering from surgery on my foot, when I asked for a spare pillow to elevate it I was told they didn’t have any spare. I couldn’t shower due to being frightened of slipping. Unfortunately, other than the breakfast and the main staircase in reception, the hotel definitely didn’t live up to its name in any shape or form. Very very disappointed and disgusted and will never go back.

Seagulls. Seagulls and more seagulls. All night noise

Checkin was easy. Lobby was functional. I was "upgraded" from a room with no windows to a 4th floor room with a window. Unfortunately the so called upgrade backfired on me as the noise from the resident seagulls and chicks woke me up at 5am with a full dawn chorus! I would opt for an internal room if u want to sleep!

Rooms to hot .

Rusty shower Toilet wouldnt flush so had to use shower as a toilet. Reported and was refused a room change. Bathroom door wouldnt shut when using toilet/shower. Wrong type of room to our booking. Broken/squeaky floor boards could hear when people walking around. Room not cleaned properly as waste paper(looked like blood) left on the floor. Old fashioned key the size of a ruler...had to take it out all day/night with us

This was the cheapest hotel in town, so we had a fair idea of what to expect. Most of it matched our expectations - aging fixtures, a less-than-spotless feel - but the mattress in our room was truly awful, and there was only one very thin pillow (we asked for another, but they couldn’t provide). The building itself is lovely, though very tired in places. On the plus side, the views over the bay are absolutely gorgeous, and the breakfast staff were especially warm and cheerful. Overall, if you think of it more like a hostel, you’ll manage for a single night - but not much longer.

The millions spent on refurbishing definitely was not on the rooms, mine had several issues. No towel rail in the bathroom, missing handles on drawers, the Yale lock was loose and didn’t lock on inside, the TV had been moved and was positioned above the middle of the dresser and couldn’t fold back against the wall, so you hit your head on in when standing up, the room overall was all a bit sad.

Better than I was expecting. Don't get me wrong the rooms are tired and needs redecorating but I slept so well! It's very basic so don't go in expecting anything fancy but for the price it's great. plus the location is fantastic.

The room on the 6th (top) floor was comfortable enough for one night, decent bed and bath. However, bath plug got stuck and took a while to get it out following a bath. Also, the windows are not very well insulated so there is a lot, lots, lots of wind noise as well as seagulls which could also be heard. I guess that's because of the age of the hotel. I think it probably does need a bit of modernizing but that's rather costly?

Room was very dark, window didn’t open. Squeaky floor board. Bathroom was small.

Check in was horrendous, nearly 1 and a half hours to check in, people jumping the queue, people vaping in the queue, only one person on checking people in which was just silly. No tea making gear in the room.

Reported problems that weren't attended to. Far too long to check in.

Staff were very accommodating for us with our 2 dogs.

Stayed 4 nights, upon checking in the staff member was rude and sarcastic, and many people who checked in came straight back to reception and checked out and got a refund as there were bed bugs on the mattress, poo all over the toilets in the room and just dirt everywhere. Then on the last day I rang reception for clean towels and toilet paper as no one had been in to refresh the room in the whole stay, was too “can you not just come down and get them yourself?” Very rude. I said to him that’s ridiculous, his response was “oh ok” and put the phone down on me. Hotel is in dire condition, some staff are just a disgrace. Will not be staying again not even for free. I would rather have paid £100 extra and stayed in another hotel. Total disgrace Britannia

They helped us out at the last minute when our original accommodation (different provider) cancelled us the evening before our trip. I had 12 hours notice to book and Expedia/Grand Hotel came to the rescue. The staff were helpful and friendly. And a real comfortable stay. My Daughter also had a room with her friend and they loved it too. Thank you 🙂

Takes far too long to check in

We had a very good last minute weekend break, our room was clean and had everything we needed, Saturday morning we had breakfast that was OK but I didn’t like the atmosphere people having know manners at all, staff was friendly and couldn’t do enough for you so we was very happy with our weekend thank you

Check in was really smooth, The lad on reception (Joe) we think is amazing, friendly and chatty and a credit to the hotel Our room was cramped so wouldn't stay longer than 1 night but the bed was clean, bathroom smelt strongly of tobacco which was awful

There were long queues to check in - even though we had checked in online as advised, we still had to join a 50 deep queue to get our room key which took about 45 mins. There were no staff around to organise or direct people apart from the 3 ladies on reception who were frantically trying to check everyone in. Room was ok, we paid for a standard so expected what we got, there were stains on the wall but otherwise the room was clean and the bed was comfortable. Sadly this hotel is charging premium rates for mediocre rooms and service and is in real need of updating. If you are looking for a bed for the night that's clean & comfortable then this place is ok but you could save some £££ by looking elsewhere!

The Grand Hotel in Scarborough is an epic Victorian pile and a lovely looking building. The entrance, lobby and ground floor space immediately make an impression, all swanky sofas and marble columns. The check in desk holds it's historic charm, with the room keys all in little cubby holes, but it did tickle me that it's now cluttered up by monitors that the staff have to peer awkwardly around. Staff were very friendly and helpful. The lift up to the room was a tiny thing and made a worrying crunch past the first floor (this was definitely attended to the next day when the fire brigade arrived). The room itself was nicely furnished with some attempt at matching the Victorian grandeur of the building. The bathroom was fairly basic and plain but did the job. I did rather boringly wonder if the original Victorian bathrooms were nicer than the modern shower and whatnot. Due to the hot weather recently, the room was very warm, so the fan tucked away in the wardrobe came in handy. Bed was comfy but the heat and noisy seagulls kept me awake most of the night, but that's not the fault of the venue. I didn't have breakfast, so can't comment on that, but for a good budget stay in an impressive hotel, I was happy.

Great large entrance. Good position in the seaside town

Hotel is situated just minutes from the beach which is ideal for children. Whilst some of the rooms are in need of a spruce up, the hotel is clean and tidy. The staff are friendly and helpful. There is always something going on entertainment wise in the hotel from bingo to movies. All in all, we enjoyed our stay

Great location. Friendly staff. Was given a free upgrade from single to double room. Comfortable bed for the night. Room was clean if a little rough around the edges.Totally adequate for the budget price paid.

The staff - managers and the breakfast team make this hotel special. The ambiance and the glorious interior of the public rooms are excellent. The room - shabby and dated but clean and comfortable. Average food selection at breakfast. However the staff were amazing. - the lovely lady at the breakfast serving was smiley and thoughtful. I asked for some alternative milk and she provided it without question.

The building style is beautiful (or was) but the housekeeping and food miserable. The grand's idea of a carvery was a container of chicken legs and a container of gammon.£17 per head !!! pudding was chocolate roll slice at first glance, I thought it was black pudding, dry and hard. Custard was made with water and lumpy. Apart from the fact we were both hungry We would not have eaten it. very disapointing.

The breakfast was terrible. Watered down juice. Hard eggs,hard sausages. Luke warm everything else . Manager at breakfast was not friendly, acted like we were a nuisance. Dirty window sills with dead flies in restaurant

Exceptional welcome and great service from staff, room was very clean great views, couple of corridors were a bit smelly and windows weren’t the cleanest, but to be expected really with all the seagulls around. Was very pleased with our stay after all bad reviews, would definitely give rooms and reception services a 9/10 , breakfast wasn’t so great, so would book without breakfast next time. Would definitely go again

Close to the sea front and town food was good buffet style for breakfast. Bed and pillows to firm otherwise a decent enough place to wash and change before exploring.

For the money we paid you could not grumble. It is very dated in the rooms and once you move away from the beautiful entrance area which is a shame. even the welcome letter felt formal and very authoritarian. We did have the breakfast and the room has gorgeous views over the sea but again menu very dated, ok if you simply wanted a fry up. Yes we would stay again if we were simply up for the night as a couple and would only be sleeping in the room. We wouldn’t eat there again though

Unrestricted views of the beach. Breakfast poor little choice.

Single room was clean and tidy if not a bit aged . Breakfast was rubbish for 12 quid nothing had any flavour just cheapest produce . Walk on the beach at 6.45 was great 👍
