Holiday Inn Express & Suites Alpena - Downtown by IHG

The „Welcome“ was not a welcome at all. Very rude stuff. Indoor Pool was „out of order“. Only after we asked for the pool they put a sign out. TV program was very limited. All these topics with a 4 year old girl is hard to accept. Probably never again even we know that the people Up North are a bit more „rough“ but this was a No No.

The pool was cold, so my children preferred to swim in the lake. Breakfast was tasty but the variety was average. The front desk workers were not knowledgeable and didn’t seem motivated to help. The staff running the breakfast were kind and exceptionally helpful.

Everything was great, clean room, polite staff and the breakfast had a good selection of food for me, my wife and my kids. I also appreciate the fresh ground coffee machine available at all times.

Clean and modern. Lots of dining options in the area. Would have liked much better bathroom lighting and private seating areas on the back grounds where the grass is but other than that it was great.

No bottled water (even in the lobby market). No BASIC TV networks. Over-priced. I booked Holiday Inn Express because I thought the quality standards could be relied on. Big disappointment.

Near downtown restaurants and river. No hot tub which i was expecting (my fault). Decent breakfast. Sofa for 3rd bed is very poor although at least sheets/pillows for it.

The staff, service and cleanliness of the facilities were consistently good. My only issue were the channels available through the TV. I could not locate local channels, the golf channel was listed, but unavailable on the TV and I could not utilize my own Streaming Stick on the TV as an alternative. Less of a problem if staying just a night or two but I was here for a working week, so I noticed it more.

I love how clean the place was - our room was spotless and smelled clean.

I really like this hotel and I’ve stayed here every time I come back to my hometown. But I can tell that the attention to cleanliness and upkeep is severely beginning to lack. Please don’t turn into the old Holiday Inn/Ramada. Breakfast is fantastic and staff is kind enough…but I can tell that they don’t care much about the guests.

We arrived later then we planned but that was no problem for us checking in. The employees were super nice. The 1st room we were in smelled like a sewer was backing up but they quicly and easily changed us to another room. Breakfast service bar was great. Alot of choices and the employee was very friendly, greating people when they came in. If i had to say a negative thing about the stay it would be the size of the poole towels. Very small.

This property was very clean, up to date, and the staff was great!!

Only issue was bath drain was plugged when I started using shower. Had to unscrew and pull huge amount of hair from drain myself to unclog and get water to drain. Other than that very enjoyable stay

People above me were noisy

Beds were not comfortable, too soft. And the pillows were terrible, one super firm and one felt like 1/2 the feathers were gone. Area around was fine but staff was not welcoming at check-in.

The plumbing was pretty wacky. Anytime I flushed the toilet, there'd be a loud knocking sound followed by loud squealing. I also heard it from other rooms. The shower pressure was so bad, it literally felt like someone was peeing on me. I have stayed in a fair few Holiday Inn Express hotels, but the bed on this one was incredibly hard. I woke in with back pain. I would not recommend this hotel. It absolutely is not worth the $200/night fee. I would like a refund.

When I walked in, the front desk staff was very welcoming! The hotel was super clean, and so was our room. And the bed was super comfortable! The complimentary breakfast was so good, and the variety was incredible. My overall stay was amazing. I’ll definitely be staying here again and recommending this hotel to my friends and family! Very nice. But don’t stay here. So noisy! Not able to sleep. For some reason the 2 old people(us) were given room by outside entrance. People talking and slamming outside door and their room doors! Drove 6 hours to get here for a funeral. Will not have much sleep before we attend funeral and drive 6 hours back home. Also horrible pillows.

We had a lovely weekend. However, the family above us had small children. The children ran wild, even after we complained. It was like a herd of elephants romping above us until after 10 pm at night. The walls are very thin in the hotel. Otherwise, the stay was fine. Thank you.

Clean, comfortable stay

Check in time was supposed to be 3. We came at 3:30 to get our room and it wasn't available yet because it still needed cleaning. So we went to do something else. Got a call at 5:30 that they had a room but we no longer had a suite just a regular room. We got nothing for getting stuck in a smaller room or not being able to check in after time.

It would have been a perfect score but a guest threatened my husband and children and the staff did nothing about it.

I always have a huge problem getting a receipt from my stays at the Holiday Inn Expresses. Hotels.com tells me I can receive one from the Hotel when I check out and when I try to do that, Holiday Inn tells me I can only get a receipt from Hotels.com because that is who I booked through. It is always a hassle and I am going to start searching other hotels and booking sites from here on out. These are business trips and I need the receipts to be reimbursed and I don't have time to deal with the hassle.

Family friendly and convenient location. The Holiday Inn Alpena is close to restaurants and the local parks and is in the heart of Downtown Alpena. The room amenities are basic and meet the daily needs. Shampoo and soaps were all Dove products. One area I would like to see improvement is the beds. They are medium firm yet left me with a back ache. The top blankets are duvet and it’s shifts in your sleep. The hot breakfast was nice and met all our needs for our family of 6. The food staff worked hard to ensure items stayed stocked. The employees we interacted with were very friendly and helpful.

Daytime manager demeanor is off-putting. I reserved a 2 night weekend stay. Upon check-in, I asked to cancel the second night. The evening clerk said that I would need to contact Hotels.com to do this as that is how I reserved my stay. I did so and they contacted the hotel and issued me a refund. The next am, when I turned in my keys, I was confronted by the manager saying I was still registered for the second night. I explained that I had cancelled via Hotels.com as instructed the evening before. I also showed her the emails from Hotels.com showing that the cancellation was done and a refund issued. She kept saying, “but in our system you are still here for another night. I explained that I’d done what I was asked to do by the evening check in host and couldn’t explain why it was still in their system, particularly with th the confirmation and returned partial payment. She then said, “ well, good luck with that “ as though she doubted my effort to cancel would be successful. Normally, I wouldn’t care about a conversation like this but with several family members living in the area and many relatives who have come into town for funerals recently, this manager’s unprofessional behavior and dismissive approach are reaching legendary status. It’s a shame because the hotel is very new, nice and serves a good breakfast

In town for a family gathering, wife’s home town. Hotel was very nice. William at the front desk was very good at his job and very nice!

It is very walkable and a great place.

Room was very clean and staff very helpful and friendly. The breakfast was not as good as I've had in other IHG sites. The location is exceptional. You can get to anywhere in Alpena in a few minutes and you can wall to shops, cinema, and restaurants in a few minutes as well.

Right in downtown. You could walk to everything!

Perfectly located near downtown

The Holiday Inn is right on the River. Very senic, especially the Morning skyline. Plus is a five minute walk uptown to restaurants and unique shops & boutiques.

The hotel is nice and clean in a nice location. Our room was not ready at 4:00 even though check-in is at 3:00 but they accommodated us with a different room right away. When we went down for breakfast at 9:30 (breakfast hours were until 10:00) they were out of oatmeal and eggs and forks.

Room was very clean and staff very helpful and friendly. The breakfast was not as good as I've had in other IHG sites. The location is exceptional. You can get to anywhere in Alpena in a few minutes and you can wall to shops, cinema, and restaurants in a few minutes as well.

Perfect location for dining, brews, parks, views, accessibility to in/out of Alpena… almost new, fresh, clean … good free breakfasts… we loved our stay. Visited nearby museums, Rockport SRA, the “sinks” (though the Stevens Twin Sinks and Bruski Sinks about 20 minutes further were better looks at “sinks). Swam in Huron up at Presque Isle … all sorts of activities. Loved Alpena!
