Scored as ok. Good location. Good parking. Food in the restaurant was very good and home cooked. Room was ok. Mattress was “tired”. The bathroom could do with a bit of TLC. Shower cubicle needs a good clean especially around the seals on the door. A few of the floor tiles in the bathroom were broken and grout missing. No towel / mat to put down when getting out the shower. No shower gel which is unusual. I’d be more than happy to pay a higher rate for improvements as above.

The staff were very helpful and friendly. There isn’t a reception so the bar staff check guests in. The information pack in the room states that breakfast is only served on Saturday and Sundays between 9 and 11am. However there were no staff present at 9.10am and no one preparing breakfast in the restaurant area, so we gave up and checked out. The room was reasonably clean. A good deep clean would be recommended. Areas in the bathroom need attention ie mould. A bathmat would add safety to the slippery wet tiles.

No reception desk so had to wander about until we got key from behind the bar which doubles up as reception. On leaving you put your key in a box outside the bedrooms and you don't aee anyone. Check out is 10am which is very unusual. Food was good. Quiz night (Thursday) noisy until 11pm.

Overall, our stay here was average. There were good things and then things that need a little attention. Our room was clean and spacious enough for 2 people. The shower was pretty decent and large in size. The mattress was so uncomfortable though - it really needs to be changed. You could feel the springs through it and it made sleeping really difficult. The shower tiles need a bit of a scrub as there is a bit of grime on them. The food at the restaurant was quite nice, and the service was quick and friendly. The location is probably 20-25mins from Edinburgh itself, so it’s best to have a car. But public buses do stop just outside the hotel.

I have put Okay for most as there were a few things that need attention. The room wasnt properly prepared: there was no coffee sachets, the bathroom door handle was broken, the shower tray seal needed either replacing or a good clean, the shower door wouldnt stay in position when open. There was no shower rug to step out on and the tiles could be slippery if wet. There was also a cracked tile which could cause an injury. The pillows had a stale sweaty smell and the left side of the headboard had a head sweat stain which was unpleasant. Not having breakfast included in the price was a bit wrong too. Nobody really checked us in properly. It was the cleaner who was really helpful in showing us how to use the fob to get in if we were late back. She was really friendly and pleasant as was the waitress in the breakfast room. It was a busy hotel in the restaurant, bar and function suite, perhaps the accommodation side of the establishment isnt the priority but it was quite expensive for what we got.
