The Dorothy Motel

Excellent stay. Check in desk just across the road in canoe suites. Right next to gas station and convenience store. Only ~2km from main downtown area. They give complimentary roam bus passes. The rooms are new and have all amenities. The small courtyard is also cute.

Great property with the bonus of using the amenities available at the Canoe hotel across the street.

I gave the breakfast a mid review because we didn’t actually have that included. However, at the affiliated hotel across the street we were able to request coffee tea and hot chocolate fresh from the desk and bring it back to our motel room any time we wanted. Rooms were cute and clean. Housekeeping came and packed every day if we needed a clean. Hot tub and sauna were wonderful. Located at one end of Banff so it’s not close to any real noise. Hotel supplied bus tickets into central area of Banff if we didn’t want to walk or drive. For a motel, it felt like a hotel. It was great.

Great little hotel off the beaten path but with easy access to restaurants and town bus. Bonus to use Canoe Lodge facilities for pool and laundry.

Our stay was incredible the rooms were spacious and clean and coffee was so good, the best features are the pools in caneo hotel that you can access and a lot of parking.You get a roam transit pass for going around in the town with your stay which is a great addition to overall experience

What a fantastic little spot! I’m so glad we discovered this place. Beautifully updated rooms and so clean and comfortable. Being able to access the Otter’s stunning pool facilities was the cherry on top. We will definitely be back!

I had enjoyed my previous stay here a few years ago so I returned for a second stay. I stayed 3 nights between August 29 and September 1, 2025. Despite its location not being overly convenient (~25 mins' walk to the town centre), I chose this place because of how clean it was the last time I stayed here. This time though, I had a room that was absolutely DISGUSTING. I initially noticed a single hair on the TV stand and didn't think much of it. However, when I lifted the cover to get into bed and go to sleep, I found that the bed sheets were covered in human hair, some long and others short and curly. There were two queen beds in the room, and I was too tired to do anything about it, so I tried to use the other bed but found out the other bed was in the same shape. I had to call the reception at 11:20 PM and get the sheets changed. When the housekeeping people came to change the sheets, they just shook off the sheets, so the hair went flying everywhere. As they didn't pick up the hair before changing the sheets, some of the hair settled back onto the new bedding. I spoke at the hotel reception the next morning. The lady at the reception apologized and offered $50 meal voucher for the inconvenience. I didn't want to berate a reception staff member, who was doing their best to handle the situation, so I took the voucher, thanked her and walked away, but I felt disgusted the whole remaining stay. Crazy I had to pay over $500 per night for this horrible experience.

Well priced extra clean property, 100m from gas and convenience store. Everything works and is newish. You have to register at canoe hotel so one star off for service but on balance it is excellent with very reasonable price.

Bathroom had a fair amount of neglect in the overall cleanliness. Built up dust, stains, obvious nastiness in the grout, corners, baseboards. Comfy enough and nice enough design but the cleanliness was dissappinting considering it was a $200 a night room.

The room was spotless and smelled so clean when we walked in. Not only that it’s the value you are getting here. They made up coffee/hot chocolate bags for our room, we had access to the hot pools and amenities at the main hotel. You could hear foot traffic from the room above but I have no complaints. The room was at least half the price of other hotels in the area, it’s an older building, it’s not gonna be perfect but it’s close enough. We would definitely stay here again if we find ourselves back in Banff one day. 9.5/10

The room stunk from the moment we opened the door. It smelled like dirty man hair. The pillows on the one bed were the problem, and the smell got onto the sheets. I called to replace all the bedding, which they promptly did.

The room was very nice! This was the best motel I've ever stayed in and it felt nicer than some hotel rooms. I enjoyed the big and clean shower, spacious room that felt super cozy with comfortable beds and it was great to have access to a private balcony.

Wi Fi did not work. Front desk would not help. This is the hotel for folks who don't need WiFi

The large room was very clean and quiet. The staff across the street were very cordial and courteous. They also gave us the best coffee and real cream...that's right, not creamers!! The washroom and shower were large and had great soap and shampoo. The only negative was the loudness of the heating system.

Easy to check in although need to download an app. Wifi is great. There is not check out function in the app, need to call for that.

Very comfortable beds and pillows. Large room, spacious bathroom, good location and very quiet. Free parking. I think the motel has been recently renovated. The only problem was the noise from the air conditioning unit. It was so loud you could not hear the tv without turning it up very loud.

The Dorothy is an absolute gem in Banff. I will absolutely stay again. * If management or ownership reads this, please consider putting soft-touch sliders on the chairs in the rooms. The noise of sliding chairs on the bare floor from the 2nd floor to the 1st floor is awful and amplified. Maybe even a table top sign in each room that suggests sliding chairs quietly to ensure comfort of guest below? (If the chairs weren’t an issue, I would have given 5-stars)

Our room was spacious and the bathroom, specifically the shower, was enormous. The bed was also extremely comfortable.

The room was fine, the only issue was when you book the Dorothy you have to check in at a different hotel nearby. I booked on line while we were on the highway and only glanced at the confirmation email which clearly explained the process. One of the reasons I choose this property is that 75 reviewers raved about the staff. Well, I hate to break it to them but there aren’t any. The front desk at the Canoe Hotel where I had to go to check in were excellent.

The property was nice and accommodations good, it was just the check in and out that was problematic. I used Expedia so it was paid for and when my son checked in, they mistakenly charged him for the room when they charged for the deposit; the deposit was expected. They credited him so that was fine, but when he went to get deposit back upon check out (which they said he had to use since using a debit card for that) they were unable to credit on the debit card so they had to wait around until the person was able to get cash. Quite the hassle.

The hotel room was nice given the quick stop-through. The room was clean, bed was comfortable. However, all I remember about this hotel is how much trouble the check-in process was with the digital key access. I spent two hours trying to get it to work and finally had to go to the adjacent hotel to get a key. Low tech check-in would have saved me hours and frustration.

Great property and nicely appointed rooms. Initial check-in is at the Canoe Hotel which is across the street. They have daily coffee and tea supply delivery and a pour over coffee maker in the room. The beauty of it is that you have full access to the Canoe Hotel's emenities. Hotel is a short walk down Banff Ave into town. Definitely would stay here again when visiting the area.

Our stay was perfect! The room was clean and quiet. We had access to the amenities at their other hotel property across the street as well as their friendly and knowledgeable concierges who helped us book our tour bus to Lake Louise. Would recommended!

Stayed there for a night. Room was clean and quiet. All amenities were there. Hotel has ample parking space. Check-in check-out was smooth as well. As core downtown is around 1.5 km they provided us free transit passes without asking. Overall a nice stay.

I was worried that it was an unmanned motel, but it was perfect. We had a small issue with the air conditioner and maintenance. Was there within five minutes.. the coffee tea bag was very nice. We were able to walk to the Roam bus. We were definitely book with them again.

The Dorothy and Hotel Canoe are a no brainer when staying in Banff! Check-in was a breeze and Sarah was an angel making sure she covered all our needs and gave us tips and recommendations. Coffee service was a highlight, room was immaculate and everyone we interacted with at the Canoe was top notch. Rooms are exactly like they are pictured, parking is easy, courtyard was beautiful and never loud. We had zero complaints- although we could see how previous reviews of some corner rooms were less than ideal. We personally loved being a close walk to downtown Banff or the ability to use the bus pass(free). The team behind Hotel Canoe, The Dorothy and Sudden Sally really have everything covered and I wouldn’t hesitate to stay again!

Mobile check in did not work so we had to first stop at the Canoe Hotel to check in which wasn’t super convenient. Other than that, very happy with the staff and the room. It is at the far end of the road in Banff so good amount of walking- unless you catch the bus which we didn’t do because of the timing.

Loved the location! It’s away from the crazy busy town and easy access to highway to get to and from al the attractions!

I enjoyed my stay at Dorothy Motel. I felt safe and the staff are very accommodating. Parking was good too. Although, it was challenging for me to bring my luggage up since it only had stairs, still it was doable. It was next to the gas station and convenience store so that’s a plus point for me. Place was decent and clean. I will surely stay here again in the future.

We stayed here at the end of August for 3 nights. It was a nice quiet location at the top of the strip, further away from all the action which we liked because it’s all walkable. Also they gave us free bus passes. The bus stop is only a few steps away so it was easy to hop on hop off to go for dinner or a hike up Tunnel Mountain. The room’s interior design was very fresh & modern with interesting artwork taking inspiration from women of the backcountry & nature. We loved being on the ground floor with access to the beautiful courtyard where we sat at a small bistro set outside our door & enjoyed the complimentary pour over coffee we received / prepared ourselves daily. The room had cozy beds & we loved that they supplied Rocky Mountain Soap products in the bathroom. There was plenty of parking & special access to the beautiful hot pools at the Canoe Hotel across the road which had a change room w/ lockers & towels - so it was easy to just walk over and have a dip with magnificent mountain views! We really enjoyed our stay at The Dorothy!

This was a great base to get to the sights in the Banff area. The staff at Hotel Canoe was great, Dorothy was quiet and wasn't busy, but was close enough to downtown to be walk-able.

Simple but well designed. Conveniently located a block from the main downtown road & having a free bus pass with our stay was icing on the cake. Loved that we could use The Canoe Hotel's hot pools & ease of the lovely restaurant on site.

Attractive modern room. Lots of space with refrigerator and microwave. Ice machine was nearby. Free bus passes from reception were a nice touch as was the gourmet tea and coffee!

My husband and I stayed here for 3 nights and for days...the check in was 4pm we came too early (just excited to see the beauty of banff😊)...front desk agent just put tag on our luggage and just came back around 4pm...front desk poeple were very nice...there is a free roam bus ticket we just used it going to Banff gondola & Minnewanka lake...this place is walkable to banff town..have co-op open 24hrs if you feel snacky at night...how i wish Sudden sally coffee shop opens a little bit earlier...

We loved the Dorothy Motel - especially because it was away from the bustle of downtown and we could use the amenities of the Canoe and the Otter. We also had free fresh ground French Press coffee and bus passes. We stayed one night in a more expensive, less appealing hotel. I highly recommend the Dorothy!

Loved the quaint old time vibe of the motel in the woods and off the main street, but with all the amenities offered by The Canoe just across the street. The roof top hot pools and the view were absolutely incredible, Sudden Sally was delicious (and the happy hour deal phenomenal) and loved the size of the rooms and the bath soaps & shampoos!

This is a great, affordable place to stay in Banff. It is newly renovated, has comfortable beds and the rooms are outfitted with a mini fridge, microwave and kettle and Rocky Mountain Soap Company toiletries (which I love!). The decor is bright and fun. The coffee situation could be better as you have to pick it up or request it from the Canoe Hotel and make it with hot water and a filter. I would much prefer individual pods or an actual coffee maker. The highlight is the access to the hot pools at the Canoe Hotel and Suites.
