This hotel ended up being right in the middle of all the Kyoto action. It was close to just about any shopping experience you might want, and a 5-10 minute walk to train lines. The front steps actually dish you out into the covered Teramachi shopping streets, which run perpendicular to Nishiki Market. This came in handy on our one rainy day in Japan. The hotel itself was extremely quiet, which is remarkable given its busy location. That said, if you tend to shy away from hotels in busy heavily-touristed areas, this might not be the best location for you. Customer service was fantastic. They helped us with both luggage receiving and forwarding. The lobby had complimentary coffee, tea, hot chocolate, and sake. That last one was fun because they invited us to take a walking tour of their four area hotels to sample their different sake offerings. That was a nice activity for the whole family because they gave us a postcard to collect stamps at each of the hotels. Our son liked that! The lobby also had a cool area to try your hand at origami. Our room was clean, quiet, and comfortable with two twin beds pushed together into a huge king, and a comfortable futon-topped cot for our teenage son. The room also had a combo washer/dryer (detergent included), fridge, one-burner stove, kitchen sink, and microwave. The only disappointment we had was a shortage of dishes and utensils. We were able to borrow some items at the desk, but some (like a skillet) had to be rented.
