Union Hotel

I do not recommend the Union Hotel in Benicia California, but I do recommend Benicia, which is a gem. The Union Hotel was built in 1852 and is now a neglected relic. There are warnings about using the elevator. The desk staff seem to have no pride in their work. The “free continental breakfast“ is a joke. The bed was very comfortable, and the linens were very clean, but the furnishings were tattered. Next time I will pay more to get more at a different hotel. However, if you want something clean and budget friendly in a great location, the Union Hotel is tolerable.

We had a fun time at Union Hotel- our room was huge and had an outstanding view. It was a bit dated. The jacuzzi tubs did not work, and there was a really loud vibration in one wall that we thought might come from the restaurant below, but it stopped at 10pm! Staff was so nice and location was great.

The NEGATIVE: I wasn't a fan of the bed as it "creaked" whenever I moved on it which was no fun, also, the mattress was very high (maybe I am too short) so it took a lot of effort to jump up onto the bed. Mattress was nothing special. The bathroom was ok, small, quaint, but the tub (also a spa tub) dripped water on the floor. The tub wasn't level so water would collect on it and would make its way down to the floor, so I had to be aware of that and put towels to stop the water from dripping onto the floor. The Union Hotel does not h ave its own parking spaces, so you need to park on the street which was safe, but there was limited parking and you would have to hunt for parking. The POSITIVE: The Hotel is located right in downtown Benicia which was within easy walking distance of Restaurants, shops, etc and near the water/ocean. On the last day there, they had a "Foodie Festival" in downtown Benicia which was fantastic. The staff was very friendly and nice, although they are only there certain hours of the day (not 24 hrs).

I have always wanted to check out this hotel, in the heart of my hometown, so I was excited to stay. The hotel was run down but quaint, room was large, and had a great streetside view, so I tried to look over issues I saw, (elevator that was very old, did not stop at the floor when the door opened, and was a tripping hazard, no access if you were in a wheel chair, entrance was steps only, no ramp, room fixtures where very old, no working clock or phone, sink fixtures leaked, and hot water was not adequately warm enough or had enough to complete a short shower, continental breakfast was very meager, nothing hot was served, lots of processed foods, very little fresh items offered, and coffee was worse than a 711 brew despite being attached to a restaurant and coffee shops close by to supply, AC very meager, room was cold) But what I had real issues was at 230Am on the morning of my last night at the hotel the building fire alarm was set off. We had to evacuate the building and no hotel staff where available to take charge. I had to direct the fireman who came to the fire alarm box and let them into the building. It turns out they had a faulty alarm node in the restaurant attached, but by the time I was able to get into my room it was after 4am which runed my early start for the next day. I inquired on compensation, and a thank you for my services and nothing. I would NOT recommend this establishment, too old, faulty and customer service Missing in action. dangerous!

It was fine but the water pressure wasn’t enough to rinse your hair. Which in the end didn’t matter since they didn’t give us any shampoo or shower gel, only conditioner. When the heater kicked in it was loud and woke me At 7am some guy was leaf blowing outside our window which wasn’t really their fault but still. At 10am they were knocking on our door to see if we were checking out even though they have an 11am check out time.

The hotel is like stepping back in time, some of the rooms have great views. The in site restaurant was very good and there are plenty of shopping and dining within walking distance.

Above the jacuzzi tub and fit for anyone under 5.5 feet tall. Being 6’3, it was difficult to shower. Very odd set up, but I get the age of the hotel and what not. This is an historical hotel in use since the 1late 800's. Very quaint period furnishings. Antique furniture throughout with the exception of the flat screen TV and in suite Jacuzzi tub. Very comfortable with nice product in the bath. EXCELLENT restaurant/bar on the 1st floor. The only thing we missed this time was a ghostly encounter!!!!

The rooms are decorated with antiques with adds to the charm of the hotel. My only concern was the very low water pressure in the bathroom sink, however the shower was okay. The TV was very small, but we didn't mind as the atmosphere makes up for it. We will be back!

Street parking only: so park where you can find a spot. Comfortable, old-time atmosphere. (a step into the past) Antique furnishings - but with electricity and a jacuzzie tub. Want ice for your ice bucket, go to the bartender in the bar that is part of the property. Elevator - 3 floors View is Main Street or the adjacent one-block long side street. I don't know about a view from any of the other rooms. Only staffed part-time, but the lady was very nice. Attached restaurant looked very nice. I did not eat there because I was gone most of the time. Locked entry door: so very secure (safe). Bed was very comfortable. I could hear the people walking by on the street, but it was not loud enough to be a problem for me. I would stay there again.

It was a very cute historic hotel on a lovely street with lots of shops and dining. We enjoyed our one night stay. There was a car show the morning we checked out so got woken up a little early with the cars coming in, but it was nice to walk down the street and look at the cars. The hotel was clean and quaint. I love staying in places like this.

Street surrounding the hotel was dirty with lots of trash . Towels needed to be replaced, clean but thread bare. Noise ( loud music) from one of the surrounding pubs was very loud until very late.

The location was perfect for my needs. Staff was helpful. Room was lovely and clean. I hope to go and stay again.

The bathtub was filthy and I soon learned why. Wastewater bubbled up into the tub from somewhere! There were 2 enormous screws sticking out of the headboard which I almost banged my head on and the armoire was wobbly. There was no staff to help on site and no one answered the phone. I didn’t feel safe so I left and stayed at a friend’s house. I will not be back!

Hotel was vintage but also old in upkeep and maintenance. It was very clean but very old. Descriptions and pictures online weren’t overly representative of actual room. Definately need dead bolts on inside of rooms.

Great location in Benecia. Close to everything. Nice ocean breeze with the windows open. Classic bar and restaurant. comfortable clean room. Compared to the chain hotels this hotel is so unique and original! So much character! This hotel has been in business since the 1880's!

I loved the room that we stayed in. The room was very clean. It would be nice if the TV was a smartTV and maybe a bit larger screen. We only stayed for one night and it was mostly to see if we experienced any paranormal activity. Sad and happy to say that we did not see any ghosts, although there were two incidents that were questionable. The bed was supper comfy! Very disappointed that they are no longer offering breakfast as stated in the website.

It’s was such a beautiful room with a gorgeous view of the bay. The only issue we had was the kitchen exhaust fan ran until 11pm and vibrates the whole wall, bed, and floor. The minute it shuts off it’s silent. Also no continental breakfast, no one was in the lobby when we left at 7:30…but there’s a great coffee shop across the street.

I liked the antique vibe of the hotel, however I feel there are small details that can be improved on. We stayed in the Victorians room. The few hangers provided were old wire hangers that were bent. The small drawer in the bathroom had holes in it. The room was advertised with breakfast and there was no breakfast available. However, the bed was comfortable and the room size was bigger than average. The vanity was big enough to setup my workspace. The neighborhood had plenty of walkable shops and restaurants which was nice.

It is a charming place to stay, we had a gorgeous view. The plumbing is old so don’t expect luxury there. Hotel probably needs to replace mattresses as they are bent in the middle.

The view from my window was so relaxing and beautiful, as it moved from daylight, to twilight, to sunset, to awakening to twinkling lights along the opposite shores.

Nice hotel. Front desk hours posted as 7a-10a and again 2p-5p so check in at 2 is definitely no earlier than 2. However, free breakfast didn’t happen on 7/21/24 because no one came to open up. But our room, Paradise Beach, was clean and spacious. Has a giant jacuzzi tub but we didn’t use it. AC worked great.

Premium location with wonderful views around the neighborhood. Staff was helpful and friendly. The building is in need of repairs both inside and out. The bed was too high to get in and out of comfortably. The upstairs back entry did not lock properly.

I enjoyed the historical aspect and the staff was wonderful. It was beautiful.

Great location

Property is older and perfection is not expected however, we enjoyed our stay very much. Perfect location. In the middle of everything and that’s what we wanted. The air conditioner provided a muffle from any noise from the hustle and bustle of First Street activity. Definitely would stay again. In fact, we’ve stayed here multiple times and have never been disappointed.

Quiet, comfortable, restaurant and bar attached so I didn’t have to out for dinner. Breakfast included with yoghurt, cereal, juice, eggs. It feels like home to me
