Abpopa Hillcrest

Appreciated the easy and responsive check in. Enjoyed the unique style of the room and it was filled with light and the little kitchenette. The bathroom was an odd layout but clean. Cool little cafe in the downstairs breezeway. Would stay here again.

I was going out downtown and wanted a close stay but that had onsite parking as I didn't want to leave my car downtown overnight. Abpopa was the perfect place. $8 uber to anywhere you want to go. abpopa was charming, staff was present and friendly and helpful, room was cozy and quiet and clean. I slept great. Lots of good food right outside the front doors. Great spot can't wait to go back.

Cute little boutique hotel in Hillcrest neighborhood. Area appeared safe and had no issues during stay. Great security measures in place in a gated building. Rooms were small but adequate for their purpose. Only complaint was the small ackward bathroom set up in the units i stayed in. Would definitely consider this property again with a future stay in San Diego.

I knew this was a "different" kind of hotel when I was told after I booked that there was no front desk or staff on property and you just use a code to get into the building and your room. Ok I'm fine with that even if it is odd. My biggest issues were the parking and room itself. Parking: There are maybe 10 parking spots for this whole hotel. When we arrived (at 3pm) all spots were already taken. If you can get a spot its $25 for the night but you CANT leave. If you leave and someone takes your spot, oh well. Guess you just wasted $25. There's a huge parking lot next door but it will cost you $100 to park for the night. So we ended up hunting for street parking and found a spot 2 blocks away. This meant we couldn't leave without fear of losing our spot. So we were essentially stuck at the hotel. Luckily there is some stuff to do within walking distance. The Room: The room has tons of windows, which is nice in theory. However, there are no black out shades! So at 7am when the sun comes up the room is flooded with light. Hope you didn't plan on sleeping in. The bed was comfortable but is insanely squeaky. Any move you make is LOUD. But the weirdest thing was the bathroom. There isn't one! It is a toilet and shower in the middle of the room! No walls but just a foldable screen type thing that offers some "privacy". But not really because it doesn't even go up to the ceiling. So whoever you're sharing the room with will hear and smell everything. Talk about uncomfortable!

Check in was easy and the location was convenient. Parking good too. I will be back

Property was close to everything. Property was clean. However, elevator broke Friday night and climbing 5 flights of stairs was not ideal. Made the stay a lot less desirable specially when parking was not close by.

The location is good, but the bathroom "door" is one of the worst features I have ever encountered. There is no privacy in the bathroom. It would be fine if you are staying in the room by yourself, but it is extremely awkward if you are not. The parking situation is also not great. If you are going to charge for parking, you need to paint some numbers in the parking area and guarantee the spot to the guest who paid for it. We didn\'t move our car the whole time we were there because we were concerned about losing the spot.

Loved this modern hip budget hotel that did almost everything perfectly. Parking kinda sucks and there should be a coffeemaker in every room and some clothes hangers. But otherwise it was wonderful. We especially liked the Gooseberries cafe with its exceptional scones ( which run out fast) other pastries and egg sandwiches plus gracious knowledgeable staff. Coffee there is a must every morning and who can resist a pastry. We didnt get a chance to try happy hour or we'd be raving about that too! Back to the hotel, cozy, nice mattress, very clean, great light, relaxed. We will be back!

A funky and fun concept with great views of the Hillcrest area in both directions. However it felt a little ‘tired’ and in need of a freshening of paint and linens/upholstery. E.g. the under-sheet had pilling and the couch had ‘mystery’ stains in need of additional steam cleaning.

Super dirty - as in sticky floor, stained furniture. Shower moldy. No mirror. Toilet had sink behind it to save water (ok) but how on earth would you wash your face or brush your teeth?!? The bowl was smaller than the tank cover. Straddling the toilet would be the only option. Odd elevator with a code that you had to punch into a box that was half off. Just…. Nasty.

location was convenient to restaurants and bars, and to the freeway. I like it has refrigerator, microwave and a kettle. I appreciate the eco-friendly system in the bathroom However, the place felt dirty and not well-maintained. The bed made noise.

The room was unique with loft, the bed comfortable and clean and [my] AC was working well. (Met other guests who were in a unit with no working AC). The windows were failing with condensation between the double pane, obstructing view. The furniture was very stained - so much, I wasn’t comfortable relaxing on them. Cobwebs, garbage in the upper corner of the room. Walls, ceilings and window coverings were marred with scuff marks or liquid stains of undetermined origin. Shower curtain had black mildew stains. No bathroom sink, so all hygiene routines happened at the kitchenette, stainless steel basin. 3 spoons and 2 knives provided in kitchenette. Lots of nightly foot traffic in the elevators by single fellas~ This place had potential, but I will not be staying here again.

Furniture was incredibly soiled. Did not feel comfortable sitting on it without a towel. Door lock kept malfunctioning, had to hold to door itself at certain angle to get it to close. The bathroom door didn’t close all the way, dragged on the floor.

The apartment is small. The bed is in a sleeping loft created in the original apartment. As such, the loft has a low ceiling- I could touch the ceiling while lying flat on the bed. The stairs to the loft are steep. All was clean and worked great. The area is lively, with restaurants and bars. It seemed very safe and friendly.

Not super clean. Some furniture needs repair or upgrade. I had curtains stained in my room but the management was super responsive and moved me to a better room. The Internet was slow though. Maybe it was just in my room because I saw lots of people were using their laptops downstairs. Also the amount of homeless people around the hotel doesn’t add it a charm. The AC was working but because of the room design, the living area was not getting enough cool air, making it hot while it was freezing by the entrance and kitchen area. This place has an interesting design, but I wish the maintenance of this place was better.

Great views but the bathroom is not in its own room and has no privacy. It is basically a stall in the room. It feels very much like a hostel. The shower was dirty and the shower bar was held together with a paper towel.

I regret that I only had 1 night to experience the service at this place. Everything was great, the room was clean, not too big but comfortable. Plus points for this place being close to downtown and the places I wanted to go. I will come back.

Did not sleep at all!! So much noise outside the windows! Trash truck started at 5am. From 3-5am it was gang cars playing reallly really loud music. I even recorded it. The chairs in the room were filthy dirty with stains.

Parking lot lights are very bright and only have sun screens over the windows so it was very bright in the room

The place is ok. The neighborhood feels a little sketchy at night, but we had no issues. The whole place feels a little DIY, so definitely not fancy, but functional. The beds were comfortable, but the ladders up to the lofts were steep and one had only a single rail. Once you're up there, it's very short, so you need to be ok with getting around on hands and knees. The bathroom is fine, but the door didn't have a latch of any sort. We used the one table to hold our suitcases, since there's no way we were taking them up the ladders. So the main room was for dressing and such. All fine for a family weekend, but you have to be ok with basically no privacy. One concern was that the smoke detector was missing; just wires dangling from the ceiling. All in all, it was fine, and very conveniently located. But definitely not a place you want to hang out.

Buyers warning: Read the small print; i failed to do so. This hotel consists of micro-lofts, not appropriate for a couple in their 70's who have balance challenges and the need to get up multiple times per night to relieve their bladders. Negotiating multiple stairs in dim light is a recipe for a physical disaster. The rooms are organized compactly is that it's like living on a boat. Some absurdities show up, like a TV with no place to sit in front of. Also, every thing is unlocked with a code: gate. elevator and room. This is a unique property that has physical and mental requirements to inhabit. PS on-site manager was very kind and helpful to the best of her ability.

The lobby was nice and it felt like I made the correct choice. Until I entered the room. The room looked nothing like the pictures I saw. It was super tiny. It didn't even look like it was finished. Lots of raw wood construction with no paint. There were literal ladders you had to climb to get up to the sleeping areas. The sleeping areas that only had about three and a half feet of ceiling space. Very claustrophobic. I would have been better off booking a hostel. Not happy with the experience. I won't be back.

Have stayed here multiple times and I love it. The larger rooms toward the top of the building have better views, but an open air bathroom situation. If you want more privacy for the bathroom, I would recommend getting a studio room.

I had a very smooth check-in. Just checked in on the building’s website. They gave me a passcode to get through the front gate passcode for the elevator and a passcode for the room. The room was pretty unique, sort of whimsical and fun. The bed was so comfortable I slept a full eight hours each night, which is very odd for me. I would definitely recommend staying here while in San Diego

Check staff provided a friendly and very helpful service. There were some problems not of their making and they dealt with them in a very professional and caring manner. Great little spot in an interesting area. Lots of eating options close by.

Hotel is not easy to access given than there is no staff you have to remember the codes they give you . They were accommodating and easy to deal with

Nice staff super flexible with check in and multiple bookings at different times. All around I’m in love with property. Very unique rooms and setup just a different fun vibe. The area is so accessible on foot to everything you need.

Great property in the best neighborhood! I am a solo traveler. My room had a curtain over the shower and toilet ( no wall) which was fine by me but maybe not for groups. The restaurant downstairs was amazing and all of the staff was so wonderful

We've stayed at the Abpopa several times. The rooms are quirky but always clean and comfortable. The location is unbeatable. Countless restaurants, bars and shopping opportunities within a block or two. Management is very attentive and goes out of their way to make sure you have everything you need for a great stay.

The view was beautiful and the entire experience was amazing with friendly manager.

Lovely stay at Abpopa, cool layout feels modern, artsy. Excellent location for the Hillcrest nightlife, walkable to Balboa Park & Bankers Hill neighborhood. Definitely would stay again.

Perfect spot to be in the heart of the city

The property was great but I heard a lot of shouting in the alley below and when I went for a local walk, homeless people would come up to me all the time.

We loved our stay! Parking was easy and the cafe downstairs had great coffee and very convenient. We were able to walk to Balboa park and tons of other attractions and appreciated the friendly service by staff.

Old uncomfortable beds. Accessible location lots of great places to dine within walking distance, everyone is super nice. At night is another story. Scary, drunk/junkies outside the door laid out on sidewalk walkway. Do not go out at night. I was frightened and shaking when I went to get water at the gas station next door. Not a good experience. Do not go out at night.

The location of this property can't be beat. It is more of an air bnb and not a hotel. The room/restroom is a very open which can be fun if you like your toilet in the living room. :) The area around the hotel is sketchy after dark but I never felt unsafe. You can walk to everything in the Hillcrest area which is its saving grace.

Location to the Hillcrest neighborhood restaurants is excellent. The room was very spacious. The main issues are nose. Nose from the street, noise from people outside on the sidewalk, noise from the room next to us. There were multiple homeless people who hang out right on the sidewalk by the hotel. These issues would not prevent me from returning.

Cute place! Quaint and the on site manager was very friendly! There was a cute coffee shop at the bottom.

The restaurant was not open the entire time I was there.

Well, the breakfast wasn't free (it was $60), but it was quite good. The room was gigantic & had a fantastic view, and the location was great. Things in the room showed some use, though. The sink fixtures were falling apart, and some of the lights were burnt out. But we had a great stay, and the bed is super comfy. A nice spot that just needs a little more TLC than it is currently gettting.
