Hotel Grand Stark

The hotel was super cute and the staff was really nice. I highly recommend an eye mask and really strong ear plugs as the windows didn't block much sound. The cocktail bar in the back of the hotel was filled with great drinks and the bartender was super nice and we nerded out talking about drinks. It's $40 a night to valet park but there is tons of street parking Friday night to Monday morning if you're street parking.

All in all the stay was really nice the employees were fantastic. The only downside was the $55 a night for valet parking.

Parking was literally impossible to find, staff said to use the parking app… two hour maximum everywhere nearby. Thankfully we booked on a weekend and only had to pay from 8-10 Monday AM, I feel bad to whoever stays here mid week. Absolute nightmare

We loved our stay here! Super cute and clean. The bar happy hour was fun and the service was great. The only thing I’d say is rooms are not sound proof so you can hear a lot of movement of people are in hallways. Other than that it was a great stay and we will definitely be back.

Loved the old architecture of the building. Staff was awesome. Restaurants were closed for remodeling. No parking on site except for valet. Which was 40.00

I didnt like the fact that the property required valet parking, which I didnt mind paying $55 for. However, the valet was available from 7AM to 11PM. This created issues with me checking out at 5AM as I was told I could not valet park but had to park my car on the streets and couldn't suggest exactly where. Also, I noticed one of the days that my rental car had the front part of the bumper hit something and popped out, to which I could only guess occured from the valet parking. I did not see this until I was already driving around.

Well, I expected to find parking because in the ad it said that there was accessible parking. Well, it's valet parking more than half of your night's rent for each night. That was a shocker because that wasn't mentioned in the ad. It made me feel uncomfortable and just combobulated but the friendly staff at the front desk and the woman who dealt with the car just kept talking to me until I really understood. I wouldn't come here again because it's just for that reason. The rest of it is pretty good. Very very clean. There's no real place there to buy like little snacks and stuff. You have to use the mini bar which is expensive of course. And you really don't have access to your car. Once you give it to the valet in a good lot, I think indoors that's a block away. The only other difficulty for me was that the bed was too low. I have knee problems and it would have been nice to know that. I don't need a high bed but I need a regular height of bed so that was strange. Lots of good selections in the mini bar though a little bit. A lot of snacks and drinks of all types. Very nice. I am very thankful to the staff because they helped me through a situation that was foreign to me. All right. Hopefully this helps you make a decision.

Front desk staff very unwelcoming and unhelpful. Overall a pretty terrible experience for an expensive hotel. Very poor lighting in the room as well. Bed comfortable, room clean. But overall the rest of the experience truly sucked.

It was a chic hotel, but i was surprised and disappointed that the sink was not cleaned. There was toothpaste in it that had not been cleaned.

Overall very cute hotel and super friendly staff that was extremely accommodating. My biggest issue was the cleanliness. There were really gross stains on the bench in my room and one of the hand towels. The bedding smelled like it wasn’t cleaned properly at all. It smelled like old sweat. I did inform the front desk and the woman came and personally changed the bedding, which I really appreciated. I think if they just take better care of the cleaning, it would be a great hotel.

The room was spotless and top-notch!! The staff went above and beyond being very attentive and accommodating!!!

Room was kinda clean. The bed was gross. Yellow stains, shower was not clean. Hotel staff was absolutely pleasant! Lacks so many amenities.

Disappointed by my stay here. My room had strands and clumps of another guests hair in the bed, on the shower and on the floor. My towels were damp and dirty. The room was not soundproofed well and I could hear fighting and drunk ramblings from the street below and some of the front desk staff were less than welcoming.

The location of this hotel is great for walkability within northeast Portland and the look of the hotel is nice. Unfortunately our room was dirty - empty cans left in the mini fridge, no body wash in the shower, sticky spot on the floor, sheets were dirty, etc. and the hotel itself was extremely loud. The floors are old wood floor and you can hear everyone walking and closing doors all night long. It is next to some construction as well, which was not advertised. Our bathroom also didn’t have a sink in it… you had to walk around the room to use the sink and mirror after showering or using the bathroom. I don’t recommend the hotel based on our stay.

I really wanted to love this hotel. It is very cute, but unfortunately the street noise made it almost impossible to sleep. I was also disappointed that the blanket on the bed had multiple dark stains, and the sheets has holes and more stains.

Arrived to an overly fragrant lobby that was a little nauseating. The elevator also had a musky, foul smell. The room faced the street and the street noise woke us at all hours of the night. We inquired about switching rooms but weren’t accommodated. There were nails protruding from the floorboards in the hotel room that I stepped on and had to place a shoe over to cover to prevent further pain. Housekeeping never came to our room over four days to tidy up, except to mysteriously remove one black face cloth from the sink and not replace it. Disappointing experience overall.

This hotel is very European with the bathroom and sink disconnected. The street view is beautiful but can be very loud throughout the entire night. The bed is great but very low to the ground so anyone over the age of 30 would truly struggle getting in and out. The building also said no smoking but smelled of cigarettes. This location is great and The staff was friendly and helpful.

While the room was clean, beautiful, and comfortable, the room was right next to a very noisy street, and the windows are single paned with no curtains, so there was no protection from the noise or light of the city, and it was quite drafty. My spouse and I literally could not sleep and had to cancel our plans because of it. The room had some expensive details in it that we felt would have been spent on better windows , curtains, and insulation.

The hotel is lovely and updated, but is located in a area that is rife with homeless people sleeping on the sidewalks. Not their fault, just something to be aware of. The room layout was a challenge for us. The toilet & shower are in their own room, while the sink & mirror are in another area. There were no drawers to put clothing or necessities away, just cubby slots. I also felt that the mattress had seen better days.

The staff was incredibly kind. Had an A/C unit, comfortable matresses, very cute looking place. Plugins in rooms, great space. However, parking is limited, overnight parking ends very early, but street parking is all around, generally safe it seemed. The walls are thin, I could hear people moving all around me sounded like they were in my room. The lighting is very dim, The shower was so close to the knob I kept smashing my arm on it while shampooing my hair. There

Room was decorated very quaint and cute. Bed was very comfortable but walls were paper thin and housekeeping was vacuuming in the hallway bright and early. Did not understand the point of a mini fridge slammed full of items to purchase rather than having some space to store some of our things to stay cold. The cold water on our faucet did not work and upon notifying staff was told to come down to get water out of the canister next to the front desk each time. Stayed here due to proximity to a local event but would not likely stay in the future.

Beautiful rooms and great staff. The walls are very thin, so you can hear everything in the halls. But, if you want something cute, downtown, with lovely staff, this is a good choice.

This hotel is in a historic building from the late 1800's, but it has had the most adorable renovation! Rooms are extremely cute, and staff is very friendly, attentive, and helpful. That being said, the building itself has some issues due to its age. The floor is uneven in many places as they have the original hardwood floors, but that was only a minor inconvenience. Just know that if you indulge in the fancy booze in the bar, you may not be as drunk as you think you are if you find yourself a little off balance walking back to your room! The major issue we had is we had a room on the outer part of the building on Stark St, and the traffic noise was so loud it was like we were sleeping on the sidewalk outside. The walls were brick, the windows were double pane, and the windows were shut, but there seemed to be no muffling at all of the sounds of the Portland Streets below. I have a feeling this is due to the age of the building as when the building was built, there were still horse-drawn carriages going along the streets, but it was a bit hard to sleep when we could hear every truck, car and bike going by outside. Also, the honking of some of the Portland drivers was a bit excessive. In the past we had an interior room towards the center of the building and didn't have this issue. This hotel is beyond adorable and the staff is great, but if you get an exterior room it is very loud. Perhaps try to request an interior room more central in the building when booking a stay!

The Grand Stark isn't for everyone. First, you need to factor in that because of its location, there are many homeless people in the area. This is just the reality of a hotel in downtown Portland. Second, this is not a shiny, ultra-modern hotel. The real wood floors are uneven and a bit creaky, the bed is oddly close to the ground, and the sink is oddly located. The rooms are small but somehow feel a bit a larger than they actually are. Travelers who can put these minor issues aside will find this to be a charming hotel where everything works really well. I'm a stickler for plumbing, and the shower and drains all performed far better than those at the $300/night Hilton where I stayed recently. The internet is fast (~100Mb/s), the hot water is hot, and the elevators are roomy and reliable. As a plus, the adjacent Grand Amari restaurant is a welcome oasis of fine dining in this neighborhood. Above all, though the staff members are top notch -- friendly, helpful, and genuine. They really make you feel welcome and seem to be perfect hosts for this atypical hotel. If you can get past its imperfections, you will find the Hotel Grand Stark to be a welcoming, comfortable, and delightful place to stay.

The place was nice and clean. It’s a Pali hotel so it’s cute. The layout of the room was kind of strange but it worked ok. Basic tv, no Netflix etc.

in true portland fashion, this hotel is quirky. i'm no expert on star ratings, but this hardly feels deserving of a 4-star title. no early check in option, which is understandable for such a small hotel. sheets and pillow cases feel like they're made of construction paper and mattress is very thin. the bathroom light is on a 5 minute timer that apparently cannot be adjusted, so plan on showering in the dark. windows have zero insulation, so there is a nightly symphony of screaming homeless folks, car alarms, and ambulance sirens to rouse you from sleep. still, staff is very friendly and accommodating, and even though they close relatively early, both bars are lovely. probably won't stay here again but it's a decent option for a conveniently located inner southeast stay.

I ended up not staying here. When I went to check-in after the 3pm time frame, I was not welcomed. The front desk staff couldn’t get the computers to work and had no alternative way to check me in. I was encouraged to come back later! When? I contacted Hotels and the agent I talked with was unable to get anyone to answer the phone.

There are so many reasons not to stay here, but let's start with the hotel's greeting. I got there less than an hour before check-in. Although the room was ready, the woman at the front desk insisted that an early check-in is $50/hour. Yep! She insisted. So I waited 50 minutes in the lobby with her watching me the whole time until exactly 2:58pm when she finally said that I could check in. I emailed the General Manager about this policy, and he admitted, "These fees come from either the brand or upper level management and are rarely, if ever, imposed by the property manager." --Note that he said, rarely imposed. He went on to say, "It is often a challenge to address some of the “grey” areas with members of our staff, especially when they might be somewhat inexperienced." Clearly, they hire "somewhat inexperienced" staff and don't train them well. So what about the room? On the surface they've redone a really old building to look rustic and modern, but that comes with some compromises... .like old wood floors with nail heads sticking out, skinning my wife's bare foot. Then there's the bathroom that has a shower and a toilet but NO SINK!! So, you do your business, flush, then you have to open the bathroom door and walk around to the kitchen area to wash your hands? How unsanitary! Also, the hotel staff didn't bother to check whether the shampoo, conditioner, and body wash were filled. At least in my room, they weren't. More issues but not enough space. Although the building appears to be an old building, everything was very clean. The rooms are pretty small but because it was for business it worked fine for me. Facility was fine but I was more irritated at my arrival. I was early and was hoping to check in early. When I asked the front desk about checking in, the individual responded to me very negatively. Maybe this is the policy, maybe they were full and unable to I don’t know but the response seemed like it was unwarranted. Usually the term “hospitality” means just that, being hospitable to the patrons who are paying for their service. Treat everyone with respect. Unfortunately, for this specific reason, I will most likely never return to this hotel. In fact if there wasn’t a cancellation fee I would’ve changed hotels that day.

Rude & accusatory front desk staff ruined what had been an otherwise nice stay.

Room was very cool and clean. However, i was meeting a date for dinner and they issued him a key to my room. I came out of the shower to him sitting on the esge of my bed. He was not registered to the room. I met him online. It was a little scary.

A great hotel with excellent staff, very comfy beds, and a calm and relaxed environment. We found that the people in Portland were so friendly, it almost felt as if it wasn't real, but after a few days in the city we realised everyone was just incredibly kind and genuine! The hotel staff were no exception - very welcoming and helpful; even after we left some of our belongings there and had travelled 700 miles down the coast, they were kind enough to reach out to us to advise of the error and support with having the items shipped to our next hotel ahead of our departure from the USA, which was a very time sensitive situation. The valet team were also brilliant! We also stayed in a Palihotel in San Francisco, another of the 'Palisociety' hotels group which Grand Stark is part of, and found that the in-room amenities were better at Grand Stark, and the staff were levels above. We had a wonderful time and would stay again!

Beautiful boutique hotel in the heart of Portland. We enjoyed the cleanliness and ultra modern yet unique stylishness of the hotel, it definitely has its own character, charm, and identity which was lively and impressive. It looked to be maintained very well - super clean and tidy and the issues brought upon the management were readily and promptly handled by the manager Shawn, which was greatly appreciated by us. We will definitely stay again if and when we return to Portland.

Clean property and very friendly staff. Walk able to a variety of different restaurants & bars. Street noise could be problematic if there are a lot of horns. Beds are comfortable and we were able to sleep well.

I absolutely loved this hotel. Just gorgeous and clean :) The room was gorgeous. The only downside is the area outside wasn't the most comfortable to walk around. Some nomadic people around. It was no problem to just jump in the car to go to the next location. Again, I'm planning to stay there again. It was so cozy.

Very convenient hotel in SE Portland. Comfortable bed, basic amenities provided, and friendly staff. Very loud neighborhood at night til the bars closed so bring your ear plugs but otherwise great spot.

This is a very stylish, comfortable property. I would definitely stay here, but you should know ahead of time that it's not in the best neighborhood. It's not awful or dangerous, but it's kind of a light industrial area, and there's a homeless shelter right across the street from the hotel. There are also yoga studios and cafes nearby but it's definitely not the heart of the city.

Staff was very helpful and the rooms are beautiful and seemed clean. Solid location too. Quite a few things to do and restaurants within walking distance.

It was okay. A few things to note for future travelers: The hotel looks great in pictures, but is missing key amenities that are usually standard. The bathroom door lock broke and the front desk attendant (who did respond quickly) had to come remove the lock with a screwdriver to let me out (!!!). The free breakfast was just mini muffins and coffee or tea, nothing else. I asked the concierge about local restaurant recommendations but she didn't really have any and told me to use Uber Eats. Their valet parking costs $40 but there is ample street parking in front of the hotel so we did that instead. All in all, not a terrible experience but I probably wouldn't stay here again. For a similar price point, you can find a hotel that offers guests more amenities.

Great stylish property. Ample easy street parking within a block or two. Breakfast is just muffins, danishes and coffee/tea but they are actually decent pastries. Free Espresso in your room.

It was an average stay. Nothing really stands out as exceptional. We did like the happy hour pizza, that was exceptional!

We really enjoyed our stay! The hotel was charming, stylish and clean. Small but cozy room. The bar downstairs is also super cute and was fun to have a drink at. The area that surrounds the hotel was a little on the rougher side, with a homeless shelter right across the street. But we didn’t have any issues.

This is a nice boutique hotel in a great niche neighborhood. Great design and restaurant on site. Some routine maintace for an older building.

This is a beautiful boutique hotel within walking distance of Burnside bridge in the West and many cafe options on the East . Rooms are modern , clean and have beautiful decor . Bar offer very yummy small plates and many drink options . Front desk staff was very helpful with local information . Overall a gem in the area of Portland
