Britannia Hotel Coventry

On expedia the hotel promises free parking - a huge reason we chose the hotel. So we were very disappointed when on arrival we found out that there wasn't even a car park for the hotel, and we had to park in a public car park a short walk away that was very costly.

The hotel was OK, but generally run down as is so typical of British hotels. The carpets were filthy and worn down and one of the lifts was out of service the entire time I was there. Their 12 pound breakfast was seriously over priced. After this last trip I have decided I am not going to bother traveling to the UK ever again and the Britannia hotel is a factor in that decision. Basically, screw the UK.

The Britannia is a very tired old hotel in the centre of Coventry. It's location is probably its best feature. Otherwise, it is a tired, outdated, hotel, that looks dirty from the outside, and not better inside. My room had marks on the walls, a strange oil spot on the carpet, a hole where the light switch should be and difficult to work out shower. Even though we paid for breakfast, we weren't able to have any, as their breakfast room didn't open early enough, and they wouldn't/couldn't provide any sort of breakfast pack, as many hotels will now. Only one of the three lifts was working, so I found myself using the stairs to get down from the seventh floor. No wonder it was the only hotel in Coventry with available rooms the night we needed it to be there.

Dated but clean hotel. In need of a refurbishment. Radiator in room didn't work, plugged heater in but room was still cold. Otherwise quiet, and staff helpful. Parking was off site, not as described, and payable. OK for price paid (Hotels.com kindly refunded our parking cost too)

Location superb backing onto Cathedral. Room cheap & spacious but dated. Parking is nearest public car park, 5 mins walk. Reception staff unhelpful. WiFi expensive and slow. But room so cheap that extra for parking and wifi seemed reasonable.

Didn't like having to park in a public carpark so far from the Hotel especially when you have to put a pay and disply sticker in the window, telling anybody that looked, how long you were parking for. Otherwise very convenient location to see tlhe city attractions. The room was very basic, but clean and more than met our needs.

Might be my thought but no parking and had to pack five minutes away. Should say no parking

Hotels.com advertised free onsite parking but this is not available. Had trouble with the wifi but this seems to be the norm with Btittania hotels. It happened in Blackpool and the receptionist admitted its a problem in a lot of their hotels in rooms on high floors. Room was clean with a nice bath as I'd requested. The bed was a little uncomfortable for us but we both have back problems so it would probably be OK for other people.

No parking at property - they say free but i have to go to public parking in cold and pay seperately, false infromation

No ground floor rooms. I requested a ground floor room, we were put on the 6th floor! Staff totally uninterested in us. Kept us waiting. The parking was almost a mile away. I had to drop my disabled husband off and was given a postcode for the parking which I then had to walk back from alone, at night in the fading light. The side of the hotel building had drunks and homeless person begging. This added to my anxiety. The lifts were dirty and smelt stale. We were there to visit the Catherdral, when i asked for directions, the receptionist didn't have a clue where it was. It turns out the hotel backs onto the Cathedral, I would have thought a basic knowledge of the local area a must. Really disappointing.

The cleanliness was exceptional. The decor of my room on the 5th floor was nice. Slept well. No problems. But I would have liked a warmer welcome when I checked in. Please ask staff to say 'Welcome'. They might like to ask 'Is this your first time to stay at Britannia?' 'Where have you travelled from today?' Anything like that would be nice and doesn't take long!

I didnt know what to expect, cos of the mixed nature of previous review. However, I was surprised. The hotel is old, obviously but they have done their best to keep it clean and tidy. The hallway to my floor was a bit dank, but it could be due to anything. The room however was very clean, comfortable I dare say. The rug could be changed but it was not an irritation. Everything you need for a basic room was there, including an Iron. So yes, I was surprised.

Horrible stay ever, the wasrooms were not cleaned there were pee marks all over . room was untidy . the tables had food wastes not cleaned . taps were not working properly . Total night mare it was . I dought it sheets were changed .

The place was close to the town centre, easily accessible, parts of the room was very dusty and moulds found in parts of the bathroom. I loved their food. First receptionist absolutely terrible (seemed like she didn’t want to work) but excellent customer care from one on the second day. Overall stay was average

The location is good, right in the city centre. The reception area is ok. However, the rest of the hotel needs an upgrade. The room itself and definitely the bathroom needed upgrading. The room seemed clean enough but when I hung something in the wardrobe it got dusty.

Check in staff was rude, felt unwelcome. Could sleep due to loud banging outside and the room itself was not very clean. Towels etc had marks on them & grime in the shower.

I can't grumble at the place. It was £40 for a Saturday night in the city center. The rooms were clean, had the usual facilities you'd expect and it was quiet. I'll be more than happy to come again.

The hotel is so dated and needs a deep clean especially in reception. Dirty doors and floors , receptionist wasn’t too friendly either

I was hopeful when I saw the lobby but the hotel is getting quite run down. It was hot when we were there, there is no air conditioning and the windows (I am assuming for safety) only opened a few inches so it was nearly impossible to get any air into the room unless I also opened the door (with limited effect).

Tvin corner of room, attached to wall so could not face bed. Old shower attached to taps. Bed side lamps, 1 in middle of bed and other no where near side of bed.

Stayed for 2 nights on business and was disappointed with the room which was tired looking with the shower broken and hot water tap in the sink. Power plug is across the room and not near the bed so cannot use phone if it needs charging. My key card didn't work on the last night which I got replaced from reception but still. Maid never came on the 2 nights I had booked there. Glasses in the bathroom were dirty so I didn't use them. The best thing about this place is the express check out box, making it easier to leave.

Curtains were not long enough to cover window so when the sun came up the room was lit up. Dirty socks left under a bed. Stains on carpet. Constant noise from lifts. Room needs lots of TLC. Bathroom was not up to par. Staff were okay but ignorant and dismissive when checking in. Slept well.

In need of an overhaul. Very pleasant staff throughout. Room had stains on the carpets, and cigarette burns . Bathroom clean but tired. Shower gel dispenser just seemed to have water in it. Room very warm, window only opened slightly. Fan supplied but extremely loud. The area is beside the university, while my car lasted the night parked nearby, I wasn’t confident it was going to still be there in the morning. I was only passing through so it was ok, but very hard to recommend.

Staff friendly and happy to please. Breakfast was excellent - hot, lots of variety, plentiful too. However one of the worst nights sleep I have had for a long time. ! The bed was extremely hard and as I have arthritis and fibromyalgia, it has brought on a bad flare up. I am in a lot of pain as a result. Even my husband had a bad night for the same reason ! As a result we wil it stay at this hotel again.

Three nights. Spacious twin room. Comfortable beds, enough towels. Really clean. Staff were helpful and friendly. The hotel is obviously tired but so what. Great location near lots of food and drink options and only a 15 min walk to the station. Only complaint which is the same with all Britannias is no plug sockets by the beds.

Very nice and spacious

Very reasonably priced for a city hotel. Very convenient for the coach station. I would definitely book this hotel again. The room was much better than I expected and was very clean. The only fault I had was there was no socket at the side of the bed to charge a phone.

Staff are always very welcoming as im a regular guest at this hotel.

Refused check in because we had no ID. Wasn't informed before hand we needed any. Stopped in many hotels in the UK and never needed my ID. Staff were extremely rude and very unhelpful, just saying that there was plenty of 9ther hotels we could try. Wouldn't give us any details to help with a refund and became aggressive trying to force us. Avoid this place at all costs.

Never got to stay there. Still need a refund. I came fro. Surrey. They rused me entry for no good reason. The place was filthy in reception . I had ID. However a man turned up signed in without any ID but they let him stop. Someone complained about lighting and hot water while i was in reception. The staff were rude and awful.

We was asked for photo id when checking in even though they hadn't stated that when i booked the stay the receptionist wasn't helpful telling us we couldn't stay there until i got them to speak to the manager eventually they gave us the keys but the rooms were not very nice there was nails hanging out the wall the wardrobe had a door missing and the flooring in the bathroom was peeling away. I definitely wouldn't recommend staying here

Not a welcoming staff.

Checking in was slow, with computer frozen during the process and staff working under demanding pressure with lots to check in. Other customers returning to reception with keys not working and another not able to get into their room due to an error that the check in staff made the day before. Check in processes and the hotel seems dated, causing longer than required waits for the customer. It was one member of staff checking lots of guest in then eventually the manager helped out.

Great staff and very spacious room.

Very nice hotel. The staff on the front desk and security staff were friendly and helpful. The room was very clean and comfortable. I requested a travel cot for my little one and on arrival it was all ready and set up for us. I would recommend and would stay here again. Some reviews put us off, however we had no issues or concerns

It was value for the money, nice location

It's in central Coventry, with the cathedral and shops a few minutes walk away, and the Transport Museum over the road. It's also right next to the main bus station (which connects to the trains, which connect to the planes...). Condition-wise, I've always thought that this Britannia betters its Birmingham counterpart, and this still seems to be the case. Everything in my room worked, it was reasonably clean, but things like wallcoverings, bathroom grout and carpet had all seen better days. Sleep comfort was quite good, though in this warm spell the room was a little stuffy and being quite central there is always going to be some traffic noise. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this hotel if you're not too fussy about the decor - it's public transport friendly, and fair value.

Very dated inside. Felt very safe due to security guards at front of hotel on Saturday night. There was an incident when I arived. Area around hotel was 'rough'.

Good location for pubs and restaurants, as well as looking around the cathedrals. By bus station so good for bus routes to the Coventry stadium

Hotel was fairly run down, but was perfectly adequate and represented good value for money given the price paid. It's conveniently located for the city centre. Whilst it seems a little rough, I by no means felt unsafe. Given the price I would definitely stay there again.

Place stank of weed on our floor Whole place is in dire need of updating and decorating Went out for food as choice in restaurant was limited but breakfast was pretty good

Very good value for money place to stay in the heart of Coventry City Centre As an irregular regular of the Britannia Coventry, staying for a couple of nights every two months or I am pleased to report that I noticed improvements are being made and that on every visit the hotel gets better in terms of décor and maintenance yet there still remains much to do. The reception area does not present a fantastic first impression and I could believe that some potential guests would turn around at this point and not stay, however, then you would not be in receipt of a wonderful welcome by the hard-working yet very professional, efficient and friendly staff. The route to the room could be improved with the cleanliness of the lifts nearly always an issue for me, the new carpets in the corridors are a great addition. The room was first of all larger than most, it was nicely decorated and well maintained, new chairs, the television was very small and old but did the job. The bed had a very comfortable mattress with an okay duvet and pillows. The bathroom was again large, yet let the room down given its dated state, though the shower had brilliant water pressure and the room was exceptionally clean. The bar is OK, I have only had drinks and they were pricey but very good, can’t comment on the food but £13.50 pp for breakfast is expensive compared to say Travelodge or Premier Inn. The locatio is fabulous for the main bus station (across the road), the train station is a taxi or bus

Just poor in terms of the real word "hospitality". Didn't see any kitchen or bar. Had to walk some miles to grab me any nice meal...

Ok hotel in an excellent location. Very good buffet breakfast.

Welcoming staff, decent sizes room. Good heating in the room. However, no water provided in the room. Had to go down to the restaurant to fill my bottle several times. The restaurant also closed at 9 & was closed on 29th April. Average. Definitely not worth £54 for one night.
