Really lovely hotel, bang in the middle of Oxford. Very friendly staff, comfortable rooms and interesting building. It is an old prison so the layout can be unusual but it's a very interesting building. Our room had (very good) air conditioning which was handy, I don't think every room has it.

Very nice indeed. Very unusual as well which is what prompted us to book. Car parking at over GBP30/day felt pretty steep though and where we to go to Oxford again and stay at this property I would use a public car park, the nearest of which is only some 50meters away. The bedroom was well equipped, comfortable and very nice. The bar and restaurant were also very nice, well designed and very stylish. The hotel is well located being (currently) just outside the congestion charge zone but right on the edge of the shopping area and the pedestrian precinct.

Great place, staff were super helpful. FYI, late August 2025 there was some cleaning of the exterior of the hotel and make sure to reserve parking in advance as spaces are limited

Good to be greeted on arrival to valet park the car. Check in was simple we arrived early so room not ready but when we came back all bags in the room. Had an upgrade so got a roll top bath which we didn’t use 😂 Bed is comfortable hotel is warm fresh looking and stylish with good quality furniture. Bar service was very good with knowledgeable bar tenders who were friendly. Not really much atmosphere in there for a Saturday night but I guess people are out on the town although we arrived back about 11.00pm it was fairly quiet in the bar. All staff very helpful and polite. Only criticism is the breakfast. Only one coffee machine so ques for a coffee is not great. Only juice option was Apple which is poor in today’s game. I had a cooked breakfast and quality of bacon was poor and over cooked, sausage was average and beans were luke warm however scrambled eggs were lovely. Others had eggs Benedict and French toast and all said they really enjoyed theirs. Overall yes it’s expensive for a nights stay but a quirky hotel with massive character. Would I go back? Probably not now I’ve been I’d try somewhere else but well worth going if you’ve never been.

Excellent experience with helpful reception and catering staff. Only downside is lack of air conditioning and extractor fan in bathroom. The cell rooms offer a novelty overnight stay. Scaffolding outside did not distract from a pleasurable stay in an historic area in the centre of Oxford.

Was a cool nice building. Unfortunately seems a little dated in the rooms, and not completely clean, plenty of dust and dirty glasses wouldn’t expect that from a ~£200 per night hotel.

Limited parking but we did pay to park at the hotel. Disappointing to find no draft beer, they had ran out. Breakfast was very good. Our room as not very warm, the bathroom was cold. Quirky hotel and nice to experience. Everything was nice a clean.

We really enjoyed our stay at malmaison Oxford. However the hygiene and cleanliness of the room did let it down. We found a false stick on nail in our bed that didn’t belong to us . We also dropped an earring and when finding it , also found that under the bedside table was filthy with old food … an old cherry and some other half eaten mess. This was disappointing as it was our first stay and we expected it to be clean. We also paid extra and stayed in a club room. The room size was great and we had lots of facilities.

The concept is interesting but can’t excuse neglecting updates. For the cost I was surprised by the cheap fixtures and industrial carpeting. Mildew in the shower and dirty room service dishes left in the halls. Definitely not worth the price.

The hotel was very beautiful, but unfortunately our stay was overall a great disappointment. It’s load- you can hear people in the next room and every door slamming, which was constant. The toilet and shower door were not functioning well. Most alarming was asking for clean coffee cups one morning and watching a housekeeper rinse someone else’s cups out with water and no soap and then drying them with the dusting rag used to clean furniture. These were the clean cups I was given to use for the day. It’s unhygienic and an alarming practice.

We were drawn to this hotel because of the obviously very cool and unique setting. The rooms were spacious enough for the price we paid, the bath was a great addition and the shower had good water pressure. Unfortunately we found the bed to be very firm and uncomfortable. My fiance and I both struggled to get to sleep, and woke up with aches and pains. Considering the price point of the room for one night, it was one of the most uncomfortable hotel beds we've experienced. Also even though it was a king size mattress, the mattress actually goes underneath the headboard a way, so if you're tall you may find the bed to be too short. We did mention at checkout how uncomfortable we found the bed and were told that they'd pass the information on, but of course we've no idea if it'll be actioned.

If you want to sleep do not stay here, they share a recycle bank with surrounding bars who dump there bottles in the recycling bins at 01.15, 02.30 & 05.30. This happens every night. Along with this the council waste collection arrives Sat & Sun at 05.30. On arrival at reception they swarm on you in a rush to get your car taken away as no onsite parking. They ask when and what time you want your car over the weekend how are you to know when you have only just arrived. I would never stay there again.

We spent a night in a cell room in the A wing and really enjoyed the unique decor and interesting building, the ambiance in the bar and restaurant, location of the hotel and the complimentary glass of Prosecco on arrival. Minor cons but they didn’t spoil our stay: Shower temperature control was very temperamental, there was an unpleasant drain smell coming from the sink in the morning, and the potato croquettes at breakfast weren’t great. A warning to fellow tall people: The bed head design resulted in our feet hanging over the end of the bed, which was a bit perplexing in a king size bed until we realised why! The bus for the Oxford park and ride stops just 2 minutes from the hotel, which is convenient if you’d rather use the park and ride than the valet parking at the hotel.

This hotel was super fun to stay at. The staff was so willing to help when we had an issue and fixed it right away and with options! I marked everything with high intent, besides the AC. Our room was to have AC but it didn't work, BUT they did move us and gave us fans. Not my ideal, but they tried to make it work for it being an old prison. But I would recommend it from the parking attendant to the staff!

The cell rooms do not have a window that opens , there is no AC. The rooms are hot and stuffy, glad to be home . A basic fan was provided, reception said the issue was being addressed. Although similar reviews go back a long time.

We had a fantastic stay however pulling up to the car park a manager ran out to the car asking if we were staying to which we said yes. ( didn’t even get a chance to turn the engine off ) asked if we’d booked parking which we said no and she then informed us it was £35 valet parking. We were happy to pay this but tone made us feel uncomfortable. We were only staying one night and they had plenty of parking but she said they would be out to park our car elsewhere. We felt like because our car didn’t fit the vibe of all the other high end cars parked out front she judged us immediately. Other than this all other service was 10/10, breakfast lovely, room lovely.

My wife tripped and fractured her ankle on the street. The staff at the Malmaison went beyond the call of duty to accomodate us and get us ice and a wheelchair and really helped us out.

The staff in all departments are very friendly and welcoming, can’t fault it at all. Went for the breakfast included option which was outstanding and again the serving staff was all very friendly and helpful. The only reason it gets four stars from me is because I had to change room on the first night. They checked me into a room below where a function was being held. The staff member dealt with the situation and changed my room, overall this could have been avoided if I was not given the room in the first place knowing a function was being held there.

Myself and my partner booked into the hotel on Sunday afternoon 16th March anx we were greeted at the entrance by a lovely helpful and polite girl who advised they would sort the car out and park it and then told us where we needed to go.we were then greeted at the reception by an amazing man unfortunately i didnt get his name he was so friendly polite and couldn't do enough i advised it was my partners birthday as he asked if we were staying for anything special he then upgraded the room and gave us a voucher for a free cocktail and took our bag to the room as went for a drink First Exceptional service above and beyond thankyou so much.

Central and convenient to dining and shopping and transport. Park and ride to within a few minutes walk to hotel. Train station 10 min walk at tops. Room very comfortable. Plenty of tea/coffee and water

Staff were great for check in and out, and for breakfast. Good breakfast. Room air on didn’t work but a quick call to reception and they immediately sent someone to fix it and when they couldn’t get moved us. No hassle at all.

Location was perfect for myself and the wife. We checked in and parked the car outside the hotel I would recommend paying for the valet parking. A couple of minutes walk and we were in the buzz of the city. Lovely Room, Staff were all fantastic and a Good breakfast 5 stars from us and we will be going back

Pros: Good location, character, service and staff attentive. Cons: Parking not clear at time of booking, and not free. Some rooms are above a Slug and Lettuce pub, so you will get woken up by drunks…why have Malmaison not acquired this section of the place for their bar? It also lowers the overall character of the place having a Slug and Lettuce. The room I was in did not have working air conditioning, so you have to leave balcony doors open, which makes the above problem worse. My room was disabled access room which wasn’t the room I booked (I booked Standard Double Room). Therefore the ‘bathroom’ did not have a bath…and the seat had mould in it (see pictures). Staff did address these problems by moving me to a (smaller) room with air conditioning that worked but this did sour my stay, particularly for the price I paid.

Everything from when we entered to checkout was perfect. The building is unique and landscape is beautiful. Rooms are bigger than the standard European hotels. Service was excellent! Walking distance to everything. One of the best experiences I’ve had this trip. Must stay when in Oxford.

The staff in all departments are very friendly and welcoming, can’t fault it at all. Went for the breakfast included option which was outstanding and again the serving staff was all very friendly and helpful. The only reason it gets four stars from me is because I had to change room on the first night. They checked me into a room below where a function was being held. The staff member dealt with the situation and changed my room, overall this could have been avoided if I was not given the room in the first place knowing a function was being held there.

Room was lovely & bed very comfortable. Service at check-in was great & i got given a prosecco token for 2 for my birthday and barman was lovely. Downside was breakfast with 1 coffee machine that was very slow. When i got to it, it needed emptying so i found someone to help.i then went to chose my coffee & got out of milk message so had to track someone down again. Went up for a second coffee and had to wait as someone waiting for hot chocolate to be replaced. Very limited cold breakfast choice as no plain yoghurt and i was told both mornings by woman serving us don't touch the fruit salad (i have a kiwi allergy). For the price of the stay wouldn't have thought too much trouble to do a fruit portion without? Valet parking used & within less than a 1 minute of leaving car warning came up flat tire. We stopped as soon as we could to find giant screw in front tyre. Haven’t reduced rating on this basis but future residents have a thorough check before you leave.

Good to be greeted on arrival to valet park the car. Check in was simple we arrived early so room not ready but when we came back all bags in the room. Had an upgrade so got a roll top bath which we didn’t use 😂 Bed is comfortable hotel is warm fresh looking and stylish with good quality furniture. Bar service was very good with knowledgeable bar tenders who were friendly. Not really much atmosphere in there for a Saturday night but I guess people are out on the town although we arrived back about 11.00pm it was fairly quiet in the bar. All staff very helpful and polite. Only criticism is the breakfast. Only one coffee machine so ques for a coffee is not great. Only juice option was Apple which is poor in today’s game. I had a cooked breakfast and quality of bacon was poor and over cooked, sausage was average and beans were luke warm however scrambled eggs were lovely. Others had eggs Benedict and French toast and all said they really enjoyed theirs. Overall yes it’s expensive for a nights stay but a quirky hotel with massive character. Would I go back? Probably not now I’ve been I’d try somewhere else but well worth going if you’ve never been.

The staff, overall, were very helpful and polite. Only one reception member seemed less than impressed with our issue regarding the heat of the room. The hidden service charges when charging to the room are steep. To have a meal and get a service charge for that is acceptable, however, for then being charged a separate service charge of £7.50 for drinks during the same meal is an example of the hidden charges not disclosed when booking. The food was not great but this was due to there being no head chef. This would’ve been acceptable if we’d been told in advance. We were only notified that they were “struggling” due to not having a Head Chef during the meal. The potato products were undercooked and overall the food was mediocre. The room was well equipped but very dark with poor lighting. It was also exceptionally hot and the fans did not work due to sockets not working in the room. Two nights cost us £1000, this included parking and breakfast, one meal and some drinks. Oxford is a lovely city, you could get the same for a lot less!

We loved being in one of the original cell rooms, though ours looked in need of some TLC particularly the bathroom and the wardrobe/desk/chair. The bed was very comfy - would have been good to have a lighter duvet for the current climate. The bar area decor is a bit plain - though the member of staff was super helpful and friendly. The corridors/landing areas are obviously very narrow and when the team are cleaning the equipment clutter them. Would be great if they could find a solution to improve the first impression.

Really nice hotel however try not to book a room at the back,we were in 406 really dark and lighting not very good, another downside if you like an ordinary cup of coffee in your room using the kettle they provide coffee bags which didn't taste very nice at all but that was me,other guests may feel differently ,great location 😀
