Surfer Beach Hotel

This hotel was a great central location and literally right on the beach! Close to fun restaurants and shopping. Also bonus is the beach bug transportation that takes you anywhere in pacific beach and free to the trolley station so great if you don’t have a car. Downside is it needs to be updated. The shower never got past warm, didn’t have a microwave or hair dryer in the room but had one in lobby, and the sink never drained properly. Also if you had to park, very limited space.

Excellent location! Great view of the ocean!! Many places to shop and eat near and next to hotel. The boardwalk is excellent for daily walks. The staff are so friendly and kind! Hotel room clean!! Shower was nice and hot!! Heated pool so fun for our kids!! Great place!! Would love to come back!!

Great location but the hotel itself was a bit shabby. We had to change rooms because they gave us the only room without a balcony/patio plus the tub needed repair. The “heated” pool was pretty chilly (I’d guess 70-75 degrees max). The staff were all very pleasant and helpful.

Location of the hotel is fantastic. No resemblance to the posted pictures. Outdated, parking is over $37.5 a day.

Location is great but be prepared to pay $37/day to park. If you don't, you will have to park a couple blocks away. Fitting in the shower could be tough for some too.

Old hotel that has been remodeled but still bare minimums. $240 a nite Motel 6. But, location location location. Poor internet. Basic cable and no movie channels. Not able to use firestick. No golf channel. Tiny shower & water closet. (Toilet room) No kleenex. $34.70 a day to park car. (Used to be free) You stay here for one reason, LOCATION!

Most was okay but parking for guests $37.50 a day is not good park in the street for one like they told me and got a parking ticket for $85.00 that’s not a customer care

Good for the price. $40 parking is extra per night unless you can find free parking elsewhere. DOES NOT TAKE TAP TO PAY. Must have physical card in your name. Great beach access and friendly staff. A little outdated and rusty, but worth it to be right on the beach. Food around the area is extremely overpriced, but there are other options close enough. Nothing fancy.

Overall good stay at a good location. Easy walking. The only downside was that we had to pay for parking. It ended up being an extra $110 to park for 3 nights. If I had known this cost ahead of time, I likely would have chosen a different hotel.

This is our go-to for staying right on Pacific Beach. We love this place! Staff is always friendly and warm, and although it’s not fancy, it has everything we need for a peaceful stay. No microwave in the room, but one in the lobby for our needs. Looking forward to our next stay!

The view was spectacular, the sound of the waves and the fresh ocean air added to the ambiance. Amazing and delicious food choices within walking distance. The room was clean and very comfortable. The staff was also very friendly and welcoming

I generally don’t leave reviews unless I think they will be helpful for others. In this case, I had read other reviews and determined that this would be a great spot for our San Diego vacation. It definitely was not. Pros: The staff is extremely nice and helpful. The beach is a 30-second walk and very fun. Property was quieter than I expected given its location near bars, and the badly-fitting entry & patio doors. Cons: Where do I even start. I paid $250+ night plus $38 “parking” for a room that doesn’t reach Motel 6 quality?! This place is dirty with almost no standard amenities. No closet, no iron/board, no blow dryer, no microwave (there’s one in the lobby). No daily cleaning or replenishment services unless you ask (e.g. towels, coffee, cups). And everything is filthy. The property, the room… I walked across the Pergo floor barefooted just a few times and my feet were black! From the room floor! That is nauseating. (I did not go barefoot outside.) My phone slipped behind the bed so I saw the food chunks accumulating below the bed’s headboard and all along the baseboards. Whole goldfish crackers even, which are evidently attracting bugs. The curtain is broken. The TV is blurry and the smart-hub doesn’t work. The little A/C unit makes so much noise off-and-on that we had to sleep listening to earbuds (the alternative was a stuffy humid room). It was so obnoxious that it honestly impacted our sleep. We checked out and moved to a different hotel, it was that bad.

Loved the ocean view and the restaurant right below where I could get great coffee in the morning. The staff that greeted me were both friendly and helpful. I felt that the floor and carpet were sandy and there was a dirty band aid on the floor when I came into the room. But the bed was clean and very very comfy..

Rooms need to be updated. Simple cleaning like bathroom exhaust, mildew areas in bath.

The staff were kind and held my bags until check-in. The room was dirty. The floors felt grimy and like they needed carpet shampooing. There was coffee on the walls near the bathroom. The bathroom floor wasn’t clean, nor was the shower. I dropped my earring backing on the floor and when I went to look for it, found things on the floor that didn’t come from me

Dirty, nasty, would never stay again. The only good thing about this hotel is the location and the restaurant next-door. It was filthy and I didn't even want to get into the bed. And it's expensive too, not like an economy hotel. Too bad because the location is amazing.

Good location, right on the beach. But this hotel is very old and not kept up. Stained carpet, dent in the wall, no pictures or anything hung in the room, felt more like a motel. Disappointed!

The staff is very friendly and helpful. The hotel itself is very ick. The rooms are old which is fine but they are so dirty. The floors are so disgusting we refuse to walk barefoot. The sheets look like they have been around since opening. The pillows are so flat and used that you have to use 2 pillows to get the comfort of 1. The mattresses slide off the wood slab they are on. It’s a non smoking hotel but we had to keep our patio door closed because so many people were on their patios smoking it was overwhelming and horrible for our kids. The only bonus is having an entry right to the beach. You get what you pay for. This was our 3rd time here and it just keeps getting worse and worse. This hotel is fine if you’re not really using the room except to sleep or want a cheap place to stay.

Property is a bit dated, but can’t beat the price and location. Beds were comfortable.

First pleasant surprise : location, location, location! Surfer Beach Hotel was literally embedded in the restaurants and shopping of Pacific Beach. We were steps away from the boardwalk and waterfront without suffering excessive noise. Second pleasant surprise: we were upgraded to an ocean-view room, and early check-in without needing to ask. The room was a little dated, but very clean. Staff was super friendly and always available. Would definitely stay here again for a casual weekend getaway!

We have stayed at this property over 5 times and we will never stay again. We were on the bottom floor this time which wasn’t a big deal until we got into the room. The room was so run down, the ac unit had a tube coming out of the wall that did not cool the room down at all, it beeped 6 times every 20 mins, and the TV has 20 channels and only 3 worked. For the amount of money per night they charge for this property there needs to be changes. Very very disappointed, unfortunately this will be the last time we stay at the Surfer Beach Hotel.

Old school type of beach hotel. Great location. Needs renovation, but mostly adequate. 2 issues to note is that a fan on the roof of a nearby restaurant was squeaking for two days, which required us to keep our balcony door shut to keep the noise down and the next evening I got stuck in their 1 and only elevator for about 20-30 minutes and had to call maintenance to get me out. They were apologetic, but the elevator was inoperable that night and the following day.

I picked this place because it had decent reviews and well priced. I will say being right off the beach was nice. Being close to the bars could be appealing to the right person. But the rooms are small! I am 5 foot 3 inches and I was taller then the shower heads. The beds and pillows were terrible. The carpet was moist and very dated. This place definitely needs a update. The rooms have window AC and you have to stand on the bed to control it. We made our stay work but I probably will not stay again or recommend it. The staff were very friendly and very helpful and the restaurant was very good. So not the worst place just not the best either.

This hotel definitely needs some renovations. If you just sleep at night, leave early in the morning, then return at night to sleep…it’s okay. The AC unit is extremely loud and will quit working at all hours of the night. The one extremely positive thing about the room I had was the Ocean View, amazing!

We always stay at this hotel when we come to San Diego and have never had any issues, this time was much different. I paid for a King Ocean View Room and what I got was a partial view of the ocean and the rooftop of a restaurant and the pool. I expressed my concerns to the staff and was told they were booked and there were no Ocean Views available. I was told they would talk to management to see what could be done and also told that when I book I should be specific and add DIRECT Ocean View to make sure that is what I get?? Never had to do that before and shouldn’t need to, we all know what Ocean View means. I had a partial view. Staff did call me to tell me they would deduct $30/night but that’s all that could be done. Then our power kept going out in our room and we were only using a steamer and curling iron?? This kept happening at least 3 more times within minutes of each time they would fix it. Also the water from the shower was either too hot or too cold, it was hard to get it to a warm temp. The dresser drawers had hair in them and there were pills that were dropped behind the dresser that weren’t ours. Not sure we will stay here again, there was too many things wrong.

Good little beach hotel, not the nicest accommodations by any means. Shower was really small and not the most updated but it was clean.

WE arrived earlier than check in but HUNTER was very accommodating and upgraded us to a room with a better view, then called us when it ready for us to get the key. He was always smiling and gracious - asking if everything was ok. He's a great host and did everything he said he would!

Great location and price. Rooms are clean and the view from ours was lovely. Lobby is kinda grubby and the staff attitude was inconsistent (one was very nice, two others acted like we were an annoying inconvenience) but it didnt sour our trip. We will definately come back.

Clerk Aden was very nice. Others that brought towels, pillows and checked me out also. Mercedes was rude and did not have any customer service skills while talking to me, didn’t even look at me when she asked me what I needed. The lights were off in stairway the first night we arrived and I slipped on a step. Room carpets were very gross I did not want to take my shoes off the whole time I was there, I do not believe the beds were a queen, seemed more like a full. The pull out couch bed was unacceptable, looked to be VERY old. The springs that you could feel when you laid down were almost unbearable and mattress was dirty. So hard to pull out and put back in. Only my husband could do it The pillows hardly had anything in them, that’s why I had to call for more. Parking spots are a joke, can hardly get in and out of the car without hitting the car next to you. My family members also booked a room and it had no air, it was broken! The pictures looked ok online, better then in person. I know they can not control the environment surrounding the area but there was drunk people laying on the sidewalk and we went out to the beach at night right in front of the hotel with children some young, and people came within about 15 feet from us and started having intercourse! There went our family night out looking for shells. I wish I would have booked somewhere else, can’t believe I spent over 2,000 ( including parking) on this place. Extremely disappointed and at some point disgusted.

I stayed with my teenage son for one week and I found what I expected reading the reviews and seeing the pictures. Staff very friendly and attentive, we loved the location, the vibe of the area, the short distance to many others places to visit (easy reachable even with bus) and the people!

Very convenient for beach time and walking around for eats and treats. Staff was super helpful and kind. Swift service when I texted their personal text assistant. Perfect family getaway and we can't wait to return.

It is located on the beach with an amazing view. We loved falling asleep to the sound of the ocean each night.

The best location , you are right on the beach ! Loved watching the sunset . You are next to amazing restaurant downstairs , shops and bars .

Hotel itself was fine. A place to lay your head. This hotel’s appeal is all about the location. It’s right on the beach, with great little restaurants right outside your door.

This property is all about LOCATION. The hotel, (perhaps more motel) itself is “tired” and worn, but the accessibility to the ocean, pubs, restaurants etc are fantastic and the views and people watching extraordinary. The staff were friendly and helpful.

I was looking for something near the beach (check), walkable to food & shops (check), with a nice pool (check), affordable (check), & not too far from the Naval base where my son could drive over every night after he got off work (check). The hotel met every one of my qualifications, and then some. The staff was so nice and went above and beyond to serve. I would love to stay there again when I go back to San Diego. **The hotel is older, so please know that going in.** HOWEVER, you trade that out for location, location, location, friendly staff, and comfort.

Property had a nice ocean view and was steps from the beach. There was lots of “party noise” from surrounding businesses until late night/early morning. Close to bus stops which made getting around town convenient.

The hotel is old and badly in need renovation front desk and lobby look like a hostel dirty and worn out hallways my first room smelled so bad of mold l couldn't sleep the shower had soap scum on floor and walls scared l was going to slip also everyday smells from the restaurant fill your room l paid .nearly $3,000 for 10 days the only good thing I can say is the front desk people are really nice it's a shame they don't have a good hotel to working

Love the room we had. Full view of the ocean. Even though the restaurants open late, the sound of the waves blocked out the noise. The screen door needed some work, but that was about it. The staff is super friendly and helpful. We will stay there again soon

Location is a 10+. Adjacent to boardwalk and beach. World Famous restaurant was very good. Room for imply: peeling paint on shower ceiling, shower could have been cleaner and the AC filter was dirty. I would still recommend this rental property.

Great location for the price! My ocean room view was amazing - left my slider door open all night to listen to the waves! Walk next door to Woodys for great breakfast, etc! Walk a few minutes more to beach bar for drinks & fish tacos!

Great location. Loved the restaurant right outside - Woody's: great food, coffee. Typical older beach motel, so not the cleanest, but when the sandy beach is steps away it's understandable.

The reason we chose this hotel is convenience. It is right on the beach and walking distance to a lot of good food and shop options. But, the cleanliness and how poor shape this was in was bad. For almost $300 a night, I should have walked an extra two blocks to have decent stay. The doors hardly open half the time, if you open your balcony door to see the ocean, you get a whiff of the grease pit that is on top of the connected restaurant, and it’s just got gross vibes, the furniture looked so bad, like the stuff your grandparents take to good will and it just sits there for years in a humid climate. it didn’t open well, and the carpet:, barf. I get that you have to clean a LOT of sand when you are right off the beach, but some upgrades will go a long way in making guests feel comfortable. I didn’t even take a photo of the room, and I wish I had. The paint peeling, the filthy light switches, and doors, the dilapidated furniture. I took Clorox wipes to everything and seeing the result of that, it just added to my growing uneasiness. Again, the convenience was great, and if that is all you are looking for then you will be fine here.

The location is incredible. It is steps away from the sand. It’s attached to a great restaurant with numerous other options within walking distance. It was great. Kids loved it. Super secure and safe. The staff was incredibly helpful and accommodating to all of our needs including a late check out and storing our bags for a later flight.

Great staff - especially Lillian at the front desk. The room is clean and spacious with a deck overlooking the ocean. Lots of places to eat very close to the hotel.
