Gold Star Inn & Suites

The Gold Star Inn and Suites should not be open for customers .The walls are filthy, linens are stained and ripped, the carpet smells of mold and is damp. The toilet paper holder had been ripped out of the wall and had several types of putty along with dark smears that looked like feces. There was a blood stain on our mattress, no mattress cover, just 2 loose dirty sheets covering it. I asked for assistance with the vending machine for water ( tap water is yellow)and was told that they don't service the machines. Our window was open and we were unable to close it because the hinge was broken. I observed a woman walking up and down the hallway with her eyes rolling back in her head, not sure what kind of drugs but it was unnerving. I slept on top of the bed in a hoodie and sweatpants, hoping to avoid bed bugs. The toilet was backing up after flushing and smelled of sewage. On Monday I am making a formal complaint to the Health Inspector office in Groton, they shouldn't be open to the public, the building isn't safe and is in need of sterilizing.

Absolutely disgusting. The furniture was so gross that we would not even sit in it, or put our bags down on it. People were sketchy outside late at night. Nip bottles everywhere on the ground. Cigarette butts right next to my car that were not there late the night before. Lights were flickering off and on. Bugs were in the drain in the shower. The front desk was so wide that I couldn’t reach to get the key, and couldn’t hear what the lady was saying. No upkeep whatsoever. DO NOT STAY HERE!

The ceiling above our bed leaked for both nights of our stay, ceiling yellow water damaged, carpet wet must have mold. No one ever attending the desk to report to, very disappointed and unhappy supposed to be a romantic get away…

It took 3 doorbell rings to bring someone to the check-in desk. The outside white painted areas needed help. The sidewalk into the inn was dangerous with the cement craked very wide in places.

If you are looking for a run down place to stay this is it. The shower had very low pressure and looked like the pipe was going to fall out of the wall. There is only heat in the bedroom not the living room. The front of the kitchen cabinet fell off while we were sitting across the room.

Parking was good right by lobby door.

The check-in was good. We had a hard time getting the room key to work. I think its time to upgrade the locks. The AC unit was falling off the wall, the shower curtain was moldy, that's disgusting! The place needs an upgrade. I understand if you don't want to do breakfast but maybe just some coffee would be nice. Won't be stayong again.

The elevator smelled like cigarette smoke. The manager called me to ask what I was cooking in the room, it was causing an odor, I explained I was 12 miles away in Norwich, I was not in the room

Overall condition of property is poor. Hallway was very hot, could not cool off room and no coffee in room or in lobby. Had to wait a long time before staff arrived to check me in and I was the only one waiting. Not a good value for your $.

Was a little nervous when I booked due to mixed reviews but overall was very pleased. Traveled with family. Rooms were very big compared to other hotels, furniture was comfy, rooms and bathrooms were stocked and clean. AC worked great, shower had great pressure and got nice and hot. The hotel interior itself could benefit from a couple cosmetic repairs but did not effect stay at all. Staff was extremely friendly and polite. Great location. Honestly nothing bad to say. Will definitely stay again.

Room was nice large. Property in poor condition. Paint coming off walls. Ceiling tiles water stained. Holes in sheets. Towels were washed but stained. No coffee. Could be a really nice place again with a little work.

The rooms are dirty. They wreak of cigarettes. Sheets are dirty and full of holes. No bath towels available. Never stay again and will not recommend to anyone.

For $80-something for a night, there were stains from either blood or feces on my sheets, one of the pillows, towels, and some spots on the walls around the suite. There was a hole punched through the bedroom door and you can see other spots had heen filled from the same. I let the front desk know about it and showed them pictures. I was expecting cleanliness but that is not what I received on this visit. Everyone was nice, but I don't think I'll be booking here again any time soon.

Very dirty. Cieling tiles in bathroom needs to be replaced. Lots of mold.

The place was completely outdated and extremely dirty. The wallpaper was peeling off the walls. There was an awful smell in our room. We couldn’t even sleep in the bed because the bedding was so gross. We had to stay on the couches in the living room part of the area.

The hotel lobby and floor seemed clean. There was hair in the bathtub and on the wall of the tub. Seriously a simple rinse would have taken care of that. The sink tap was loose. There is no excuse for either. The worse was that it was a non smoking room but the bed, the blanket and cover smelled. Clearly not laundered.

Room was clean of clutter but had unpleasant smell. We asked for nonsmoking & all you could smell was cigarette & mj smoke. The room had 2 fridges? 1 didn’t work I did. Lights worked randomly. Paint on the door & walls looked like it was covering up stains not a normal paint job. Door handles & light switched were dirty appearing. Ceiling had a hole from a water leak, bathroom sink was broken/cracked & glued back together. When we turned the bed sheets down there was a long black hair on the pillow. Staff when they appeared at front counter were pleasant but not any effort at all to interact or ask if anyone had any needs or concerns. A/C worked great! Nice & cool but woke up very stuffy & congested. ? Mold.

My room was clean, my bed comfy, and the staff friendly. This hotel is tucked away in a quiet spot off the highway. I slept well and enjoyed my visit with friends in Stonington.

Friendly, quick check in. Problem with room key, faulty key swipe on door. Got assistance. No a/c or TV in main area. Cold a/c in bedroom. Bloodstains on carpet by bathroom.

I liked the suite with the jacuzzi and it was very roomy! I would recommend a bit of updating! We did have a pleasant stay with no issues! It isn’t a 5 star hotel but it’s worth it for a night of fun at the casino! My family always comes back to this motel when heading to the casino. Only motel in area for decent money with a jacuzzi!

The room was very large and bed was comfortable. Great value for the price we paid (had a couch, kitchenette) but the room was very, very old and needed a lot of TLC. Ceiling looked like water damage, holes in walls, carpet worn. We are not super fussy, as long as it doesn't smell and bed is comfortable. Needed a coffee maker & TV by couch to make it better - or at least coffee in lobby.

The suite was clean, comfortable, and reasonably appointed. The only odd thing was there was a combo AC/Heat unit in the bedroom, but no form of conditioning for the rest of the suite.

It was a good room. The only problem was not enough tv stations

This was one of the worst maintained facilities we have stayed at. Door latch was broken, and desk, walls and doors were pretty beat up. The room was a good size and bed and couch were comfortable, but stove top did not look safe and old minifridge was still there even though new one was in the room.

The rooms are set up oddly with wasted space in the living room. A painting was missing from the wall and there was no tv in the main area, only the bedroom. There was a kitchenette with an ancient microwave and a questionable hot plate. T There is no table. The tv in the bedroom was old with no hdmi ports. The fan in the bathroom was very loud and the shower had pretty bad water pressure and made a strange loud noise when on. Plus, the shower head looked like it could separate from the wall at any moment. We also had a random hole in the wall that likes looked either like a bullet hole or hole for someone trapped in the wall to breathe or look through. Glad we only stayed 1 night. Doubt we'll be back.

They say you get what you pay for, and this is a prime example. They have one of the lowest prices for rooms in the area. And, while the outside of the building isn't much to look at, the rooms were actually quite spacious. The main issue we had: paper thin walls. We could hear EVERYTHING in the room next to us, and they were just having a normal conversation. Our room was clean, but very outdated. A great place to save some $$$, but good luck on getting a good night's sleep.

Free wi-fi was almost non-existent - couldn’t log in to internet. Room was clean. Staff pleasant.

A little bit older, but honestly for the price and convenient location, I was pleasantly surprised. Especially since it was a suite with a kitchenette, separate bedroom, pull out couch, two TV's and two closets. Its really close to the interstate and the navy base. Highly recommend.

Location was great, close to everything we needed. Hotel conditions were not so great, place needs lots of small repairs, bedroom lights were not working, and room did not offer basics such as an iron and hair conditioner. Service was not the best as attendant had difficulty understanding clients.

Girl at the desk is very nice. I’ve stayed here 3 times everything was clean except this time the room didn’t look like it was even cleaned. I would definitely still stay here again. The place is old and definitely needs to be updated, but the important thing is there are no roaches or bedbugs. Stay away from RedRoof and Clarion in New London..

Initially we were happy to stay, but we had an unanticipated bank emergency come up. We had a relative send us money to pay for the rest of our stay but it was delayed by a bank error. Rather than listen to my explanation the on duty manager yelled at me to get out and pack our belongings. Then she proceeded to call the room every 5 minutes demanding that I leave before my belongings were packed.

Got there at 2am, granted its late. Walk in,office attendee was sound asleep. Gave him my id and signed a paper. Got keys for one room. Keys didnt work asked for new keys and he gave us a new room. Go to use the same keycard he gave us and this new room doesnt work. Then escorts us up to the new room to manually reset the keys as hes banging and pulling the door mind you 230am at this point. A man opens the door. They tried to give us a room that someone already had! Woke him up and i was completely embarrassed. The man was asking what was going on. Attendees never answered, as the two attendees talk in another language, i tell the man they want to give us his room. Then we go downstairs to get new keys but at this point seems to be 3 family members talking in a different language as im trying to get a refund. They Say i have to go through expedia nothing they can do. I asked for my signed copy back, refused to give it back. so it looks like i signed into a room but never got a room these people have stolen my money and my time. Was forced to drive 2 and half hrs home at 230 in the morning

It was convenient, clean, and reasonable. The only negative would be housekeeping came the 1st day only, would have liked clean towels each day.

The staff is friendly and helpful.

Check in was weird. Wide and tall counter which is not convenient for short people. I had to stand on my tippy toes to grab what was given to me. When I checked in, I could only see the persons forehead as she was sitting in a low chair. For the price, it’s not bad. Hallways smelled of cigarettes but the room did not.

I booked two rooms, called to verify they were adjoining, was told they were - they were not. The man at check in seemed to no idea what he was doing at all. Only one of the key cards for our second room worked but apparently no one can reprogram them except the manager who was there. The walls are paper thin so we got to listen to a child yell, cry, and scream for our entire stay - my husband almost called the police to report possible abuse it was so bad - the only reason we didn't was because we didn't know if perhaps the child just had severe special needs and couldn't help it. The microwave was from the 1970s and the writing on the lower disk was completely rubbed off and it got painfully hot on the bottom when you used it. The tvs in both rooms were so old that you couldn't even connect Xbox or computers to them and they only got analog channels. The light switch closest to the door does nothing. One room has no secondary lock. Both bathrooms had broken door knobs. Honestly, I could go on but I'll just say to choose a different accommodation if you can, particularly because you do anything in the room - even while waiting TWO HOURS for the manager to show up then they will refuse to give you a different room regardless of reason.

Such a convenient and pretty location. The staff was welcoming and efficient, and available.

Gas, food and liquor store close by. Fridge and microwave are the bonus!!!!!

We stayed here for 4 days. Very comfortable nice location everything we wanted to see was 10 minutes away. The place is a bit old but it was fine for the cost. Would i stay here again yes

Hidden gem! Affordable on the weekend. About 20 mins from the casino. Clean. Microwave! No issues.

Close to tourist points, Casinos, Mystic Seaport

Quiet, relaxed location with an easy drive to downtown Mystic. Great place to sleep when in the area at a much better price than surrounding hotels.

We had an excellent stay! The room was very clean and really spacious. We loved the little kitchen area with mini fridge and microwave. The counter space was nice and the stools at the breakfast bar were really convenient for eating in if you wanted. The beds were comfortable and plenty of hot water for showering. Great location and parking. We had two shows at Mohegan Sun Arena, visited Mystic Aquarium and Waterford Beach. All were within 15 to 20 minutes away. Would definitely stay again. Great value for the price.

One thing should be said. There is no coffee in the morning. Everything else was great but not having coffee for guests is a big fail. How much would it cost to have a pot of coffee in the lobby ?

The suite was very spacious and very comfortable. There is no coffee in the rooms and at Gold Star Inn & Suites.

Quiet, bed comfortable. However no amenities. Even vending machine was sold out of water. Direct TV signal very poor, kept freezing. Mostly clean except for mildew on bathroom shower curtain. Old , not well maintained, peeling paint, frayed rugs.

The space is large and clean. That staff was helpful. I'm sorry to say that the most noteworthy quality about this hotel is that there's an odor. The property has seen better days. Perhaps it's in the process of a rehab? Also, there is no coffee anywhere in the building or within several miles of the hotel.

Definitely a good value for your money. Would love it if at least a continental breakfast was offered.

Nice size room with a separate couch for TV watching and desk for those in need. It was a "no frills" motel with no breakfast being included. The room was a bit dated, but clean with no cigarette smell in the air (it was a no smoking room). We recommend adding a bath mat and bar to the bath/shower to make it safer to take a shower. We also recommend adding a TV guide to each room to assist with navigating the various available channels.
