The George Street Hotel

I had high hopes for this "5 star" hotel , but sadly it didn't make the grade and despite my previous emails asking for an early check in (at 12 noon), I arrived from a long train journey, to find I was not able to get ready, adequately for the wedding I was attending at 1.30pm, because no rooms (41 in all and the hotel appeared quiet?!) were ready. Staff were polite and friendly and offered me the use of a small washroom next to reception, but others were knocking on the door and I was unable to wash, dry nor style my hair in there due to no plug socket or hairdrier etc. For me this spoiled my day a little as I wasn't expecting not to be able to get ready properly for this very special occassion. I finally accessed my room at about 8.30pm and went out again for the evening do, returning at about 11.15pm. I was unable to access my room, as my key card was ineffective, so had to go down to reception and ask for assistance. The man there had a master key which he used to open my door, but I felt a little vulnerable as a lone female and again, not as expected. Bed was comfy but one pillow smelled of a manly cigarette smell and very off putting! For the price I paid for the room the hotel was very disappointing with no bar, restaurant or breakfast. Complimentary items were very basic-2 biscuits, some teabags and 2 small cans of water-again not what I would expect from a 5 star establishment and very disappointing. Sadly, I would not go there again for the price paid.

This is a hidden gem. The entrance is just a door on the street that opens onto a hall with an elevator at the end. The lobby is on the next floor, and is pretty simple, but the staff was uniformly friendly. But then you get to the rooms. They are large by European standards, fully up to date, nicely furnished, and very comfortable. The building is about 200+ years old, but it was fully renovated a few years ago. The hotel is in the middle of the center city and just a few minutes walk to just about everything. Highly recommended.

So well positioned for the New Theatre, room small and dated but everything worked, the air con was quiet and street noise was close to zero. Excellent bed and shower. A great stay for an overnight, not though a hotel base for much longer

Basement room, no windows.

I was in Oxford for one night for a college event and wanted to stay in the centre of town. The hotel was very convenient and within walking distance of most things. That said, for that price, the amenities were somewhat lacking, e.g. I’d expect to have a small coffee machine. Also, on a Saturday night, that part of town can be quite noisy after midnight
