The Sofia Hotel

It was a beautiful hotel, a little older, so there were a few small issues, but nothing that wouldn't make me stay there again. The restaurant attached was great and the room was convenient

We had an amazing stay at The Sofia Hotel. We would recommend this property to anyone looking to stay near all the attractions in San Diego. Check in was quick and they even offer fresh flavored ice water at check in. We stayed on the 7th floor and loved the comfortable room with everything we needed to feel like royalty. My favorite touch was the make up towel and the filtered water dispenser. The towels were large enough to wrap a fuller body and the body wash and shampoo was a perfect choice for anyone. Would highly recommend a stay at The Sofia.

OK...The folks we spoke to on the phone to request early check in were great. Friendly and helpful. The staff at the front desk when were checking in - not so much. There were 2 people behind the counter when we got there and neither one of them greeted us. The man who helped us was not very welcoming and when we asked him where to park - which BTW they never mentioned - and told where we did park temporarily - he looked outraged. Not a great start. That being said - the hotel is cool looking and was very nice. Decorated beautifully. Clean room which is the most important thing. My main complaint is with the city too. The room was pre-paid before we got there. Checking out I was told we had a $70.+ charge. I knew $46.00 was for self parking - annoying but expected. The extra $30+? An almost $18.00 'amenities fee' What??? Are you charging me extra for soap? towels? Sheets? Come on. Then SD charges all kinds of taxes - a historic district tax. Please SD. You make me not want to come back. Which honestly for me was pretty much always the case.

We got to enjoy one of the recent renovated rooms which was absolutely perfect. I will stay there every time I visit San Diego

Quite a notable stay! I originally booked a corner room at The Sofia as a “just in case” option, but did not see that the stay was nonrefundable. I tried all kinds of ways to appeal and get out of it, but they wouldn’t even let me sell the stay to someone else. This really isn’t the reason for my rating, but it did set the tone. The hotel staff were not very friendly in general, and sort of just did the minimum. I get the strong impression that someone bought an aging hotel and was struggling to get it up to speed. Most of the hotel is decorated in a dark gothic style, but I was pleasantly surprised to find that the entire 7th floor was remodeled in modern light colors, and our room was mostly shades of white (which did not match its pictures on the website, which still displayed the old dark style). The outer walls still have the old windows, but the room had nice quartz countertops and modern bathroom hardware. Annoyingly, the shower head did not swivel much, and not enough to get into a convenient position - it shot too high, mostly at our heads. The room was otherwise nice and quiet and pretty comfortable. There was a hydration station on our floor, which was nice. On the afternoon of the second day of our stay we ran out of hot water. I didn’t think to contact the front desk until later in the evening, and they said they were having problems all over the hotel, but would be fixed in “a few hours”. We both ended up taking cold showers as it wasn’t fixed until the next m
