Britannia Hotel Birmingham New Street Station Birmingham

Had an executive room on 9th floor. Bed was never made. Tea/Coffee/Milk was never renewed. Windows was filthy. Only one lift was working so had to wait ages to go up or down.

No parking and the elevator reeeeeeeally slow but city centre…

Decent place overall - clean rooms, nice modern shower room, user-adjustable heating (not usually found in cheaper hotels) and a nice big tv! The only let down is the one working lift; the lift seems to stop at various floors in random order regardless of who has pressed the button and when. There was a point where the lift had stopped at every other floor 12 or 13 times before it reached ground floor and it shakes so much that it’s really quite unpleasant. This is probably less of a problem if you’re not on the 6th floor as there are a LOT of stairs - point being I wouldn’t stay again if my mobility was any worse

Arrived early and was allowed to check in, hotel is in refurb, so only one lift active and room was on 9th floor, room was cery nice and bathrrom clean and good, but room was very hot and air con was broken, reported this and hoped it would get fixed while i was out. Returned later and room was even warmer, reported back to reception and they changed our room for us, good customer service, but lift was a pain as had to go up, get bags, return, get new key, use lift again just to drop off. New room was also clean and tidy, 7th floor overlooking new street. Sleep was good, shower and facilities were good, just wish more water pressure. Shame bar and reataurant seemed closed when we were there so didnt manage to try those out. Well priced for centre of brum, would stay there again if needed.

There was a huge TV on the wall too. But the beds weren’t very comfy. I barely trusted the door to stay closed. It’s not in a bad place though, there’s nothing spectacular about the hotel but if you just need a place to sleep, it’ll do.

This was my first stay at this hotel and these are my observations/experiences PROs: Location The hotel is very centrally located—great for city access, shopping, dining, and events. If you’re in Birmingham for a night out or a business meeting, this location is very convenient. Ventilation & Comfort I spent most of my stay in the accessibility room which had no windows, disorienting and poorly ventilated—especially difficult for long stays or guests with health concerns. Also, it was not fully accessible as there was no walk-in shower, just a bathtub which means guests with mobility challenges suffered further challenges when needing a shower. Inconsistent Staff Communication Different staff members gave conflicting answers, and despite notes in the guest file, basic service expectations were not followed through.

Restaurant and bar closed but no for warning. No mirror in the bedroom so hard to use iPad camera to view blow drying hair. Room not serviced in 3 days I stayed. Room noisy.

The hotel is extremely dated and in serious need of modernisation. Much of the building feels run down, and several facilities the lifts were out of order during my stay. Directional signage is poor, making it difficult to navigate the hotel. Overall, the price does not match the condition of the rooms or the experience, especially when compared with other hotels in the area.

The room was nice, but there was no hot water to shower with; which was quite disappointing especially when you need to shower. One of the wall sockets beside the desk was loose, it needs attending to; the shower room door handles were loose which also needs attending to. Britannia Hotel Birmingham’s bar and restaurant had been shut which prevented me from buying fruit juices and coffees, which was quite disappointing for such a well known and highly respected hotel group. I feel my review is fair, given what I paid for the hotel room; I had fond memories of my previous visits in the past, I hope that Britannia Hotels can reopen the bar and restaurants as the families who came to stay were forced to go elsewhere for their meals. I hear the families complain about the closed facilities, that it was costing more to go out for drinks and meals.

Fire alarm! In the middle of the night, a fire alarm suddenly went off and startled me out of bed. This was extremely inconvenient and it was not the first time I experienced this in a Britannia Hotel. They urgently need to change their safety concept. It's simply unacceptable that the entire hotel is woken up just because someone falsely pushed the alarm button or someone took a shower. If a smoke detector detects smoke, first of all the receptionist should be alarmed, the receptionist should check the situation and in case of a true emergency the receptionist should trigger a general alarm.

Very run down hotel and rooms, room was dirty! Hairs in shower and bathroom floor wee stains in the floor the carpet looked like it had never been hoovered hairs and dust everywhere and the bedding looked like it had been used previously!! But i ddint notice this till the morning i woke up!!!!

From the outside it could well be Beirut but surprisingly clean room and the bed was comfortable. The bathroom was a nightmare. An old type bath tub, no handles to get step in or out and tap water mixers to get the right water temperature. Cheap awful watered down liquid soap.

First we were put in a room that hadn’t been vacated so walked in on a couple who were still using the room. Then we were allocated a room that was clearly freshened up but not cleaned- hair in and on the bed, toilet and sink had hairs still on it clearly not enough time was spent cleaning properly. Granted the room looked clean but wasn’t as thorough as expected.

Needed a hotel for one night which was close to the railway station, as catching an early flight. Good location, great value and the room on the 5th floor was clean and comfortable.

Desperately needs work, the corridors and stairwells are filthy, my shower was blocked, no mug or spoon to make a drink, I had to ask. The place is in desperate need of a face lift. One night was enough. Some work is going on but the place is dated and it feels like it.

Dirty towels had been left in the shower. The fabric of the hotel was worn and grubby. I ordered a double room as I wanted a large bed, but was given two singles next to each other. The area around the hotel had lots of homeless people sleeping on the street, and there was a smell of weed in the vicinity of the hotel. At night, I was kept awake by the raised voices of people arguing in the street. I will not be staying in this unpleasant hotel again.

Awful hotel, not clean in the slightest! No soaps, shampoo/conditioner in the dispensers. No windows in any of our rooms. Only 1 lift working (barely by the sounds of it) the rooms have a horrible smell, sheets were dirty and when I complained to staff they told me they would “put it forward” for me but I won’t hold my breath. I’ve stayed at some bad hotels but I will NEVER come back to this one! The only thing it has going for it is that it’s central to the bullring

The check in is 24/7 and really convenient, but the room was quite dirty - toilet not fully cleaned, hair in bathroom and marks on carpet, walls and side table.

We read other reviews before booking so knew what to expect. The reviews were accurate. The hotel is tired and old fashioned. Positives, the location is great, 5 minute walk from New Street train station, and in the heart of all the shops and currently Christmas markets. We were on the sixth floor and had no noise from the streets. The shower was hot and I found the bed firm and comfy. The negatives: super thin walls. We could hear word for word the tv in the room behind us, and even some conversations. No double glazing, but the room temperature could be controlled by a radiator. The whole hotel needs a make over basically, but it's so large would cost a fortune. The bar was not open on the Saturday night we stayed there. Would I stay here again, unlikely. However for one night if it's cheaper than elsewhere I possibly would knowing what to expect.

With this hotel, you are really getting what you pay for - it's a very reasonable price to be right next door to New Street and the station, and that is clearly the reason many folks would use it. However, it is very basic. There is no bathmat, no soap or shower gel/shampoo provided. Also the bed mattress is very cheap (can feel each and every coil spring!) and the pillow about as thin as a towel. But, again, this is a value place and ultimately it's all about the location.

The room allocated was very small for a double room with no window or air conditioning in either the bedroom or the bath room. leading to a very uncomfortable night. Room was reasonably clean and the toilet and bathroom were in very good condition. Would not use this hotel again.

The only thing going for this hotel was location. Bed was lumpy and springs poking out into your back all night, zero sleep, hotel was dirty no towels in room and overall a very unloved and run down hotel.

Good central location. Maybe not the safest place late at night to walk around. My room was large enough but stayed on very hot night and the AC didn’t work and my room didn’t have any windows at all so my room touched 30C and was unpleasant to sleep in

Very central location, with easy access to major transportation options. I got a renovated room, so can't really complain about that. However, with a 'view' to windows of other rooms just a few metres away. On the inside so no outside noise, however the walls are absolutely paper thin.

the hotel is very central especially if you are travelling by train. i stayed in room 233, there was no window! 4 solid brick walls, no fresh air or natural light. No Airconditioning just an old-fashioned fan, i think if you are going to sell a room without a window you should advise the guest as it is a natural expectation! just as you expect a bed and a bathroom.

I was pleasantly surprised when I arrived in my room to find that it had been extensively renovated since I last stayed here. Everything in the bathroom was brand new and there was a wide screen tv and new lighting. It was only an overnight stay but I would now stay again.

Hotel was reasonably priced, the staff were helpful and efficient. The beds were comfortable, and the coffee making facilities were good, although it would have been nice to have some de-caffeinated coffee. The only problem was that the plug hole in the shower needed clearing out. We could only run the shower for a couple of minutes before we had to turn it off, otherwise the shower tray would have overflowed. I couldn’t risk washing my hair in it, so had to go out to buy some dry shampoo. We were able to leave our bags at reception after we checked out, which was very helpful.

Checking in was a nightmare because I was given access to someone else’s room who wasn’t present but had left their stuff in the room. So that makes security a little bit of an issue here. If I wanted to of taken something I easily could have but I returned to the desk to be given a new room immediately. Once this was rectified the room I was given was ok and was in good shape. However also at 12:45am the fire alarms all went off due to someone smoking in one of the rooms. Luckily this was sorted quite quickly but it certainly gave me a freight.

The staff are very kind.

When we realized we didn’t have heat in our room we went to the front desk to notify them twice over our three day stay and we were never able to get get the issue resolved.

Room was clean walking distance from New Street was minutes away just off on a side alley but super easy to find Staff super helpful allowing me to check in early so i could quickly drop a bag off before heading ontoba further journey

The location is excellent, right off new street and close to the station and bull rink

Hotel was ok. Soulless but functional. Area was noisy, and threatening. Hotel entrance off a smelly, dirty alley. Did not feel safe. Staff barely spoke. One lift out of order so long waits at busy times. Booked 2 nights left after one.

The hotel is in a super-convenient city centre location. Take the Stephenson Street exit from the station and you'll come onto New Street almost opposite the hotel. The room was clean and the bed was comfortable. Only basic toiletries and refreshments (no biscuits on the tea tray – remember to toss a pack of chocolate digestives in your bag) but overall good value for the price. One thing to note is that the revolving door at the entrance is very heavy and takes some muscle to start moving. I literally had to put my shoulder to it. Could cause difficulty for anyone with physical weakness or disability. The staff on reception were polite. Check-out is simply dropping your key in a box, quick and easy. So overall, a good option for a convenient and economical city stay.

The hotel is in the heart of the pedestrian shopping centre, minutes from the Bull Ring. The canal, Chinese Quarter and Jewellery Quarter are within walking distance.

Hotel was perfectly situated for shopping and this time of year the Christmas market was on the street outside and wasnt too noisy of evening Cant fault hotel on location and price and is ideal for 2nights shopping trip but personally I wouldnt want to stay longer Needs an update i think

No problems at all for the price. Clean neat and tidy. Vagrants sleeping in doorways outside was not pleasant to see, but is everywhere these days, I suppose. Overall My stay was just fine and good value for the money

The only thing that let my experience down was the bar was closed, and the bar was closed for what feels like a very long time the restaurant didn't seem like a real restaurant.

Although the staff were lovely. We booked a standard triple room and were first sent to a double room. Then told there were no triple rooms available for our first night. As only 2 of us were staying the first night we accepted a twin room - didn’t seem completely finished. No hot water in the morning. Were told it would be sorted as we agreed to stay in that room as our third couldn’t make the trip. Were assured throughout the day that the water would be sorted. Still no hot water the next morning. No restaurant or bar due to refurbishment- not told at booking, checking in or on the website. Have sent an email to customer services but had no response. Wouldn’t stay here again sadly as it is in a perfect spot for the Christmas markets.
