Holiday Inn Express - Birmingham - City Centre by IHG

Stayed for 3 nights for a long weekend. Rooms and breakfast were OK. Good choice of hot breakfast items but it was chaotic at times. Didn't seem to be enough staff to clear tables of dirty crockery. My room had 2 single beds, which i didn't ask for and which was a bit inconvenient. Decent shower in the bathroom with shower gel, shampoo and handwash provided. Also found an iron, ironing board and hairdryer. The main issue was with the lifts. You have to use them for everything unless you are a suoerhero and can manage the stairs. I was in the 15th floor so i needed the lift. When i arrived on Friday one of the 3 lifts was out of order and apparently had been for quite some time. On Saturday a second lift failed leaving just one to service a 17 floor hotel, and there was no urgency to get the other two fixed. The remaining lift being used by housekeeping staff and guests made waiting for it to arrive a real chore. Maybe instead of paying for Father Christmas to be the entertainment at breakfast, who needs to hear 'ho ho ho' and a clanging bell first thing in the morning, the hotel should have been more customer focussed and got the lift situation sorted out. For anyone with mobility issues this was a major problem. For a big international hotel company ICH have dropped the ball here and should and could have done better for their paying guests.

Reasonably clean and tidy in an accessible and walkable location. Generally okay all round. Air con in room was broken and bathroom filled with irritating noise that continued all night. Breakfast was subpar with chewy hashbrowns. Late night food menu choice (pizza) was overpriced and poor.

The bar was very poor said the system was down and couldn’t serve us at 9.30pm on a Saturday evening, was very disappointed that we had to go back out

2 lifts not working out of three. Loud noise in room, couldn't work out if it was the air conditioning. Glad I had earplugs.

Really good hotel. Staying in town for a concert at utilita arena and couldnt be better. 15 minute walk from New Street Station. 15 minute walk to Arena along the canal with loads of eating and drinking places around. Hotel itself was perfect for an overnight stay. Clean and comfortable with a good breakfast in the morning. We would stay again if need something near arena.

Great location near centenary square and the canals. Clean comfortable room, chilled out bar and dining area with free coffees and tea available all day. Limited breakfast but liked the grab and go bags.

Good hotel with nice breakfast. Bedroom as you would expect with the brand,decent towels and comfy beds and excellent wi-fi. TIP. Ask for a room on a lower floor as the hotel has at least 17 floors and lifts can get extremely busy. I would recommend this hotel in the price range.

Very nice hotel, clean and comfortable, spacious room, a decent breakfast and very helpful staff, even at 3am! Great central location too. Just two issues, not insurmountable, but you need to be aware, especially if you have any mobility problems. They struggle to cope with the volume of people at breakfast. There are loads of signs of signs in the lifts, bedrooms, reception etc. warning of this, so you know it will be bad - but it really was chaotic. Items running out regularly, nowhere to sit and a 15 min queue so big it blocked the room. The staff did their absolute best, but it's simply not a big enough breakfast area for the size of the hotel. I'd rather have the option for a slightly cheaper room without breakfast, but they all include it. The lifts are also a bit problematic, 16 floors with only 3 small lifts means crushes and long wait times during breakfast and check out. Overall very good in a lot of ways, but I'd only stay again if I could manage to fit around the off peak times.

Hotel stay was excellent although there was no parking facilities at the hotel. The hotel in the town centre within walking distance of the shops and restaurants. Great location staff very helpful.

My friend and I had a double bedroom each for 1 night on the 7th floor. Unfortunately we found a splattering of what appeared to be blood on the bedding and the bathroom in my room had a foul nauseating smell of raw sewerage. This was really unpleasant especially first thing in the morning. Otherwise the bathroom was clean. Check in was excellent. It was quick, efficient and we were offered 2 rooms next door to each which was perfect. Breakfast was well cooked, there was plenty of food and it was nice & hot. Rooms and other areas of the hotel were clean but there were lots of uncleared tables at breakfast. This meant that there was a scramble to get a clean table. As we were only staying the 1 night we didn’t report the sewerage smell or the small amount of blood on the bedding to hotel staff. We’d stay here again given the close proximity to the city centre, the price and breakfast.

Everything was perfect and staff very friendly, only issue is the dirt/black marks on the shower floor.

Room/bed was comfortable and clean except few stains on carpet looks like been there awhile only real downside was too warm and air con wasnt working so reception provided us with a fan to use which was good x great breakfast !

Everything really clean and comfortable

Family room was really small with barely any space to negotiate around the two beds. To make some room in the morning we put away the sofa bed, and it wasn't so clean underneath. Big stain on the carpet, a lost earring from a former guest, and what even looked like a packet of tissues under the main bed which I didn't investigate. Having said that, the main reception, bar and breakfast area were good, and the breakfast was great with a lot of choices

Bed & Pillow sheets were dirty with clearly visible stains over the 3 night stays. They have never been changed.

The room was lovely and scrupulously clean, the bed was hard, but ok. The view from the 4th floor was great. The lifts were easy to use and immaculate. The receptionist Elsa was lovely. The breakfast area needs to be modified to make it more orderly, as residents were getting in each others way fetching toast and coffee, with others queing for hot food and going back for cutlery and sauces.

Check in was quick and easy. Staff were helpful. Only issue we had was we were in a room next to the elevators and the rooms aren't really sound proofed so could hear them going up and down during the night.

We had a night's stay. Room carpet had stains on and Aircon didn't work. Room was very hot. Breakfast was good though. Location of Hotel was good though.

The room was somewhat small for a family of three, making it difficult to move around the bed. The TV was not a smart model, so we couldn't stream content like YouTube or Netflix. However, the room was clean and functional. The staff were very friendly and helpful, and the breakfast was enjoyable. Additionally, the location was perfect for us, allowing easy access to various sites in Birmingham city centre.

Good location for Centenary Square, Symphany Hall and right by the Mailbox. 10 minute walk to New Street Station. Clean rooms and comfortable beds. A good variety of breakfast choices. Staff were pleasant, helpful and friendly. The only downside was the windows in our room did not open. I assume for safety.

Liked the room, mysterious red stain on carpet by bed in room 202. Air conditioning didnt go low enough as room was too warm. Wanted to cast phone to smart tv but access was blocked Enjoyed the facilities and the breakfast. Matress was on the too firm side. 4.6/5 overall :))

Bed was so hard, awful night sleep, but room was good, as was shower

Check was speedy and without fuss. Room was of a regular, standard quality. However, we were lucky to have the weather and a beautiful view of the city. Blue sky landscape and the city lights at night. 16th floor. The air con seemed poor. Four of us in a small room, it became very warm. We did wait for air con to adjust but it didn’t. We all thought the beds were uncomfortable. The normal bed and sofa bed were just too soft and the pillows were awful. Peaceful night throughout. Breakfast was great as usual. The sausages are amazing. Gutted the hash browns were stone cold, probably a problem with the warmer? Check out was speedy and fuss free.

The staff at this hotel were excellent. From the moment we arrived to check in to the moment we checked out, the staff went above and beyond. Biggest shout outs go to the lady working at the breakfast buffet who grabbed my kids activity books as she could tell they needed to be entertained and the maintenace guy who helped me cut off my lock from my suitcase after I locked the key in the suitcase! That was a very stressful situation given my passports were in there but he saved thw day and then found me while I was leaving and proceeded to give me a spare lock he had. This guy deserves to be employee of the year! He truly went above and beyond! P.s. did I also mention he turned down a tip I offered him when he came up to my room to cut off the lock! True gentleman!

Twice staff entered without knocking. Opened the door while I was asleep and kept shouting “Hello” to wake me up. So only slept for 2 hours, as was worried they were trying to steal my things. Why would they do this? Especially when I was staying for a few days, and wasn’t even check out time. Did complain. But heard nothing back from manager as promised.

Issues at check-in when they discovered that they had checked someone in with the same name as me earlier in the day but only had one reservation in my name and had therefore given away my room. They hadn't asked for any kind of evidence of the booking confirmation or email with which the reservation was made which would have avoided the issue - they just accepted the name as the booking confirmation. Fortunately they still had a room available so we weren't turned away.

Excellent location and staff, reception Mohamed was amazing.

Easy check in with Elsa who was very helpful and happy. She gave us a route to get to local amenities, which saved us so much time and walking. Room was great large enough for us and very clean. We would definitely use this hotel again.

The room was nice and comfortable & the staff were friendly. The only niggles we had was there was a very long queue for check in (I’m not sure what the problem was but once it started moving it went quickly and the person who checked me in apologised for the wait) and with there only being 3 lifts for the 16 floors getting down for breakfast and then to check out took ages

I will definitely stop here again next time I’m in Birmingham. The staff helped me with a personal issue I had with total empathy and support. Special thanks to Dean. Room was spacious and they had a late bar. Broad Street and City Centre Birmingham are all within 10 minutes for the average walker. Thanks again for a great stay.

Polite friendly helpful staff, clean spacious room, good choice for breakfast. Walkable from New Street station, close to canals eating area (sealife/lego), just by the old part (library) and easy to walk to Bullring

Perfectly located in between Train Station and City Center. Easy to reach via walking & very nice staff

Nothing to criticize at the hotel, a really pleasant experience, especially the staff. The only slight downside was the empty building sites surrounding the hotel with no sign of imminent development, giving the area a rather neglected feel. However the Gas Street basin area was very close by which was very pleasant.

Check in was easy. The room was clean and functional. Room as on 9th floor and was very quiet throughout the night. Breakfast in the morning was busy despite going down at the suggested time. The hot breakfast wasn't great except for the bacon. Sausages hard and overcooked. Hash browns sloppy and egg and beans cold.

The breakfast was not suitable for us. There was no cheese, jam, beef/chichen ham selection. Only pork sausage.

The queue far breakfast was ridiculous. I could not get near the hot food buffet. As a result left the hotel without having the breakfast I had paid for. According to a member of staff, there were 500 people expected.

Breakfast was very good and fresh! The dinner offerings left me wanting. Not much variety - very limited. The bar was clean, staff were readily available, but selections were very limited and uninspired. The rooms were very clean, modern and well appointed. An option I would like to have seen would be the availability of a small refrigerator.

Arrived early and was just going to drop our bag off but the gentleman on reception found us an available room so we were able to check in early. Our room was spot on - nice and clean. The bed was comfortable and shower was great. Our only negative was that breakfast was pretty chaotic - difficult to get a table and a long queue for the food.
