Old Swan Hotel

Was staying for eight nights, and was very happy with the room and the facilities. The staff were generally excellent and very helpful, including the housekeeping staff,and the only exception to this was the man who checked me in on arrival. Not as much as a word of welcome,or a smile, or indeed eye contact of any kind. And most certainly not interested in any form of conversation other than moving forward with the check-in procedure. His only interest seemed to be in getting the form signed, and charging me £96 extra for car parking during my stay. On that subject, the car park charges are extortionate in my opinion, and the overflow car park to the rear is quite isolated and surrounded by trees. It certainly is not somewhere that I would be happy leaving my car. I encountered the same check-in man a few nights into my stay, when I return late at night, and there was only him and I in the foyer. But again he didn’t as much as look up from his desk,or greet me in anyway as I entered, or stood about waiting on the very slow lift. As I say, the other staff I had dealings with were very welcoming and polite, but I just felt this particular employee needs a customer care course. Overall, my stay was very pleasant indeed, and I would not hesitate to recommend the hotel, or to return here in the future. I also felt that the room rate for the period I was there was very reasonable. It is an older style Hotel, but I did not feel it was in any way rundown or tired.

Excellent stay, our room was huge and spotlessly clean, the bed was comfortable. Shower was excellent as was breakfast. We stayed with with our dog. The hotel was super dog friendly. Water bowl placed on the room on arrival. Breakfast was served in the bar for dog owners. As the dinning room was out of bounds for dogs. Which i think is fair I would stay again and highly recommend the hotel to anyone.

Everywhere was clean and tidy, staff very helpful not too much, only issue my scooter too big to fit in the lift.

Only lift was Broken it was a tough job to get to third floor and dining room was fully booked so had to go out for evening meal

Lovely hotel and great service. We were down for 2 nights with our dog. Pet friendly hotel, lovely grounds for us and the dog. Very friendly service and location. Had to pay on site parking which was not ideal but is pretty standard I guess in that area.

Below average Had to oay 12£ just to park Car park was hard to find and dark path was not well lit

Room clean and staff helpful and polite. Lift was very slow and broke down on last day. Had to carry cases down by hand.

A very nice hotel. Room clean and good facilities. Decent breakfast with a good choice. Was a bit shocked though at £12 per day car parking charge.

we arrived about 8pm and was allocated a very small and noisy room - next to the hall fire doors which banged closed all evening/night and near the boiler which hummed very loudly all evening and during the night. there was only one chair in the room or no soap dispenser over the bath/shower so did not shower that night. the next morning we found the only soap dispenser empty. so we phoned reception and asked for some soap. this was at 7am and was told housekeeping did not start until 8.30 am. they had no soap in reception. so we asked to be moved to another room so we could have a shower. the receptionist at first said that there was no other room available - hotel was fully booked. she then rang back and said there had been a no show. so we had to pack up and move to the new room which was luckily on the same floor. the new room was lovely. it had 2 chairs! was much bigger than the one we had just left, separate shower and bath and full soap dispensers. we went down to breakfast to be ignored by the waitress - we had to ask for coffee. that was the last straw. so we decided to make a complaint. we spoke to housekeeping as them manager was not available. we told them we were very disappointed with our stay at the hotel. they were very supportive and said they would report back to the manager. we asked for the manager to phone us to discuss this matter. this was two weeks ago. no one has phoned us to discuss our complaint, hence this feedback. 4* stay?

A real shame! The write up was good, photos made it look cosy, quaint and rather indulgent. It was far from it! First room was dusty and badly maintained. The room was big but filled with dark un kept furniture which had its day 15 years ago. Small tv (about 10 years old at least), and the decor was depressing. We asked to be moved. A porter turned up with a tee towel, complaining it was the end of his shift...asking us what we wanted cleaning. We were far from impressed. Eventually a very scruffy front of house found us an alternative room, after a threat of us walking out. Breakfast just awful. Cold food, terrible coffee and worse service. We didnt return during our stay. If you do go..watch out for the £12 per night parking, the 12.5% service fee added to every bill...oh and card only transactions. Harrogate is fabulous and with such a huge amount of competition this hotel just has to do better! Needless to say, we will not be returning.

Lots of history at the Old Swan. Room was spotless. All staff very friendly and helpful. Location is very central with easy parking.

Never been in a cleaner hotel up keep 5 star

The public areas downstairs are quite fancy although a lot of the furniture and the revolving door have seen much betters days.... The wedding parties and others will probably just see those areas but the rest of the place is frankly a bit of a mess. The lift is ancient - none of the lights work, there is no emergency number in the lift and no weight limits. Also no test certificate on display - its a museum piece!! I moved rooms because the one I had (158) was really shabby and had thick cobwebs hanging from the ceiling over the bed - no amenities in the bathroom apart from two plastic-wrapped plastic cups (in this day and age!!), wall-mounted dispensers for combined shower/shampoo gels. Super basic and not worth the £200+ a night price tag. The furniture is old, dark, and heavy - very gloomy. The carpets through the upstairs floors will give you a headache - early 70s vintage psychedelic whirls and swirls. Moved to another room (357) where the socket power went off for a couple of hours just when I needed to do some ironing. No surprise as one of the double sockets in the room had been smashed into the wall leaving a hole that was flapping about.... Most of the walls are just plasterboard and they cover a mulititude of sins I feel. All in all, the staying guests play second fiddle to the function guests downstairs - really, really needs some work.

Room was not fit for human occupation. Terrible damp and mould smells - can still taste that in the back of my throat a week later and we only spent 5 minutes in there before leaving for another hotel. Room looked like it was furnished from a bad charity shop. The most dissappointing thing is that this hotel actually thought it was ok to put people in this room in the first place. We had booked months earlier so they have no excuse. Be very careful with this hotel, because they advertise that the rooms are refurbished, but then they try and put you somewhere that is a total health hazard. Disappointingly, they only refunded just over 50% of the cost (wish we hadn't prepaid). I'm just pleased we got out straight away.

Bedroom windows in very bad state.bedroom furniture definitely passed its best and some kind person scratched our car in the car park .

Great huge room 266. Old and tired but nostalgic. No fridge or safe. TV had to be unplugged at the wall to turn off. No extraction fan in bathroom.

The room was very small with a single bed that rolled around. It was nice to have a bath tub but I thought I had booked and paid for a double bed and I was put in a very tiny room. Didn’t seem like good value for money.

Our room, 242, was at the end of several long corridors but the length of the walk was soon forgotten when we saw the room/suite. Amazing space and comfort.. This is not a modern hotel but staff and facilities were great and we had a lovely breakfast.

Lovely sized room but too hot. No heating on. Had to ask for fans to cool down - window didn't open much. Bathroom small but shower was excellent - water pressure and temperature perfect. Dining room for breakfast worked well - food ok Parking challenging - we went to meet friends and there was only 1 slot left when we returned. We had already paid our £10 to park..

The room was tired, looked a bit grimy. The walls must have been paper thin, as I was woken by steady bonking for a good hour at silly o'clock. If it wasn't so annoying, I would have been quite envious of their stamina! I couldn't adjust the shower head and didn't fancy drowning, so I had a wash down before bed. I found the extra pillow (good), but unlike the rest of the hotel, my room was chilly, the duvet thin and no additional blanket. There was a bottle of mineral water, but it looked like the lid had been chewed by someone trying to open it, so I got a jug of tap water with ice from the restaurant when I went down to dinner. To start I was the only diner, all the tables were laid for breakfast, except for a couple on the left by the radiators. A second couple came in for dinner later. Good points, Lanson by the glass, but the menu was unimaginative and food average. I had visited before, with my husband for a family reunion in the Summer. On that occasion we had a suite and the experience was very, very different. I didn't bother with breakfast, although I had paid for it. Considering how much I was looking forward to returning, albeit on my own as a single female traveller, I was thoroughly disappointed. Room charges for 1 starter and 1 main at dinner, 1 night parking and two drinks (one bar and 1 with dinner) was £66. Be aware, they apply 10% gratuity to everything including drinks and bar is card only. Back to the Crowne Plaza next time I travel there solo.

Breakfast good, staff lovely, clean room and quiet. Only downside, no WiFi in the room and saw a ghost! Quite an interesting experience!

This hotel is beautiful inside and out, and takes you back to a much simpler time, while still being modern, to a point. The corridors (at least on the second floor) have multiple steps up and down, so no room on that floor can be reached by those less able to walk. Our room was roasting hot, because while the radiators were off, the heating system was on, and none of the pipes can be insulated as we could feel the heat coming through the trunking in the room. Our little dog was made to feel really welcome, the bar staff gave her fuss and treats, and there was a cute mat in the bathroom for her to eat on, with a water bowl. My main gripes: 1) for any dog waste the nearest bin is a 5min walk away in Crescent Gardens. I really think the hotel could add one if they're happy for dogs to stay. 2) The fire exit route map on our door was wrong, and needs to be updated as a corridor to a stairwell is now a room.

Staff excellent, hotel olde world/classic, beautiful grounds. Only one adverse comment, no air con and very very warm rooms. Staff were great and changed to a first floor however we would stay there anytime.

Fantastic stay, helpful staff. Great location and very good breakfast. Room was nice also. Will definitely be coming back.

The hotel is comfortable, in a good location, with the interesting history and old times charm. The service to residents is superb.

We have stayed at The Old Swan before and enjoy the position it occupies in Harrogate which is so central yet peaceful. The thing which spoilt our visit this time was the rudeness of two Reception staff. Judging by comments we overheard in the lift other guests also found this pair unfriendly and arrogant. May we suggest that receptionists do not completely ignore guests standing at the desk for 5 - 10 minutes while they continue lengthy phone conversations without even a nod or a smile to acknowledge their presence and the fact that they are patiently waiting to be attended to. ? And that they don't then accuse the guest of " yelling " when they try to ask to be given attention , refer to CCTV cameras in a threatening way , say that they were talking to a Tour Guide ( who is presumably more important than a hotel guest so cannot be interrupted for a second ?? ) etc.

This is a lovely hotel with lots of history. Upgraded room as wanted the larger room. Didn’t realise this included a large sitting room. It was nice but not needed as we were out and about most of the time. The only downside was our waitress in the food hall for breakfast. She was the most unhelpful and miserable one in there. When I asked for something she basically grunted back. I heard others there also ask for different eggs. Again, she grunted back to them and was really unhelpful. Found her very rude. Also, not much choice for vegetarians for cooked breakfast. Perhaps they could add a choice of vegetarian sausages as they had meat ones. Other than this it was a nice hotel.

Had a wonderful stay at the Old Swan hotel. The staff were friendly, attentive and check in was quick. Breakfast was lovely and replenished frequently Would definitely stay here again.

It was the kindness and consideration or the staff throughout my stay that made this a welcoming, relaxed stay. Would highly recommend this hotel

The staff couldn’t do too much for us . Simon on reception was absolutely lovely and very helpful- the manager was kind and the food was excellent . Absolutely couldn’t complain about anything - they went above and beyond in every aspect . We will definitely go back

Good hotel. Excellent location. Whilst not luxury, perfectly OK. Quiet room at the back of the hotel. £10 parking not too bad considering very difficult to park in Harrogate. Didn't eat there so can't comment on the food but walkable to loads of good restaurants.

Beautiful old hotel & well maintained. The staff was very helpful- front desk excellent , restaurant excellent, pub excellent. The location is fantastic and a quick walk to some great restaurants and the Turkish baths. We also walked to the city park and to Harlow car Gardens from the hotel.

What a charming hotel. Full of character with a great team in a perfect location a few minutes walk to Harrogate centre. Definitely recommended.

Traditional hotel. Rooms could do with updating but on the whole a nice hotel with lots of traditional features of a hotel with so much history. Conveniently situated in a quiet area but still only a 5 minute walk from all Harrogate has to offer.

Single room was very spacious. Bathroom too. Bed comfortable. The hotel is very near the town centre and Valley Gardens so could walk in easily in c5mins. Despite this it is in a very quiet location. There is ample parking but a bit pricey.

This is a yester-year classic hotel - sort of from the 1920- 30s when Agatha Christie stayed there. The best thing is the location, frontage and breakfast buffet in a large classical dining room. Don't have dinner in that dining room. The young women were sweet but need training and the food and wine was disappointing and overpriced. They should convert the library or library lounge into a small dining room. The bar was too large and cool to use. The entire place needs an update, like the White Hart and the Fat Badger. ... Nevertheless, a graet place to have a company away day or a small conference.

Lovely hotel big room & great breakfast

Hotel is situated in a perfect spot for visiting the town, however a parking charge of £10 a night is a bit steep to park in the hotel car park! Also we were unable to dine for the duration of our stay as the restaurant was full, events were taking place and they were short staffed. Fortunately the town had many good places to eat but it would have been nice to be informed that this was the case especially as staying in a hotel usually involves dining!

Food was not warm enough and plates for dinner were luke warm spoiling the food, room was cold overnight and no extra blankets available

English breakfast very good, continental breakfast good variety,plenty of fresh fruit drinks, cereal,fruit, plenty of breads for toasting, tea and coffee and refilled.

I loved my stay at the Old Swan. I stayed here because of the Agatha Christie connection. I think they have done a great job of modernizing the hotel but keeping the atmosphere of an old spa hotel. Afternoon tea was lovely. Staff were great, especially in the lounge. My one complaint is that I could not eat in the dining room as it was full, two nights in a row. No where on the web site does it say you have to book ahead, but apparently you do. They would not/could not fit me in, which I think is poor form for their paying guests.
