Refugio Surf Lodge

Room was clean, staff was friendly and the free breakfast was great. Very loud at night however. Not that it matters because you’re so close to the beach, but the pool isn’t clean.

Great location, walking distance to everything. Very nice swimming pool, bar, restaurant and coffee shop. People were coming from all around to buy their coffee! Every one of the staff was very friendly and the recommendations for surf lessons and transportation was great pricing and people!

We enjoyed our stay at the Surf House, but the accommodations were not very good. The room was run down and the shower came out in a trickle. We heard the property used to be a hostel and was bought a year ago. The owners remodeled the restaurant which was absolutely lovely, and the front office. They had not started on the hotel rooms yet. The pool was not kept up- there was debris in it most of the time, which is understandable considering it was surrounded by trees. What made this place comfortable was the staff. They were exceptional! Breakfast came with our stay and it was very, very good. I would not stay there again until the remodeling is complete. Also, the noise from the music next door was extremely loud. I wore earplugs but I could still hear the band. We were warned ahead of time, so it didn't really bother us but please keep this in mind when booking this property. But we will consider staying there again in the future- they are on the right track with the remodel!

Great location, great staff, and amazing restaurant. The parking was a little rough, and the rooms were dated. All in all, was comfortable, but be great if the bathrooms and hot water situation was upgraded. Would definitely stay again.

This place is perfect for a week long getaway! It can be a bit loud at night, but it was nothing that kept us awake at all. The pool was the perfect spot to take a cool dip after a hot day on the beach, and the staff were all the most friendly folks you can ask for. They made every effort to make sure we were comfortable and taken care of. The food at the lodge is also excellent, and we could have eaten it every night if we wanted. Definitely would recommend, and we hope to return soon!

The lodge is in a very walkable area and the staff was very friendly. I would recommend to anybody visiting Tamarindo. The atmosphere, especially at nighttime was great. We enjoyed the bar and live music.

This is a sweet spot. Surrounded by good food, bars, shopping and close to the beach. Staff is awesome, the breakfast is delicious and so was the coffee, they roast it themselves which I thought is a cool touch. Even if you don’t get a room here it’s worth the visit to stop by and enjoy some breakfast or a drink and live music at night

The property was conveniently located made it easy to get around. The staff was very friendly and it had entertainment every night. The food was also very good.

A great little hotel with a good restaurant attache and breakfast included at a bargain price. A little basic but with spacious bedroom and very conveniently located for all shops, restaurants and the beach. Was warned in advance about very loud music snd given the opportunity to cancel but took the chance and took earplugs. Stayed 6 nights and only Friday and Sat night had extremely loud music until 3am so best to avoid those days. Apart from that I would happily go back. Tamarindo though is a very noisy town until about 11pm most days,

We had a fantastic stay recently at Refugio Lodge. The rooms were very clean and had comfortable beds with A/C in the room. Outside the room we were able to enjoy the nice lounge area with pool. With it being a smaller hotel you weren’t having to share the pool with a lot of people like you would see at many other hotels. In most times it was almost like your own private pool. This was definitely a highlight. The breakfast every morning was amazing! I would say best coffee and breakfast food in town! It is very centrally located and you can easily walk to the beach, shopping and the many restaurants in town. It is noisy at night with the surrounding bars and restaurant but nothing ear plugs didn’t take care of. The central location more than made up for the noise. The highlight was the guest experience from the staff. All of the staff at the cafe and bar were very friendly and helpful. Agustín was especially helpful with checking us in and out and was always available to help with planning things to do in town and was a great help to be able to navigate the town and find the best activities and events to fill our time! We would stay here again and again!

I booked my stay at La Oveja Surf House for 7 days and 6 nights but only stayed for 2 nights. The first night we got no sleep due to the noise (we were told) but we never thought it would be an ALL night thing. We thought we could give it another try and stay a second night but it was the same thing noise all night and we got no sleep. There were also ants everywhere and there were so many dead ants behind the beds as if they were sprayed and not cleaned. I woke up to a rash on my hand and when the hotel reached out to me to know why we were checking out early I explained the situation and they replied back with an apology but they should mention that they are the ones that host the events and that’s why there’s so much noise and they could have refunded the remaining 4 nights that were paid for and not used.

The guys in the cafe and the bar staff were all very kind and friendly. The included breakfast was delicious, a great way to start the day. The attached bar/restaurant was a fun bonus, with live music most nights that added to the lively atmosphere. The only downside is that because of its central location, it can be a bit noisy at night from a nearby nightclub (you can’t hear the live music from the bar in the rooms). We were warned of this in advance and Agustin had offered us earplugs as well. It didn’t bother us at all, but if you are sensitive to noise, it may not be the ideal place for you. However, if you’re looking to be in the middle of the action, this is a great spot. Would definitely recommend for anyone wanting a convenient and vibrant place to stay in Tamarindo!

This was a very disappointing experinece. We really looked forward to our 3 nights and now wish we never stayed there. The room was clean but the bathroom was disgusting and stinky (terrible sewage smell). There were old used bars of soap on the shower wall, a dirt ring in the toiler bowl, and someone elses stuff was left on the bathrooms door handle containing toiletries. There was no hot water. Luke warm at best. And terrible water pressure that it was impossible to shower after a day at the beach. No shampoo/conditioner, just a bar of soap. The room was advertised to have a king and queen beds. The king bed was hard as the floor and our backs started hurting from sleeping on it. The queen bed was actually a double and we couldnt use it instead of the king because it was too small. It was also impossible to fall asleep or stay asleep because the club right next door had parties until 3am everg single night that even earplus didnt drain the noise. It felt like the party was literally inside our room. The hotel staff did not give us a heads up about it. The reception was supposed to be available for inquiries via whats app till 11pm but when messaged to inquire about the noise, our messages werent even acknowledged at all. Not even the next morning. The staff were very friendly and the included breakfast at the cafe was delicious, but unfortunately not worth the price we paid for the hotel at all. We'd have rathered paid for breakfast than stay at this place.

No major complaints besides bathroom or room smelling a bit like mildew. I stayed on a Saturday & music or noise was NOT a huge issue. Breakfast in the cafe was delicious as well!! Will visit again

The attached cafe (with free breakfast included) was amazing and i still think about the banana pancakes and coffee. The location was unbeatable being in the heart of Tamarindo, next to the farmers market, walking distance to all the restaurants, and being less than a 5 minutes walk from the beach. The staff helped ensure our trip was memorable with helping coordinate private transportation to and from the Liberia airport and helping schedule excursions to the waterfalls/etc. We are already planning our next trip back and we will be staying here again !!

Wonderful stay at Refugio Lodge. Beds were comfy, rooms clean. Lodge is beautifully decorated. All of the staff I met were so gracious, kind and helpful. Augustin communicated with me via WhatsApp starting the day before my arrival to make sure everything went smoothly. He also provided detailed information on local restaurants and things to do and even arranged a driver for me to get to my next destination. I accidentally overslept and missed both checkout and breakfast. Everyone was so kind about it and made sure I had a delicious avocado toast and eggs for breakfast with some of their delicious coffee that they make in house. Perfect location. Just a short walk to the beach. Shops all around. I could t have been more impressed with everything. There was a lot of music I could hear but made for a very festive time in the heart of Tamarindo.

The location is great, the restaurant is delicious and lively, the breakfast is perfect. The room are in decent condition but smell humidity which make it hard to breathe, no light, good to sleep!

We loved the food, friendly staff, comfy bed, shower, cold AC. There is no mini fridge. But there is a grocery store across the street if the kitchen is closed at Refugio.

Eat here. Don’t sleep here! Great location in the middle of town. Hotel resto has lovely food and attentive service. Hotel is mediocre but safe and clean enough. I stayed one week, but this is not a four-star hotel. It’s situated in a vortex of noise thanks mostly to a neighbouring disco that’s open 9pm – 3am. every. single. day. Earplugs barely muffle the noise. The music is stupid loud, and the hotel’s walls are paper thin. And, there’s even more noise to contend with: live music in the restaurant some evenings; construction noise starting early morning; street noise from cars, all-terrain vehicles, and delivery trucks; scraping noises from the hotel’s metal roof (tree branches? monkeys?). Hotel staff is great except for one who asked me what I do for a living. Don’t ask your guests that. It’s none of your beeswax! Even rocket scientists take vacation, okay? The hotel maintains vestiges of its hostel past. The rooms are long rectangles with 11-foot ceiling. Rooms are in surprising disrepair, or perhaps this is the result of bad renovations. Water in the shower is tepid but plentiful. Got a towel change halfway through the week, but I could not get staff to sweep my room of sand even after two promises that it would be done (it’s a beach town!). The hotel’s pool is small and sad, but the beach is a 5-min walk away. Loved the room’s metal door and deadbolt for safety. Wi-Fi worked reliably and so did cable TV so I could barely hear the TV over music from the disco!!

This place was near everything, but it seemed like Las Ovejas and the neighbouring bar were competing with their music until 3:00 am. It felt like we were in a speaker playing 2 different songs at the same time. You can tell the common area was nice at one time, but needs some love. The hotel seems forgotten about and the restaurant out front (which is beautiful) is the priority. Also, our mattress was rock hard and that’s coming from people who aren’t picky. We will stay somewhere else next time.

Wonderfully helpful staff, well air-conditioned rooms, and the included breakfast has several options and is delicious! It is unfortunate that the neighboring business is quite loud at night, but given the relatively low cost for a location so close to central Tamarindo, it was worth the price. Take care not to keep food in the room though, with no fridge or storage areas the ants will find it VERY quickly.

They were very communicative and ensured a peaceful stay. As soon as I arrived early, they made sure everything was accommodated and even let me check in early. The dinner + breakfast they provided on site as well was also PHENOMENAL. Their coffee shop may also be the best in tamarindo. The only thing you may be concerned about is the noise of the nearby clubs, but they even provide ear plugs. The rooms are clean and spacious, with large beds, clean bathroom, safe, fast Wifi and air conditioning. Overall the vibes were incredible and I would surely stay again. The hotel has everything you need for a stay in Tamarindo. While it isn’t a luxury all-inclusive, it offers everything else you need for a welcomed, comfortable stay. I booked this hotel for my fiance and I. For the most part it was a nice facility. We arrived late at night on a Friday around 10:30pm and the restaurant was turned into a nightclub (which was disclosed when booking). However, the rooms were about 50 meters from the night club and it was very loud. Again, the booking did disclose that it would be loud, but I was not expecting it to be right outside of our room. Inside the room was pretty bare, very limited amenities, but it was clean and matched the pictures I saw online. All and all this hotel was just not for my fiance and I and we checked out after one night. The manager was very kind and refunded our remaining days. I would say that this hotel is a great stay for younger people looking to dive into the nightlife and party. That is just not what we were looking for. The free breakfast was very good and the staff was all very friendly.

I cannot say enough positive things about my recent stay at Refugio Lodge. It was a perfect vacation in best location staying at the most hospitable and lovely place. Prior to my stay Agustín was extremely quick to respond to our dozens of questions about Costa Rica and made tons of recommendations and suggestions. Firstly, Refugio is in the PERFECT location in the heart of Tamarindo. Beach 5 min walk away, amazing restaurants, great bars and a supermarket across the street. Refugio itself was great. Large room and the restaurant/bar attached to the hotel was my favourite part. Delicious breakfast and coffee- I looked forward to it every day! And each night there was awesome live music or a dj where it was always happening and lively. I never stayed at a hotel before that had a better lounge or restaurant. Also everyone who worked there was funny and friendly! Such a breath of fresh air. I will say that it’s noisy at night, while you are in the heart of Tamarindo near nightclubs and bars, but if you have a couple of glasses of wine and on the beach all day or on an excursion, you’ll still sleep like a baby! I would definitely return. In fact, there is no other place. I would stay in Tamarindo . highly recommend staying here! You won’t regret it if you are fun and appreciative wonderful customer service and great food. Ps. Try the Caipirinha’s at the Refugio Bar… to die for!

This was our first time staying in Tamarindo, and Agustín made sure that our trip was perfect. We will definitely be back to stay at Refugio Lodge. Agustín goes above and beyond to help arrange everything you need during your stay - from transportation, to outings like surfing and crocodile tours. He also made a point to tell us about good spots to visit, and interesting things happening nearby, such as the night market that is just down the street on Thursdays. Refugio Lodge is small - just six rooms - so you often have the pool to yourself, and you get personal attention from staff that would not be possible at a bigger place. Your stay includes a fantastic breakfast and some of the best coffee in the area every morning. The beds were comfortable and the courtyard is beautiful. The location is close to everything -- grocery stores, banks, great food, the beach, shopping, it's all right there. Keep in mind that the trade off for a great location is that you are in the center of town, and Tamarindo knows how to party, so you will be surrounded by restaurants and bars playing loud live music at night, especially on Fridays and Saturdays. Refugio warned us about the noise when we booked, so we brought earplugs and didn't have any trouble going to sleep. It was also nice and quiet by 2am. But it is important to book with realistic expectations about the area. Thank you Refugio Lodge for hosting us, we couldn't have imagined a better stay.

The team at Refugio was incredibly helpful and informative. We got help booking tours before we even got to the hotel. The hotel is very central, with easy access to the beach, shops, restaurants and clubs. The restaurant has a great menu. Highly recommend the cocktails!

Wow location is what it's all about! This wondrful hotel is walking distance to everything including the beach. When we first arrived we were greeted by Hillary. she immediately made us feel like family. She was incredibly helpful. She arranged the best sunset catamaran for us. So much fun. The red. WOW what a delicious huge breakfast at their beuatiful restaurant The owner came over and introduced himself What a great cool guy! Also makes you feel like you're at his home We can't say enough wonderful; things about the staff, service and overall experince. We will definitely be back.

The staff warned us multiple times about the late night noise from the disco next door (even when we checked in) but we liked the place so much we stayed an extra night anyway. Two members of staff also bent over backwards to help us get on the road when we discovered our rented car had a flat battery.

This was my first solo trip. Staff was friendly and helpful. Bilingual. Convenient location to nightlife and the beach. Always gave great recommendations for activities and places to eat. Highly recommend. Always felt safe and at home.

Our stay at Refugio was very romantic and pleasant. The front office manager, Augustin, did a very good job personalizing our experience to the best of his ability. He helped me pick out the perfect surf shop and beach location for waves and was exceptional being available for questions throughout our stay. The coffee their was fantastic and me and my girlfriend loved his food recommendations.

We stayed here for five nights and absolutely loved it. It’s in the center of town with everything right by. The room was perfect and the hotel itself was beautiful!

Location of this property puts you right in the middle of the action of the vibrant party surf town. Walk to all nightlife, beach, shopping and dining is very convenient! Live music and dancing nearby and on the property. Don't expect quiet going to sleep - embrace the experience. The staff, included breakfast and coffee were AMAZING! this was our first time visiting costa rica (tamarindo specifically) and we chose to stay at refugio lodge for its convenient location and short walk to the beach. the daily breakfast and sunset bonfire tour with Johan (cafe barista) were some our trip highlights. all of the staff were super friendly and nice which made it feel like home! the noise level was a bit more than what we read from other reviews; we were hoping to have some quieter nights after the weekend. overall it was a good stay and the noise at night did not ruin our experience!

Very cool place in a great location if you’re looking to be in the night life, close to the beach, and by all of the restaurants. As all of the other reviews, and the hotel said in advance, it is loud at night. The food is good, service was excellent, and it is exactly as advertised.

As other reviewers indicate, it is very noisy at night. It sounds like a boom box is in the room - it would have been fine if it was just music, but the DJ was also screaming at regular intervals "Sexy Time!". We had to change rooms because the shower was not working. For breakfast, which is included, they would not allow us to get the fruit smoothie bowls - they only let you choose from the cooked menu. When I asked for an exception - even though the prices were the same - it was treated as a big deal. When our smoothie bowls came, I noticed they were way smaller than the portions they were giving other customers. Staff is nice, but I felt like they were insincere. Usually in Costa Rica the people are very warm and authentic, but here it really felt they just wanted our money. Would not recommend.

Even if you don’t get a room here it’s worth the visit to stop by and enjoy some breakfast or a drink and live music at night

We had a fantastic stay recently at Refugio Lodge. The rooms were very clean and had comfortable beds with A/C in the room. Outside the room we were able to enjoy the nice lounge area with pool. With it being a smaller hotel you weren’t having to share the pool with a lot of people like you would see at many other hotels. In most times it was almost like your own private pool. This was definitely a highlight. The breakfast every morning was amazing! I would say best coffee and breakfast food in town! It is very centrally located and you can easily walk to the beach, shopping and the many restaurants in town. It is noisy at night with the surrounding bars and restaurant but nothing ear plugs didn’t take care of. The central location more than made up for the noise. The highlight was the guest experience from the staff. All of the staff at the cafe and bar were very friendly and helpful. Agustín was especially helpful with checking us in and out and was always available to help with planning things to do in town and was a great help to be able to navigate the town and find the best activities and events to fill our time! We would stay here again and again!

Absolutely enjoyed this place and would stay again. Right in the heart of the city and close to everything. Breakfasts were delicious and were some of our favorite meals while in CR.

As he got to know more about our trip, he offered additional personalized tips and advice that made our experience even better. The entire team at Refugio Lodge is genuinely dedicated to making your stay unforgettable. The lodge’s central location puts you right in the middle of all the action. While the vibrant nightlife adds some noise, it’s all part of the authentic Tamarindo vibe. And let’s talk about the food- WOW. We tried everything on the menu, and every bite was phenomenal! The Avocado Toast is a must-have. If you're looking for a place that perfectly blends comfort, outstanding service, and unbeatable proximity to everything Tamarindo has to offer, Refugio Lodge is the one.
