It was tired, outdoors unkept, garbage overflowing all around, layout, parking situation, check in process, and room location to the parking lot were not accommodating to guests. Had we had more luggage than just one nights worth, I would have asked to change rooms. The pool was closed unknowing to us which really disappointed my kiddo and there was no empathy from the staff or offer to reduce the already outrageous rate, or do something to make up for the lack of pool. For what they were charging for this very tired location I would have expected some sort of positive, but we did not. Neighbors were loud due to thin walls. Could not open the windows to get fresh air and the a/c unit was not efficient. It was 85 degrees. There was 1 old coke machine that wasn’t even full. We will not be back.

The property is located conveniently in downtown Houghton, MI. There are several restaurants that are easily accessible by walking. The lobby looked up to date and had hot cocoa, coffee, and fresh baked cookies for guests. The gentleman who was working the front desk was friendly and helpful. Our room was on the third floor, however there was no access to the elevator from the lobby. We had to go outside and enter from a different door to use the elevator. We had a lot of stuff with us and we decided it was easier to use the elevator. When we arrived we knew there would be snow, however it was very snow covered in the parking lot and that made it challenging to use the hotel cart. Our room smelled musty when we entered and there were areas where the trim was coming off the walls. It appeared clean but we struggled with the smell. The beds were soft and comfortable. We did get a good nights sleep while we were there. We specifically booked this hotel because my younger daughter loves to swim and it has a pool. The pool looked like it needed a good cleaning. Very nice location walkable to downtown area. Room was okay. Toilet kept running had to try and fix multiple times. Room was right by building entrance heard everything in middle of night. Tried to go in hot tub but there was so much chemical it made your eyes burn.

When i arrived at the hotel there was no parking available so i couldnt stay. Staff told me to park at some park someplace and walk back. I asked for a refund as i was leaving. They denied it and kept my money for a room i didnt use

Very dark rooms given the enclosed walkway in front of most of the rooms. Stairs to 6 floor cant be meeting code on west side. Way to narrow, actually dangerous going down.

There is not enough parking. The building is old (and shows it) and so is most of the rooms. Too many steps. You really have to watch the steps going up and down. There is one elevator on one side of the building. So if you are on the opposite side there is actually more waling than taking the steps. It does not meet the name of this place.

My stay was $390 for one night. I called to ask if I could get an extra blanket and they said “if they had one.” No one ever showed up. There were stains on the walls, the carpet had trash all over the corners and the bathroom was disgusting.

I knew this wasn’t a 5 star property, but this was well below my expectations. The wi-fi signal didn’t work in the room, just the hallway. The ceiling had a huge crack with a shoddy repair and for a three night stay we had no housekeeping. Would not stay here again, regardless of price.

Only room available due to graduation at college. Rate extraordinarily inflated. Building floor uneven. Loud echoing children running on stairs. One ice machine right outside our room. Only large enough for one person to move about room at a time. Bathroom tiny. Mold along baseboard. Opened a dresser drawer and shocked at something growing inside. Nearly fell or tripped several times. Unsafe for elderly or disabled individuals.

The girl at the front desk was very nice. The room had cobwebs and the shower was not cleaned well at all. The curtains do not close all the way so people can see in your room.

Our room had a terrible smell, mouldy and dirty carpet, bathroom had a warped door, and bed didn’t feel or look clean. This is a badly renovated motel and isn’t up to the usual level of Choice Hotel standard. Breakfast was good.

We appreciated the convenience to the downtown Houghton district - it's very walkable and has lots of excellent dining options and great shops. We were overcome by a strong musty odor upon entering our room. A bulb in the vanity fixture flashed during use, the bathtub/shower drain was clogged, the side chair was stained, and the area guide book was badly worn and stained. It was a huge disappointment, given the cost for the room.

Great location right downtown, our room had an amazing view of the pool. The hotel is quirky, but clean and the beds were comfy. Parking is a bit of a nightmare especially when they are booked, but we made it work. Will definitely stay here again!

This is a great location within walking distance to dining and shopping in downtown Houghton. But the room with 2 queen beds was quite cramped. The bathroom reminded me of a motor home.

The rooms were clean and looked nice. The beds were comfortable. The walls are so thin we could hear every word the neighbors said, we could clearly hear people talking in the hall, we were right across from an entrance and got to listen to the outside door slam. There was hardly any water pressure. We went down to breakfast between 8:30 and 9:00 and there was no coffee, no hard boiled eggs and no hot food for more than 15 minutes. The breakfast attendant was working her but off. It was move-in days at MTU, they had to know that and should have been better prepared. If at all possible I probably won't stay here again.

The hotel is actually a motel that they enclosed the hallways and made an attempt to update it. The upgrades are hit and miss. The roof leaked into our room (and other places), and yes, the staff knew about it. The windows look into a sad, enclosed hallway that all of the AC units blow into (very hot). The location is great, but the property needs a lot of work; maybe start over! This is all about supply and demand - very limited supply and they demand a high price for what in most towns would be shut down because of poor conditions (not sure what building codes are enforced here - very questionable in my opinion). I would never stay there if other options were available.

Everything is old, the A/C is super noisy and smells awful. I stayed in a two queen bed standard room, it is unbelievablely small, and the window is towards the aisle, basically means you have no window. Do not stay in this hotel if you have other choices.

Had we had more luggage than just one nights worth, I would have asked to change rooms. The pool was closed unknowing to us which really disappointed my kiddo and there was no empathy from the staff or offer to reduce the already outrageous rate, or do something to make up for the lack of pool. For what they were charging for this very tired location I would have expected some sort of positive, but we did not. Neighbors were loud due to thin walls. Could not open the windows to get fresh air and the a/c unit was not efficient. It was 85 degrees. There was 1 old coke machine that wasn’t even full. We will not be back.

During my trip this is the only hotel that really went the extra mile. I needed handicap rails and accessories, the management went out and bought some to fulfill my needs. Also the staff gave us tips and pointers about local and unusual places to visit not listed on the local brochures. If i ever get back there again I will absolutely to book my stay at this hotel.

When i arrived at the hotel there was no parking available so i couldnt stay. Staff told me to park at some park someplace and walk back. I asked for a refund as i was leaving. They denied it and kept my money for a room i didnt use

Very nice location walkable to downtown area. Room was okay. Toilet kept running had to try and fix multiple times. Room was right by building entrance heard everything in middle of night. Tried to go in hot tub but there was so much chemical it made your eyes burn.

Centrally located in downtown Houghton. Lots of steps. Older facility in decent repair. Parking was an issue first night having to park in the city "overflow" & walk to the hotel. Room was clean. Had a great view of the canal and lift bridge (room 501). Across the street from the Ambassador Restaurant! Amy & staff were great!

Was a great place to stay on our motorcycle cycle trip on our way to Copper Harbor when we were passing through. Front desk was very friendly & helpful. Pool and hot tub area was nice as well as the complimentary large breakfast. Would stay again.

The property is located conveniently in downtown Houghton, MI. There are several restaurants that are easily accessible by walking. The lobby looked up to date and had hot cocoa, coffee, and fresh baked cookies for guests. The gentleman who was working the front desk was friendly and helpful. Our room was on the third floor, however there was no access to the elevator from the lobby. We had to go outside and enter from a different door to use the elevator. We had a lot of stuff with us and we decided it was easier to use the elevator. When we arrived we knew there would be snow, however it was very snow covered in the parking lot and that made it challenging to use the hotel cart. Our room smelled musty when we entered and there were areas where the trim was coming off the walls. It appeared clean but we struggled with the smell. The beds were soft and comfortable. We did get a good nights sleep while we were there. We specifically booked this hotel because my younger daughter loves to swim and it has a pool. The pool looked like it needed a good cleaning. I’m not sure if it was a filter issue but we were skeptical of spending any significant time in it. The breakfast was appreciated but left something to be desired. The best item was the make your own waffles. If we return to Houghton we will probably stay somewhere else.

The rooms were clean and looked nice. The beds were comfortable. The walls are so thin we could hear every word the neighbors said, we could clearly hear people talking in the hall, we were right across from an entrance and got to listen to the outside door slam. There was hardly any water pressure. We went down to breakfast between 8:30 and 9:00 and there was no coffee, no hard boiled eggs and no hot food for more than 15 minutes. The breakfast attendant was working her but off. It was move-in days at MTU, they had to know that and should have been better prepared. If at all possible I probably won't stay here again.

It was a great location and easy to check in and park. There was no direct light from outside, the carpet felt wet and the ceiling paint was peeling. Walking to the breakfast was borderline scary. The man who checked us was very friendly and helpful.

Our room door was hard to close and open, had to give it a good push to get into the room. There was also not a working bathroom fan so when using the shower, the entire room got humid, and as a result the bathroom door was pretty swollen from water and didn't shut all the way. We also did not have trash bags in our room trash cans. The hottub was pretty dirty and the jets didn't work so it was basically a warm public bathtub.
