Was a very nice place to stay. Room was really nice. Everything looked brand new and was kept up nicely. Had plenty of options surrounding the hotel for shopping and restaurants. Only recommendations would be to pave the back lot behind the hotel and install some lighting. Wasn’t comfortable leaving my vehicle parked back there due to no lighting. And lots of large puddles where I tried to initially park and would’ve had to step into one in order to get out of vehicle. Ended up parking in lot next door.

The property is new and clean. The front desk was very nice and accommodating. There also is a Walmart right across the parking lot. There is no elevator so be prepared if you are in the second floor.

We had very clean, quiet rooms with plenty of parking. The hotel offers some fresh fruit, microwaveable breakfast sandwiches, and fresh fruit. Each room had a small kitchen sink, microwave, and fridge. There was even an option for onsite laundry. Location was conveniently located in town and near a Wal-Mart.

Excellent place among many: good value amid hotel row. Clean, comfortable, usual amenities. Having to download app (96mb!?) for room key is annoying bc I still had to go to desk to check in and out. Easy drive to all local sights.

Didnt know there was no maid service. The key from the app didnt work-had to wait for an employee to let us in. The tub is incredibly slippery!! This needs to be addressed. No coffee or water in the lobby. Clean rooms, but overall not impressed

Independence Stay was a wonderful place to stay in Houghton, Michigan. All the ladies at the reception area were so friendly and helpful. The rooms were immaculate with lots of space. We highly recommend Independence Stay Hotel!

This hotel had a new feel to it. Everything was clean. Room was spacious with a refrigerator, microwave, hot plate type stove, etc. Bathroom was big with a lot of area to put your toiletries and curling wands, etc. Could not hear anyone else in nearby rooms with the exception of hotel doors closing. There is a washer and dryer down the hall. They do provide breakfast bars but breakfast is not included. I was ok with that as i was spending $150 less a night than my friends at the Hampton. The bed was super comfortable too. The only problem i had was preregistering for the room so i had to go through the registration desk when i arrived. Service is spotty in the U.P. I will stay there again when in the area.

The room looked beautiful and the surfaces were clean. However, the floors were unswept and sandy you could not walk in your bare feet and had to literally wipe you feet on the bath mat I spread on the floor by the bed before you could bring your feet up into the bed.

Omg..We can not wait to come back and stay here. The room was super clean and well stocked. Bed was a little springy for our liking and no breakfast sandwiches were stocked this morning but we did not mind as the staff and room itself exceeded our expectations..

Very nice, clean room. Appears to be a newer built hotel. There were not a lot of other visitors there so it was nice and quiet. Our king sized bed room had a whole small kitchen in it, with dining ware and all! (Which was great when my salad was delivered w/o a fork) I would stay again!

The rooms include a kitchenette with refrigerator/freezer, microwave, coffee maker, 2 burner cooktop, cookware & cooking utensils, dishes & cutlery, glassware, bar sink with dish soap & dish drainer. Our rooms were very clean and the beds were comfortable. However, there is no elevator leading to the second floor, and the stairs are located at each end of the building. Be sure to request a first floor room if you have a handicap or disability. Also, the internet was very spotty -- knowledge and ability to add a hotspot are highly recommended.

This hotel is very clean and modern. It is also very noisy. If you are on the bottom floor you can hear all kinds of noises from upstairs above you, not to mention tons of pounding noises, chair sliding, and door closing.

This property was really good. Clean, spacious, close to downtown Houghton. The only reasons it did not get five stars. 1. No breakfast. They provide pre-wrapped muffins and snack bars and juice bottles, and apples, but no place to eat and nothing fresh. We knew this going in, but it was still inconvenient. 2. The sofa sleeper mattress was the WORST. No support whatsoever. The king bed was very comfortable. Overall a positive experience.

The staff were really friendly and attentive. I also only paid about $133 per night for this property (somehow booking in advance) which made it an even better experience. Having a full kitchen and separate bedroom was great!

Everything was good until we received a call: first time I missed since I left hotel on the road driving, about a fe minutes later we received the second call. A lady rudely questioned us if we saw a sign to clean up the dishes after we use. I told her we cleaned every single item we used. The plates and bowls got all cleaned. There is no rack and no dishes washer so we washed all but did not put away to cabinet because they are wet. Besides clean all dishes, we make sure all surfaces including oven surfaces we cleaned before we left. It was a big shock for us to receive the call and a big shock to us to hear her tone of voices. We thought she might have missed up with different room number. Even so, calling the customer to accuse them not wasting dishes is strange at least.

Everything was fantastic at this location. The staff were always kind and cheerful. They had recommendations for food or coffee when you asked and a sheet available at the desk too. There isn’t an elevator but the man at the desk helped me get a heavy item up to my room without my asking. It was all very clean and the kitchen supplies was well thought out. It even had a countertop with electric burners i didn’t expect. I definitely recommend this hotel to anyone looking for a place to stay in Houghton.

We didn’t have a car so we were grateful there was a restaurant we could walk to. We came to the UP for a family vacation. We flew in, arriving about 7 PM. The rental car office closes at 5 PM, long before either of the two flights from Chicago arrive. Uber and Lyft just perpetually spun “looking for driver“. We did finally get a hold of a taxi driver who took us back to the airport to pick up our car. The hotel didn’t make it any easier. They said there was nowhere they could store our luggage so that we wouldn’t have to take it back to the airport to pick up our car and they would charge us $25 to check out one hour late. I won’t be coming back to the UP.

A newly built hotel. Clean, spacious and comfortable. No elevator so it was a pain to carry suitcases up to second floor. Gave only 2 stars because we had to checkout a day early and pay for third day in spite of trying to modify reservation on Hotels.com before the two day cancellation policy and tried calling hotel directly to modify reservation. The room rate increased drastically so changing to two nights instead of three would result in a higher cost so we just paid for our original three night reservation. Don’t understand why we couldn’t just eliminate one day without canceling whole reservation and rebooking at higher rate. Not sure if this was Hotels.com or Independence Stay’s cancellation policy but manager was no help even though this was a “pay at property” not a prepaid reservation.

Great check in process with extremely busy graduation weekend at MTU. Hotel room looks like I’m the first to stay here. Hotel receptionists was very friendly!!

Stayed here for 5 nights. Very comfortable, great location. Really nice hotel. There's also a really nice and clean lanudry room that we made use of on our last day. There's almost a full kitchen, just no stove, but a full size fridge and microwave, no pool. The cleanliness, location, price and amenities were outstanding. We would stay here again next time. Its not downtown Houghton, but if we didnt sray herr, we probably wouldnt have visited this area of town. Very short drive to downtown and to mich tech campus.

Staff was very friendly. The rooms are spacious with lots of amenities. It is a newer building outside of the downtown area. It would be a great place to stay for a few days while visiting the area. Unfortunately, we were only there for 1 night.

The room I had was like a bachelor apartment, with kitchen, medium sized fridge and lots of room. Very clean and newish room. It's not near downtown or the water but it was also much cheaper than the alternatives. The nearby Walmart was good for stocking up.

I loved having a kitchenette! This location was convenient for my snowshoe adventures as well. The Maasto Hiihto and Chassel trail systems are an easy drive from here and both excellent venues.

The Independence was very clean, the room was very nice. It was convenient and the staff was very pleasant. Even though they did not have a restaurant nor continental breakfast, they did give us a coupon for the restaurant /bar/arcade next door. We will stay there again. Near to Michigan Tech, but not walking distance.

Really enjoyed staying at the Independence Stay hotel in Houghton- very new and nice. Rooms were “roomy” Coffee in lobby; nice. Recommend having complimentary water in lobby too. Thank you!

This property was really good. Clean, spacious, close to downtown Houghton. The only reasons it did not get five stars. 1. No breakfast. They provide pre-wrapped muffins and snack bars and juice bottles, and apples, but no place to eat and nothing fresh. We knew this going in, but it was still inconvenient. 2. The sofa sleeper mattress was the WORST. No support whatsoever. The king bed was very comfortable. Overall a positive experience.
