The Belsfield Hotel

Staff were excellent and could not do enough for you. The food was fantastic and we ate in the restaurant. The hotel looks a bit tired and shame the pool was not available but it had a warm friendly feel to it.

The historic building is fabulous, the atmosphere great, it's the pole position in Windermere, great view on the lake. I wonder if it is necessary that during the summer season the building is under construction. With scaffoldings in front of the windows, some parts of the building beside the entrance in bad condition, and even a corridor we had to pass everyday was stuffed with furniture, cardboard boxes ... This is not the atmosphere for holidays. Due to repairs on some wires, the internet connection broke down every night. The location is great, but there's some work to do to bring it back to its standard.

We were not informed that there would be building works happening at the hotel prior to booking. The reception staff confirmed that the management team had decided not to mention this on the website. The building works completely covered the garden area which is highlighted as a big USP of the hotel, meaning we paid the full amount for our booking, but werent able to enjoy the property and the views. Also the lifts were not working which meant we had to climb up and down 2 flights of stairs. The hotel were kind enough to eventually move us to their sister hotel when we complained about this.

The lift was out of order. We wanted a lake view and to use the gardens, but there was scaffolding impeding our view and all laid across the gardens. If we knew about this, we would not have stayed at this property. We had no choice but to stay because we had nowhere else to go. We would like a refund for this terrible experience because it was not as described or advertised and we weren’t given an opportunity to change our minds.

The building and location are fantastic. The furniture inside is tacky and dated. The beds are so uncomfortable and the outdoor seating area could be glorious. The lift needs manual intervention each time for it to descend - it’s 2025…time for an upgrade. No toiletries, not even slippers were provided. The buffet is equivalent to premier inn’s.

Great location and view of Lake Windermere. Unfortunately when making the booking we were not made aware of the ongoing renovation at the hotel, therefore we ended up with a noisy bedroom, could not use the gym and the bathtub was blocked. We did not have bath towels upon checking in, when I asked for hair conditioner, the front desk referred me to the Tesco down the road! This is not a 4 star hotel, not the amenities not the service level.

Lovely stay for 2 nights. Staff lovely and professional. Really don't understand why residents have to pay £15 per day to park car at hotel. Would deter me staying in future

I booked a stay for my mums 80th birthday! The staff were extremely helpful and friendly, offering advise on places to see and dine. The grounds are immaculate and location overlooking the lake superb and very convenient for river traffic and riverside walks. The places to visit are in abundance around the area and staying in a central location at the Belsfield made this possible. I look forward to returning on completion of the due renovations, including swimming pool and gym. Thanks for making our stay a memorable one, and see you again soon. Regards Dr T Watson

Great location. Check in was good, car parking explained to us. Disappointing that you have to pay extra to park at hotel. Room was comfortable, breakfast was ok. Shown to a breakfast table with very dirty windows overlooking a building site. We weren’t informed that there was building renovations taking place. Staff all very friendly.

Negatives: Mandatory £100 reserved on your card on check-in "just in case" you decide to order room service. This feels cheeky. I'd rather pay for room service as and when it's used. £15 for parking in the hotel grounds. This makes you feel like you're being fleece. Surely parking should be included in the stay. Overall the food was good, but while the chips certainly looked the part they were undercooked and hard inside. Hotel looks nice in some places but a little tired in others. There's work currently being done to the hotel and I assume from our bathroom which looked modern that our room had been done, but the room itself looked a little worn with several tears on the wallpaper. Positives: Perfect location close to town and with a lovely view over the lake. We walked into town from the hotel. Very friendly and attentive staff. Service was great. Apart from the disappointing chips, the food was good. Breakfast was good with lots of choice. Great bacon and sausages in the full English.

There was lots of building work going on, really noisy early morning. Pillows like pancakes so take ur own. The bathroom could have done with a grout clean it was really mouldy. Blinds were dirty. Furniture very dated. The ceiling over bed was about to fall in. The glass cabinet in the hall was displaying wedding table arrangements which was all full of dirty water. You would think that a display for advertising would be pristine. I would give this a 3 star. Gardens were beautiful until I walked down hill to find lots of empty bud bottles. No hairdryers. £15 a night for parking a bit cheeky.

We checked in and was took to our room but was dissapointed to find our room was cold and very damp, we informed the reception who was really good and moved us straight away to another room. This unfortunatly had damp on the walls over the main window and cobwebs on the coving and in the bathroom, the TV didnt work. The room was an upgrade on what we initinaly had so we didnt want to complan again. The staff her are absolutly brilliant and willing to help out when the can

Hotel room not very clean .. also had broken window..chip out of bottom of bath… but the bed was very comfy, the shower was great and the staff were great.. and the view is unreal ..overall its a not a bad hotel but not worth the money

The hotel is a great location, I feel like it does rely on that for the price point. There’s lots of areas that need a fresh lick of paint and a deep clean. Also, there’s only the breakfast room that overlooks the lake so that’s your only chance to enjoy the views if you are in a standard room. The room was beautiful however again, mould patch above window and areas that needed a good clean eg the bath needed some unblocker and the radiator had open pipes due to missing part which revealed a lot of dust. Also, only has shutters so for people who like darkness like me, you aren’t getting that- I would expect curtains over the blinds and a turn down service for the amount it costs. Also, would have been nice to have cases taken to room or atleast directed to the easier route to avoid wandering round trying to find the room with cases. The gardens are lovely and a big perk is being able to get to the pier through the gardens, would have been lovely to know information like this on arrival.

The hotel was not clean. The room smelled like cigar, the room was dirty, sheets were all dirty and the carpet as well.

Room was lovely and spacious and was clean. Bed was comfortable and we slept well. Breakfast was plentiful with good choice and very tasty. The hotel is doing some renovations but it had no effect on our stay. Would definitely look to stay again

The downstairs common areas are really lovely. The grounds, the lounges and the staff were great. The room on the other hand was very shabby. Room 83. The furniture was shabby, a previous leak had made the ceiling bulge. The crack and bulge has just been painted over. The bathroom was not clean and again, very shabby. This is such a shame as I had wanted to stay here for a while. There is no welcome literature or info in your room. The bedroom felt a bit baron, not the Laura Ashley vibe at all. The downstairs and upstairs do not match. The stairs and carpet are very worn and the carpet is filthy. The lift did not work and we checked in an hour late due to our room not being ready. I have to stay the staff did make up for this and offered as a complimentary drink when we couldn’t check in so complaints there. A hotel of two halves!

Staff were very friendly, but the hotel needs updating, the shower didnt drain properly and no extractor fan which may have been why the room had mould around the windows.

Room was clean and comfortable. All the staff were lovely, pleasant and helpful. Good choice at breakfast.

Cant fault the staff. Amazing to find such a polite,helpful, happy team. They are a credit to you. I hope you treat them, as well as they treat your guests. The room was just right. It was very clean and faultless.

Hotel was comfortable - location spot on with lovely views from the restaurant. Room was nice but really hot so glad they had a fan in the wardrobe. Don't bother with full english breakfast - it was re-heated and not worth the money - stingy portion size too - would stay again but without breakfast.

Love the hotel room the four poster bed with the lake view. Great location, very close to the shopping area, cafes, bars, restaurants & the lake. Breakfast need to improve, very standard, not many options. We extended our stay, but we were little bit disappointed how the house keeping tidy up our bed. Should be the same quality as we checked in, not very tidy as supposed to be, specially with the room we paid.

Tail of two sides. Plus - perfect location, staff friendly and food excellent. Negative - the room we had, a garden view room was tiny, very tired with heating, air con and towel rail not working and due to trees was very dark. Carpet worn and dirty I have seen better and bigger rooms in Premier Inns at a fraction of cost. We did talk to reception who offered another room for one night but we would have to move back next day. Overall impression of hotel was lovely in a great location, just in need of an update which even the staff kept talking about for later this year or next

This is not worth the value I have paid for a hotel for one night. The rooms are too small and did not have a lake view as promised.

I recently stayed at this hotel called The Belsfield Hotel and overall had a pleasant experience, with some notable highlights and a few areas for improvement. Positives: • The location is fantastic, perfectly situated for exploring the area. • The views from the room were stunning and really enhanced the stay. • The food was excellent, with a great variety and quality at both dinner and breakfast. • Breakfast in particular was a standout — fresh, well-prepared, and generous. • The staff’s hospitality was warm, friendly, and professional; they truly made us feel welcome from the moment we arrived. • The cleanliness of the room and hotel facilities was impeccable. NEGATIVES & Areas for improvement: • Unfortunately, the elevator/lift wasn’t working properly during our stay, which was inconvenient. • The biggest issue, however, was the extremely high temperature in the room at night. Despite opening the window, the room remained uncomfortably hot and stuffy, making it impossible to sleep. It wasn’t due to warm weather outside — rather, it seemed the central heating was excessive with no way to adjust it in the room. Suggestion: I strongly recommend that the hotel addresses the temperature control issue. If the heating system can’t be moderated for individual rooms, then air conditioning or a cooling system should be installed to ensure guest comfort, especially at night.

Visit didn’t start well. Problem with dinner said we could just go into the restaurant not needing to book. After spending time on the terrace when we went for a table we were turned away (party of 6, one using a walking aid). Saying not enough staff. Only after complaining were we accommodated in the Brassiere and did then have a very nice attentive waitress. A few other niggles they ran out of Prosecco and when we asked for decaffeinates coffee at the first breakfast we were told they didn’t have any, but then told,after we complained, that they had found some. Place sees to be struggling from tired decor and lack of staff. Beautiful terrace and view over the lake

Great stay at The Belsfield in Windermere. Rooms were lovely, staff so helpful made the stay so enjoyable. Special thanks to Ashley at reception. Really good location. Food in the restaurant was delicious. Parking was so easy. Would definitely recommend and will stay again.

On arrival, hotel was beautiful from the outside. Very clean reception/bar and restaurant area. We were very pleased and excited! Just to add, £15 parking for guests for a 24 hour period, which we knew about and fair for the area. Safe car park. Great location, walked into Windermere in the evening and had some tea out. 10/10 for location. The fire alarm sounded at 3:00am, which wasn’t an issue as this is health and safety, and as a suspected fire we evacuated straight away. Everyone was gathered in the car park and reception area, there was no communication from staff in hi-vis, they just allowed us back in still with alarm sounding. I got an update from other guests to inform us they were still looking for the cause of the alarm?? Information appeared to be given to guests sat in reception, those in the car park was left to find out themselves. The walls are paper thin, at 0600 we were woken to next doors shower on, upstairs floorboards & the neighbours talking getting ready for breakfast. Breakfast was lovely, beautiful room and good service. Nice view from the window. Got back up to the room after having breakfast, and thought we’d have a nice coffee looking out of our lake view room. A maintenance man was in the room next door, with his tool box outside our door, drilling, knocking, making all sounds. Check out is 11am, so please, if you want a nice chill out morning this hotel isn’t for you.

Lack of staff meant service was poor. Took 30 minutes for a cup of tea to be served when we arrived. Similar deal with breakfast where it took over 40 minutes to deliver hot breakfast and the items on the plate did not match the menu. This was all whilst the restaurant was not busy. As for the room, there was an AC unit which didn’t work and when we asked reception about it, we were told this was not included in our room. Strange for a £200+ a night room but the least of the problems really. In the room, there were stains on the skirting boards from where previous tenants had missed the bins with their tea bags and they had not been cleaned. When we requested our room be serviced, we returned to an untouched room at 3.30pm. When we raised this issue, we returned after dinner to an unmade bed and still dirty cups in the room. Only services completed were change of towel and empty bin. Overall, very poor for the price.

What stood out for us was the friendliness of the staff, each and every one of them. We’d booked a double room but were upgraded to a lake view room which was incredible.

Very nice hotel in an excellent location. The staff overall were very good with the star being Philip in the lobby. Simply excellent customer service all the time - a real credit to the hotel.

The location of the hotel is great, the breakfast was very poor and the attitude of the lady serving was disgusting..

This hotel is perfectly situated for anyone coming by public transport. Excellent bus and taxi service from train station to hotel. Even though our visit coensided with the refurbishment it didn't affect our stay. The staff were really friendly especially Ashley on reception who gave us a lot of advice on different places to visit and nothing was too much trouble a very valued member of staff also giacomo and mosses and jorden were really pleasant and friendly. We will definitely be visiting this hotel again.

Very comfortable garden room and amazing staff particularly Charlie who came out to our car greeting us on arrival,carrying in our luggage and telling us the history of the building.First class.

Good staff and location

An excellent property in all aspects, made even better by its convenient location. Guests can stroll down a private lawn to access starting points for bus and boat travel around Lake Windermere. It's not the most luxurious place I've stayed in the Lakes, but the location more than compensates. Highly recommended. I would happily stay here again.

We booked here using our Tesco vouchers, as a little ‘minimoon’! We booked a standard room but messaged the hotel to explain we’d be married two days before coming and if they could do anything that’d be great. We got an upgrade to a lake view suit which was fantastic. The best part of this hotel is the staff. They were amazing! So attentive, friendly and helpful. The location is superb as a base or for exploring Windermere! The restaurant is pricey but food was delicious. They only have an all day menu available at the moment which was a little up market for someone looking for a snack. Breakfast is buffet style and all delicious. You could choose from an array of food, full fry up to continental. There are no leisure facilities ie a pool which I think would really make the hotel. We had a free drink voucher each night as we didn’t have housekeeping which was a lovely touch. Overall, would highly recommend and return!

The hotel was bright and fresh and with easy access to the town and restaurants. Staff were very friendly. The weather unfortunately was not great but still had a great lake view. Great breakfast.

I do not understand how this hotel maintains a 4 Star rating. The room was very small, no Aircon, no fridge, not even tissue in the bathroom. The rooms were very expensive and they charged an extra 15 Pounds per night for parking. Yes, the view was lovely from the dining room windows, but not from our room. Breakfast was always a comedy of errors. The staff did not seem to prepare for breakfast ahead of time, waiting until things stopped working (the coffee machine) or ran out before refilling. The English breakfast was served with grossly over cooked eggs, bacon and sausages. Eggs Benidict was served with cold ham and Bearnaise sauce was cold and made from a packet and poached eggs were cooked as hard as rocks. Definitely some work to be done with kitchen staff training and quality. One evening I went to the bar. I asked to have a cocktail from their menu, it seemed as if I was the first person this season to ask for one. It took over 1/2 an hour to make it, at least two people were involved and the end result was one of the worst tasting cocktails I have ever had. To end on a high note, we had beautiful weather and wonderful meals in restaurants in Bowness and Windermere (not in the Belsfield). I will return to the Lake District in the future, but the Belsfield Hotel will not be in my plans.

Breakfast was poor, both service and food. Had to ask three times for a cup of tea, full English breakfast cold, they said they wore re heat, which they do, no thought of replacing. The egg was dry as were the beans, hash brown and black pudding. I asked for another runny yolk, fried egg and got a solid cold poached egg. Very poor.

Great location overlooking the lake. Stayed here a few times now. Breakfast is top notch and the staff serving you in the restaurant are very attentive.

The Belsfield is a perfectly located hotel in the heart of picturesque Boweness Food was a little limited and staff seemed somewhat stretched Breakfast wasn’t up to the standard expected again being a bit limited with staff struggling to give the service expected Overall nice hotel stay but food offering could be improved, a little on the pricey student too

Nice room with great views, Breakfast was terrible cold and inedible. The most expensive hotel on our 11 day trip and the worst breakfast, didn't even both on our 2nd day. This needs a serious review. Staff were great location brilliant room nice, don't waste time or money on breakfast.

Beautiful hotel with great views of the lake. Both dinner and breakfast were delicious. Hotel provided us with a surprise free drink from the bar. Location is the best with on site car parking. Highly recommended.

The hotel is very tired and need a lot of money spending to bring it up to date. The food was pub grub as opposed to fine dining which was always available at the hotel. Very poor .

The hotel called on the morning of our stay and offered us a complimentary upgrade to a lake view, very nice! On arrival and very nice check in experience. When we returned later in the day to our room, noticed no shampoo or shower gel, which we would have expected for £175 per night. Breakfast was ok, the usual Buffett, but the area where to food was located was very cramped, too much in one area. Overall the service was average after the check-in.
