Rothay Garden by Harbour Hotels

On arrival the hotel looked great, friedly staff on the desk. Overall we had a lovely stay. We had two rooms and the double overlooking the river behind was idyllic. Downsides: * Noise from the room above - the residents weren't crashing about but you could hear every footstep, loudly when they were in the bathroom. * Spa - whilst a lovely pool overlooking the scenery, both the aromatherapy room and sauna were out of order during our stay. * Surprised a little that residents were charged for parking although in retrospect can see "Self parking fee" (what other type of parking is there?) in the property info.

Very nice hotel at the edge of Grasmere village with lovely gardens. Has a spa but we didn’t use it. Disappointing that you have to pay an extra £10 per night parking. We didn’t eat evening meal in the hotel but breakfast was good.

Beautiful hotel with magnificent gardens and lovely spa. Staff were all very friendly and the food was delicious.

The hotel is set in beautiful grounds, and has a beautiful, warm interior. We received a lovely warm welcome from reception. Our room was immaculate and has everything we needed, including a lovely balcony looking out into the well maintained gardens. The spa is small but very nice and has stunning views from the hydro pool. The spa does need a little TLC in terms of the rusty vents above the pool, and the steam room wasn't working. Overall a really nice spa, and free for guests to use, which isn't always the case at some hotels. Our only gripe was the quality of some of the food we were served for our evening meal, and the time it took. We were also charged £10 to park our car in the hotel grounds.

Disappointed with room. Located in roof with small windows , no balcony Spa facilities very poor, aromatherapy steam room and hydro pool not working !!

Stunning hotel with fantastic facilities we loved the spa and had a lovely drink outdoors in the sun afterwards where bar service is available at the touch of a button, breakfast had many options including gluten free and was delicious.

Always a lovely stay at this hotel; small and personal with very attentive staff. The spa is a great addition and the grounds are lovely. The restaurant menu is limited for vegetarians and this is my only critique, other than the surcharge for parking which felt a little like an upsell. Nonetheless, I will be back!

Perfect location just on the edge of the centre of Grasmere (a short stroll), next to the river and a beautiful backdrop. Classic room was small but cosy, with character and a nice large bathroom. The view from the room could have been better as you looked out on the road, although it was nice to see the hills in the distance. Some hotel storage containers immediately below detracted from the view. The hotel public areas were nicely furnished. The highlight was the marvellous spa facility, which is an 'outhouse' with a backdrop to the hills and a lovely outdoor space for relaxing whilst looking on to the well maintained gardens. It was also nice to be able to get a drink from the bar to sit outside the spa. Shame the aromatherapy room wasn't functioning. Our main dissapointment with the hotel was breakfast - the service was frustrating - twice we asked for a particular table (that were available) and was told no - in one case because the table was for three people (there were two of us) and in the other case it was because the table was 'not made up' (which it subsequently was for guests who sat down shortly after) - not what you expect from a 4 star hotel. As for the food - the continental range could be better and my wife struggled with the runny eggs (arguably personal preference). We just didnt feel the breakfast/service was quite up to the standard you would expect for this type of property. Despite this, we enjoyed our stay at Rothay Garden in beautiful Grasmere!

We had free upgrade room 16 . Room had nice view of the garden from the balcony. The room was a bit tired.furniture had a few knocks and the bathroom had mold on bath and tiles. Nice touch with free gin in the room. The staff very friendly but on the Sunday needed extra staff. The spa was nice and clean. The restaurant was nice and staff good service. Breakfast was good. Just disappointed you have to pay for car parking

First time stay and we loved Grasmere. Problems in the restaurant on the first two of our four night stay. We dined out the other 2. Room size, location and setting excellent and staff were great. But, oh dear! The cleanliness!! Towels and linen were good but room doors and skirtings etc were grubby and worn. We are aware that Harbour Hotels have just taken over and that a refurb is about to get under way, so I am sure the shortfalls will be addressed.

Overall it was a brilliant stay. The bed was extremely comfortable and spacious, loved having two balconies overlooking the river and the use of the spa was great. Also included lovely toiletries. Negatives: cobwebs over the bed andRound the hotel

The ‘deluxe’ room was not what we expected. We had issues to be sorted from the minute we arrived in our room. Needed to ask for an extra table lamp in order to use the desk in a dark corner. Toilet was permanently flushing causing noise and wasting water. Television needed connecting properly so no television for our first evening. Bathroom was very grubby. Wash hand basin tap came off showering the whole bathroom. Noise during night sounding like a pump which disturbed our sleep. Finally, not impressed with breakfasts. Had to ask for bananas each day. Had to ask for honey. Choices were very limited.

We were upgraded to a better room so that was really nice. Room up on 2nd floor and without a lift just as well we could carry our own luggage. Room very comfortable, although we noticed that the bathroom radiator didn't work. Shower excellent. All very clean with nice tea/coffee making facilities. Breakfast very good with a good variety of choices. We ate in the restaurant in the evening once. Food nicely prepared and served well. Our biggest gripe is having to pay to park in the hotel car park. This is the first time we've encountered this and were very surprised by this. Additionally they charge Service Charge on every drink or meal. It didn't matter to us, but we overheard a few complaints about this.

Bathroom a bit shabby and tired door paint poor some mould above bathroom mirror. Disapointed with car parking charge for not booking directly with the hotel. Supprised at the addation cost of a decaff cappuccino "upgrade"at breakfast. Hotel could not make a mocha as it was not on the drinks menu

Lovely stay at Rothay Garden. The hotel is well maintained with lovely grounds, the room was clean and with a very good shower. But what really stood out was the great service, with very courteous staff. Excellent place to stay in Grasmere

Firstly this is our go to hotel in the Lakes. Been using this hotel for over four years now. As usual the staff are great throughout the hotel. The food at breakfast and dinner were excellent. Unusual for the UK I know but we had two days of sunny hot weather. We were allocated the on site wooden lodge adjacent to the Spa. Unfortunately the lodges do not have aircon, and being in the wooded garden we couldn't open the windows due to flying insects. Using a single fan in the bedroom didnt help. Maybe insect devices are needed along with aircon units. Ps. The spa was great and included in the roon cost.

Nice spacious lodge with comfortable beds - although connected to another and noisy when neighbours watching tv, in bathroomnetc. Bad service and quite rude staff on check in sadly. Hotels.com confirmed breakfast included on chat but hotel said it wasn't - went up the road to the swan for breakfast and dinner which was fabulous with friendly service. Good location for grasmere though - although even as resident parking charge was £10!

This was a big birthday treat, and I was a bit underwhelmed. The hotel itself was lovely, set in its own lush grounds next to the river. The room was a bit disappointing - not enough 'little touches' to make it feel special. It felt a bit dated in parts, in need of a bit of tlc. The first thing we noticed was just how dark it was. The architecture plays a large part in this, but not helped by the furniture being very dark wood as well. I suspect the room would get very hot as there's no A/C. The bathroom was very ordinary for a posh hotel. The toilet was difficult to flush and there was a lot of evidence of repairs and patching. The bath was very deep and wide, but a bit short so not somewhere to laze in. The mirrors weren't heated so impossible to use them after a shower for shaving etc. In the room, a mini fridge would have been nice so we could have had fresh milk rather than UHT. The TV was disappointing: very small by modern standards and not Freeview so a lot of the channels didn't work. We didn't eat in the restaurant other than breakfast, which was very good. There was no option in the evening to have a bar snack. The bar didn't even sell crisps. A Pimms and Rum/Coke came to £27 so that was the one and only drink we had. The spa was OK. The hydropool was very noisy in operation so not that relaxing. The sauna was fine, as were the heated loungers, but the steam room didn't seem to be working. So, a relaxing couple of nights but nothing that made us feel special.

We were staying for 5 nights at the Rothay Hotel. It is a lovely hotel in a wonderful setting. However, the addition of a daily parking charge at the time we checked in was a shock. (Yes- I know, it was probably buried in the T & C's).To make matters worse, when I asked about the charge I was told it only applies to those who book via third party booking platforms. But not to those people who book direct! This is clearly a discriminatory practice, and the hotel passing on the platforms booking fee by charging it to the end customer, effectively penalising us. On the plus side the breakfasts were very good and served to your table by friendly, pleasant staff. Our room 24, currently has the world's smallest TV. About 24 inches. I didn't think they still made them that small. The Spa was a nice plus. The best time to use it is mid-afternoon, when the other guests are out.

I was firstly offered a very noisy room. Then when I asked they gave a room which was better but had slanting ceilings. Property is nice but provided you get a good room. It matters.

We had a really lovely stay for 2 nights at Rothay Garden. We booked dinner on the first night which was high quality. The views over the garden from the restaurant were really relaxing. We booked a luxury room which was really clean and spacious and had a terrace.

As a regular in the Lake District, my husband and I decided to stay at Rothay Gardens. Check in was functional but not particularly welcoming. Not informed of vip credit until departure. The room was clean and tidy, furniture tired and the room was small. I would suggest that the compulsory service charge is just put in the price of drinks and food. Overall, a functional stay, but would stay elsewhere in the future. were I felt my stay was better value and customer service was of a greater standard

Great room and lovely spa. However one incredibly rude staff in the restaurant that made you feel like asking any question was insulting. For how expensive it is you don’t expect to be treated like that!

A lovely place, my parents had a lovely stay. Staff were rude to me on the phone when I called to send something to the room. Not what I expected. But my parents did enjoy their stay.

The staff make this hotel somewhere you will want to return to. Very friendly, nothing is too much trouble. The hotel is clean, modern and comfortable. We will definitely be returning. Special mention to the reception lady who checked us in and the tall gentleman who served our breakfast, who both went above and beyond.

The staff team were amazing, all of them, from the welcome to recommendations and ideas for things to do and how to get there. The room was fantastic and the breakfast perfect.

What a lovely place , Staff are very professional and friendly as well as very accommodating when we need a work area to work from home . Will be back for sure !

Beautiful quiet property with lovely, friendly staff. The evening meal and breakfast were superb. The room was large, very comfortable and had a lovely patio overlooking the river. The hotel grounds were immaculate and had beautiful views of the hills. It was an easy walk into the town and there were lots of great walks from the door.

Wonderful 3 night stay in a stunning location with beautiful views. Really comfy clean room, great quality food (very generous breakfast). The staff were without exception warm and friendly and nothing was too much trouble. Beautiful gardens and the spa is a nice extra. Walkable to the gorgeous village of Grasmere. One word of warning for anyone with mobility issues - most of the rooms are 1st floor and there’s no lift. Would definitely stay here again and no hesitation in recommending.

This is a fabulous hotel! Beautiful location, so convenient to go anywhere in the Lake District. You can walk up the road to the shops and restaurants of Grasmere. The hotel restaurant is also excellent and the staff are so friendly. Our room was lovely and spacious, and very clean and comfortable. I would definitely stay at the Rothay Garden again and would recommend it to anyone travelling to the Lake District.

Loved the fact the property was a short walk from village centre and alao the trickle of the stream outside our room. Food in the evening meal was fantastic, with the dining area giving lovely view of the garden

Nice stay in well located hotel. Staff were friendly and efficient. Room was clean and adequately spacious with a small balcony. Enjoyed the lovely wee spa. Thought the parking charge for residents was an unnecessary at the price but otherwise very happy with everything. Breakfast was good too.

Good hotel in great location for walking/cycling. Great breakfast choice ,reasonable evening meal as well but small portions. The only thing that really disappoints is they add gratuity to each drink you buy & to the evening meal…65p & 7.50 respectively. They have also started to charge £10 car parking.

Fantastic location with amazing views, good access to the SPA, friendly, helpful staff and dinner was excellent!

We have absolutely loved our stay. The area is beautiful, the hotel is quiet, pretty and boasts amazing views of the area from all Points of the hotel. Dinner was worth having here as the food is great. We’ve loved everything about this place. We didn’t get time to use the spa but it looked lovely Would highly recommend

Hotel is lovely and the spa is fab, great location and the staff were lovely. The food was mostly good however the portion size for our evening meal was a joke, absolutely tiny, and the breakfast wasn’t great either, the sausages and bacon had obviously been pre-cooked and hanging around for a while and dried out. The music in the restaurant was absolutely awful, terrible covers of songs. In short, I would definitely stay at the hotel again but won’t eat at the restaurant again sunless they improve it. The jumble room down the road was incredible

We have been using Rothay Gardens for years, so we were really looking forward to our next break. We booked the luxury room with spectacular views of the Lake District from the balcony. We were given a room on the ground floor with patio, see photos below. Disappointed. We also booked & payed for breakfast & evening meal for two nights. While ordering our evening meal we were informed that sides were extra. We decided to share a portion of carrots & potatoes. This came & the portions were tiny , one chopped up carrot & one potato, all for the princely price of £6 each, so £12 for tiny sides. To top this off, Rothay now charge £10 a night for parking. It feels like the hotel is coming up with ideas to screw more money out of the residents. Why not just add this to the overall price when booking?? Last whinge, the corridor leading to the room smelt damp, so not really a luxury experience. The reception staff didn’t want to know when we complained & we sent a letter of complaint to the manager but two weeks on with no response. This new direction the management are taking is disappointing & for that reason we will, with regret, not be using this hotel again. 👉

Great location and amenities, strange breakfast, peas with poached eggs? We’ve been a few times now and there has been a recent change of hands. Highly recommended, but please look at the breakfast menu!
