Great location, beautiful old building with history, rooms with character and lots of space. Gowns provided for spa use. Pool towels provided. Great pool, water was nice and cool and not heavily chlorinated. Hot tub was hot! Bar had a bit of a vibe in it (there were people there!). Friendly bar staff (Chris and Reilly). Lots of free parking out front and behind. Generally a fab place to stay.

The hotel is exceptionally beautiful. The staff is efficient if not super friendly. We enjoyed the pool and whirlpool, though were sad that our second day there it was closed for maintenance. The location is great as well. Highly recommend.

Beautiful historic hotel right downtown. Great pool area, comfortable beds and excellent hospitality from the front desk. I will definitely recommend this hotel to others and stay here again in the future!

Breakfast not included. Pool and jacuzzi, were wonderful! No access to a microwave but the restaurant that is inside the hotel plated up leftovers on real plates, silverware, and linen. And refused any kind of a tip. Staff went above and beyond!

Historic building that seems to be in fair condition, but cleanliness could be improved. Pool and hot tub had visible and considerable amounts of dirt settled at the bottom, so we were unable to use those. The bed quilt had a spill or stain of some kind that we didn’t notice until the morning of checkout. We didn’t have any drinks in the bedroom so it definitely was there before we got there. Made me call into question whether bedding had been changed for us. The thermostat didn’t work properly. Our key cards were deactivated almost an hour prior to checkout time. Both times we ate at the restaurant we were charged for items we didn’t order. For $300+ per night you just expect better. Housekeeping staff in the hallway were audibly complaining about their job and how “sick of this place” they are.

Unfortunately I have to give a poor rating even though there were great things about our stay like the pleasant check-in, friendly staff, fun bar, and great brunch. So why the poor rating? When we turned down our bedding for the night, there was a drizzle of what looked like diarrhea down the sheet. I immediately called the front desk and they moved us to another room but we had to pack up all of our stuff at midnight and move which was terribly inconvenient. A housekeeping slip like this is simply unacceptable. It wasn’t a small “mark” that could maybe be overlooked. It was at least twelve inches long and took up quite a bit of surface space.

I was so looking forward to staying in such a historic place. The lobby is beautiful. I got to my room and the musty smell was overwhelming and no matter how much I ran the AC it did not improve. By morning my eyes were wo itchy and red. The furniture and bed are in need of upgrades. The mattress sagged, bed was clean though. Bathroom floor was sticky and my shoes left footprints everywhere. No bottle of water in the room, which I would expect in a hotel room at that expense. Overall I was disappointed.

The hotel is beautiful. The walls are paper thin. We asked for a room higher up and away from the elevator. Rooms start on floor 2. We were on floor 3 of 8 and got the room right next to the elevator, nice. There was a wedding that night so we could hear the bass from the music till 1AM, you could hear all the traffic from the street, everyone getting on and off the elevator, and the wonderful ice machine was also right outside our door. If your a light sleeper like I am, you won't get much sleep. As I said in the beginning, the hotel itself is beautiful. The rooms are beautiful. The staff is very friendly.

1) unclear where to pull up/unload luggage after 4 hour drive. 2) room was freezing and the thermostat, with instructions printed under it, did not work. Had to call and they adjusted the temp from some central location. 3) no free breakfast. 4) older, very classy hotel but clearly not staffed as it was in the old days. Existing staff were, however, friendly and helpful.

Our room was on the 4th floor. Windows could open. One storm window was missing. Unable to sleep much that night. People in bar spilling out onto street below until 2am. Because of the missing storm window, people talking and yelling sounded like right outside our window. Disappointed no one checked windows as a safety precaution. Window sill had substantial debris. Bathroom doors difficult to open /close. Does not function as bathroom doors are suppose to function (keeping noise in and out. Thermostat difficult to regulate. Could not adjust down or up. Food in Caroline’s Restaurant was good! Our food server, Alyssa R, was attentive, personable, offered suggestions and generally overall just took good care of us! She was the highlight of our stay; which unfortunately was shortened by a day because when we asked to be moved, the front desk individual informed us the hotel completely full. So we chose to leave. Since our room was booked through Expedia, we needed to contact them to arrange the cancelation and subsequent refund to credit card. The desk individual helped us navigate the initial maize. I was able to speak directly to Expedia and resolved matter. However, I don’t believe we would stay here again and may not recommend to others.

We were given a room with no windows. It was above the ballroom where a wedding reception was in full swing. There was no soundproofing in the room, they could have just put our bed on the dance floor.

We had a very pleasant stay at Hotel Julien. Our room was very clean and the staff was friendly and helpful. Caroline’s, the restaurant inside the hotel, serves wonderful food which is super convenient. The only negative would be the street noise. Both nights we stayed, it was pretty boisterous outside which woke us up. Next time we stay, we will request the side that faces the parking lot instead. Would definitely stay here again.

Keys kept not working. Four times. Had to go to front desk to get new ones. Both on the room and at the pool. Staff hardly cared and was not empathetic at all. Hotel starting to look shabby and beat up. This place has so much potential but appears to be going down hill sadly.

After taking a shower, I discovered that the hair dryer was broken. I had to go downstairs with wet hair to request a new one. The clerk at the front desk was on the phone and did not even attempt to acknowledge me with eye contact to let me know she was aware that I was there. When she did get off the phone, she seemed annoyed that she had to go and find a working hair dryer for me. There was no apologies for the inconvenience. The hotel was nice and the room was comfortable. I would stay here again but would hope that they have a friendlier person with good customer skills greeting and servicing the guests.

When we were to check in the room wasnt ready. We waited until 4 pm to get into our room scheduled for 3pm. Hotel room was very small and old like an efficiency apartment when it was an upgraded room on the 8th floor. The view was great. Lots of things within walking distance.

Check in was 3pm, we didn't get into our room until after 4:30 and it wasn't even the room that we booked. It was a double bed and it was extremely uncomfortable. The bartender RJ was amazing to make up for the inconvenience.

I loved staying here. I was in town to watch the March Madness basketball games at Diamond Joe's Casino. The hotel has an amazing location downtown Dubuque. The hotel is walking distance to some great bars and restaurants downtown. It also is an easy walk to Diamond Joe's Casino. My room was great. I will forsure stay here again.

I had a great room with a good view of the river. The downtown location is perfect and Caroline's restaurant had good food for a good price. The only hitch was there is no coffee available until after 7AM. That little machine in the room doesn't count. I'll be back.

This is a lovely old hotel ( opened in 1914 ? ) but of course Is completely updated. Located in the old downtown area it is surrounded by restaurants, shops and an excellent museum. Parking is quite convenient, either across the street or behind the hotel.

We made reservations for the Sunday brunch, which was part of the experience for us. It was extremely disappointing. We met our daughter and waited over 20 minutes before she got up and asked if we were going to get a server. Although servers were standing about 10 feet away from us visiting. I tried to Buy a bottle of champagne, but it took several people to figure out if it was even possible. The buffet itself was very disappointing. It was advertised as an omelette station, and there was nothing close to an omelette station there a pan of scrambled eggs. Few things to choose from and they advertise a carving station where there was a small piece of pork with nobody ever there to carve it. They were happy to take our hundred dollars plus for the check but just said that there was a kitchen problem. The kitchen wasn’t responsible for getting us a glass of water after having waited for over 20 minutes. Very disappointing.
