Renaissance Portsmouth-Norfolk Waterfront Hotel

Under renovations. Very limited food selection at restaurant on site, but waitress was very nice. Parking entry and deck was tight. Long walks from parking to front desk and then to elevator. The gentleman greeting you were kind. The staff at the desk were not as friendly. Pool floors were slick and dangerous. Rooms did not have microwave, fridge was so low your food/drinks did not get cold, ac did not get below 72, bathroom door was off hinges and wouldn't close, and tv remotes did not work. I would expect more for the $ and from renaissance.

We had no idea the entire main floor of the hotel was being remodeled. There was dirt and debris everywhere. No common areas were available in the restaurant was half the size where they makeshift bar. We were also not able to use the pool. We were charged the same price as if everything was up and running as normal.

The elevator to the parking deck was very dirty.

Chosen for the pool, it was freezing and the jacuzzi was closed.

The pool wasn’t available, wish we were told prior to booking and No valet was on duty even though a sign was posted stating valet parking….

Check in time is 4pm. Our room was not ready until 7:15pm which made for a grumpy family after a long day traveling. We ended up sitting outside for a long time waiting since we had no place else to go. Apparently, they were short staffed, we were not told exactly why the room wasn't ready. The place is under construction, and seemed dirty in the lobby and hallway leading to the elevators. The parking garage elevator and stairwell both smelled horribly and we literally had to hold our breath.

Parking is inconvenient, its a long walk from the garage to the lobby, then even further to your room. Food is average. The bar service is mediocre. Overall, it is a beautiful place, but the service did not meet my expectations

Pool was disgusting

Room was very clean and staff was friendly. The parking situation is horrible because you can only access the hotel one way. And the parking garage is set up strange.

Stay was great except for the beds. They were so uncomfortable that we could not sleep. They were listed as queens but were not they were more like doubles. You could feel the springs when you laid down. Room would not stay cool at night either. Shower was amazing! Service in the bar was adequate very slow though. Restaurant part was not open when we stayed.

Great area with nice views of river. Older hotel that could use a little TLC (ie bath tile was moldy) but otherwise had a nice stay. Staff was great.

The a/c was broken. When we went to use the towels there were cockroaches.

Bathroom needed a deep clean, mold growing in shower. Still a nice hotel.

Refrigerator wouldn’t work. Couldn’t hear the TV with volume on 100. Air conditioning wouldn’t work (All 3 of these were fixed by the maintenance crew). Also found out that the A/C cuts off after 2 hours of no movement in room! I don’t move while sleeping. Shower faucet is broken. Every elevator is dirty including the parking deck elevator. Old dirty Sock and heavy dust and cobwebs beside bed. (told two separate employees and they did nothing, it's probably still there) Saw a roach run on the floor but got away before we could kill it. On 2nd day there: No towels No washcloths No toilet paper (had to use toilet in lobby downstairs) It took 4 times going to the front desk to get anyone to help. The last time was after 8 pm after being told there would be someone there shortly. This started in the early morning! The last time I would not leave until I personally saw the desk clerk call to housekeeping in front of me. Was no longer settling for “I’ll call the right away”. When housekeeping showed up, she could only give us one towel because she said the cage was locked and no one there with a key. She tried to help but couldn't. We have stayed there many times over the years and have always been satisfied. Bottomline, new management is horrible and tries to cut to many corners trying to save a dollar. We will never go back. 3rd day: housekeeping was not cleaning our room, so we went and found housekeeper and gave her large tip just so we could get the basics done.

The 4th floor hallway smelled horribly, it smelled of mold & mildew causing the room to smell the same. There was 1 air purifier running in the hallway but I fear it wasn’t enough to get the job done. The bedding, specifically the pillows, smelled of vomit & feces. Worst experience ever at this hotel. I’ve stayed previous times before & had a wonderful experience. This time it felt like a “luxury” truck stop motel. Extremely disappointed.

First and foremost the fire alarm went off at 7am for several min, site is also making improvements so construction I can deal with that but the floors were very dirty in the room lots of dust around and under everything and the toilet seat was literally barely on the the toilet.

I use to come here quite often. Haven't been in some years. Place isn't the same. A string of hair was in the corner of the sink, which is unacceptable. They asked for my request but didn't honor it, and it was a simple request. Sad to say that will be/was my last time there.

Although there was a lot of construction going on inside the hotel, it was clean and quiet. Customer service was great, all staff were friendly. The rooms were clean and comfortable.

The room smelt like bowel and water in bathroom dripped all night. Housekeeping only took dirty towel didn't replace towels and pulled cover up on bed . Didnt vacuum or fold bed sheet to attempt to care about cleaning the bed properly.

Our family stayed at the Renaissance Portsmouth-Norfolk this past weekend. The hotel was clean, and the rooms were very comfortable. The Staff were very helpful and respectful, especially in the restaurant area and the bellhop. I will definitely stay at the Renaissance if I visit the area again! Keep up the good work!

Need new AC my room on the 14th floor was warm the whole time

Internet was out during my stay, and the room was a lot smaller than was expected.

Very disappointed. The rooms do not have microwaves. The microwave’s are located on select floor, not very convenient . In My room, none of the USB charging ports work. When you enter the main area of the room, there are no light switches. You have to walk around turning on lamps individually. Parking is less than ideal. It’s a long walk from the garage to the front desk and an even longer walk to your rooms. So if you have any disabilities that make it difficult for you to walk long distances, don’t stay here. This is my first and last stay at this facility.

I got to the hotel at 2 PM and my room was not ready yet - no big deal as check in was at 4, but all of my friends were able to get into their rooms earlier than that (they checked in at 12:45-1:30). I ended up getting back to the hotel at 8:30 to check in and I tried to park in the garage but the machine wouldn’t give me a ticket so I couldn’t get in and had to park across the street. All of my friends received tickets for free brunch but I didn’t - I didn’t even realize until I got to my room or I would have asked. The rooms look clean and the hotel has been updated a bit so it looked nice. I then got into the room at 8:45 and there isn’t any hand soap. I have my 3 month old with me so I didn’t even bother calling the front desk because I didn’t want to wake her up, but it wasn’t a great experience. Then around 2:30 AM the people in the room next door came back to their room and it woke me up - not because they were being loud, it was just the acoustics of the room. They were speaking in a normal tone but I was certain they had to be right outside of my door. I went to check and they weren’t there. I realized they were in their own room, but I could hear every word they said. I know the hotel can’t necessarily help this especially when it’s an older hotel, but it seems like an easy fix to not put in people in rooms directly next to each other when the hotel was clearly not incredibly busy.

Great location and views of the river. But the room was located above the large air conditioning units which made our room very noisy while trying to sleep

We booked here hoping to get a really good rest before our 18 hour drive home the next morning. The bed and pillows were comfortable but there was a loud fan outside our window that made a terrible squeaking/screeching noise constantly. We each only got a few hours sleep because of this. Not sure how far away thos noise could be heard from but I imagine the room below ours is even worse since the fan is closer to that level. These rooms should not be used until the dan is fixed!

The AC was not working in my room. Front desk said they would send someone to look at it. No one showed up. Waited several hours and called back to find out that facilities staff had left and went home. New front desk staff member said they’d try to get us a new room or a fan, and that he would call me back to let me know. No return call was made, no fan, and no room exchange. The room was hot, humid, and muggy. It was uncomfortable and staff didn’t seem to be concerned at all. Communication and general concern was non-existent. Called the manager the next morning. He was very apologetic but stated that he couldn’t refund my stay but instead would give me marriott points. Still have not received those! Highly disappointed in the staff, the zero resolution to malfunctioning air conditioning, and my overall stay here :( We have stayed here in the past with no issues but will for sure will be staying at a different hotel next time we come to Portsmouth Va.

Room was clean & comfortable. The food in the restaurant at dinner was delicious and the breakfast buffet was as well. The view from all rooms was absolutely beautiful, overlooking the Elizabeth River and the hotels on the water in Norfolk. At night they're all lit with neon lights and look magical.

Check in was at 4pm however due to staffing, etc, I wasn’t checked in until 6:30pm. And that was after calling the front desk and informing them about a clean room that I found for myself. Also, because I booked through Expedia, they said they couldn’t give me any discount for the serious inconvenience (late check in made me late for an event I was attending). So, not only didn’t I get compensation for my inconvenience, I may now stop using Expedia due to no way of correcting negative hotel experiences…

Dominic, Mr. Preston(Bellsman) the front desk staff, security and restaurant hospitality were amazing 10/10 suggest everyone to stay here!

Could not check in and get a room unttil 6:45 pm. Absolutely ridiculous and unacceptable. Then no wash cloths and bathmat in room and only 2 towels. It took at least an hour and a half to get those delivered.Hotel is either grossly understaffed or incompetently managed or both. Hardly worth paying $234.00 a night for a third rate property under extensive renovation. A very pitiful representative of thearriott Rennaissance brand.

The bathroom sink drain was extremely slow, washing your hands for 20 seconds and there the bowl is half full, takes about 15 minutes to drain. One of the two beds did not have a flat sheet, so just a comforter to sleep under. Called the front dest upon check in for this and was told i was mistaken. We were extremely tired, it was late and i just tried to sleep. The next day our family was out doing our thing, a tip was let on the table for housekeeping wirh a note asking for the additional sheet. When we returned to our room at 9 pm our room had not been cleaned which meant no clean dry towels ethier. I called the front desk explaining and asked for towels, was told they would be brought up shortly. Nothing at 10, called and was told it would be an hour, asked if i could come down and get some and was told they weren't available at the desk. At 11 i called again and was told i couldn't get towels until after midnight. I wouldn't ever book this hotel again. Should have considered the previous reviews closer prior to booking but i figured they were just dramatic complaints, i think i was wrong on that part.

Our family stayed at the Renaissance Portsmouth-Norfolk this past weekend. The hotel was clean, and the rooms were very comfortable. The Staff were very helpful and respectful, especially in the restaurant area and the bellhop. I will definitely stay at the Renaissance if I visit the area again! Keep up the good work!

The property is under some renovations but it does not affect your stay. Absolutely beautiful views from our room. We took a water taxi from Portsmouth to Norfolk. Many restaurant options that are walkable. Room was clean and just great for our two-day stay. Would absolutely stay again. Felt safe and the hotel staff was friendly, helpful and very approachable!

Wow, we were so disappointed—the hotel was under construction and we understood that, however the stairs from the parking garage were dirty and some of the lights were out. The staff was nice, the room was nice, until you looked a little closer and the bathroom fixtures were old, and the nightstand electrical outlets didn’t work. Not sure if it was because it was a holiday weekend, but we felt like we amongst street walkers and pimps. We won’t be back.

Great location and staff. Convenient location for entertainment with the family and nightlife with ferry service.

Enjoyed the restaurant, the view, the being in Historic Portsmouth district along the river. Highly recommend!

Room was not ready at 5:00pm. Staff said would receive a call when the room was ready. I called at 7:35pm and they stated the room was ready and they tried to call me. I had no missed calls from the hotel. The area around the hotel seems sketchy. Only positive was the water view from the room.

Property is adjacent to the Elizabeth River Ferry

On the waterfront. Nothing could be more relaxing or senic

Loved our stay. Excellent views. Peaceful and historic neighborhood. Nautic theme was stylistic. We were very happy.

Under construction. Room is gloomy and lack of proper light. Poor room service. Becareful about the area as it isunsafe in night. Heard gunshot on July 4th. The parking fee for garage is $15 per night without disclosing it.

Very nice hotel, good location with fantastic views, boat connection to Norfolk downtown. Breakfast was very American, so not the best for European. Missing veggies, ham, bad coffee... Cleaning in the room could be better, floors were not clean.

Amazing stay. Stayed on the 17th floor. The view of the water was great. The staff was friendly and upgraded my room. Dinner at the bar was great. Overall amazing stay.

The restaurant was not available. That was a disappointment and terrible inconvenience. The intake staff was cheerful, helpful and willing to assist.

Beautiful hotel and in hotel dining was amazing! I had the chicken wings and my boyfriend loved his crab cakes!

Hotel staff friendly and serviceable room had some issues with lights and water but stay was Preston was very helpful and friendly. Great location and Thyme Restaurant waitress. Tammy excellent and gumbo was amazing.
