BlueBay Grand Esmeralda-All Inclusive

Dress code problems: The dress code for the restaurants (non-buffet) were too strict (for a beach hotel located in a very hot climate). They required closed toe shoes on men. My husband had closed toe Crocs and they still did not permit him to enter. I was wearing a knee-length swimsuit cover up dress and was not permitted in the buffet restaurant. On-site shuttles: The golf carts are supposed to arrive at the designated blue signs every 15 minutes or so (during day) and every 20-30 at night. They did not arrive as scheduled and would only go to the Black & White bar or the beach unless you told them where to go. Often times, one of the drivers (male whose name begins with “B”) would make a an annoyed face when I told him that I need to go to my building (5)). I addressed this with the concierge after a few days and I did notice some improvement.

Beach was not open for swimming due to large amounts of seaweed.

wifi sucks; no pool bar; restaurants during night time was dark. no server walking around by the pool asking for drinks.

Bluebay Esmeralda was clean and a excellent place to stay. The pool was very big and we enjoyed our stay overall.

The staff, service, food and drinks were excellent as were the grounds. The rooms were fine and mostly clean, but some items could be updated (hard to get in tub/shower convert to shower/mirror/patio door latches/handles). Except for one night of our 7, the entertainment was fantastic. One suggestion is to work on the sound system as the music was far to loud and we were basically not able to understand a word that was said. There were not nearly enough lounge chairs by the pool/beach. Most chairs were "saved" by 7 am and if you didn't stay with them, security would remove the towels and personal belongings. To guarantee a chair you needed to be at them by 6 am....far too early for a vacation. There was plenty of space around the pool and beach to add many, many chairs. The sea water and beach was very dirty with silt and I don't know what else and cloudy/murky and not pleasant to swim in. Had we payed attention to other reviews about the chairs and sea water, we may not have chosen this resort to visit even given the excellent other aspects of the resort.

Resort is old and dated. It is clean though. There are not enough beach chairs. You need to be up before 7am if you'd like to reserve a chair. The staff are wonderful and kind.

1. Front desk stafd doesn't speak English. 2. Missing chairs in the pool, a lot of guests reserve chairs with towels because of the small amounts available. 3. Reservation for dinner was very easy as special restaurant are small. 4. Just 2 bars on the pool are with just 1 or 2 bartender, causing 20min wait for a drink. 5. In case of rain they don't have enough shuttle to move guests to the restaurants. 6. Elevator on the apartment building barely works. On my case were broken 4 days on my 7 days stay.

Room: completely outdated. There’s mold on the ceiling. Bathroom mirror is tarnished. We killed a cockroach on the last night. AC works but could be stronger - we had to leave a room key in always to keep it on. They do provide you with iron and mini blow dryer in the room. Food: you need to reserve restaurants at 0700am in concierge or through the app for the next day. Spots fill up quickly. Italian restaurant was not too good. Mexican was good! Oh, and you have to go to the buffet for dinner, you need to make a line to go in. I could not fathom that in an all inclusive. Anywhere you go they serve a lot of steak which was fresh. Pool: beautiful! Gets cleaned every night. In the morning, it is cold but by early afternoon is feels like a hot tub. No bar inside the pool which sucked because you constantly need to get out for drinks. Beach: DISGUSTING! It has seaweed everywhere and the water is brown. It also literally smells like a toilet. It was gross.we rented a jet ski and If you go deeper in, the water is actually clean and blue - so that’s an option. Drinks: watered down. You literally have to tell them to make it stronger and even then it’s straight ice. Staff: somewhat friendly. They just try to do their job and stay out of trouble. Nobody is amicable or there to conversate. We are big tippers and didn’t feel the urge to tip as often because we felt like they didn’t tailor to our needs . Like I said, the bare minimum. Overall, definitely doesn’t seem like a 4 star

Long lines at the restaurant to eat dinner. And long line at the pool bar. But the staff are great.

The outside landscaping and hotel staff friendliness was exceptional. However, the rooms and buildings are outdated & need remodeling, there were cracks in sinks and we had mold in one of our rooms. The phones weren't working (we had to use our cell phones to call front desk) in none of our rooms. The room keys stopped working for one of our rooms, we got locked out and had to.wait for maintenance to fix the lock.

Love the staff! Very very helpful. Food was actually pretty good! Other resorts i have been to were not good, so well done! Very clean rooms. Only thing that bothered me was the cold showers, but thats expected in Mexico. I am a Canadian and am a fussy person 😆 seriously though it was cold but it did not make my experience bad, it was a wonderful holiday. We love Blue Bay Esmeralda! Thank you to all staff!!

The rooms are outdated and smelled of mold covered up with Lysol. The mirrors were covered with black spots of something. The food was terrible. The front desk staff were rude.

The employees were nice and kind, but the property was extremely dirty. I have videos of roaches in my room, not only that they had a loose pitbull that had no owner wonder the resort, they had an unusual animal grabbing food from peoples plate, and raccoons as well, loose cats... like i am allergic to cats, allergic to roaches like this resort isnt 5star or 8star its a 2star. Please dont recommend this resort to no one. If i could get refunded for my room id be happy, but this stay wasnt pleasant, i barely could sleep thinking about roaches.

The lobby is not air conditioned. Dining hall has flies. Special dining needs 24-hour reservations. Our room has musty smells, the elevator in the building did not work and we had to climb flights of stairs with our luggage, and throughout our 5 days stay. Staff is not helpful. MTS transportation did not contact us in any shape or form, yet showed up at 3:00 a.m., we were not ready and they left us to hire our own private shuttle.

My room was very clean every day. Staff are very friendly and helpful. Only I didn’t like too many local people on weekends because they didn’t keep property clean and safe. During the week it was very peaceful and comfortable atmosphere in the resort.

This property is old. We stayed here 10 years a go and had a great experience, but it seems that they haven’t done any maintenance since then. This time was a horrible experience.The rooms are old and dirty. First of all when we checked in, they assigned us a room that the AC wasn’t working. The elevator for that building didn’t work, they moved us to Other room, to orher bulding that the elevator didn’t work either. So we had to carry our luggage 3 levels. They assigned us other room, nothing better than the first one but at least the AC worked. The mirrors on the bathroom werw pelling off. The seat on the toilet was pelling off as well, our toilet was leaking water and making a horrible noise when flushing. Reported it but no one care. The phone didn’t have the keys. The door handler for the balcony door wasn’t there. There were stains in all over the walls and ceiling. The elevators were out of service. The sink on the restroom was clogged. The personnel was rude or in bad mood, not friendly at all. Definitely last time we stay here.

definitely be careful for fake reviews this place had a stinch of mold immediately when entering our room. Our garden view was dead and dried up plants. The staff definitely looked me over and i’m gonna be honest I truly felt cause i was black. They would break their backs to help white guest. It actually was funny cause only when word got around my party tips well did my experience change. Definitely wouldn’t recommend nor go back. The food was on and off some good days some bad days mediocre at its best. They had me in a chokehold for 3 hours trying to sell me a 30 thousand dollar plan that only gave you discounted hotels all over. And at the end gave me a 50 dollar online gift certificate. They cleaned the rooms basically when they felt like it i suppose. always at different times might come in morning might come in later afternoon who knows. but good thing they clean. Photos online are definitely old cause it didn’t look like em. it has potential if ran by the right company. No money out into for years. My ceiling was leaking in one of my rooms, and sliding door locks broken in both rooms, basically it’s outdated and ran over. and be prepared to walk a lot

Wonderful property and great holiday. Sounds like we were lucky with a nice room in one of the newer refurbished units. Pools and restaurants were great. Smelly seaweed on the beach did not really bother us as pools were so good. Our only negative point was the ridiculous and absolutely unnecessary queues upon arrival to be checked in. We saw these queues every day. For god sake get some more check in staff !!!!!

The patio door was broken so it never locked and it was next to the hallway which anyone could have broken in the front door also was kind of hanging off the hands anyone could break an easily the food was okay, the resort was beautiful

The staff was wonderful throughout the property! Pool was kept extremely clean. Food was very good. However, the rooms and buildings are in need of renovations and there was no hot water on the property = only cold showers. :(

My husband & I stayed here back in 2011 as a couple without kids. We were in a building that was renovated, clean and noise free. Nothing to complain about, we had a great time. We decided to go back for spring break with our two young children & two other families as a group vacation. We were placed in building 5. Our room was run down, the mirroir in the bathroom had moisture stains all over it. The bathroom fixtures were tired and the water pressure was poor in the shower. We were unable to open the sliding door to the patio without being two adults as the doors track is finished and wouldn’t slide. The room wasn’t well insulated which resulted in hearing our upstairs neighbors and anyone that walked past our room with clarity/high volume. The food, as a vegetarian, was very limited. There should be easy options and unless I wanted to eat cream soup and pasta all week, I was out of luck. People stole towels from others while being on the beach or in the pool resulting in a $30 US charge. They need to get a better system. There was limited shade areas around the pools and on the beach and simply not enough beach chairs for the volume of patrons. The highly rated experience was the kids club and spa. The staff was very engaged and the kids loved the variety of activities presented. The spa treatments were fantastic and the staff was great. I would suggest that the spa staff arrange for transport to/from the rooms where the treatments are being given rather than make us walk

I wouldn't recommend staying at Bluebay Grand Esmeralda. Room was dank and you could see where they painted over old mold spots. The room had a spot to put your card so electricity would stay on. So when you left the room everything, including fridge and ac, would turn off. So you'd come back at the end of the day to warm water/pop/beer and a reset clock. The front desk ALWAYS had a line. There was usually only 1 or 2 people working and going through a small 5 person line took over 45mins. Most people, like us, were there to get their cards working again. They have a shuttle that can take you into Playa Del Carmen, if there are too many people for the shuttle. They send you in a cab. We were forgotten about and were told we needed to pay again to get back to the resort. The beach area was tiny and never had enough chairs for people wishing to use it. The food is the most basic you'd ever had: "crunchy garlic potatoes" are just fries. They allow you to book "reservations" on their app. But be prepared to share a seat with another couple or wait 30mins till they have room. They have golf karts that can speed up the 800m walk from the main area to the pool. Where do they stop? No idea. How often do they stop? No idea. There were some great staff that really helped out and did a great job. But yeah, choose another location.

DO NOT STAY IN THIS HOTEL! I booked as all-inclusive hotel. Half the stuff in their list is not included. Restaurants are never available! Staff DOES NOT SPEAK ENGLISH. They charge for food service and have no options! Room service and front desk never picks up the phone! When I tried to discuss these issues with a manager! They kept telling me that there is no manager on premises. Save your time and vacation and do not book this disgusting hotel!

We stayed at Blue Bay Grand Esmeralda for one night before checking into our residence at The Fives the next day. Never again! We waited over an hour just to check in, and immediately after that, we were ambushed by a staff member trying to aggressively sell us a timeshare. Too much pressure for guests who just want to relax. When we tried to reserve a restaurant for dinner, we were bluntly told, “You’re only here for one night, so you don’t qualify.” Very strange, considering our package included all-inclusive, and the hotel should have honored that. The food was disappointing..."Cuban-style"a-very limited. The buffet had no seafood, no fresh fruit, and the desserts tasted like they came from a Montreal Walmart. The next morning at 8am, I went looking for a decent coffee and was shocked to find out the only coffee shop opens at 10am! We finally made it there at 4pm...and yes, the coffee was actually good. The beach was full of seaweed, but the beachside pool was lively. Towels are given out with cards, and you really don’t want to lose them, they make it a whole process if you do. The room was clean and spacious, a bit worn down by time, but the bed was comfortable. In short: we were glad it was only one night.

The Blue Bay Grand Esmeralda had multiple options for dining keeping it varied throughout your stay. Drinks were plentiful and varied as well too which made hanging out by the pools, beach, and bars enjoyable. Housekeeping was also prompt and left the room tidy every time you came back from an activity, an excursion outside the resort, or when getting back from breakfast. The resort was also very walkable from your hotel room to the beach, pools, lobby, or the various restaurants. Each day and night different shows, activities, fairs, and parties were hosted. It made every night fun and different when staying at the resort. Overall, I'll definitely be coming back to this resort the next time I'll be going to Playa Del Carmen.

Poor management of personnel and assets. Annoying sales people. 2x the number of sales people than workers in the ULTRA HOT lobby. Never heard of fans. Expect to sweat there for at least an hour on arrival and an hour on departure. The black and white bar is a sweat tunnel. Most of the staff was friendly and doing the best management would allow. The drinks were sub-par begining to end, albiet plentyful. The food in the buffet is lower in quality than Golden Corral. So if you like that then you will be fine. The French and Itialian resturants are the only saving grace. Book them as offen as you can. They will enforce rules intermittantly. Evedently crocks are considered sandals. Our first room was by the water, but the awful smell gave us headaches and kept us up at night. They moved rooms but it was difficult and seened to put the staff "out".The upgraded steak "prime rib" was not as good as the steaks on the menu. And it was a 25$ upgrade. It wasnt even prime rib and it was 1/2 inch thick. The beds were OK. All seem exactly the same and upgraded rooms were not worth it unless you got the swim up rooms. THE POOL CLOSES AT 7. EXACTLY LIKE GET TF OUT THE POOL RIGHT NOW!!! Annoying should be open to a minimum of 10 PM. Understaffed night time bars saw lines, all bars. But we made the best of it. We had fun but kids run the resort at all hours of the night. Not a quiet and romantic resort to relax. Most can be ignored because of dirt cheap prices. Bargin basement resort.

Extremely Disappointed – Would Not Recommend My stay at BlueBay Grand Esmeralda was frustrating from start to finish. • The lobby was extremely hot and humid — no fans, no airflow. Very uncomfortable check-in. • Immediately greeted by a pushy timeshare salesman when all I wanted was to relax after traveling. • Golf carts are supposedly available for transport, but rarely seen. Expect to walk a lot in the heat. • Rooms are outdated, poorly maintained, and I found bugs in the bathroom. The AC barely cooled the room. • Food was below average, and the drinks were cheap and watered down. Only positive — bartenders were friendly. • Pool water looked murky and unclean, and there weren’t nearly enough lounge chairs for guests. • Restaurant reservations must be made the day before — everything gets booked quickly. First-come, same-day seating would be better. • Checkout process was unnecessary and confusing — having to get a slip to leave the resort? It just added more frustration to an already bad stay. Overall, I would never return and cannot recommend this place. Unless they refund me, I won’t be giving this resort a second chance.

Your transportation is awful couldn't get a ride to or from any restaurant. Couldn't book one of the special restaurants out of 7 days zero were available room was fine at first glance but then tried to take a shower and found other people's hair in it the bathtub is cracked felt like it was going to fall through the next floor

The Esmeralda is a great property. Been going there for about 6 years now. Food options, beach access, pools, quiet, service is incredible. Shows are fun. It's been evident they have updated property with new coffee bar, golf cart bus service, new shows & events. The pool side chair lounger availability is still an issue. People wake at 6am to save loungers. Seems every year they have less available which causes issues amongst the guests. The tennis court if fun but definitely needs repaired.

The property is huge. Has multiple restaurants, pools and bars. I arrived on 5/26 and expected kids to be running all over the place since it is a family friendly resort. Children were not in the way. They actually have a nice kid club. There was never a line for drinks. The buffet near the lobby called the festival fills quickly but there is another one in the Tulum building that is easier to access. There Italian restaurant was my favorite restaurant but there's also a steakhouse, seafood and French restaurant. The beach was nothing to write home about but it wasn't awful. There was lots of entertainment as well. Again everything I've mentioned was included at no additional cost. Plus I don't believe any other resort can beat their price in the area for the quality provided. The only thing I didn't care for was that the golf carts would sometimes drive by and not offer rides. That could be a problem depending on your building location and mobility. I absolutely loved my stay.

We like it overall, food was excellent, I was able to book all restaurants reservations through their app, entertainment was good as well, but still probably won’t return to this resort again and will explain why. First of all, is the ocean - water is full of weeds - it’s not possible to swim in it and for us it’s just must as we don’t care about pool at all (although pools seems like are good)…you can walk maybe 10 min to the lagoon which is very nice. Secondly, situation with the beach lounges is absolutely ridiculous - there are a very few of them…once I checked them out at 7a.m. - believe or not, but none were available…on my vacation I am not to set up an alarm for 5-6 a.m. to “book” a lounge for myself! Next door resort has all kind of lounges/benches/gazebos and a lot of them but we can’t use them of course - so, bring inflatables with you!!!

Great buffet. Different buffets each day was awesome. Did not miss home food. Beach was not great with lot of seaweeds. But you walk right to go in front of ocean maya royale and the beach there is great. Just 0 min walk. I would definitely come back.

Nous avons passé un très bon séjour au Blue Bay Grand Esmeralda. L’accueil est chaleureux et le personnel vraiment très gentil et attentionné. Les chambres sont confortables, même si un peu vieillottes, mais tout est propre et bien entretenu. La piscine et la plage sont magnifiques, malgré la présence de sargasses. Le petit-déjeuner est bon et varié, en revanche le buffet du déjeuner et du dîner manque de diversité. L’hôtel est situé à environ 15-20 minutes en taxi du centre-ville, ce qui est à prendre en compte si vous souhaitez sortir régulièrement. Côté excursions, celles proposées vers Bacalar et Holbox sont superbes et en petit comité, ce qui rend l’expérience très agréable. L’excursion à Isla Mujeres nous a moins plu car beaucoup plus fréquentée. Dans l’ensemble, une belle expérience, avec un personnel au top et un cadre agréable pour des vacances reposantes.

Had a great experience. Loved my room . I stay st Uxmal (building 4) Only negatives were the dirty ocean water and not enough carts coming around to pick up guests.

This is an excellent resort; good facilities. It is a huge property with lots of walking or shuttle riding. It is too far from Playa del Carmen to walk, and bus is a bit difficult; $30 U.S. by cab. Food is very good, sometimes some is not hot enough. As others noted, not enough pool chairs (like most resorts). The staff is great; the shows were too late for us.

The staff was amazing. There are some wonderful workers there. The property is beautiful. Plenty of wildlife and picturesque spots. The food was ok. I enjoyed the Mexican and French restaurants. The beach was dirty and covered with seaweeds. Some of the rooms are moldy and have visible water stains. I refused to take the first room that was assigned to me because of the mold. Overall, my children enjoyed the experience. However, I don't think I would visit again unless there are some major upgrades to the rooms.

The personal half its exellent but the other half its terrible also i wait 1 hour to make the check in To make a reservation for dinner its hard always full but the food its exellent one of the best its the french

When we arrived at the resort and checked in at the lobby, the staff gave us zero explanation on how anything works, they didn’t give us room keys or tell us what our room number even was. We had to ask for that info. We requested a king size bed with an ocean view with our reservation. Upon arrival, our bed had two beds that were just larger than twins, not even doubles. The toilet was broken, the faucets in the bathroom were broken, the mirrors were covered with a black film. The closet doors were broken and hanging off. When we spoke to the front desk they said they had no other king rooms until one of the guests in our party who is ‘circle one’ (vip) complained about our room, and then all of a sudden they had two rooms with king beds that we could view and chose from. The buffets were mediocre at best. The a la carte restaurants were inconsistent. Concierge would only allow you to book into the a la Carte’s one day in advance, and most of the time there was no reservations left. The hotel handed out towel cards that you had to hand over to get towels for the pool, if you lost your towels, you didn’t get your towel cards back and were charged $60 USD to get new towel cards. However, staff would often walk around the pool and collect towels so that guests would have to pay for new towel cards. There were cotes and raccoons running all over the resort, including inside the restaurants and up on tables! I would not recommend this resort to anyone!!

Room: completely outdated. There’s mold on the ceiling. Bathroom mirror is tarnished. We killed a cockroach on the last night. AC works but could be stronger - we had to leave a room key in always to keep it on. They do provide you with iron and mini blow dryer in the room. Food: you need to reserve restaurants at 0700am in concierge or through the app for the next day. Spots fill up quickly. Italian restaurant was not too good. Mexican was good! Oh, and you have to go to the buffet for dinner, you need to make a line to go in. I could not fathom that in an all inclusive. Anywhere you go they serve a lot of steak which was fresh. Pool: beautiful! Gets cleaned every night. In the morning, it is cold but by early afternoon is feels like a hot tub. No bar inside the pool which sucked because you constantly need to get out for drinks. Beach: DISGUSTING! It has seaweed everywhere and the water is brown. It also literally smells like a toilet. It was gross.we rented a jet ski and If you go deeper in, the water is actually clean and blue - so that’s an option. Drinks: watered down. You literally have to tell them to make it stronger and even then it’s straight ice. Staff: somewhat friendly. They just try to do their job and stay out of trouble. Nobody is amicable or there to conversate. We are big tippers and didn’t feel the urge to tip as often because we felt like they didn’t tailor to our needs . Like I said, the bare minimum. Overall, definitely doesn’t seem like a 4 star

The staff absolutely made the vacation. Every single person was so friendly and accommodating. We enjoyed special attention and personal service from the waiters and waitresses at the Festival Restaurant as well as Jaal-Ha Restaurant, the two buffet style places. The rooms where meticulously cleaned and restocked every day. Thank you very much! We did not participate in the sales presentation as we didn't feel any upgrade would be worth the price. The food did leave us somewhat disappointed, as it was pretty much the same thing everyday, except when you made reservations for the A la Carte, which was just okay. If you like to party, this is the place, as the music goes until midnight by the pools. Shopping was good, grounds were very well maintained, beach was nice despite the influx of seaweed (not their fault) The staff worked non-stop to clear as much as possible. DEFINITELY DO THE SNORKEL EXCURSION AT WET SET IN PUERTO MORALES!!! THE 2ND LARGEST REEF IN THE WORLD AND IT IS AMAZING!

Good value for the price that I paid. Staff was excellent and very friendly. Restaurant staff were very attentive. Room was good, a\c was really good. Gym was well equipped and open till 10 pm which was great. 2 nice big pools. The one area where they could do better would be the buffet food. I would serve fresh, natural juices instead of artificial ones, as well as real decaf coffee. Hash browns at breakfast would be great for Canadians, and maybe a bit more variety, particularly at supper time. I usually won’t complain about buffet food as it is what it is, but I think a few small chat would go a long way. To end positively, I was once again impressed by how friendly and professional all of the Mexican staff were.
