Nice hostel, great that the single room with shared bathroom was affordable. Unfortunately the wifi was down for most of my stay which was a bit annoying. And my room was about 10 fire doors and 100m away from the bathroom. But otherwise good location and friendly staff.

Good communication immediately after booking, updates and reminders via WhatsApp. Friendly staff. Interesting old buildings with lots of original features. 24/7 front desk, small shop area for drinks and snacks. Communal kitchen area was a good size. Communal living room also a good size. Small balcony to sit out and see the city. Room was small but this was made clear. Towels were included in our room booking, however when I checked in on line the rules stated towels had to be paid for, so I purchased an additional towel. When we checked in the desk staff member was not aware our room price included towels. Facilities stated hair dryer, however this has to be borrowed from front desk, not available in room. The shared bathroom stated shared by no more than 4 rooms, however the 2 shared bathrooms on our floor only had 1 properly functioning shower between at least 10 rooms. Bathrooms were not very clean and due to a poorly flushing toilet I had to clean away other people's mess twice. Optional add on Breakfast was good.When we tried to access the free WiFi there was consistently a message advising it might not be secure. General decor was tired with signs of damp. A nice ambience, a reasonable price, but on balance probably would not book again due to poor bathroom facilities.

My recent stay at Ph - The room was clean, and the bed was comfortable—no complaints. The staff were generally good and helpful. One of the male staff members was exceptionally kind and provided genuine assistance, which I really appreciated. I didn’t catch his name, but he was on the night shift on 12th March and 19th March. Overall, I had a great experience and would happily stay again. P.S. Just a small piece of feedback: Having handwash in the kitchen would be much appreciated.

This property is quite well located, close to the train station and with walkable distance from the city centre and the main pier area. I didn’t like though to be told by a lady from the night staff that I could not stay in the main are bar to eat my own food I bought elsewhere because apparently they were doing an event of some sort. That area is also included in the hostel, as far I could see. Luckily there was some seating available inside the main doors. The room was fine but the bed was too low, almost reaching the floor, so not much comfortable. Good overall but could be better.

Booked one of the rooms. Incredibly good value. Nice toiletries in bathroom and bed was comfortable. £4 towel offer a good deal and great way to reduce environmental impact. Only downside was the front door opening and closing was very loud - I think the room was right above it.

It was blissfully quiet and clean overall. Bit the communal kitchen was truly grotty and dirty and I cannot blame the guests as there is no means to clean, wipe or dry anything or the surfaces. A particular bugbear was nowhere having a means to dry ones hands, be that in the kitchen or the bathrooms.Very rapidly became irksome. I'd stay again but really would rather do so with these issues addressed.

The rooms are very good. However, the common areas, especially the kitchen and "dining room" are neglected. A single small fridge is simply not sufficient for this number of rooms. Asking 3 pounds for the luggage room is also quite rare...

I have stayed at this hotel for 4 nights, while I was working away from home. I booked to have an en-suite so I can have my own personal space and bathroom. Room was relatively clean - nothing to comment. Staff service was friendly but not very useful - I had no heating in my bathroom since I have arrived. It was freezing cold. I have mentioned it to the staff the next day and a ticket was raised for someone to come the following day. Not very useful as I wasn't there for a long time. I have also mentioned that there was a slight leak from that same bathroom radiator that wasn't working but they didn't seem to care. The person who supposedly came to look at the heating didn't do anything to make it work and the leak was still there, wasn't even wiped clean. Property conditions was poor but facilities were decent - as stated above, the bathroom heater wasn't working but the heating in the room was insufficient, while the heater was on max 24/7. During the nights I was freezing cold with the radiator being slightly warm to the tough. The windows dont even close properly and the wood on the windows is rotting. Besides those things, everything was of a liveable quality. Outside the room, they have a kitchen (where the microwave is very useful to get cheaper meal), common area, a few classes a week and it is warm overall. The area around the hotel also seems quite dangerous. A lot of homeless people, glass from broken windows and closest car park with shocking reviews.

Decent location, less than 20 minute walk to the train station. I stayed on the second floor, in a single room and there must have been at least 10 rooms on the same floor. Based on the people I've seen, there must have been some rooms that had multiple beds. That said, I was surprised that there was only one shared bathroom with just one toilet and one shower. The night started out quiet. It was a Saturday so naturally people were partying, and started rolling into the hostel around 2-3am, being pretty loud, which is expected for a hostel. As my room was beside the bathroom, I quickly learned how thin the walls were. Some of the young kids were super drunk, stomping back and forth between the bathroom and their room, talking loudly. I tried to fall back asleep but couldn't and eventually got up to use the bathroom. One guy was passed out, so I had to go use the main lobby bathroom. I told the person at reception, and he went right away to check on the guy in the bathroom and told the guys to quiet down, which they did eventually. In the morning when I checked out, I told the receptionist that there was vomit in the shower and toilet, and she didn't seem to care. If I had paid $50 for the room, I'd shrug it off, but this came to $150 (about 82 GBP) a night which was totally not worth it. Single rooms should be separated from the mixed dorm rooms, perhaps on a different floor

Room and bed were comfortable but the shared bathroom (which was not clear at the time of booking) was disgusting, the lock on the toilet was broken and despite me mentioning it to two members of staff nothing was done across the three days I was there. On the Saturday morning I went to use the bathroom to find it covered in urine. The walls were paper thin which meant being kept awake as people came back from evenings out but also by the incredibly noisy cleares first thing in the morning. The walk from the center to the hostel felt unsafe due to the underpasses and large amount fo homeless people on route. The price was only slightly less than the hotel around the corner whihc also offered breakfast. I will definitely not stay here again.

However, the wifi did not extend to the room (had to go to common area for internet) and the mattress was extremely springy (could feel every single spring bore into my back all night).

Staff very helpful and friendly at check in. Got to honest wasn’t expecting a lot with it being a hostel but it was great. Rooms could just do with a good clean. But it was warm and comfortable providing a good base for visiting Birmingham. Just do homework on where to park if travelling by car.

We booked a loft room. It looks beautiful on first impressions, good sized bed and nice furniture. However, the room is right next to a railway line which starts early in the morning, cleanliness wasn’t the best (bathroom floor not brushed/hoovered and crumbs all over the furniture), no toaster, paint all flaking away, holes in walls that need attention, only one lumpy pillow each, portable heaters as no radiators, no tv for a private room, attention to detail needed especially for the price point for a private room.

One of the worst hotel experience that I ever had.. The checkin staff girl is nice, but the room have no ventilation system. The room is so hot and smelly, I sleep really bad because of this. The guy is rude when I checked out in the early morning and I dont really recommend to stay here.

Our room was very small, it needed a lot of upgrading, there was a missing window pane which gave the impression of it being unsafe but the room was very clean and a comfortable double bed.

Room was warm with radiator not attention to detail with person on the desk .. no towels given and none in the room … room right next to the door people coming in and out of so could hear everything and the numerous people on the phones. In a rush to leave early morning then made to wait a few minutes etc to check the booking which made no sense as it was all paid and checked for on line and night before. Bit of a shame as the room itself was lovely and cosy

You get what you pay for. Needed a bed to get my head down with my son as we were visiting for a University open day. The cleanliness and quality of the hotel itself was ok for the price. However, the comfort was not, paper thin walls and other guests playing music until 0300am followed by noisy trains directly opposite in the morning meant an awful nights sleep. Plus room was too hot and the heating system was not working properly and no windows opened.

I stayed in a double and loved the bed, it was so comfy and very clean! Staff were very nice. Wifi didn't work on my phone and the shared bathroom was very cold but other than that it was very affordable and had a good time!

Absolutely appalling experience at Malacuna Hotel and Hostel, Birmingham I booked a room at this property, paid online, and received both a confirmation and follow-up messages from the hotel. I was travelling from Oslo to London and then driving to Birmingham, planning to arrive around midnight for a few hours of rest before early morning meetings. Woman at the check in desk was rude. Made me wait 45 minutes to check in and was stand off ish when i asked her a question. They didnt give me the double bed room that i booked instead i got a completely different single bunk bed room and the woman questioned how i booked a room that wasnt available when really she shouldve questioned the hotels booking system- rude and entitled girl who’s ego needs lowering - wont be returning

I ahve stayed in many hostels around the world and this was definietly one of the worst. Room and bed were comfortable but the shared bathroom (which was not clear at the time of booking) was disgusting, the lock on the toilet was broken and despite me mentioning it to two members of staff nothing was done across the three days I was there. On the Saturday morning I went to use the bathroom to find it covered in urine. The walls were paper thin which meant being kept awake as people came back from evenings out but also by the incredibly noisy cleares first thing in the morning. The walk from the center to the hostel felt unsafe due to the underpasses and large amount fo homeless people on route. The price was only slightly less than the hotel around the corner whihc also offered breakfast. I will definitely not stay here again.

Friendly, quirky hostel in a convenient location by the Jewellery Quarter. Great value for money with friendly staff and a relaxed atmosphere. Plenty of places to charge phones etc and good quality WiFi. Only improvement I'd suggest is the beds, which were roomy but not the most comfortable.

Fantastic location for central Birmingham! We had a private room which was very spacious and clean. And the price was around half of staying in a local hotel. Staff were great, easy free parking right outside after 6pm on a Saturday which was ideal and visible CCTV outside which was reassuring. Really impressed with this place, would definitely return next time we’re in Birmingham!

I have stayed at this hotel for 4 nights, while I was working away from home. I booked to have an en-suite so I can have my own personal space and bathroom. Room was relatively clean - nothing to comment. Staff service was friendly but not very useful - I had no heating in my bathroom since I have arrived. It was freezing cold. I have mentioned it to the staff the next day and a ticket was raised for someone to come the following day. Not very useful as I wasn't there for a long time. I have also mentioned that there was a slight leak from that same bathroom radiator that wasn't working but they didn't seem to care. The person who supposedly came to look at the heating didn't do anything to make it work and the leak was still there, wasn't even wiped clean. Property conditions was poor but facilities were decent - as stated above, the bathroom heater wasn't working but the heating in the room was insufficient, while the heater was on max 24/7. During the nights I was freezing cold with the radiator being slightly warm to the tough. The windows dont even close properly and the wood on the windows is rotting. Besides those things, everything was of a liveable quality. Outside the room, they have a kitchen (where the microwave is very useful to get cheaper meal), common area, a few classes a week and it is warm overall. The area around the hotel also seems quite dangerous. A lot of homeless people, glass from broken windows and closest car park with shocking reviews.

The shared bathroom stated shared by no more than 4 rooms, however the 2 shared bathrooms on our floor only had 1 properly functioning shower between at least 10 rooms. Bathrooms were not very clean and due to a poorly flushing toilet I had to clean away other people's mess twice. Optional add on Breakfast was good.When we tried to access the free WiFi there was consistently a message advising it might not be secure. General decor was tired with signs of damp. A nice ambience, a reasonable price, but on balance probably would not book again due to poor bathroom facilities.

This property is quite well located, close to the train station and with walkable distance from the city centre and the main pier area. I didn’t like though to be told by a lady from the night staff that I could not stay in the main are bar to eat my own food I bought elsewhere because apparently they were doing an event of some sort. That area is also included in the hostel, as far I could see. Luckily there was some seating available inside the main doors. The room was fine but the bed was too low, almost reaching the floor, so not much comfortable. Good overall but could be better.
