Fitzroy Island Resort

Beautiful island spoilt by poor customer service and bad management at the resort. It was being run by backpackers for backpackers, none of the staff couldnt give a dam about the customers. The apartment had a full kitchen but the so called general store had nothing that you could cook only pies and muffins, not even butter for your toast. Foxys beach bar / cafe was only open lunchtimes and Friday evening the Zephers the main restaurant had a very limited menu and if you didn’t book they turned you away. The pool bar was closed in the evening even though it should be open until 8 pm. We asked for a pinacollada and the barman said no, I’ve run out of coconut juice, the restaurant bar had some but he couldn’t be bothered to get it so I had to get it myself, he wasn’t bothered at all , very poor service in every way ,such a shame as such a beautiful place. The hotel seemed to be run by young kids who just did as little as possible and most of them could be found out the back playing with their phones. Very disappointed

Zimmer okay, Frühstück dürftig für 35 Dollar, Foxy‘s Bar oder Imbiss (?) laut und nur Fastfood-Angebot. Das Restaurant will mehr sein, als es ist. Sehr gewöhnliche Weinauswahl bei hohen Preisen. Einziger Lichtblick beim Abendessen: das eye fillet steak. Unmögliche Öffnungszeiten für die Poolbar: 11:00 a.m. bis 05,:00 p.m. und magere Getränkeauswahl. Personal: offenbar viele Hilfskräfte, teils okay, teils unwillig und schon mal leicht überfordert. Der Aufenthalt ist etwas für Leute, denen es auf Komfort, Gastfreundlichkeit und Klasse nicht so ankommt. Viel Luft nach oben in fast allen Bereichen. 3 Sterne bestenfalls!

Beautiful location, great facilities, snorkelling and turtles off the beach.

Great resort on island. Read mixed reviews before booking but was happy with my stay in early May. On days I was there the Conditions were not great for snorkelling but there are daily activities you can do and I hiked all available trails. The lighthouse/summit track is very steep so was challenging but rewarding at top. Wifi was good but dropped one day so just asked reception for a new code and that worked. Friendly and helpful staff. Did turtle recovery centre tour and nature walk. Lovely pool area. Decent food at the bar area further away (forget the name). Beach was nice but beware scraping yourself on (dead or alive) coral! I agree with some reviews that they didn’t seem to advocate much environmental awareness (no recycling for example). A unique experience in a picturesque setting.

Great stay for a couple of days, accommodation needs some updating (parts of the room were falling apart ie. broken tiles, sharp grout and dripping aircon). Some staff were amazing and some were very abrupt and unhelpful. The guided kayak tour was great, Sara was super lovely and just a really relaxing way to hang out on the way. Pool area is small and limited seating but drinks at the pool were great. Foxy’s has ok food but prices are pretty high, live music on a Saturday night is a good vibe. Overall a good short stay if you’re looking to just relax, snorkel and get away from winter.

The resort is in general in a very poor state. While there seems to have been a soft refurb of some rooms and the Zephyr restaurant, I’m glad I only stayed one night. This must have been a beautiful property in its day but appears to have been left to neglect. No one seems in charge. The staff are lovely & the setting is spectacular, with a great pool. Didn’t feel clean at all. It screamed backpacker. It wasn’t that bad but I had to get my backpacker mindset on to enjoy.

Absolutely beautiful resort in a great location with friendly staff. I especially enjoyed the pool and swim up bar! Great dining options available and very clean rooms. Plenty of activities such as kayaking and the glass bottom boat tour to keep you occupied.

Hotel desperately need an update on all amenities. The rooms are dated and old. Everything is just a bit run down. The pool bar is screaming for help. I went to order a drink and took one look at the ice machine and said no mould to that mould infestation. The staff look and act as unmotivated as the dated amenities. The only real cafe serves C grade deep fried food. It’s incredibly disappointing. The hotel is nice enough to create a relaxing vibe and the location is a 10! Right on the water. So nice waking up to the sound of the ocean. But yeh overall that hotel is a 3 star at most.

Room spotless and staff were great. Very helpful. Amenities were excellent. Only disappointment was the breakfast.

Not so clean

Horrible from the start. Arrived ant 9am and no towels were provided despite it being an island meant to enjoy water activities. Room was ready at 3 and walked into a horror movie. From bugs to a moldy shower and an odor of furniture more than 20 years old. The air vents around the property were swimming in dust and the fans at FOXYS were rusted to the point of almost falling on guests. For the resort to charge almost 900$ for a room is absolutely ridiculous and insulting. We attempted to eat dinner at their “fine dining” restaurant which was far from “fine dining” as a local from Miami we know what fine dining is. You have to order a minimum of two dishes coming out to 68$ minimum evening if you’re just feeling peckish and order a dish they’ll try to charge you the 68$. Mind you the furniture at this “fine dining” establishment is rusted using plastic chairs never mind the servers are rude and dressed in Tshirts. Will definitely NOT be returning and will be spreading the word internationally.

Nudey Beach was great. Everything else not so much. 3pm check in, boat got in at 2:30. Room wasn’t available until 4pm. When we arrived to our room it was still dirty. Tried to push free drink cards to make up for the mess. The beds- terribly uncomfortable. The grounds around the resort smelled like sewage. Thought we would splurge and book a nice stay after staying in hostels. I’d take the hostel over this resort. The beach was great but you could do it all in a day without having to stay at this “resort.”

The resort id a bit dated and at times a bit unclean but who cares. The island is fantastic. When the day trippers left we virtually had the island to ourselves. The staff were wonderful. Special mentions Hannah reception, the wonderful woman in the dive shop, her kindness in helping us with snorkels and stinger suits and Francesco at the bar. Hannah was so kind making sure we got home from a challenging hike. We loved it so much we stayed a day longer. Thank you all for a wonderful trip.

The Staff in Zephyr Restaurant were absolutely brilliant & the food was superb. The Bathroom was not clean & a bit of elbow grease wouldn’t go astray. Room itself was comfortable & quiet.

Property was a bit tired - bifold doors were hard to open with broken handles. Broken tiles in unit and tiles in bathroom could do with a hard scrub in the grout as it could look nicer and fresher with a bit of work.

Staff was great. Beautiful location. Great amenities. Did find that hotel services lacked. Room not cleaned properly. Only received milk for tea twice. Lucky brought over some long life milk of our own. Complaints not taken seriously. Especially for our long stay.

Positive things: Beautiful island and spacious apartment with good facilities. Friendly staff in the reception and restaurant. Negative things: 1. Cleaning was really bad: old dirty towel from previous guests was still there, the bath room was dirty and so was the balcony. This is not what we had expected, especially as the hotel price was VERY high. 2. Our trip with the glass bottom boat was cancelled. No new trip was offered later the same day, when the boat was fixed. The tour staff did not care. For us, who can't swim, it means that we lost the opportunity to see the reef - our main reason to visit the island. This was a once in the lifetime travel (20.000 km) from Denmark, so we are very disappointed, especially about the feeling that the hotel did not care - it is like a big holiday factory.

Wonderful location with great snorkelling straight off the beach. Our room was dark with view of stairwell. Service generally good except at Foxy's Bar where it was poor. This might be due to the staff having to deal with the daytripper hordes all day but they need to be a bit less offhand and complacent with the staying guests remaining after the last boat has left for the day. Dining options were limited with the main restaurant very overpriced with small serves.

The "two bedroom suite" was a beautiful one bedroom suite with an adjacent (but securely connected) dungeon that faced a walkway. You could not open the curtains without full exposure to all. Ok to put the kids to sleep in, but that's it. Don't go there with another couple. Also should mention the way overpriced Zephyr restaurant. Save your money and get a burger at Foxy's. Having said all that, and knowing what I know now, I'd still go back. Lots of great people in a beautiful setting. Oh, andca shout out to the glass bottom boat tour guide with the big eyebrows.

I like the friendliness of staffs. I don’t like no wifi at room and limited amenities in room and no proper maintenance of property with stain on bathroom floor, ceiling and door.

The location was good being close to areas to snorkle and close to the lighthouse and summit. The food at the restaurant was good but there needs to be one or two more food outlets. Checkin would be much better at 10am. 3pm is way too late ! If there is a late check in there needs to be free lockers for luggage and wet snorkling and wetsuits hangers rather than carrying wet gear until 3pm. A ferry at 3pm in addition to the morning one and 12:15 and 5pm ferry would be very much appreciated. Also the rooms have no reading bedside lights. The rooms also face a rock wall, rather than the ocean which is a big shame being on an island.

Island style! Super quiet as the resort is the only place on the island and surrounded by steep hills and dense tropical jungle. Not much to do in the evening but the restaurant offers a limited but very creative menu. Room was spacious with a separate dining and sitting areas and all the rooms had a water view along with the deck as well. Very peaceful. There was great snorkeling only steps away from the room. Also a number of fairly challenging hikes in the park with surprisingly well maintained trails. Lots of steps!! A great workout, Large and sparsely used beaches although they are mostly coral so foot ware is required and the soft sandy spots are few. You want a quiet tropical island escape, Fitzroy Island is for you.

The rooms with no sea view were very dark

Booked 2 King studios. Terrible location, back of complex, only window looking out back onto walkway used by everyone so you needed to close blinds for privacy so no natural light and as walkway used by everyone constant noice. I booked 2 studios, but if I'd realised they were so bad, i would have happily spent extra to get a 2 bedroom room. So as far as the resort goes, it was bad. Maybe we were punished for using a booking agent. Went to Foxys for cocktails, told not enough staff to make them so headed to Zephrys but couldn't order a cocktail until we went thru the process of booking a table, then waiting 5 minutes for a staff member to take our order, then waiting 25 minutes for our order not to arrive, to be told a mix-up had occurred with order. Told them to cancel order, which was agreed, and moved to Roxy's. All good but had to fight on check out to stop payment for cocktails being charged for drinks never received. Went to Roxys and ordered dinner. Brother in Law ordered Burger before me. Advised him they took Frozen Burgers from freezer and dropped in deep frier. Thought a little amusing but when burger arrived it was so burned black. Urged him to return but he said no, at end of meal confirmed terrible, other meals okay...dont buy the burger. So if you stay at Fitzroy resort don't use king studios, rooms 102 & 104 worst ever.

Fitzroy island is such a beautiful place definitely a not to miss location there is one complaint about the island unfortunately and that is the staff that run the island and also the workers . I’ve never met such a bunch of sad sack people with not an ounce of hospitality or character in any of them! I’m not to sure what the deal is with the staff but looks like they are all forced to be there against their own will. Some of the staff have no clue what is going on nor do they care. Other than the staff the island has a unique appeal about it that is highly recommended to visit just don’t expect to see the staff happy or smile in the process.

I didn't like that their email said no need line up in queue if you checkin online, because it's untrue and I still had to queue up as they wanted to re-check all the details and it was worse because others hadn't checked in online so their process took longer. The receptionist was obviously not aware of this email and instead of apologizing, was justifying. I was told that we can use all resort facilities after check out until the boat arrives but they refused to give any more than one towel if you went for a swim, and were making it seem like it's a favour? I am not going to use the sea salt drenched towel for after shower drying, it's pretty common sense. I have never seen any hotel, resort or even hostels refuse their guests of towels. It was bizarre. The staff was being unnecessarily uptight and unhelpful for no good reason I felt. The common shower facility in the building was extremely dirty and unsantinary. Hair and mud everywhere on the floor. That cannot be resort experience. Very yuck. Nothing to do in the resort in the evening. Everything shuts down by 7pm. There was also no intercom to call the reception, in my room. The only helpful staff there was the equipment hire people, guided really well. All in all, I do not recommend the resort at all. I would suggest a day trip is better instead.

Fitzroy Resort staff went out of their way to make our stay enjoyable. Katie at the front desk answered all of our questions and made great suggestions.

The bar and the front desk staff were terrible! The restaurant and Snorkel staff were great! The room was ok, not worth the price.

Snorkelling is amazing and staff at dive shop very friendly and helpful. Staff at reception were mixed some helpful and friendly. Tried to change room but told not available when I could see availability on line which was disappointing. Food very limited for vegetarians but ok and expensive.

The 3pm check in time and 10am check out is a bit rough if staying only one night. There is no flexibility in those times which was disappointing. We arrived on the 11 o’clock ferry and had to wait until nearly 3pm for a room. The restaurant food is aimed at a teenager taste; chips and burgers. Nothing healthy. The Vietnamese salad is terrible. Nothing Vietnamese about that, mostly cold noodles with a tiny bit of green. The cook should take a trip to Vietnam to see what it supposed to look like, with heaps of vegetables and little noodles.

My daughter participated in a work-study program through her school so was on the island for a total of 12 days. I met up with her at the end of her trip to go diving and enjoy the island a bit. The staff at the check in desk were friendly and incredibly helpful. They went above and beyond to try and help us out no matter what the time. I completed a total of 2 dives with a dive master named Violet. Her enthusiasm and love of the sport was obvious. The weather the second day was cooler and too cold for us to dive with the shortie wetsuits provided so we hiked the Summit Trail instead. Beautiful overlooks and a must if you are physically able! Our AC was not working which ended up not being a big deal as it was winter, and the technician who was sent to check it out was prompt and courteous. Overall a nice experience! Two to 3 days is a good timeframe in order to see what the island has to offer.

Nice rooms with air con, breakfast good at the restaurant, meals at the pub are good but it closes at 8pm. Quiet, relaxed stay, snorkelling was good, just off the beach, swimming with two turtles and many fish.

Nice, isolated island resort which is a 45-minute ferry ride from Cairns. Had originally planned on staying three nights but changed to two prior to booking. The resort is an older property which, while clean and maintained, shows its age with some needed maintenance to return to (what I'm sure was) it's former island oasis status. The access to snorkeling and the great vigorous and scenic 4 km hike were the highlights of the resort. On the other, hand, the isolation and lack of alternative restaurants, made my decision to stay only two nights a good one. I was fortunate to have a spectacular sunset on my final evening. Overall, the resort, with the view from my room, the snorkeling access and invigorating hike with incredible views, was well worth a visit.

Very relaxing and peaceful, Snorkeling, swimming just on your doorstep. Loads of fish and a surprise turtle snorkel amongst you.

Easy snorkelling off the front beach. Comfortable bed and quiet resort at night. Reception staff super helpful and lovely. Restaurant dining, especially dinner, was excellent quality. Average coffee. Restaurant staff didn’t have great customer service.

It's a lovely island with snorkelling right off the beach and some enjoyable walks and views. The cheaper eating place (Foxy's) still has high quality food and the staff are amazing there and at the resort. The expensive restaurant (Zephyrs) has a minimum spend of $60 per person which seems a shame as it is in a lovely and convenient position but isn't so popular.

They coral the guests as there is a limited choice of dining unless you pay $35 pp for breakfast or $66 pp for dinner. Terrible experience and the General Manager dodges guests. Worse than Fawlty Towers Total Rip off

Good gluten free food options

The property was remote and beautiful. It is a small, unpopulated tropical island that is a national park. There were very little food options at the two restaurants and no option to buy snacks or food. It was interesting that there was a full kitchen in the suite but no where to buy food to cook.

Lack of food options, we respected their rules of not bringing our own food/snacks and consequently regretted it, the general store had very little stock, breakfast and dinner -good menu but food barely warm, paid $30 surcharge for Sunday night restaurant dinner it was very nice food but served almost cold, couldn’t get a decent coffee all long life milk don’t understand this when the ferry is going back and forth at l ast two-three times a day
