Convenient position close to eateries, shopping & an easy walk to the beach. Rooms were quiet although its time to upgrade their mattresses. Gym, pool & spa were excellent. Will definitely stay again.

- Excellent and polite service! - Room was clean and smelled clean! No musty smells. - No room service unless you pay so make sure you ask for clean towels if you need them (we stayed for two nights). The towels has a smoky smell though? Like an incinerator smell. Even the fresh towels smelled like smoke. - Lovely outdoor spa and heated pool (wind is chilly tho so spa was the winner). - Underground parking for safety @ $35 for our whole stay which was better than parking on the street. - decent sized rubbish bins! Overall it was a good, comfy stay.

Great location, close to shopping and lots of fantastic eateries. Only downside was the pool was closed for maintenance which wasn’t advised at time of booking and the air conditioning in our room was stuck on 17 degrees. Good job I like a cool room.

Looks like the property is going through refurbishment at the moment. Restaurant isn’t open and I didn’t see any staff apart from the person in the front desk. They only service the room every 3 days and if you want it serviced more, you pay $35! Car parking too is steep at $30 per night, plenty of parking outside and is free after 6pm. Once a lovely hotel now looking tired and without much love. Hopefully all will be better than what it used to be after the refurbs

When I reserved, June 4th this year, I specifically asked about a hotel bar and restaurant as we planned to watch the AB's vs England there, I was told yes. On arriving I asked when would the bar open, to be told bar and restaurant closed for refurbishing! I also asked about the Gold Card discount and early booking fee, to be told I'd need to contact Expedia about that! Overall basically a very overpriced venue, $500.00 for 2 nights plus parking.More of a motel than a hotel. What can be done about this please? Thanks, Jane.

Unfortunately the spa pool was only lukewarm at best. Was not able to be heated in the 2 days we were there. We were not told about it before getting in. The spa/pool area was the reason we chose this hotel so we were very disappointed in that.

Check in was fine, staff friendly. The room very basic and tired. Most annoying was the private apartment had next door had an old can rolling around the balcony very noisily in the wind (it had been used as an alternative to a pipe) I was with my children and not thrilled about the neighbours getting high next door. They offered to move us which was great. The pool area is also very tired with a lot of broken furniture, there is no restaurant. The rooms weren’t super clean with mould and hair in the bathroom. The reviews on this place were far too generous, if you’re looking at this price point I’d definitely recommend another place (almost any other place would be better)

I have stayed at the Spencer Hotel a number of times last year and have the room to be of good quality and clean. This stay, however, was disappointing in terms of on arrival in my room finding an unclean bathroom. The plughole of the bath/shower was filled with hair from previous guests. Once I had removed most of this the plug was continually blocked while the shower was on. As well as this, the TV in the lounge was out of action showing a weak signal sign on the screen. There were a number of other issues withthe overall cleanliness and state of the room. Overall disappointing. I did receive an apology from the receptionist on check out though.

The rooms at the Spencer are becoming dated. The paint on the roof in the shower was all flaky and falling off. Our room was not cleaned the entire stay. On day 3 we had to all and ask to replace our towels. We used to love staying here but I feel that may have been our last visit.

Good location close to the centre of Takapuna, and a short walk to the beach. Our room was pleasant, with views over the lake and ocean, but there were some unwanted curry smells around. The shower went crazy and soaked everything in the bathroom. Public areas need some major upgrades - wooden floors in the foyer were in poor repair and there was a lot of old wooden furniture in the bar that made it feel 1970;s - disappointing that the bar closed at 10pm on a Friday night. Wifi was terrible.

Unfortunately this wasn’t a “hotel” experience at all. We made the most of our stay but it was a bit disappointing when it came to staff service. We tried ringing reception on multiple occasions throughout our three days there and the phone was never answered. Our rooms weren’t serviced even though the booking site says serviced once per stay. We booked two rooms so our family could all stay together but they put us 8 floors apart from each other. There was no ice. Terrible smell in the bathroom too and wasn’t aware there were residents amongst our rooms so strong cooking smells coming through the air conditioning was awful. We tried discussing this when checking out but we felt ignored. Great location and a nice pool but that would be all we would recommend about it unfortunately.

Our room’s wifi wasn’t working - the manager got us another room quickly. The room was nice- but there was a large family nearby cooking some very potent smelling food and it went through the vents and into our room and was not to our liking. It was pretty powerful and while probably tasty for them- not so great for our visit

No person at Reception on arrival, couldn't locate anyone except other guests. Waited almost half an hour and called out. Eventually located staff member who was in an office out the back.He said there was a bell on the counter. In a huge lobby and Reception area it was invisible. Had to call down to get a tiny container of milk and an $18 frozen meal to hear in microwave. No stand for luggage/suitcase, nowhere to hang clothes, not even one coat hanger. Very poor for a 4 star hotel. and the $230 spent for basically a bed and shower. I chose to stay here as I knew I would be tired after international flight and thought that I would at least be able to have a drink at the bar, meet friends and then enjoy a meal at the Restaurant. To not even have a small mini bar any snacks or even a bottle or just of chilled water in the room is not conducive to a relaxing or pleasant stay.Very, very disappointed.

Great location, close to shopping and lots of fantastic eateries. Only downside was the pool was closed for maintenance which wasn’t advised at time of booking and the air conditioning in our room was stuck on 17 degrees. Good job I like a cool room.

This property was very poorly appointed, it was dull and lifeless existing on reputation not amenities, presentation or service. The room was minimally appointed, 1 chair for 2 people(?) 2 coffee pods only and the heated pool was being “ maintained “ so unavailable. Room service was also not available and at check in we were told a list of what wasn’t available, a very negative way to begin an overnight spontaneous break. I don’t recommend this hotel, I stayed quite a few years ago and it has deteriorated over time in condition, service and amenities

I had an amazing view of Takapuna Beach from the 16th floor room with balcony. The room was a bit dated with cleaning service offered only every 3rd day. The front desk staff stay in the back office and are not visible. You need to stand at the couter for a while before the attendant notices that you are there and comes out. The front desk staff seems to change quite often as do the duty managers, several times a day, so communication and continuity across staff members can be bad. We tried the hotel restaurant pizza and it was very average. The view from my room and everything outside of the hotel was amazing. Many delicious restaurants, cafes and shopping are steps away and most importantly Takapuna Beach is spectacular. The beach is a short walk. I am glad I stayed in this beach area and not in the city central area in Auckland. We reserved an uber to puck us up in early mornings and out to the city center for out day trips. I loved Takapuna Beach.

Looks like the property is going through refurbishment at the moment. Restaurant isn’t open and I didn’t see any staff apart from the person in the front desk. They only service the room every 3 days and if you want it serviced more, you pay $35! Car parking too is steep at $30 per night, plenty of parking outside and is free after 6pm. Once a lovely hotel now looking tired and without much love. Hopefully all will be better than what it used to be after the refurbs

When I reserved, June 4th this year, I specifically asked about a hotel bar and restaurant as we planned to watch the AB's vs England there, I was told yes. On arriving I asked when would the bar open, to be told bar and restaurant closed for refurbishing! I also asked about the Gold Card discount and early booking fee, to be told I'd need to contact Expedia about that! Overall basically a very overpriced venue, $500.00 for 2 nights plus parking.More of a motel than a hotel. What can be done about this please? Thanks, Jane.

Reception welcome was wonderful. Top marks. Entry foyer very tired. We had to wash down our bathroom bench as it had large sticky rings on it. Really dirty ironing board cover. Surprised at now no breakfast option. We had been regular guests before moving to Wellington 8 years ago, and were amazed in the difference in that time. We needed to leave at 5.15 am for an early start, and we had to try 3 times to get the front door button to open for us.

No cleaning or vacuuming done. $35 surcharge for extra service. Not made aware that Bar and renstaurant closed for renovations. No VIP benefit offered. We got free coffee voucger because of issue with no room cleaning . 7 night stay paid for most expensjve room which was supposed to be including service. If left equipment we would clean room. Nice spa pool. No pool towels available or tea towels to dry dishes in kitchen. The shampoo bottles stock are so old that they broke in the shower when you opened them. Reception staff where not very friendly or helpful and stated they finished shift so no one to help after 4pm.
