The staff hospitality was OUTSTANDING. Welcoming and professional at the same time. I exercise and the exercise area was nice. The front desk staff person was a wealth of valuable needed information, I’d promote her to corporate. The dining room staff also gave quality service. Anytime I go back to Selma I’ll stay at the St James Hilton hotel.

Perfect location for overnight visit to Selma. Beautifully restored hotel with lovely rooms and a good restaurant on-site. Service and staff were excellent. Be prepared, however, that Selma is very economically depressed and will make you wonder what the March did for the people who still live there.

Although there was a heavy gas smell as we walked to our rooms, we were told, "No problem. It's only in the courtyard." The rooms surrounded the courtyard so, indeed, it was a problem. Although we were told breakfast came with the room, there was no breakfast available nor were we given any credit. No working TV. No TV remote. No working telephone. No one at checkout. Room keys expired before we checked out. The incidental charges of $50/room times 2 rooms ($100) were not used but still charged so I need to notify my credit card about having them removed. Hotel was being closed for renovations as we checked out.

The only issue we had was the fire alarm went off at 1:30am and staff did not know how to disarm it once they determined there was no fire, I totally agree that the fire department should have been called as they were, however guests should have been alerted not to panic in a more timely manner, otherwise the property is nicely maintained and the location is awesome!! Having a functional restaurant on the property would have been amazing as there are few places to choose from otherwise.

Loved staying in this historic hotel in this historic city. We were able to see the famous Edmund Pettus Bridge from our balcony. Our meal there was delicious and our stay was lovely. The only complaint I had was the coffee pot was not cleaned and didn’t work in our room and there was historic gas lamps in the courtyard that didn’t light but we could smell the gas coming from them. I alerted the front desk but it didn’t seem to be of concern to them.

The hotel is quite a bit of history. Unfortunately, our room (overlooking the river and the bridge) had a door handle problem to the balcony. They moved us to another room and made it right, so kudos to them. The restaurant & bar were closed for rennovations, but you could still sit in that area and have a beer. Call before you book (through March 2024) to see if they have re-opened the restaurant & bar.

The hotel is great, a little old and crusty in places, but that is part of its charm. Verandas are nice but need chairs. Parking is a little iffy, but I noticed police checking out the area all the time.

A bit worn down, ceiling pieces came down and the carpet wasn’t clean, but the balcony and the view on the bridge were excellent!

There was a cockroach in the toilet (still alive, but it had been there a while) to greet us, no light bulb in one of our two lamps, and no conditioner in the bottle when I went to take a shower. The nice woman who checked us in gave us the wrong room number also. There was someone in the room, so we had to go back downstairs to figure that out. Otherwise, the hotel is absolutely beautiful! It was hard to see at night though-more outdoor lighting on the hotel NAME should be prioritized.

My stay was awful. The room was very moist so everything was wet including the bathroom floor where i slipped and bust my behind, I called the front desk to see if someone could get the water up out the bathroom and the young lady informed me i could come down and get extra towels because housekeeping was not there. The sheets on the bed were damp the carpet dirty the room smelled like mold. They don't EVER have to worry about me again, worst trip stay I had thus far at a hotel.

Our bed spread was clean but stained ...looked kind of sketchy...the nightstand was not clean down the side next to the bed, the floor looked like it was not thoroughly vacuumed....it could have been a LOT cleaner. Old, historic, area could have been nice if it was CLEAN.

The room was smelly (from smoke, perhaps?) and the HVAC fan never turned off, making it not peaceful. There were multiple holes in the wall, cobwebs and dust on the headboards. The cheap plastic toilet seat was broken. There is only one light source in the room - a lamp by the bedside that was not connected to the light switch near the door. When I asked to be switched to a different room after the first night, I was refused. The public spaces are kept up well enough. But I did not enjoy my stay at all.

Their was no cable TV the whole week. I also went without internet for two days, which had me backed up at work, because I am a remote worker. The shower had hair and also the sink. When I decided to leave a day early to catch up on my work, they would not refund me for the last day. It was either stay in those conditions or leave, and I had to leave. I had to drive almost five hours to office, which I do not work from, just to finish out the week for one day. Then I had to turn around and drive seven hours back home. I lost a lot of money and time dealing with them, when it was their fault. I will never go back their. I have a few pictures and wished I would have taken more, but I had already cleaned the room myself. Hotels.com tried to get me back the refund for the last day, but the hotel refused to cooperate.

The building was bad rusty and outlets exposed through out the building. Bed was so hard and the rooms was dull and dark. Ceiling was stained carpets dirty. To $142 for one night I just expected more. I had my grandbabies,ago 2 twin boys. And it just didn’t feel safe But staff was very friendly and welcoming

This was not a good stay! There was a roach on our bed so they had to change our room. Once leaving the front desk person didn’t acknowledge us and say good morning or ask how our stay was. I’m big on customer service and she definitely needs customer service training. I will be calling corporate

This is a beautiful, historic hotel overlooking the Alabama River and the Edmund Pettus Bridge. It's only a block or two from the civil rights museum. The staff is friendly and very helpful and the rooms were clean and the beds comfortable. Our only quibble was that little things were wrong in each room - burned out light bulb in the bedside light; no cups or glasses for the coffee maker or taking pills, no replacement toilet paper. But staff was quick to provide what we needed when it was pointed out and we had a wonderful stay

The room was dated, the air conditioner unit was dusty and had mold . The windows were dirty. I only stayed because I was there on business and the

For a Hilton property, a number of little problems: inroom phone didn't work; TV had no reception (cable problem); no liquid soap in shower (but had conditioner and body lotion); 1 small bar soap; NO hair dryer; wifi code wouldn't log me in. Front desk staff DID offer us another room when the lack of phone was identified. Not enough attention to details by cleaning staff.

It’s a historic hotel with character. It was reminiscent of New Orleans so it has potential, however it’s Selma. The hotel is lovely and quaint. We felt like we were the only ones there. We certainly were the only ones in the dining room. The bed was fabulous and the room was spacious.

There was no lighting in the room other than bedside lamps. The staff was not very friendly. There was no seating in the room other than a desk chair, therefore there was no where for 2 people to sit and watch television or have a snack.

The staff is horrible! They charged my card for my 2 night stay, but I already paid in full 2 weeks prior via Expedia.com. When I called to dispute the charges, the front desk clerk lied about her name. I learned the truth after I asked to speak with the manager. I still have not received a callback regarding the issue, very disappointed. The staff is very unreliable, responsiveness is less than satisfactory. I will never stay here again.

Our stay was marred due to the fact that we had to wait over 30 minutes to check-out as there were no staff at the registration desk.

Very nice accommodations and renovations captured the elegance of the old Selma I remember when growing up. The staff members were professional, friendly & helpful. It has a beautiful courtyard with relaxing music, ideal for sitting outside and eating breakfast or having a glass of wine in the late afternoon (weather permitting). Very convenient location.

The place is beautiful and clean, the bed was beyond comfortable, and the staff could not have been more helpful. If you’re visiting Selma to see the Edmund Pettis Bridge, this is the place to stay

My booked room was unavailable. I called the morning of my stay to confirm my reservation. When I arrived, I was told the hotel was all booked up. It took more than one hour for a room to be found. The registration clerk was not present at the desk for periods of time. If I left the room, I could not use the key card to get back in the room. This room was damp and not fully equipped with a shower curtain, microwave or fridge as the room. This room caused my husband to sneeze constantly and become stuffed up nasally. We were finally moved to a better room at 8 pm that had a microwave, fridge, and nicely appointed sink and separate toilet room with shower. The lighting was poor in the toilet/ shower room. This caused us to miss the start of the event we were in town for that began at 7 pm. The clerk apologized and did give us a discount on the hotel room price. Also, the breakfast which is an additional cost was very disappointing consisting only of a packaged muffin, Greek yogurt with tiny cups of granola and cranberry; and small cup of blueberries with one sliced strawberry. The listed rating of Excellent (8.2) is not true at all!!

I completely adored the staff. They consistently went out of their way to support my comfort at the hotel and to enhance my very first visit to Alabama in my life...the birth place of my grandparents. Anthony at the front desk saw a car with the window down during a rain storm. He took it upon his self to cover the window with plastic to protect the car...it was my car and I am so grateful for his kindness to a stranger. I will definitely return for more of Barbaras stories about the Hotel and her general kindness. It was extraordinary and I will bring my sister along when I return for my book signing in the area. Very nice older hotel, glad to see that it is still in use. The property is clean and updated. Surrounding area of Selma is in pretty bad shape unfortunately.

The St. James is a lovely historical hotel with a friendly staff. If you stay, reserve a room on the river with a view of the bridge. Be sure to visit the Voting Rights Museum and the park/shop at the base of the bridge. We are so glad we visited the city. We just wish Selma could be revitalized because it deserves that. It’s sad to see that so many beautiful buildings have become run-down.

We liked the property itself which was an old legacy hotel with nice facilities. The area around was largely blighted with numerous buildings being torn or burned down whenever. Breakfast was just drinks, bread and a few muffins. At this price, I would expect more.

It's a nice property, however they did not have a free buffet style breakfast and no refrigerator in the room.

They need to do a better job describing the resturant. Theres not a breakfeast buffet. its a Continental

I love this hotel . The staff is always amazing . The restaurant is delicious. My room had several very dirt spots on the walls and the shower. Tile was missing in the shower and the bottom of the shower was dirty or stained. The hotel was full so there really was no fixing this or changing rooms

Convenient location, great river view, dining and bar in hotel good. City too depressed, roads signage bad.
