Montcalm Brewery, London City

Check in experience was both good and bad. One of the receptionists completely ignored me as she walked back & forth without so much as even a nod as I was standing waiting. When I was eventually seen to, the 2nd receptionist was fantastic. Room service menu was decent, but despite calling several times for 40mins I couldn’t even get an answer on the 2 x numbers provided on the menu. So ate elsewhere. Room was nice, clean and a good size for London. Location also fairly good for public transport links.

Club lounge is a joke. No ambience and atmosphere. Food quality not on par with other 5 star lounges.

The only downside was the pub ajoining. It wasn’t very clear, where breakfast or dining was and there was limited seating in the pub.

No bar or restaurant at the property as they claim, it’s not worth 5 star, they claim local bar outside the hotel as theirs , very disappointing as websites claims wrong, rooms were good but overall, I wouldn’t be back,

Not a bad hotel, maybe a little bit tired and in need of a refresh. Sadly, when we returned from the theatre the bars were well closed and no option of a nightcap, no mini-bar and only the offer of Uber eats / Deliveroo. We only wanted a drink. Convenient for the Elizabeth line for our onward journey the following morning, but not as great as I had hoped.

Hotel is a short walk from the Barbican tube station. An impressive entrance lobby and while well appointed, the rooms are a little tired around the edges. The hotel would benefit from a more spacious bar area and a proper bar. The breakfast was good quality with plenty of choice and nicely situated in the adjoining Chiswell Street Dining Rooms. Throughout the stay the staff were very friendly and helpful.

Well situated for central London. Lifts weren't working so was a bit of a warren to get to our room with cases!

Room's fridge did not work. Light was out in bathroom. Curtains in room too heavy to draw, no cord. Hotel did not have bar or restaurant.

Staff are very friendly especially the front house staff. Would have been nice if the bar was open but it wasn’t too bad. Centre of London there was plenty around so we didn’t stress. :)

This hotel falls miserably short of its claimed 5-star status. My family and I stayed in a suite for 2 nights last weekend, and it was a decision I deeply regret. Despite my prior emails and a reminder during check-in, the extra beds for my kids were left unmade. Considering the sweltering weekend, we desperately needed the A/C, but it seemed to have only two settings: either blowing warm air or turning the room into an icy tundra. On Saturday evening, when I attempted to order room service for my children, I was flabbergasted to be informed that such a service didn't exist, despite the presence of a supposedly reputable restaurant downstairs. The staff nonchalantly suggested that I order takeout instead. And as if these disappointments weren't enough, there was no turndown service, leaving us with damp towels each morning. This was an utterly unpleasant experience overall, and I strongly advise anyone accustomed to genuine 5-star hotels to steer clear of this woeful establishment.

Service, food, communal areas were perfect. I asked if the hotel was accessible and was assured we could get the wheelchair to the room door and was assured we could. This was not possible due to several flights of stairs. The Barbican Duplex Suite I booked was not up to the standard I expect from a 5 star hotel. Blood stain on the wall! 50% of the light switches/sockets did not function correctly, the controls for the bath and shower were broken, the shaving mirror was hanging off the wall, Electrical items had out of date PAT tests. The room was advertised with a King size bed but had a standard double. The stairs in the room have plastic trim which was cracked and very painful to step on without shoes. I spent a good chunk of extra money on this room and I was very disappointed with it's condition. When I brought these concerns to the management I was advised there was nothing they could do except maybe offer a good deal on my next stay. But they couldn't say for sure.

The hotel room was decent and comfortable enough for a short stay. The building has an unusual layout, which made it a bit confusing to navigate. The room was somewhat clean, though there was dust in the corners, an old carpet, and a few crooked fixings/sockets on the walls that made it feel a bit neglected. Overall, not terrible, but it could definitely use some updates and a more thorough cleaning.

When we checked in there was no offer of breakfast or facilities within hotel. It was a ‘here is your room key’ and that was it. We discovered a used contact lense in the bed, however the bathroom was nice.

I keep getting caught out on how much London and location creeps the prices up. This hotel was fine. But that’s all. I expected a little more luxury but it was there once we got to the room itself. It smelt of damp and the fixtures were a little tired. But it was warm and quiet and did the job it needed.

Staff were welcoming, both check-in and check-out were simple . When I reported a problem with my room it was fixed promptly with no fuss. The room & bathroom were clean, comfortable and well appointed. This was my second stay at the Montcalm Brewery and wouldn't hesitate to stay again.

Lovely hotel. Excellent customer service. Slight improvement required on the cleaning, few hairs around the bath tub but easily cleaned. The radio in the room didnt work but again no real issue. Sencond stay here, will stay again

Rooms were not properly inspected and lacked professional housekeeping

If you could score this hotel by the reception area alone you would say it was a beautiful, elegant hotel. Sadly once out of reception its a very different story and a long way short from the 5* theu claim. I was in room 001. The room smelt very musty as though it had been closed up for a long time. The room was small but that wasnt the main problem. It was ground floor and with windows that were low and right out on to the busy street. Basically the curtains had to be closed from the moment I arrived unless you want to feel like you are in a shop window. Not great at 3pm on a sunny afternoon. Also ot was so noisy in the evening being right on the road. The carpet areas around the bathroom to bedroom carpet bar were poor. However possibly the worst bit of the room was the tiniest sbower cubicle in the world. It was set in to a corner and when washing my haor both elbows were banging against the walls it was so snall. No space to relax and felt like being in a caravan bathroom despite being nicely tiled. I was so disappointed as expected so much from what were clearly just their best photos online. My room was nothing like what was advertised. Location was great ut it shows you cant judge a book by its cover. Certainly wouldnt have been happy had I taken my wife there as a 5* treat.

Only stayed one night but couldn’t fault anything. The staff were very helpful rooms spotless

WiFi was horrible. Room had a weird smell. All the lights didn’t work. No bathroom counter. Fire alarms kept going off.

Hotel is in a great location and easy to get to. Rooms are a bit dated and some of the furniture is a bit worn and scuffed. Bathroom had loose floor tiles and the air conditioning didn't work at all. Overall very comfortable but certainly not 5 star.

I rarely leave negative reviews, but I feel compelled to share how uncomfortable our stay was. The room had no air conditioning, which in the middle of summer made it absolutely unbearable. We were sweating through the night and couldn’t get proper rest. To make things worse, the phones in the room didn’t even work, meaning we couldn’t contact staff directly in an urgent situation – a serious safety concern. When we finally did speak to someone, we weren’t offered a new room or proper resolution – just a tiny fan that did nothing but blow around hot air. For the price and reputation of this hotel, the lack of basic comfort and safety measures was shocking. It’s unacceptable not to have functioning AC or a working phone line, and the lack of care in resolving the issue was extremely disappointing. Would not recommend – especially during warmer months.

This hotel is impressive on arrival in the lobby but the rooms are dark and dated. We had a twin room and the beds were ok but not great. Staff were friendly and helpful which made up for it. We wanted somewhere cheap and close to our event and it was just for one night. Work and stay just outside of London so not too fussed. Would have been disappointed if I was booked for a special weekend.

An odd mixture of hotel experience: super friendly helpful staff, and modern fittings in room. But, room smelt stuffy (had previous guests been smoking?), windows were closed and although we opened then, the room remained hot, even though cool outside. We could not switch off bathroom fan, despite trying everything except phoning reception (wish I had)

Although the room was okay and the staff were pleasant, an issue regarding a breakfast charge at check out really dampened our experience. We were asked after we had checked in if we would like breakfast the following morning, which we decided we would, and it was explained to me that the charge would be taken from my security deposit. My husband was then very ill overnight and therefore felt unable to eat that morning- I explained this at check out and that we wouldn't be having breakfast as we needed to get him home. I have since been advised that the £38 charge for two breakfasts will be kept by the hotel and not refunded to us. Considering no food was actually cooked for us and wasted, I feel this is really unfair. Also, we didn't even book breakfast with the initial room charge- we just simply verbally agreed to it at check in, and nowhere in the terms and conditions on the hotel website does it state that breakfast is non refundable. We have been advised it is 'standard procedure', which in this instance certainly comes across as the company simply being greedy in terms of money. After emailing to complain, I have been offered a complimentary breakfast with our 'next stay'. Safe to say that won't be happening... What a disappointing end to our trip- really poor customer service and generally just a rubbish way to treat someone. Will not be using this chain ever again out of principle.

On arrival there seemed to be an issue with payment. I had fully paid expedia and had confirmation. I thought it had been resolved, but on checking out i was delayed for almost an hour, whilst reception staff tried to deal with the problem, re the payment, No chance for breakfast as was now too late. Had to leave for an appointment, was told that the duty manager would look into the problem whilst i was out, i said i would return for bags in three hours, on my return the payment problem had still not been resolved and i spent almost another hour trying to reach a conclusion. At this point i complained about my disrupted plans and my wish to be compensated. I left the hotel and was told that a manager would call me on Monday morning, 16th Jan, but as yet i have still not been contacted. So must say the service and commitment to helping a guest resolve a problem has been very very poor, and not what i would have expected from such a nice hotel.

Nice hotel, room was ok, bathroom was nice. Good amenities and close to tube. Concierge was abrupt, rude and unhelpful… not what I thought they were about. Reception staff all very pleasant and helpful. Due to concierge behaviour I wouldn’t return, mainly as reception wouldn’t direct us to our room and made the concierge take us, we were only up one floor and with the attitude I would rather have taken myself!

Absolutely brilliant from start to finish staff were absolutely amazing, had a double rather than a booked twin but changed the room instantly without any issues. Concierge was really pleasant, couldn't fault it apart from didn't have a 24hr bar which admittedly is few and far between now. Raissa was so welcoming and genuine, will definitely be coming back

Really positive experience. Would highly recommend! Fantastic location, so easy to access the Elizabeth Line which was really helpful for us travelling with a toddler. Lovely welcome touch and the staff were super friendly, they could not have been kinder to our little one!

Property itself is fine, but Montcalm seem incapable of administrating bookings or taking payments properly beware of being charged twice without explanation.

From the initial interaction from the reception staff, to the final good bye from the gentleman on the door as we left, every single member of staff was courteous, polite, and accommodating. We stayed in the WOW Suit which had a lot of space. We found that there were a lack of plug sockets near the bed. If I was going to suggest an improvement, it would be for a bigger TV to be installed. The breakfast was very nice. A good selection of different items, and they were all fresh. No old fruit in this fruit salad. :) I prefer poached eggs over scrambled, but this isn't easy in a buffet style breakfast. We were invited to use their joining pub for an evening meal, but the pub staff say they are always busy on Sundays which results on many hotel guests not being able to the pub restaurant; something they have told the hotel but they do not tell the guests. The concierge was able to suggest other local services to use.

Fantastic hospitality from all staff who treated you like the highest vip guest they have.

This in a great location for the city but it also has excellent transport links for the West End and theatreland.

Had a great stay while in the city for work. Well located - short walk to many pubs, cafes, shopping, etc. Staff was very friendly and attentive and the breakfast buffet was great.

Tucked into the city of London, immediately bext to the Barbican, this has been a pleasant place to stay. Checkin was speedy and the room clean, spacious and functional. The bathroom was huge with a large walk-in shower. The room quiet at night, being away from the road. The only downside is finding Nescafe sachets as a coffee substitute in the room. However, real coffee us plentiful a short walk away.

The hotel is in a nice area and close to moorgate tube station. The room was clean .the staff was very pleasant and the breakfast very good.

This hotel is ideally situated for my needs. It's a 10min walk from Liverpool St. Station and a 2 minute walk from The Barbican Centre. Plenty of options for food and drink near by. I have stayed here on 6 different occasions and I love it as it has a nice relaxed atmosphere and very friendly and helpful staff. A special mention for Roshan who was brilliant.

I've stayed at this hotel a couple of times. It's super quiet, the beds are wonderfully comfortable, and it is really convenient for public transport, either to the airports or Canary Wharf. I'd definitely recommend it.

Furnished and styled to a good standard. Although this was the entry-level room, it had very generous amenities and square meterage. Pricing was more competitive than other available and lowly-rated central hotels. Even on a weekend rate. Staff: 5/5. Every member of staff was caring and accommodating. The girl with the sparkly eyelashes on the reception, the kind maids checking we had everything we needed, the friendly man guarding the barbican rooms. Everyone was wonderful. One thing pulls the whole rating down a star. So disappointing! Because I had enjoyed the hotel so much during my two nights, I decided to book breakfast… I had my receipt inspected twice to make sure I had paid but maybe they should have paid more attention to the empty coffee jars and chafing dishes. 5 minutes after paying, I was greeted by 1 sausage, 2 grizzled rinds of bacon, a gritty pot of coffee grinds... there were multiple patrons arriving for food so there is no excuse to have sold breakfast to these people if goods were not going to be replenished. It wasn't even 10 am - I paid £40 and I felt totally ripped off.

It was very good value for a night’s stay midweek and the room was comfortable. It was quite noisy until well after midnight. Breakfast was quite expensive for a standard buffet and the coffee was not great.

The hotel was very nice but I paid an extra 50 pound for breakfast in morning but it was stone cold there was no mushrooms or fried egg or other items that said was included so we was very disappointed ☹️
