Hotel Ottumwa

The front entrance stairs need fixed- they are not level and I almost lost my balance. That’s really the only problem to be honest.

Very convinient place to stay! Great restaurant and bar!

Breakfast was very good. Hotel was clean & quiet. Definitely dated but worth the stay. It was walkable distance to the venue we were attending. Shower had wonderful pressure & plenty of hot water. One of the delights of the room. Tom Tom's the bar at the hotel came in clitch with all night pizzas & nicely priced drinks. We would definitely stay again if we were in the area.

Hotel Ottumwa is a great older hotel in downtown Ottumwa. As it is an older hotel it is not exactly state of the art, but the service is great and the hotel is clean. It also has a great lounge and restaurant. They also have pizza available throughout the night which is great if we roll into town late.

Blood on the wall and heat didnt work in first room. Requested new room, 2nd room had connecting doors with antique unsecure locks. Possible homeless people who muttered nonsense in the lobby. There are stairs at every entrance. Impossible to get luggage cart through the doors and hallways. It looked super cute and boutique online, just run down and dirty in person.

Tom Tom's pub had a great old time atmosphere and great food options.

The hotel was very nostalgic and was like a trip back in time. Food was great and the staff was friendly. The elevator was very slow and there was no desk in the room, but that was part of the old time charm. Only real negative was the ice machine was noisy and my room was right next to it. I will stay there again.

I would like to start out that the front desk staff and kitchen manager were very friendly and professional. From there, the stay was not so great. My first room had some sort of roaches in it. I first saw one when the first night, but I can overlook one bug considering I had just come in off the road on a hot summer night. I saw another one later in my stay. I requested housekeeping to be safe, but housekeeping never came. I had a huge work schedule, so I was not able to move hotels, and the room was otherwise clean, so I stayed but decided not to eat at the hotel, despite free breakfast as part of the amenities. The third roach and I asked the housekeeper I saw in the hall if they could send maintenance to my room and told her of the bugs. She kind of stared at me and said maintenance was off that day. I went downstairs for a new room. Again, the staff at the desk was very nice, and said they would get my things moved to the new room, since I had to work a long day in the heat. I returned at 10:30pm, and nope. I had to move all my things myself. I was on the top floor, so I had to wait for the very slow elevator, go get a key card, and move everything myself from a bug-infested room late at night. My new room had a very off-putting smell, and there were stains on the furniture. The fixtures were clean, but the AC filter had not been changed in some time. Combuned with the filthy carpets in the halls and grimy tiles in the lobby, it is clear maintenance is a joke.

Great breakfast included. The hotel in general is time-worn but clean and comfortable.

Staff was friendly. The room was clean. Close enough to walk to get food or just to look around.

It was really dirty someone peed in the elevator and you could tell that the bed had been slept in

Stayed here before, will likely stay here again, but was disappointed in the smell of the elevator, the tiles in our hotel room bathroom were lifting up, and the couch had a huge stain on it. It's a beautiful hotel with lots of history, so I hope for a grant, or Gordon Ramsey, because it could be just as beautiful again.

I didn’t like the fact I could smell cigarette smoke in one of the other rooms on the floor I was on, that continued through my whole stay. Another thing that irked me was at approximately 8:30 am housekeeping attempted to gain access to my room luckily it was locked with the latch device, I came to the door to see who it was and she said “I’ll be back in a few seconds” not even an apology, and besides check out is not until 11am according to what I read, so why rush people out?

Clean, I’ve reviewed this hotel before and it’s always my go to hotel in ottumwa it’s good value for money.

Carpets are stained big time. Very old building. Stunk like cigarettes in the entrance

Very small rooms. We had a four day stay and when we asked for the room to be cleaned we had to go down to the lobby to pick up the towels. They don’t make beds That bothered me. Bathroom is 2 feet away from bathroom. So if one of us went to the bathroom, the light would wake you or the sound of piss hitting into the toilet. Won’t be returning there

Nice stay in a very old building. Staff was great. Beds could be updated as it sagged in the middle but overall it was a very pleasant stay. Hot water took a long time to heat up but I assume it had something to do with both we were in the very last room on the very top floor so it takes a while to make the trip up from the hot water heater and also the hotel was very busy that night. Overall though the stay was great and the free breakfast was amazing.

Mattress was terrible. Really lumpy with no support. Should be replaced. No maid service on weekends, apparently.

Overall a very nice stay and good price for this hotel. Both the staff and other guests were very nice. Its great they offer breakfast and have food options on site. The internet isn't what I'd call fast but its reliable and stable, I had no issues doing anything I needed to online. The bed was comfy and room was quiet. The bathroom is small as others have stated, but it was very clean and provided a nice shower. The negatives would be the initial smell of the building and the fact that my room had the AC turned off on arrival which made it very hot and lacking ventilation which caused it to be smelly. its not a bad smell like stale cigarettes, just of an old building. On my second day I was completely used to it and no longer smelled it. Which is good. I do worry about the smell getting in my clothes but its probably fine. Im going to stay there again for sure, I already have another booking. The convenience of food options and reliable internet is more than most modern hotels can offer. Theres also a liquor store a block away and the canteen restaurant right across the road.

The trash truck at 1am woke us up but that is not on the hotel. The breakfast is different. I am used to going up and getting whatever I want, but they have limited choices. However, it is cooked to order and was good. Just a bit weird. It is a restaurant as well as the breakfast for the hotel. They suggested leaving a tip because that is not covered in the free breakfast. Glad they told us. Overall it was a pleasant stay. Air conditioning was good and cold and constant fan is awesome for me to sleep better.

It’s a historic hotel that is very clean with modernish furnishings. The beds are updated and comfy. The other furniture is not new, but is clean and looks nice. Room heater/air updated and very quiet. Room size very spacious. Breakfast is small menu, but they cook to order and was very tasty. Fun experience and I would stay again.

I like this hotel and have stayed here several times. It’s old, which I think gives it a certain charm. It also makes for thick plaster walls which keep things quiet. Only issue with the room was that the towel rack was just about to come off the wall. When we first walked in there was a pile of towels on the bathroom floor; we assumed they were left from the previous guest. Then we realized they had fallen off the leaning towel rack. The bed was very comfortable. I love the ceiling fan!

Friendly staff. Clean room but did have a bit of a musty type smell. Room was nice size but the bathroom was small compared to more modern hotels. Bed was comfortable. The breakfast was good. Overall for one night stay.

My stay was only for 1 night and it was good. Did not need service from the staff other than checking in. That took longer than I thought it would.

Other than after checking in and going up to the room on the fifth floor and the key failed to open the door and had to go back to have it remedied, all was good.

Front desk and food service staff were great! Decided to extend my stay and the manager adjusted my nightly rate accordingly, which saved money, and was much appreciated.

Nice hotel, stayed just one night to rest midway on our way to Missouri - arrived late and check in was smooth. Room was clean, beds super comfy. Breakfast was included in the morning which was good. Would definitely stay here again!

I was pleased that, after accidentally leaving my watch in my room after checking out, it was mailed to me at my home address. A pleasant stay in Ottumwa!

Initially we were favorably impressed. After 3 nights our opinion changed. This was a great hotel in its prime but has since fallen on hard times! Understaffed with maid services only every other day. Employees are not trained properly making things chaotic. Bathroom drains did not drain. No decaffeinated coffee! Procedures for free breakfast convoluted! Would love to see the hotel survive but don’t see how that can happen!🥲☹️

My only complaint was I stayed 4 days and never had maid service in my room No clean towels, coffee supplies, trash emptied or bed straightened. The breakfast staff was very good.

Hotel Ottumwa has so much potential but unfortunately was not a place I would recommend. The staff are very friendly but many times the reception is totally empty and a person has to wait 5-10 minutes before someone assists you. This becomes quite a hassle since the keycards for the rooms never work and one is constantly having to ask for them to be fixed so that you can get into the room. Once you walk towards your room the hallways reek of cigarettes. And unfortunately the rooms are not too much better. The beds are clearly old and not comfortable to sleep on and if you are sensitive to smells you will walk out with a headache. I didn’t once have warm water when wanting to shower and the water pressure was terrible. Unfortunately I would not recommend this property if asked.

Well maintained for older property. Sketchy crowd always present just outside on the street, but.friendly enough. Enjoyed.the.location,. walking downtown and by the river.

Great old hotel with lots of characters and charm. Situated in downtown made it convenient to walk around. Great breakfast choices include with our stay was a great bonus. Would recommend if you were staying in Ottumwa.

Easy walk from Amtrak with desk open upon late arrival. Nice breakfast in hotel restaurant included and we were able to store our luggage at hotel until train departure. Good place to get a night’s bed rest in an historic hotel on a cross country train trip.

Very large rooms. Unique hotel stay, a step back in time with all amenities of 21st century. Enjoyed having a “cooked for you” rather than buffet breakfast. No need to drive for dinner or drinks, Tom Tom Tap had it all. Nice area for an evening walk.

I love the older style of the building. The tile work in the lobby is wonderful. A very unique stay and I'll definitely keep it in mind on future trips! Pro tip: the biscuits and gravy on the breakfast menu is top shelf!

We enjoyed coming back to our home town and reminiscing. Hotel Ottumwa was the perfect location for us. The made to order breakfast was fantastic and all of the staff were so friendly and helpful.
