This hotel requires major refurbishment. The rooms are tired and in some areas unsanitary. I had two quite troubling problems whilst there. Firstly, the AC broke in my room a few days into my stay. After a day of waiting for an engineer I was offered a new room - fair enough. But in the meantime I’d endured temperatures above 24*C in the middle of winter. This is because the rooms have no windows, so loss of AC means loss of airflow. The second main issue came about when I went to wash my clothes. All of the washers were full of towels and/or water, some resembling wells rather than washing machines. The dryers were full of wet towels. The laundry room is in the corner of the car park/ basement, the machines are rusty and instead I took the bus the next day to find a decent self service laundrette. Not ideal having to take half a day out on a long trip when all I needed was to do some washing. Positives: there aren’t many, but the staff are reasonably welcoming and helpful. They didn’t charge any deposit etc to my card. The location is pretty good at the top of Queen St - the hill takes a bit of getting used to.

Dirty room with other guests items under the bed, poor overall condition of hotel room and elevators, bathroom faucet and vanity falling apart, furniture rickety and aged, laundry facilities poorly maintained and not all machines working. I would not recommend this hotel and have no idea how it got an 8 rating on Expedia!

The bathroom had a lot of mold and generally felt dirty. I didn't like that they demanded a photo copy of my identification as this is against the law. The beds were comfortably however there was a bad smell in the room that never left and a lot of dust behind the cabinet. We wont be staying there again.

Friendly staff, but the Hotel needs a clean up and maybe new linen, curtains, etc, our bedding was ripped at the end and curtains and chairs stained. Also the bathroom was not the cleanest Ive seen. Our room had no air-conditioning and we moved to a different room, was very hot and muggy.

The room was not clean, there where stains on the curtains and stains on the chairs. The room overall was worn out with freying carpet. The phone did not work and when I reported this I was told it's a weekend so they can't do anything about it, so I was not able to contact room service from my room and had to go down to reception when I needed anything, very frustrating. When I pulled the curtains to close them there were a pair of socks stuck in the corner (they did not belong to me) so the room had obviously not been vacuumed or sufficiently cleaned. The walls are thin and there was alot of noise. I could hear everything happening outside and in the hallway especially room service knocking multiple times on everyones door in the morning yelling room service. The bed sheets, pillows and towels were clean which gave me a bit of relief and got me through the 3 night stay. If I was with my family I would have checked out immediately and stayed in a different hotel. As it was me on my own I made it work. When my room was "cleaned" they only replaced the towels, cleared the rubbish bins and pulled the sheets up, they didn't make the bed and didn't replace the tea, sugar or coffee. The bed was also two single beds pushed together made to look like a large king bed.it was very uncomfortable as you can feel the join of the beds as you move towards the middle of the bed. For someone who has stayed in a number of hotels this stay was very underwhelming. I would not go back.

I was disappointed by the beds, they were supose to be double bed, but it was just two single beds stuck together and was very uncomfortable. The spec was much smaller than expected. The shower was disappointing as well, the shower head was very outdated.

The air conditioning power and user control needs improvement but I noticed a bunch of fans sitting in the hallway so I suspect they're aware of the issue and doing their best to resolve that. We simply brought one into our room for the night. Also, the body wash ran out in the shower which was a bummer. The king bed was actually two single beds pushed together but we found that to be really comfortable, we both had such a good sleep. The lady at reception was great. Overall, for the price, we were happy.

one of the female receptionists were really not helpful and kinda rude, I checked in the evening at 3rd Jan 2025. I was struggling with the WIFI as it was connected, but can't access the internet. The log in screen popped out only on the reception area, but not in my level (level 3). When I was trying to talk that to the receptionist, first I have to wait 2 minutes before she hang up her mobile phone and stop giggling. Her phone conversation, from what I heard, seemed a private/random chat. And when I explained to her, she said "OK, come down to the receiption area and use the WIFI there". My god, does she realise the customers books a hotel nor for going to the lobby to use the hotels' WIFI? She also said, "talk to the receptionist tomorrow when I am not in charge". The second day when I talk this WIFI issue to another male receptionist, he solved the problem by just resetting the router and he literally described what the issue is and how he can solve the problem.

Without warning, the receptionist scanned and photocopied both my passport and credit card, which immediately raised alarm bells. When I questioned it, she said she’d delete the scanned email, but I found the whole thing very concerning and unprofessional — there’s no reason to copy full card details instead of using a secure chip-and-pin system. The air conditioning in our room was also broken. Despite calling reception three times during the night, we were told it was controlled remotely and they’d try to fix it, but it never worked. The next day, with the room temperature sitting above 26°C, we called again and were finally moved to a new room where the AC worked properly. The area around Queen Street felt a bit rough at night, with quite a few homeless people about, though that’s not the hotel’s fault. We did appreciate being offered a free late check-out until 11am, but overall, this wasn’t a pleasant stay. I wish we’d read other reviews beforehand — seems we weren’t the only ones to face AC issues and other unusual problems here.

The concierge made things quite difficult when I arrived. There was a cold acknowledgement of my arrival and instantly I was met with scepticism as to my belonging there. I was clearly judged on my appearance. He demanded my physical identification and when it was clear that I had none, he offered no other option but to deny accomodation. After a while he decided that a photo of my ID would suffice but by then I was already deflated. The room "looked" nice, but there were no robes, no slippers as promised in the offer. We had to cook our dinner in the oven because there was no frying pan. When we asked for one, they sent this up with an employee who told us not to use the oven because it's not good👀. When we asked why the range hood wasn't working he said that it only works when you use the job, not the oven. Next things there's a loud hum coming from the bathroom and when we enquired about that we were told that it only made a sound because we had the range hood on. Lies. That humming sounded all night and disturbed our sleep. Absolutely disappointed! Worst stay in a long while. And I've stayed in many different places!

The room, location building was amazing, and this is a 5/5. But after the first terrible night I found one of the single beds pushed together to make a queen had collapsed completely (ie the base was broken in the middle slats), leaving me to sleep like a banana. I advised reception the next morning, but found no activity or feedback had taken place (or that it had been logged) when I got back that night. So with no help (maintenance, boards, another room) or interest forthcoming from VR I went to plan two. I was unable to pull the mattress on the bed to sleep on the floor (ie no spare sheets or blankets), so I laid the dinning chair back horizontally under the middle of the mattress to stop the collapse and had a reasonable nights sleep. Other than that, I'd happily stay again, restaurant onsite, secure parking onsite, amazing rooms, many amazing restaurants outside the front door. Never a dull moment travelling, I guess this just adds to the rich life stories one has :) . Best wishes.

Staff were good, no problems with check in or check out. Our room was great - a good size, and was clean and tidy. Didn't expect all the kitchen, which was a bonus even though only used the fridge and jug. Loved the location and would stay here again.

Friendly staff and good facilities. Near top of hill on main road into CBD, so easy 15/20 minute walk to CBD/waterfront but take bus or taxi to avoid walk up hill. Limited good restaurants in close area but OK for quick/burger style. Small supermarkets very close.

Good central location near University, close to Pier and downtown, is walkable (10-15 minutes), bus stops are also nearby. Was clean and front desk was always staffed. We stayed during off season, so noise was not an issue, but if the street had lots of noise, it might be an issue for some

Great location. Same outfit as Ascotia, but higher standard of room. Staff were all friendly. Breakfast was $20/morning which seems quite reasonable. My preference is to stay here when I visit Auckland.

The restaurant was amazing and very reasonable. Room had self catering convenience and very reasonably priced. Our rooms heating didnt work but we were given a mini heater. Overall a very good service.
