Pros I loved the high bunk beds. Staff are very nice and friendly and restrooms and dormitory was very clean. Cons No kitchen not even a microwave. What's the point of offering a fridge but nothing to heat up your food with. Dormitory area was at least 10 degrees colder than other areas such as lobby, cafe and reception area. I was told that temperature is controlled and must fit everybody not sure why the dormitory had to be colder than anywhere else lots of people were gathering. Lighting was also controlled so unless you woke up after 8am, you will not be able to see anything. I nearly scalded myself trying to make coffee in the dark. In the end I opened the fridge door and nearby restroom for light. Other people having to pack in the dark and bumping into things. No access to light is just ridiculous. This is a hostel trying not to be a hostel. If you have dorm rooms with bunk beds then you're a hostel therefore a kitchen must be provided...and lights at anytime would be good too.

Great location, centrally located in downtown Portland with easy access to all public transportation. Very organized with a well-informed staff. Lockers available to store your possessions, but remember to bring your own lock.

This hotel was great. Stayed for one night prior to flying home from Portland and had a really good experience. Stayed in a suite and the room was lovely. We were able to utilize the rooftop area which was really nice on a perfect evening, and the lobby area is comfortable and stylish with a cafe that’s open until 10. As others have mentioned, the neighborhood is going through a rough time- there are many people experiencing homelessness and addiction in the area. That said, the hotel is very on top of guest safety and very reassuring, and oddly, in our experience- the area felt better the later in the evening it got, as the nightlife options opened up and there was more foot traffic. There is an option for paid parking 2 blocks away if you want to ensure the safety of your vehicle (we opted for this as we had a rental car).

Cute small hotel, well managed and clean as a whistle. Also cute Tiny bar and espresso in the comfortable lobby. Awesome outdoor rooftop lounge. Room very simple and small but functions well. Shared bathroom thing was no problem, never saw anyone else there. A bit of noise at night.. people, sirens, trains, the urban experience; they have earplugs in the rooms. Neighborhood is pretty bombed out with homeless urban decay yet generally felt non aggressive at least, and tons of fantastic indie cafes bakeries bagels chocolate donuts restaurants etc within a 10 min walk radius. Hotel can get Secure car park a block away. Would definitely stay again.

The staff and hotel itself was great! The hotel is secure with the front doors requiring a keypass for entry. The cafe had excellent coffee and the rooftop area was awesome to sit and have dinner and some drinks. Unfortunately, the Old Town/Chinatown area isn’t that great. It’s not a place that I felt safe to leave the hotel after dark and there was a lot of homelessness and open drug use around the hotel. That said, I saw numerous security guards and police patrolling at night, so if you’re looking for somewhere to base yourself, it’s very convenient to trains and buses, just maybe don’t go out at night.

The Society Hotel was clean, service was great, and our private room was well designed. The rooftop and cafe were nice additions so you could stay in and have what you need at night. The location was central, however, there were quite a few interesting characters located on the street immediately outside the hotel. Overall great experience.

Location is great. Old Chinatown area has so much to do, see and eat at. Walkable to the Public market, shopping, eating, book stores, doughnuts, did i say amazing eateries? Unique old hotel. One thing that was a bit different is that the reserved parking was quirky and we addressed that with staff amd they resoonded in kind and appreciated the feedback. Front desk staff presented with kindness at all times. It was like they wanted you to be a permanent part of The Society family. We will stay at The Society again.

A great historic hotel with excellent and friendly staff.The hotel is beautifully updated and clean. We rented a room with shared bathroom but don’t let that deter you as the bathrooms are large and spotless.One of our best experiences on our holiday and we’ll definitely return next year.

Some of the nicest people are at the front desk. Seriously, the nicest people. The rooms are super clean and comfortable. The rooftop sitting area is also very cool. The beds are comfy.

I originally had a reservation with a hotel chain nearby but they were so rude I cancelled and came here instead and wow am I glad I did! This is my new spot to stay in PDX. Everyone is so nice! It’s very clean too. I love the roof!

I had a wonderful stay at this hotel. It was clean and the bunks were spacious. The staff were lovely to deal with and the cafe is a nice touch. Shout out to Max for making great drinks!

I love repurposed buildings, and this one did not disappoint. Large room, neatly done. Linens were fresh and didn't smell like anything, which is lovely. Slept well.Really liked that they were environmentally friendly. Good, but small menu items. Great rooftop deck. And, a history lesson taking the stairs. Only thing missing was a chair in the room. It's a good location for many of what Portland offers, but you do need to understand the neighborhood you are in. Safety was not an issue.

The Society Hotel is a great place to stay if you’re looking for the old town experience. It was noisy though, sound travels through vents and the area was busy on the weekend. Street cleaners and garbage trucks start running around 4am! Parking was only available our second night from the hotel partner and the public garage is close but the night we parked there another vehicle was vandalized. Homeless folks were outside-for a first time visitor, it was overwhelming and eye opening.

Even premium room was just sort of an empty room with a bed. No tv, no furniture (aside from a couch in the corner), no attempt to make bathroom friendlier than a gym shower, left feeling like i overpaid tbh. Lobby and cafe were nice though, staff were friendly.

The neighborhood is pretty rough, but I'm a public defender and wasn't terribly concerned. The problem was the room was tiny and had no bathroom. This information is available on Expedia, but it's not something you generally need to check so we were very surprised. When we went to the desk, we were asked if we wanted to "upgrade" to a room with a toilet. We said no thank you and returned the key. So far, they have been unwilling to give us a refund.

The hotel itself is really nice. The lobby is lovely, cute atmosphere, and has a cafe - and the staff was all chill and friendly ppl! The area nearby is walking distance to eateries and such, but there is a large number of unhoused people around which my Lyft driver warned could be dangerous to navigate at times. Personally, I walked down a few blocks (alone) for pizza and doughnuts, and I was totally fine. The doors stay locked and you have to keycard in for entry and to use the elevator, so it stays secure. The little rooftop is such a fun addition to get a view of the city and is open til 2am. I stayed in a private room with shared bathroom so the fact they give you bathrobes to use while there is really great too

I enjoyed the bunk beds, it was sturdy and I felt safe even though I was 9 ft above the ground, also the mattress was plush. If you’re a light sleeper bring ear plugs bc you will hear other people snoring

Lots of things nearby, which is nice. The area the hotel is in is seedy. This is more a problem in downtown Portland, in general. However, the general condition is reflected upon the hotel. Staff were friendly but inattentive. I won’t stay here again.

Fantastic place to crash for short stay, get to know new friends, near the bus transfer station and transport to get around town, great cafe breakfast, fantastic staff. Minor downside which is uncontrollable if you are uncomfortable with homeless ppl.

I really enjoyed my stay at The Society Hotel. The location is just excellent. Easy to get around and close to many terminals, the coffeeshop, my bunk bed, and the bathrooms are clean too. All the staff are super accommodating and approachable, especially Tyler and Andrew. I will surely check in there again whenever I visit Portland in the future. Highly recommended.

I really did like my stay at the hotel. There was a slight hiccup checking in, but that was my only really issue. I love the bar/coffee downstairs and rooftop area. I think the biggest issue is outside the hotel where does feel unsafe and parking is inconvenience. I did find parking, but I wasn’t sure what would happen to car since there’s a club and people hanging out in public parking. That’s nothing the hotel can control, but circumstances of the location. Still very good hotel.

Great place, clean and cozy, walkable distance to any Old Town staples. Affordable secure parking couple of blocks away. Amazing rooftop patio to watch sunset or have a breakfast. P.S. You will see a lot of homeless population in the are, but it's a reality of any large city these days. It's still safe and walkable.

The staff and hotel itself was great! The hotel is secure with the front doors requiring a keypass for entry. The cafe had excellent coffee and the rooftop area was awesome to sit and have dinner and some drinks. Unfortunately, the Old Town/Chinatown area isn’t that great. It’s not a place that I felt safe to leave the hotel after dark and there was a lot of homelessness and open drug use around the hotel. That said, I saw numerous security guards and police patrolling at night, so if you’re looking for somewhere to base yourself, it’s very convenient to trains and buses, just maybe don’t go out at night.

The Society Hotel was clean, service was great, and our private room was well designed. The rooftop and cafe were nice additions so you could stay in and have what you need at night. The location was central, however, there were quite a few interesting characters located on the street immediately outside the hotel. Overall great experience.

This hotel was great. Stayed for one night prior to flying home from Portland and had a really good experience. Stayed in a suite and the room was lovely. We were able to utilize the rooftop area which was really nice on a perfect evening, and the lobby area is comfortable and stylish with a cafe that’s open until 10. As others have mentioned, the neighborhood is going through a rough time- there are many people experiencing homelessness and addiction in the area. That said, the hotel is very on top of guest safety and very reassuring, and oddly, in our experience- the area felt better the later in the evening it got, as the nightlife options opened up and there was more foot traffic. There is an option for paid parking 2 blocks away if you want to ensure the safety of your vehicle (we opted for this as we had a rental car).

This was a great stay! Comfortable bed, and a wonderful and attentive staff. We could even see the 4th of July fireworks from the rooftop lounge. Our room had no fridge or microwave, but the hotel staff helped accommodate our needs. Would recommend!
