Red Lion Hotel

A decent hotel if visiting the Anvil Theatre. Stayed Saturday night so a little street noise around midnight. Nice bar. Didn't eat as menu limited. Staff very pleasant. Kept running out of breakfast food between 09.30 and 10.00am. Having said that very good value for money and will stay again when visiting the Anvil.

Well located in the centre of town, with easy access to shops and eateries (although subject to some night-lie noise). Reception was efficient and friendly. Our double room on the first floor was no better than average; although clean, the overall feel of the corridors and room was rather tired, with scuffed paintwork, stained carpets and uneven laminate. The room size was fine, with a small TV, coffee making facilities and a decent sized bathroom. However, the bath panel was cracked, paintwork shabby, dripping tap, shower controls that didn't work, stained sink and bath-tub and an erratic toilet flush (towels were nice, though!) Breakfast was excellent, with a well stocked buffet of hot food, juices, fruit and pastries, with friendly service and the option to have freshly cooked poached or fried eggs (in addition to the scrambled eggs on the buffet). So, to summarise: Pro's: friendly staff, on-site parking, breakfast, location Cons : tired decor, sub-standard bathroom

The Red Lion Hotel has been my go-to hotel in Basingstoke for a few years. It's in a great location near the top of town and Festival Place. The room was pleasant and clean, there's adequate free parking, and breakfast was nice and reasonably priced. There are cheaper hotels, but you get what you pay for.

Great location for everything in the town. Free parking also a great bonus. Didn't use the bar or have breakfast but all the staff l meet very friendly and polite. Room(50)was a bit tired but very clean and great value for the price. Would definitely stay again👍

Hotel is in a good location for shopping centre and bars/restaurants and has a lot of parking spaces and very friendly staff, The bar and restaurant at the hotel was closed until about 8 as they had a function on so went into the town but this was only a short walk away you could use a bar adjourned to the hotel but was a little off putting when you walked in and got stared at (this was a gaming type bar), our room was located on the 3rd floor and was extremely hot they supplied a fan but this only helped a little bit had to have windows open and noise below was very loud until about 2am. There is a bar/club (Harry’s bar) directly underneath the hotel

Probably will not return, sorry

The Hotel is centrally located in Basingstoke and is ideally situated if You are attending a performance at The Haymarket Theatre as it is a mere 2 minute walk away. Complimentary parking is also provided for the duration of your stay which in My case was overnight.Getting in from the cold it was pleasing to find that the heating was on in the 3rd floor room which I had been allocated.

Waited quite a while to check in as there was no one on reception. Room quite small, apart from the dressing table chair, there was no where else to sit, apart from the bed. We were at the back of the hotel, despite double glazing still very noisy, fortunately we had ear plugs. Came back from the theatre at 22:00, despite the bar advertising being open until 22:30, we were told it was closing, shutters were already down. Tea, coffee and biscuits were plentiful. Bed small but reasonably comfortable.

Room had some cobwebs and blinds didn’t work properly

Our reservation had been put in the wrong name by hotel staff - initially we were told we had arrived at the wrong hotel. I produced a copy of our reservation and eventually we were allowed to check in. We were allocated room 61 - about as far from the check-in as you could go! The room was dusty and both sink taps & shower head ran water when switched off. We had to put the shower head down in the bath and keep the bathroom firmly closed to get any sleep. The breakfast was fantastic and the staff very pleasant and helpful but the management need a kick up the arse!

This 'hotel' is tired and in need of some renovation or at least a little TLC. The room wasn't dirty but felt dusty and there was a build up of dust behind furniture. The carpet looked like it was rescued from a Wetherspoons and I was reluctant to remove any footwear. Light bulbs in lamps were broken or missing. The room was on the cool side and on inspection the original sash window was open by a few centimetres and was covered with some secondary glazing. On attempting to close the window it seemed that it was stuck open and I was worried that using too much force would rip it from the frame. Hence the secondary glazing I suppose. It wasn't too bad for my stay but I would imagine it would be drafty and cold later in the year. The bathroom was OK but again the shower over the bath was quite old and not the best and there were some signs of discoloured grout and tiles. There were signs of peeling paint and dark, grubby marks on the walls and this along with the poor state of carpet and repair was also visible throughout the corridors. The staff that I met were great. Very friendly and helpful. I didn't make use of the restaurant and bar but from a quick glance they seemed reasonable. I would very much question how this establishment has achieved an 8.2/10 rating as for me, even without the issues I found in my room, I couldn't say it was more than 5/10. All in all a rather disappointing experience.

Friendly, welcoming and helpful staff. Didn't try the evening meal offerings as there is a good variety of restaurants nearby, but the breakfast was good. The room was clean and well equipped but a bit stuffy in the summer heat. Would stay there again next time I have work in the area.

Avoid this place like the plague ! Found someone’s toenail clippings in the bathroom - also excrement on the bathroom wall ! Shower didn’t drain as it was filthy with dirt and hair ! Hair all over the carpet ! Addressed with management and promised full refund - then reneged on it ! Keep away from place unless you can put up with filth!

I like to stay in the Red Lion when I visit the Anvil theatre. I have never been disappointed. Clean, comfortable and ideal for my needs.

Staff very friendly. Room clean and comfortable. Breakfast well cooked and tasty. Room was very warm though.

Mattress poor quality

We stayed in a Superior Double room (18). The mattress was terrible, old a saggy, resulting in a terrible nights sleep, definitely needs changing. Also bedside lamp had no bulb in it meaning us having to swap lamps around.

The room was very spacious and homely, it felt like a lounge only with a double bed. The bed was extremely comfortable and I also appreciated having a bathtub available. There was plenty of storage space for clothers and other items (lots of drawers there). The staff were friendly and welcoming with an easy check-in.

There was a noise coming from the pipes next door all night as well as the fact that the walls are incredibly thin so was kept awake most of tie night. Wouldn’t recommend if you want a good nights sleep

Last 4 stays, all different rooms. None of them with good mattresses. Didnt sleep well this time

We stayed the night when attending a show at the Anvil. The hotel was convenient for the town centre restaurants and the theatre. The hotel has free parking. Our room was spotless and clearly recently renovated. Other rooms had workmen replacing bathrooms, so the hotel Is being smartened up. The bed was comfortable, and the room warm. Reception staff were helpful. Overall, for the price we paid, it was excellent value for money and we will definately use again. We didnt stay for breakfast, so cant comment on food.

Generally the stay is good experience. I spent 6 days there. During my stay，there is heatwave warning ， the hotel prepared a fan in the room which is so considerate. The only thing is the sound insulation between rooms is not so good. there is a night （around 2am ) I heard clearly what is talking in next room😔

The hotel was perfect except the bed we could feel the springs in the mattress so didn’t sleep that well.

Great location, but the room was roasting when I stayed - noted that it was during a heatwave, there was a fan in the room but this was very low powered and there was a tiny opening to the window, but because of this it was very difficult to sleep. Unfortunately no air conditioning.

My stay was great as normal, been staying here for around 4- 5 weeks for work . Staff very friendly and helpful.

Great hotel in central Basingstoke, close to everything. There was a function the night we stayed, it was very noisy but the staff moved us to a lovely room away from the noise. Special thanks to Beth 🙏

The staff in particular were great. Welcoming, courteous, friendly but professional, caring and thoughtful. My room was pretty good but I guess a little tired. There was no noise from the pub or other areas around. I slept well.

Pleasant hotel and good central location for Baskingstoke. Friendly staff and everything we needed for our short stay in town for work. Happy to recommend and would stay again when the occasion arises. Great to have free parking too!

It's very near to station, just walking distance 5 -10 minutes, 24 hrs open service, easy to go by train to london Waterloo, Oxford university , southHampton , and so many places, cheap bus service to Heathrow terminal bus no 731

The Hotel was ideally situated for the town and easy to find and free to park which is a bonus. Check in was quick and pleasant. The room was ok , could have done well a deeper clean but was still ok, with the warmer weather there was a fan supplied which was a nice welcomed touch. Breakfast was managed with the idea of ‘ no waste’ which is good , but the cooked food could have been hotter ( I personally do not enjoy cold toast, that was like cardboard) On a positive note , the staff couldn’t do enough to help and one in particular, Anna was on her own over the weekend and was non stop but always cheery and helpful.

I stay here regularly and have never had a problem. The location is great, within walking distance of the town and shopping centre. The price is always reasonable. The staff are friendly. The breakfast is good. I can't comment on evening meals as I have never had one there due to the proximity of local restaurants and takeaways.
