Quirky city hotel in a great location. BUT BEWARE - There is a night club / bar on floor 27, we stayed on floor 19 and base thumped through our room so loudly it was impossible to sleep. The hotel declined to do anything about this so we were kept up until 2am till the nightclub closed. This happens every Fri/Sat so beware, they said the first night was a one off event and the bar would close at Midnight the next day, it did not and we were again kept up till 2am. This was not ideal on a day we were leaving early for the airport. In the end they refunded a day of our stay, however there was no apology and the attitude was just well the bar does what it does and the hotel guests should just live with it. Funnily enough the event at the bar was invitation only so hotel guests wouldnt be welcome to attend only to have their sleep disrupted. One lift was closed off for the nightclub guests with a thug of a bouncer questioning everyone! If your happy to be out and about every day till 2am hotel is fine, if not then stay elsewhere.

This hotel does a pretty good job with the New York-specific "tiny room" category. My room was a little austere for my taste, but it has been beautifully done, was spotlessly clean, had a fantastic shower. I must admit to being a little disappointed, though. When I was there, there were private events in both bars, so they were closed to hotel guests. My room didn\'t have any workspace (no table-level surfaces or chair) so having somewhere in the hotel where I could pit-stop with my laptop would have been nice. Also one of the three elevators was out of service giving rise to quite long waits and lots of stops in a pretty tall, thin building. These are niggles, really, and perhaps I am being a little harsh in part because, at this time of year, it was pretty expensive. It\'s a very nice hotel, fabulously located. Just not quite right for me.

Chic property with a great bar. Rooms are very small, no desk, chair or space to spread out except in bed. But clean and modern. To note - the restaurant, bar and rooftop don’t open until 5pm, so no food options or hang out area available during the day.

If you're looking for a quiet place to sleep don't expect to get much here. The rooftop patio has a DJ that goes until 2 am and can be heard on the upper floors as low down as the 15th floor. We asked to be moved from the 25th floor and could still hear the boom boom boom sound of the music on the 15th. Staff were very accommodating and gave us free breakfast for the rest of our stay though, which was just ok and should be included anyhow for the price you pay for this hotel. Even if you wanted to go to the rooftop it's next to impossible as it's reserved and has a huge cover charge. Other than that, it's clean and convenient.

The location was great. The staff very friendly. The jazz at the bar was fabulous. The decor was very cool. Our two complaints which made our review a 3 star: We were on the 24th floor. On the 27th floor is the roof top bar - basically a night club. The music was VERY loud until 2 in the morning which we could feel three floors down. Other guests commented they went up to check out the club and couldn't hear themselves think let alone talk. I am not sure why the music has to be that loud. I can't imagine what it was like for the floor just beneath the club if we could feel it three stories down! And second complaint: there is an automatic light in a cubby under the bed which is supposed to be motion sensitive. However, it kept going on all night even without motion. Eventually we stuffed the cubby with pillows so it wouldn't wake us up. If you book a room on one of the lower floors I would say it is a cool hotel with great staff. If you are anywhere near the top floors beware....And cover up that light!

I think they gave me an upgraded room. I booked 8 nights in a cozy queen that’s the smallest. However looking at the fire escape map I could see it was one of the larger rooms on the floor. Very kind of them.. I could really sleep well here and it was relatively quiet with so few rooms on each floor. Eight rooms on my floor four. The staff were nearly all friendly, I did encounter a bouncer for the roof top bar that was rude to me. Which brings me to the only major issue with the hotel is the elevators. There are three, two very small and one slightly larger you can be waiting a long time and often when one came it was already full. The Saturday night they had one of these, the largest, reserved for taking people to the roof top bar. It made it a long long wait to get back up to my room. Literally they had an employee at a roped off elevator that wasn’t being used making sure only outside rooftop guests would not have to wait. The guy muttered at me about having to wait, I hadn’t said anything rude to him about the e situation but maybe my face was telling a story. I would really recommend this hotel as a great place to stay, all the rest of the staff were lovely. By the way I tried the Buffett breakfast one day and it wasn’t anything special for the money.

Great stay at this very cute boutique hotel. The rooms are definitely “cozy” but exactly as pictured so no surprises. It’s located in a great area with no real outside noise coming through! The rooftop terrace was nice but definitely not my scene late night (think DJ and very young rowdy crowd), it was perfect around sunset! The second floor lounge was also fantastic with live jazz music that played well into the late night hours! Overall great stay.

There is no lobby which I was not aware. I prefer to have one. The elevators were slow. The roof top bar has a $100 minimum past a certain hour. As a person traveling alone, I could not get a drink at the hotel without spending a lot of money.

Super clean and well-appointed. Small rooms, but has everything you’d want or need. Price was reasonable for the area, and location was excellent—a few blocks away from the crowds and bustle of Times Square, so quiet enough to rest up before or after a day out in the city.

Our room looked classy and cool but the room could have been less dusty and the blackout screen moved by itself. We only got our room cleaned every third night. Staff were friendly and very helpful. The view from our room was amazing. The location is also so convenient because you are in Times Square and Sub access is just a 2 minute walk away.

Location is perfect. If you choose the smallest room, it is really small. There is no closet, no drawers. No space at all. But we managed. Bed was comfortable. Bathroom small but functional. Points go down as there is no room cleaning service and, if your towels get wet because the shower is open, well… no one will bring you any towels, no matter how many times you request them. The Hotel restaurant is great. For this reasons, we chose a different Hotel for our next visit.

No closet to hang clothes, just a few hangers on a peg, which could only be accessed when the sliding bathroom door was closed. When the sliding door was open, your clothes got crushed. No refrigerator either. The room was clean and the TV and WiFi worked fine. The location is also good. The staff were friendly enough. But considering how expensive it was (like every hotel in NYC), I can’t say that I got good value.

Clean room, but much smaller than expected was supposed to be 23 sqm but I paced it out at under 20! There was no desk so had to sit on the bed to do my emails. No clock of any sorts but also no coffee maker - essential when travelling in a different time zone. 2 very small windows. For the money I think it falls short if what should be expected.

Hotel staff were great, very clean. My room was on the 9th floor. No issues with noise most of the time but is close to a fire department so occasional sirens. Booked a ‘spacious’ room which was much smaller than expected so if sharing and like space would suggest upgrading. Good location so overall great trip.

This may be one of my favorite hotels I’ve ever stayed in and I have traveled a lot! If you are looking for roominess this is not your hotel. However, the room itself was stunning from the velvet head and sideboards to the remote controlled black out shades to the stunning tile and brass features in the bathroom - the whole atmosphere is top notch. The rooftop bar has an incredible view and great vibe. The location is fantastic being right around the corner from Times Square and many Broadway shows. This place is truly a hidden gem.

The front desk staff was exceptional, providing a warm and welcoming experience. The hotel's decor and ambiance were chic and inviting, and the location was ideal. My "cozy" room was pleasantly spacious! The only reason I'm not giving a full five stars is due to an issue with the bathroom design; when showering, the bathroom would flood. There was even a sign and a squeegee provided to help manage the water, but it left my bathroom wet all night, which was a bit inconvenient. Overall, I truly enjoyed my stay! Thank you, Civilian!

Terrible customer service, forgot two large important textbooks in the room needed for the following day, called 4 hours later and it took 3-4 calls and a lot of back and forth until finally got a hold of the manager on duty who told me nothing can be found in the room and that no one can check right away until the current guest checks out. I guess asking them to make a quick call and ask the guest to take a look at the shelf was too much to ask. In addition, this is a party hotel. We were on the 23rd floor and the music from the bar on the 27th floor was heard until 2 am. I couldn’t sleep until it was over. This hotel left a bad impression for us. Wouldn’t return.

We LOVE staying here! Anytime we come to NYC we stay here bc the price is amazing, it’s close to everything (theaters, Central Park, etc) and we love the kind staff. The jazz nights were fun to experience too as well as Starchild on the rooftop. Danny at the front was amazing and remembered me from last time!

I stayed at Civilian with my Dad this past weekend, and we had a great experience. We flew into JFK, and it was an easy airtrain and subway ride to 50th street to get to the hotel. Upon our arrival, We were greeted by Jesus, who gave us some great restaurant recommendations. He also upgraded our room to a spacious double. The room was well appointed and clean. We were on the 22nd floor and had a great view of the Hudson I also really appreciated the hydration stations; it made it very easy to stay hydrated We traveled to see a play, and Civilian was only 3 minutes away on foot. We also walked to Central Park and the Met. Everything we wanted to see was within walking distance. Overall, we had a great time, and I would definitely stay at Civilian again.

Aside from the fact that the rooms are a little small, as is to be expected in Manhattan, the Civilian hotel was otherwise absolutely perfect. The staff went above and beyond to accommodate a very early check-in, and then an unexpected late check out when my flight home got delayed. The staff (Colin, David, Nick, & Daniel stand out) and they were very friendly and made sure throughout the stay that I was happy. The rooms are very modern and clean, and the area surrounding the hotel is very walkable and safe. The location of the hotel is excellent to get around Manhattan, and of course, it’s situated close to all of the amazing restaurants in Hell’s Kitchen. All in all, I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone considering a stay in New York City. I have very high standards and they not only met, but exceeded them.

Each & every employee was friendly & knowledgeable. They were more than willing to help in any capacity & I felt that they genuinely enjoyed working there & were invested in their guests. We had an enjoyable stay at the Civilian. The staff team are friendly and helpful. The decor is beautiful. The hotel itself is in a great location. Walk two blocks to 46 st and you’ll find a street full of restaurants. We enjoyed Dim sum palace and Jasmines Caribbean cuisine. But there are streets and streets of places to discover all within walking distance. We had a cosy queen room on the 24th floor, we couldn’t hear the music etc from the roof top bar, the hotel itself was quit quiet. The cosy queen is cosy (small) and there is very very limited storage space, we lived out of the suitcases, which was a little frustrating, but not really a problem. We had two minor hiccups and the staff team rectified straight away. They use WhatsApp to connect with guests, which is great as you usually get a quick response. The roof top bar (starchild) is fun, I enjoyed sitting in the covered area watching the sunset. I would stay at the Civilian again, but I would opt for a bigger room if sharing with another person and be prepared to pay for a daily clean of the room. They did offer a complimentary clean mid way through stay ( day 3) But this was just changing the sheets and providing clean towels. I would give this hotel 7/10.

I’ve been to NYC many times before and loved this location. It’s in Hell’s Kitchen and had a GREAT rooftop terrace! A block away from the m&m store in Times Square. The room was very clean and modern and the staff was very friendly and welcoming. We are at their restaurant on the main floor and it was delicious! We will return !

Location is awesome. Right next to the heart of Times Square - but on a quiet street. The staff was friendly and the hotel in excellent condition. Only two negatives - I did not realize there was a room service up charge; however new towels free. Also coffee service during the weekdays. I would happily stay again.

A fantastic hotel. Unbelievably convenient for theatres, Radio City, etc. Comfortable bed, excellent shower, brilliant and friendly staff. Very close to amazing coffee - St Kilda in particular. Very close to amazing food - Chalong in particular. And very reasonably priced for such a great place. Strongly recommended.

We loved this hotel! The hotel staff were wonderful, the rooms had really nice touches and beautiful decor. The area was extremely walkable and convenient. Our only misshap was the restaurant experiences. We had mediocre service at their main restaurant and horrible service at the rooftop bar. We found amazing restaurants around the area and would definitely return to the Civillian and just avoid the in hotel restaurants for the next time. Overall a wonderful stay.

The hotel is easy walking distance to Times Square and loads of restaurants and shops on your door step. We tried the restaurant downstairs and the food was very tasty. Also a lovely view from their roof top bar if you fancy a cocktail. The offer complimentary tea and coffee in the mornings. I would highly recommended this hotel and i would happily come back next time I'm in New York
