Overall it was a great stay. The only negatives were that our room was a little cold from the A/C, and other guests were a little loud into the night - but that’s expected. We used the parking pass and that made it very convenient. The decor is really unique and it’s a short walk to Petco. We would stay there again.

Located in the heard of Gaslamp district this is a bit of an oasis. Very clean and organized shared bathrooms and kitchen facilities, compositionally shared lounges, fun social activities. Beds were small but comfortable. Guests and street noise were pretty manageable plus hostel offered ear plugs. I enjoyed my stay with my sister very much.

I stayed in 3 rooms that were similar. Comfortable beds with privacy at the head and an outlet with a little light. Washrooms were fine, more or less clean but only 6 showers and 6 toilets for 23 rooms (although admitedly I never had trouble finding free stalls); there are 2 hair dryers. The lockers are are huge (15" wide, 16.5" deep, 34.5" tall), take a school lock and have an electrical outlet. Towels and sheets are provided. There is a common fridge (no freezer) but it was PACKED. The staff were super nice and very helpful; seems like they are students also staying at the hostel. Was disappointed that the ghost tour on Thursday was canceled, but I got the story from one of the receptionists. Didn't see any ghosts tho. :) Area is very lively at night, with a night club across the street and bars everywhere; the noise can travel to the rooms but it wasn't too bad (there's free ear plugs by reception). Despite the location, everyone I roomed with seemed to sleep quite early (before 11pm) so I had to do a lot of tip toeing. The common room is a bit cramped but the breakfast room provided a nice quiet place to do some packing. Wifi is free, but spotty in the back rooms. The city has a lot of homeless people, but I still felt safe in the area and hostel. I have 2 wishes. A, that we could book a top or bottom bunk ahead of time and B, that there were curtains around the beds to provide even more privacy. But overall, I had a good stay and a first time hostel experience.

Staff was very friendly. Rooms all have locks on them and have charging lockers inside to keep belongings safe. They have social events every day in case you’re looking for something to break the ice. Def would stay again.

Well this was the 2nd time I've used this hostal and will say the staff is super helpful, made some improvements and did enjoy the activities that they have. Kitchen and dinning area was still nice. Plus always getting some cool or awesome bunk mates. If you need a good place to crash for the night I'd recommend this place. Even if it's for your 1st time.

Stayed here many times. Location is great and they have a few nights where they have activities. Wifi reception has been spotty in the past but was good this time around. One drawback this time from past visits is that their water filtration machhine was out of order. I had 2 separate stays over a 2 week span and they never fixed this. Also lots of painting going on during part of my stay. I saw a few guests with paint on their shirts!

Breakfast was simple but enough for me. The only disappointment was that they ran out of brewed coffee on 2nd and 3rd morning. No extra coffee was provided and there was no instant coffee. Shower booth was good since there were some places / hooks to keep belongings during shower. Water temparature of shower would be great if it was hotter.

Laundry+iron, vending machines, can stay on premises even after checking out. Looking forward to returning!

This was a great option for a downtown stay and will be the first spot I look for when I’m back in town.

Too dirty it was so bad experience

Very unique and vibrant place. No sound at night. Cleanliness was okay but could be better.

The best hostel to stay!! From check-in/out, the staff and other guest were amazing. The rooms were completely clean and bathrooms spotless!! Definitely will stay there over a crazy priceless hotel. 💯🎈

Bathroom smell was very awful, there are only 3 shower room, 3 bathrooms so all people share with it

This place is wonderful! The staff is super friendly and helpful. They treat you like a long time friend. Not once did I see something dirty or messy. As a single lady, I felt completely safe and in good company. If I come back to San Diego, this is where I’m staying!

I booked a private room, and thought I would be getting a single bed with a window. Instead I got a windowless bunk bed. The walls were painted dark blue and it was very depressing. The room was also hot and stuffy. The air conditioning is connected to several rooms, so if it was cooler in my room, it would affect other rooms. There are a lot of vagrants in the downtown area. And I mean A LOT. I didn't like walking around there in the daytime, let alone the night. The hostel decor itself was very colorful and cheerful, and the staff very good.

This was a great place to stay. The staff were nice and helpful. The beds creek a lot, but totally understand they are older so not too big of a deal. I would definitely book here again!!

The Gaslamp hostel is an excellent place to stay in heart of downtown San Diego for budget travelers. It's close to the airport and several major tourist attractions and also has amazing dining options around. The staff are super friendly and helpful, the amenities are well maintained and clean. The only downside is that since it is located in a bustling area, over the weekends, it was extremely noisy in the area around and hence quite difficult to sleep with with all the party sounds pouring in. For a light sleeper like me, that was a real challenge but perhaps for a heavy sleeper, it would be fine. And the room walls are paper thin, so there was also a lot of noise coming from the other rooms. But overall, I cannot complain much. I would stay there again, despite the noise issue.

Very clean and efficient. The free breakfast and milk in the morning is very good. Room was very comfortable. Each bed has a shelf, light, an outlet and USB outlets. Even the lockers had outlets in them - I have never seen that anywhere! Very impressed! Overall, the place has a very clean feel, especially the bathrooms and showers. Some nights, the rooms facing the street can be a bit noisy because of the club across the street, but they provide free earplugs. Very good vibe, and travelers (and employees!) at this location are very friendly. I would definitely come back again!

Let's face it, bunk beds are not the most conducive to a good night's sleep. And you can't expect a "hotel room" experience in a hostel. But everyone on the staff was very cool, and while I would probably opt for the expense of a hotel room in the future I did enjoy the experience.

I liked the location of the hostel and the friendly staff. I wish the community room was in a more central location. It would also be nice if there were at least full size bed options in some rooms.

Generally nice, clean and right in the middle of the Gaslamp District. Thus it can feel noisy at night if you are a light sleeper. Unfortunately the Wifi is intermittent when I was in the room. It only works well when I was near the front desk or the lounge area.

This place way amazing. Beautiful and old yet right in the heart of it all. I felt safe here and would 100% come back. I felt more at home than in a borning modern hotel. The pillows were super uncomfortable is my only thing but the rest of the place obviously made up for that!

The Gaslamp Hostel is a great place to stay in Gaslamp. Amazing location, service and staff! Kate, Shannon, Pedro, Madison, Meg, Erika, Isadora, just to name a few, are legends and will make your day and your stay. Totally recommend staying here!

If I may start by saying this, everyone at the property is very professional and polite with all the guests. The rooms are good and it’s right in the heart of the Gaslamp Quarter for all your fun and enjoyment. Definitely worth noting that they have events on the property and they’re a lot of fun and very interactive. Overall, my week at Gaslamp was great with a lot of great people and memories.

The pipe above my bed had dripping water from condensation. Staff were rude.

Staff was super friendly and accommodating. Super location if you are attending a conference. You can drop off luggage if you arrive early and enjoy the town without lugging your luggage around until checkin time. If you want to visit the city after checkout time you can leave your luggage at the hostel until early evening when you are asked to retrieve it.

This was my first time staying at a hostel. I was kind of nervous, but they made me feel welcome. They allow you to hang in the lounge until your bed is ready and store your bags. They also was nice and showed me a book with stories of the history of the building. All staff was top notch.

There was no toilet paper in the bathroom, so I had to open the stall door and yell for help. It was pretty embarrassing. Then when they brought some, there was no apology, just excuses. The staff was unfriendly and not helpful,

Congested and staffs are not cooperative at all

My first ever hostel stay and it was amazing! The staff were lovely and had lots of recommendations for things to do. They'd often check in at the end of the day asking how my day was and what I'd been up to. Would definitely go bsck

One of my Favorite Hostels it’s in a great location and is a fun stay downtown for relaxing and fun. Nice Staff and clean rooms!

Absolutely wonderful place to stay! The staff are extremely friendly and understanding. The hostel itself looks absolutely beautiful and they keep it immaculately clean! It is in a prime position and everything in the gaslamp district is in walking distance. There are always people and police around the area which makes it feel very safe. Only thing to note is that the gaslamp area the hostel is in is a heavy party/club area, making it noisy at particularly at night. They did provide earplugs if this is a problem for you, I brought along a wireless headphone beanie to sleep in since I am a light sleeper, and I was able to sleep soundly each night! It is truly a wonderful stay and I highly recommend it to anyone visiting the area.

The most bang for your buck, and by far the best area to stay in, gaslamp quarter had excellent dining options, walk-ability, access to public transport and the ocean, etc. Inside the hostel we felt super safe, everything's clean, orderly, and has a wonderful charm that adds to the experience, even if you just need a quick bed and shower.

Great location, great value

We enjoyed our stay at Gaslamp Hostel! The staff was SO friendly and offered up great recommendations for places to check out around the city. The hostel is in easy walking distance to a bunch of public transit if you wanna save a few bucks on Uber and take the buses and train around town. We are already planning our next visit back to San Diego and are keeping Gaslamp Hostel at the top of our list as places to stay!

Awesome and amazing experience. I will definitely recommend staying here! Hostel staff was warm and welcoming upon arrival. I was by myself without my family and nervous and the staff help me so much when I needed it! I am so grateful first day in there. I had an amazing experience. I was blessed talking with the most amazing people from everywhere experiencing beautiful sites I have never seen before. The beaches bars and restaurants are walkable distance. They have social events and a nice clean kitchen! I would definitely recommend staying here with friends for a couple days experiencing life and come back to a safe and warm environment. I super enjoyed my stay here! Everything about Gaslamp hostel is great. There could be healthier breakfast food options available (i.e. choices with no sugar added). I appreciated the beverages provided throughout the day. Loved the location, hostel activities, and international staff and visitors. Overall, this is a well run facility. I was concerned about the exit step down not being marked. I appreciated being able to wait in the lounge for check in. Since I had not slept the night before arriving, it would have been nice to have a quick verbal orientation. It would be a good idea to post “quiet hours” since there is such a mix of travelers, including working people, and people from differing time zones…I will definitely stay here again! Great value!

This is a very convenient area to stay. You're within walking distance to many well known tourist places. A grocery close by as well as some of the best restaurants in the downtown area.The staff is very friendly and helpful.

Location, location, location - fantastic! However, having 5th St. blocked off at both ends afternoon/evening reduces its accessibility. The "free Continental breakfast" is appreciated, but does not rise to a normal Continental breakfast of fresh fruit, pastries, toast and jam, yogurt, etc. Keep trying, though! Finally, make sure there's enough toilet paper in the bathrooms to last until the next morning. Yes, I'd stay here again; it's a lively, funky, charismatic place to stay.
