Staff was great, friendly. Room clean. Great place to stay with one exception, our room - 106, was up 3 flights of narrow stairs. lugging a 50lbs bag was no easy chore. They did offer to help, but a person with walking difficulties would find it almost impossible to get to room.

A lovely hotel right in the town easy walk into the centre for the museum, cathedral and Christmas market. Food was nice but a bit expensive. Car parking was a nightmare. We arrived at the car park for the hotel and it was full. We waited an hour and I went to reception to say we can’t get parked and I was told that if we had waited over 20 minutes we were going to get a parking ticket. We were then told there was an overflow car park which we were lucky to get parked in as I needed a disabled bay. Luckily we didn’t use the car whilst staying at the hotel so we didn’t have the same parking issue. Once we got to our room there was a qr code to scan for extra information. There was a map where the overflow car park was. I asked reception why wasn’t the car park info e mailed to you before arrival and was told it does if you booked direct. Surely all guests should receive this info before arriving. Four other cars had the same problem and waited for a long time to get parked.

Great hotel literally yards from the high street but set on a really quiet road. Staff were all super helpful and it has a great bar and garden where you can sit and chill after a busy day sightseeing. Theres two carparks at this hotel which although you have to pay for, are superb and super convenient. Beds are big & comfy and i wouldn't hesitate in using this hotel again.

Great location for central Winchester. The parking situation is awful, we stayed 6 nights, and were in and out whilst staying and spent what seemed like ages driving around the one way system going from one car park to another trying to find space (each time you tried either the top or bottom car park it was another loop around the whole of the city centre!) It would be helpful if residents could secure a given space for the duration of the stay. The hotel is comfortable (note there is no lift in the old building, so the top floor was up multiple stairs). The staff were not the friendliest (staying over Christmas and not a single Happy Christmas!) We would stay again, so nothing stated here outweighs the convenience of the location.

Disappointing. Room was grubby and the extractor fan in the bathroom wasn’t working resulting in mould on the ceiling. A very poorly maintained room. Most disappointing was the fact that the hotel hasn’t replied to my comments I left on a response card in reception. I also wasn’t asked about my stay when I checked out.

The hotel is a well located, lovely old building and my room had a beautiful view over the garden. The room was a good size with average furnishings in need of an update and requiring a bit more cleaning. The staff were all so helpful, especially those on reception. A very pleasant stay overall. I would stay there again.

A really enjoyable two night stay in this excellent hotel. The room was clean, and the bed comfortable. The breakfasts were among the best I have experienced ... plenty of choice and very tasty (real honey!). The evening meal was also very good. Staff were helpful and friendly and the car parking was no problem. I highly recommend this hotel and will gladly stay there again. We even met Bob Mortimer, Paul Whitehouse and their dog Ted!

Weather was good on our first day and we got use of the garden area for drinks and snacks. The room was very comfortable and clean and the service was great. We had booked the Wednesday night and then decided to book additionally night on the Tuesday so we could see around Winchester and we are glad we did. The hotel reception managed to leave us in the same garden vie room rather than moving to the Feature double room. Although this room was bigger and more facilities within the room we were happy to stay within the room we were in. So the staff were very accommodating and very helpful. Would recommend this hotel for its staff and its location. John McLelland

Great breakfast & friendly staff. First room had a broken loo. Replaced room was very tired and needed a good clean. Flaking paint on the walls, spilt drink splatter, cobwebs and dirt in the bathroom.

1. Had to shower in my own filth as shower would not drain 2. Flushing the toilet was a hit and miss as it would probably work once in 5 attempts 3. Carpets throughout the hotel either need replacing or a thorough clean. 4. The interior looks dated

It was a very peaceful place, spotlessly clean, nice bed and bedlinen easy walk from the train station and town centre and cathedral. The garden was so peaceful. Lots of plugs, nice lights pleasant decor and toiletries. I booked an upgraded executive room for the following elements that weren’t all provided: black out blinds (they were there but didn’t cover the window so bright) garden view (I got it but only after stressful negotiations with reception) deep soak tub (it was a regular bath) robe and slippers(weren’t provided) the bed was good but the pillows were like bricks. They don’t have aircon either. The first room they put me in at the back of the hotel had a horrible view and I think possibly water heater pipes under the floor. If you stay you need to ensure you upgrade to a garden view and I wouldn’t recommend for hot summer nights as the fan doesn’t really cut it. Probably better for autumn or spring.

The Winchester Royal Hotel was great for one night's stay. My garden view room felt like a suite after my stay in one of London's modern hotels with a tiny narrow room. The room had almost everything one would want--except for air conditioning. It was a tad warm and stuffy. They did have a fan to provide circulation. Since my room was on the ground floor, I did not feel comfortable leaving the windows open even with the safety chain that should keep someone from being able to climb through. It was cooler outside than inside. Lack of air conditioning in some of the rooms would not be a problem during cooler periods. I enjoyed having the tea kettle and the towel warmer. There were also an iron and ironing board and a hair dryer that I did not use. The TV worked well. The chair was comfortable. The bed was comfortable as well. The towels are thick and fluffy. The step up into the tub/shower is high. Someone with mobility issues might find it difficult to maneuver getting into and out of the tub. The glass between the shower and toilet only goes halfway down the length of the tub. Water gets on the floor.

We stayed one night in the feature room and it was good - power showers, comfy bed and quiet. The room was cozy and nice. Shame there is no AC which could be very problematic during the heat. Check in process was smooth and quick and staff was friendly and efficient. The hotel has great location and a lovely garden. It is patchy at parts to call it luxury but the overall impression is positive.

Initially disappointed that we were given a room in the old part of the building but turned out to be great. Large spacious room with a view over the lovely walled garden. Hotel very centrally located close to all the bars and restaurants, and the High Street. Car park not huge but managed to get the last space. Busy I think because it was a Saturday. Seemed to be plenty of spaces on the Sunday and Monday. Only downside to our stay was a slow check-in. The receptionist was very busy attending to other guests issues, and then the lady in front of me took a long time. When it was my turn check in was very quick. Would definitely stay at the hotel again.

We weren’t advised about the outdoor film showing in the garden outside our room until 11:45pm. This prevented us from sleeping. Also there are 2 car parks which I wasn’t told about. We couldn’t park one night and had to find another car park. Staff were apologetic and offered a partial refund which we accepted. Could have been avoided if we were put in a suitable room.

Really nice, spacious rooms. We stayed with our 2 small children and there was enough room for all of us. The location is perfect - very central but on a quiet street. The best feature of the hotel is the garden seating. Eating outside there is very special indeed. My only complaint is the charge of 15 pound for parking! I've never stayed at a hotel before and been charged for parking. And when I was shocked at the cost the receptionist rolled her eyes at me, as though I was the one being unreasonable for even questioning it (I was merely surprised and was very polite, so there was no need for her reaction). In general though the staff were very nice and acommodating.

This hotel is perfectly situated for all the attractions around Winchester as well as the shops and restaurants. The hotel restaurant was lovely and we were looked after. My only criticism is in the days leading up to arrival it was difficult to get anyone to answer the phone [I wanted to check on a restaurant booking] other than that, well recommended.
This hotel is perfectly situated for all the attractions around Winchester as well as the shops and restaurants. The hotel restaurant was lovely and we were looked after. My only criticism is in the days leading up to arrival it was difficult to get anyone to answer the phone [I wanted to check on a restaurant booking] other than that, well recommended.

Weather was good on our first day and we got use of the garden area for drinks and snacks. The room was very comfortable and clean and the service was great. We had booked the Wednesday night and then decided to book additionally night on the Tuesday so we could see around Winchester and we are glad we did. The hotel reception managed to leave us in the same garden vie room rather than moving to the Feature double room. Although this room was bigger and more facilities within the room we were happy to stay within the room we were in. So the staff were very accommodating and very helpful. Would recommend this hotel for its staff and its location. John McLelland

Some positives - great location, clean room, quiet, early check in. Negatives- our room was given yo someone else, they came in as we were watching TB with our toddler, giving out the correct rooms is pretty much basic for a hotel, the other guest was appalled. Another let down was the service in the bar, it was very slow and they are clearly lacking enough staff.

Great hotel literally yards from the high street but set on a really quiet road. Staff were all super helpful and it has a great bar and garden where you can sit and chill after a busy day sightseeing. Theres two carparks at this hotel which although you have to pay for, are superb and super convenient. Beds are big & comfy and i wouldn't hesitate in using this hotel again.

Classic hotel with lovely indoor and outdoor spaces, we had a beautiful spacious Feature room. Professional and friendly team with great service - right in the centre of the city couldn’t be a better location and has parking for visitors with cars.

A lovely hotel right in the town easy walk into the centre for the museum, cathedral and Christmas market. Food was nice but a bit expensive. Car parking was a nightmare. We arrived at the car park for the hotel and it was full. We waited an hour and I went to reception to say we can’t get parked and I was told that if we had waited over 20 minutes we were going to get a parking ticket. We were then told there was an overflow car park which we were lucky to get parked in as I needed a disabled bay. Luckily we didn’t use the car whilst staying at the hotel so we didn’t have the same parking issue. Once we got to our room there was a qr code to scan for extra information. There was a map where the overflow car park was. I asked reception why wasn’t the car park info e mailed to you before arrival and was told it does if you booked direct. Surely all guests should receive this info before arriving. Four other cars had the same problem and waited for a long time to get parked.

A really enjoyable two night stay in this excellent hotel. The room was clean, and the bed comfortable. The breakfasts were among the best I have experienced ... plenty of choice and very tasty (real honey!). The evening meal was also very good. Staff were helpful and friendly and the car parking was no problem. I highly recommend this hotel and will gladly stay there again. We even met Bob Mortimer, Paul Whitehouse and their dog Ted!

The room was good but the breakfast was a bit chaotic.We had to wait a long time for bacon and tomatoes to arrive and by that time the eggs had gone cold. Think this was due to the graduations and a wedding making it extremely busy.

We stayed for one night (Saturday) while meeting up with friends in Winchester. We only needed a room and breakfast so did not experience much else of the hotel. Firstly, the location is fantastic as it is only a 30 second walk to the high street, but also on a quiet road. Parking was pretty easy, although it was busy and we got the last available space. We checked ahead to make sure we could drop our bags off early before checking in. After being told that would be fine it was a bit frustrating to be told on the day that there was no room and we would need to leave our bags in our car until it was time to check in. But in the scheme of things, this is a minor gripe. Check in was nice and easy and the room was pretty good - it was a nice size, good view over the garden, comfortable and clean. The breakfast was buffet style and suffered the expected problem; food was dry and eggs barely edible unless timed for when they came out fresh. There was one coffee machine which meant there was a queue to get a drink. But it was reasonably priced, ok quality and set us up for the day. Overall, the hotel is perfect for a weekend in Winchester city centre. We will definitely come back again.

This property was clearly once a lovely hotel but it seems a little tired in need of a refurb. The room was quite hot so we were grateful for the fan. No fridge in the room to keep water cold. Also closing the very full bar at 11 on a Saturday night seemed a bit early too. Paying £15 a night for parking in the hotel car park was also a bit off considering the rooms weren't that cheap. The gardens are lovely though.
