The property was a 20 min walk from most places. The train stations were both 20 min away. The bar was great for a late night service. It was clean and the morning complimentary coffee was very nice. I would definitely stay here again

i thought the shared spaces in this hotel were really cute & unique. When we arrived there was a DJ in the lobby that was so loud, we could not even hear the person checking us in. The rooms, albeit small, were well appointment, however our view was of an office building. I had called ahead to ask that slippers be in the room and when arrived, at almost midnight (due to late flight), they were not there so we had to wait to have them delivered, which was already very late. In addition, we would have liked to have eaten at the hotel restaurants, but the menu for breakfast was very limited & quite expensive. I did not want a HUGE breakfast, just eggs & toast & that was not on the menu. The most frustrating for us was the "resort fee" they tacked on when we left. 1) this is NOT a resort, this was a hotel in the middle of the city. 2) if they want more money for the reservation, they should just change the price, I would have appreciated the TRUE price from the beginning. 3)lastly, the "resort fee" included the microscopic home gym that not only had broken equipment, but had a FIVE person max capacity. We were a party of 3, which meant if other people were in there,we could not use it at the same time, which meant we had to stagger our workouts, which meant we had to wait until we were ALL done to go & enjoy Boston. when we checked in we would have appreciated being told about the "resort fee" including lobby activities, we were with a minor so not eligible to partake

It was great fun with the DJ on the nights we were there. Good food and nice room. There was an odor that permeated the hotel hall ways and public areas. Septic back up maybe? Also beware the valet parking is $69 a night!!

This venue has come down a bit in quality between my visits. If you purchase an extra amenity like breakfast or valet parking make sure to mention it because the staff won't. The room was average at best outside of the huge bathroom. The hotel was gorgeous and unique however valet is required at a hefty additional fee. It's just not as special as it should be.

did not like escalator was blocked off, seemed crazy not to leave it open to walk up. it was unsightly and pointless,slowed the elevators up by increasing usage. my other complaint was no drawer at front desk to break bills, I had to use ATM to get tip cash(cost me 5 bucks) both small things, but a very easy fix with little effort

The hotel is beautiful and the staff was courteous. However, the hotel hosted a massive party in the lobby with loud music, taking over the bars and restaurant. We were not happy about stepping over broken glass and drunk college students wandering the halls and taking over the place. I was told this happens every Saturday so I say stay elsewhere, the liberty cares more about the money from hosting college parties than their guests.

Enjoyed our stay at The Liberty Hotel for our 40th anniversary. Was a little nervous as I read a few negative reviews. We found the hotel to be clean & extremely nice. Location is close to the train station and several restaurants are close enough to walk to. Would stay there again.

Overall the place is good. Walkable distance to prominent spots and transportation. Impressive architecture and surroundings. Unique history about how jail turned into a hotel. However, there are minor things that discount the experience a lot. Cleaning lady left the trash bags in my suitcase. Staff didn’t return my laundry on time and I had to make several phone calls to get my clothes back. Water drains slowly in the bath tub. Hair found on unused bath towel. Very loud party lasts through midnight, which means no way to sleep even with earplugs on.

We had three rooms for our family – our first room smelled like cigarettes and the bathroom had cigarette ashes on the floor. We changed our room to 713. My 13-year-old son was in 722 but the key would not work. We tried 4 times making new keys and each time the door would not unlock. Each time I would get new keys, come down to the front desk and return with a set of keys that did not work. Finally a housekeeper walked by and offered to open the door. Our new room in 713 had plumbing issues with the toilet water coming up without even flushing it. I asked the front desk to fix this while we were out shopping. When we returned in the afternoon around 3pm – our room was cleaned but the toilet was overflowing with brown water from the plumbing. Andrew was on duty and apologized profusely and offered to move us to 806. That room was better, and the plumbing worked. Believe it or not – the heating did not work which we found out when we went to bed – unless you maxed it out to 80 degrees and it would come on for 5 minutes. We called the front desk and they sent up two thin blankets.

I was there for 1 night. Inside of hotel as you walk in is pretty impressive. It’s cool how they renovated the old jail. The incidentals card hold was ridiculous. That’s not publicized anywhere on their website, by the way. I thought that was shady, and I did complain. Think that’s a national issue that needs resolving. Room was pretty cool but I wasn’t impressed with dry bar options/drink selection. There were minimal choices. Pretty subpar. I was also not impressed that there were no outlets on the side of the bed to charge your phone. I had to use a different outlet away from the bed. I woke up after a nap at 11:30 pm. There is no late night in-room dining options during the week. Glad they took that incidental hold.

We were on the 3rd floor and our room was crazy noisy. The garbage dumpsters were right outside our window and the trash take out started at 2 am and went all morning. And the dance music from the lobby played till 1am every night. This is the loudest hotel we have ever stayed in and I would not come back. It’s pretty much a dance club with show girls walking around taking pictures all night.

Let me begin by saying that the staff are wonderful here, everyone was kind and friendly. Concierge was wonderful in making reservations for dinner as well as other requests for our room. The maids are very friendly, and the front desk staff are great. I booked a suite with views for the July 4th holiday. The Liberty Hotel is advertised as a “Luxury” hotel. This property is beautiful and it has potential, however, the rooms need more upkeep. The suite that we had was a bit run down. Specifically the entry door was damaged, the couch was very worn, and in general the suite was showing signs of heavy use and age. The view was one of the best we have ever had in a hotel. To continue calling the hotel “luxury,” repair and replace items to keep it up to standard. I should not be able to see the hallway from the other side of the entry door. The bolt lock should not look like it’s been pulled from the door. The living room couch should not look like it’s been attacked by feral cats. These are details that matter, especially when paying so much money for your stay.

We stayed in the Liberty when it opened 15 years ago. So, I have to admit I was disappointed when I returned and realised how badly it had aged. It was wonderful when it opened. It's important to realise that while this well located for Beacon Hill, and part of the hotel is a former jail, most of the hotel rooms are in a "modern" tower. One side looks over the Charles River (fabulous) and the other side faces the concrete wall of the Mass General tower next door (depressing). This is really not clear when you are booking rooms. The hotel is very expensive ($450+), so we were shocked when we discovered that we would be spending six nights in a fairly small room looking at a monstrously ugly hospital. After 2-nights, we were able to change room. Nevertheless, despite the view, the rooms and bathrooms are very tight and feel dated. While the staff were generally very nice, the breakfast is extremely expensive and in my view mediocre. The hotel is simply over-priced. On the return leg of our trip after visiting DC and NYC, we stayed at the recently opened Omni in the Seaport and had a vastly better hotel experience in terms of price, food quality and a huge beautiful modern room and bathroom. I would highly recommend staying there in the Seaport and taking an Uber to Beacon Hill.

Checked in at 416pm. Desk was organized but room was not ready. Management would not ask housekeeping to leave the room so we simply change for dinner. My wife checked out and the desk charged me for my stay (again). I had prepaid before arrival confirmed at check in. Still waiting for a fix on this second issue.

I had pre-paid for my stay over the weekend of Oct. 28th and 29th. I paid through Expedia, yet the hotel charged me as well. It has been a week and I am still waiting on my refund. No one seems to know what is happening and I have yet to receive a phone call back. There was too much confusion with the wrist bands for the party. It was just to much confusion and the staff did not even know about certain events, ie: Barbie Brunch.

If you're dreaming of a true luxury experience, keep dreaming — and maybe book somewhere else. The Liberty offers a beautiful lobby that gives you about five minutes of excitement before reality kicks in. Beyond that, it’s basically a standard business hotel wearing a very fancy price tag. The rooms? Generic. The service? Hope you enjoy waiting — and guessing whether anyone will actually come back to help you. Breakfast? Let’s just say you’ll appreciate how character-building a bad Bloody Mary can be first thing in the morning. And if you were hoping for a deep, authentic Boston vibe... you’ll have better luck at the airport bar. Spending around 150 nights a year in hotels, I don’t expect miracles — but I do expect to feel like I got what I paid for. Here, I left feeling like I accidentally bought a designer label... only to find out it was a knockoff. The building itself is stunning and the location is great — it’s everything else that needs serious work. A grand lobby is nice, but a real luxury experience is about service, care, and attention to detail. Unfortunately, The Liberty misses the mark by a wide margin. Bottom line: You deserve better. Your wallet deserves better. Your patience definitely deserves better.

Rude staff at checkin. No water, no help with luggage. Given the worst room, 13floor overlooking back of Mgh listening to fans and equipment all night. Marriott Gold member and cc holder. Travel the world with Marriott stays. I very politely talked to staff at front desk, was told they would give me a few points for my inconvenience. Boston is where I grew up, know the area very well and recommend hotels and restaurants to people all over the world. Not happy member

The hotel is stunning. We were upgraded to a corner suite with all glass views if the skyline - an unexpected “gift” and greeted with sparkling wine as we entered the hotel. Staff were wonderfully friendly throughout and accommodating. We also had a lovely Italian meal at Scampo, and breakfast at Clink. When we forgot our phone in the car, the valet assistant went to retrieve it and brought it to us at dinner!

Cool historic hotel in great location at the end of Charles Street. Great location for walking over the Charles River to Cambridge - or walking through Beacon Hill. Very easy valet parking, since the hotel has an off-street entrance. Was greeted with offer for water sparkling wine upon arrival. Our room was one of the ‘jail’ rooms. Well appointed with wonderful bath products and Frette robes. ‘Tower’ rooms are in the new part of the structure. Woodwork in the common areas in the older part of the hotel could benefit from some touch up treatments. We grabbed a couple drinks and some delicious bites at the Clink bar - sharing the street tacos and pork and ginger pot stickers. Next time, would be excited to try the on-site restaurants.

This hotel was noisy, so much so that they had a security team remove guests from our floor. When we requested a different room to escape the noise, the hotel refused, saying that they had taken care of the problem. There was a loud banging noise outside as well - not sure if it was the air conditioning system or what but it banged every 15 minutes all night long. Location is not good - hard to get to and next door to Mass General. Not good for easy access to site seeing.

Our dinner at Scampo was okay. The fava bean pesto was outstanding! Our breakfasts at Clink was disappointing. The cappuccionos tasted like burned coffee & the croissant was stale. This is the second time I've had second-rate breakfast at Clink.

I have loved this hotel for years. My son’s graduation party was here in 2015 and I was a fan of the Liberty even before that.only problem in my opinion is it’s hard to get anything decent to eat if you are plant based or vegan.

As a renovated former jail, the decision to inform the decor with objects from its history...bars, old keys, padlocks, etc. creates an interesting, and unusual ambience. Given its location, there is no constraint on their setting prices, but I did find the dining to be expensive.

Positives: (1) beautiful hotel with nice restaurants and night life, (2) nice upscale room, (3) comfortable bed, (4) air conditioner works. Negatives: (1) my husband had a terrible food poisoning from the yogurt and granola from the breakfast at the Clink restaurant, (2) location not convenient for tourism, (3) view of my room was to the hospital next door, (4) they don’t offer the tour at the hotel anymore explaining the old jail. I wouldn’t come back.
