A lovely pub just outside Durham in High Shincliffe. It’s nicely done up and a mix of locals and travellers like me. The food is well priced and the drinks list extensive. The rooms are clean and comfortable. I LOVED my full English breakfast. You cannot fault this place for the price.

Bar and bar food are good. The room was very cold with no way of heating, even in bed! The shower was a trickle of water if you wanted any hot water, no pressure.

Warm welcome from very friendly staff. Lots of outdoor seating. Bedroom small but very comfortable, especially the bed. Very warm due to heatwave, but staff lent me a very effective fan. Near to Durham and you can catch a bus right outside.

My mum and best friend stayed at The Avenue, nice size room, very clean, tidy and well presented. Fantastic breakfast the next morning. They couldnt do enough for them. Even made them both a cup of tea whilst they say outside in the lovely area out the back. Will and have recommened The Avenue to friends. They are also organising events in the evening that myself and friends would like to go to....i live locally. Looking forward to visiting !! And i would like to say a big thankyou for looking after my mum !!

The hotel is clean and tidy. Staff attentive and well mannered. We stayed for 5 nights but did not have our bed linen changed or fresh towels, although we did ask for fresh towels. The bins in the room were not emptied during the 5 days. We also had to ask for tea, sugar and biscuits. They should have been replenished daily. The food is typical “pub grub”. Nothing special but tasty.

Top room with sloping roof and low beams was very comfortable, if you know how to avoid walking into them. Great bed, spotlessly clean. Worth knowing dinner service on sunday finishes at 6pm.

We stopped here on our way to and from a funeral.We were greeted warmly by the customers and by Claire,who apparently running The Avenue on a temporary basis.She looked after us from the moment we arrived to the moment we left.The food was excellent and good value for money.The rooms were clean and comfortable,though possibly need a bit of updating.We would stay again as it was one of. the friendliest pubs we have ever stayed in.Thanks to the clientele and especially Claire,ten out of ten.

Firstly, the location in the Hotels.com app is different to the postcode. Staff were incredibly friendly, from check-in, the breakfast, to check-out. Bathroom could do with a really deep clean, likewise tea and coffee station

Hotels.com had this hotel as listed much closer to Durham centre than it is I have reported this via email but had no response to that. It is a decent hotel, well priced. A few nit picks we were in the attic room and it was freezing. They made up for this with an extremely thick duvet that then had the opposite effect for me at least and was far too hot to lie under all night. Also one of the glasses and hand towels in the room were dirty. Breakfast was ok not amazing.

Arranged to pay on arrival which was more expensive to book since i booked a room for a colleague and we wanted to pay for own rooms, the hotel took payment prior to arrival and it has been a nightmare getting this straight. This is 6 rooms above a pub not a hotel, strict checkout at 11am and must leave premises at that time no reception or front desk. The room was dated, had no desk and the shower had several steps to enter which are dangerous when the floor is wet. We were charged £160 per room which i would say is £100 too much. The fact they take payment before you've seen the room indicates they know they are overcharging for what is on offer.

Great location less than10 minutes from Durham, so the perfect base without the price tag of Durham hotels. The staff where friendly and welcoming. The cooked breakfast was very tasty and plentiful. We did not try the dinner options, but it's a lovely, friendly pub. Our room was a great size and the bed was comfy with a lovely feather duvet. Would definetly stay again. Alina & Steve

They made up for this with an extremely thick duvet that then had the opposite effect for me at least and was far too hot to lie under all night. Also one of the glasses and hand towels in the room were dirty. Breakfast was ok not amazing.

The hotel is clean and tidy. Staff attentive and well mannered. We stayed for 5 nights but did not have our bed linen changed or fresh towels, although we did ask for fresh towels. The bins in the room were not emptied during the 5 days. We also had to ask for tea, sugar and biscuits. They should have been replenished daily. The food is typical “pub grub”. Nothing special but tasty.

Top room with sloping roof and low beams was very comfortable, if you know how to avoid walking into them. Great bed, spotlessly clean. Worth knowing dinner service on sunday finishes at 6pm.

A lovely pub just outside Durham in High Shincliffe. It’s nicely done up and a mix of locals and travellers like me. The food is well priced and the drinks list extensive. The rooms are clean and comfortable. I LOVED my full English breakfast. You cannot fault this place for the price.

Bar and bar food are good. The room was very cold with no way of heating, even in bed! The shower was a trickle of water if you wanted any hot water, no pressure.

Great location less than10 minutes from Durham, so the perfect base without the price tag of Durham hotels. The staff where friendly and welcoming. The cooked breakfast was very tasty and plentiful. We did not try the dinner options, but it's a lovely, friendly pub. Our room was a great size and the bed was comfy with a lovely feather duvet. Would definetly stay again. Alina & Steve

Lovely old-style pub with rooms on the first and second floors. Its outside of Durham, but so close out daily trips in and out of the city for a graduation were done in under 10 minutes and less than 10 GBP for the Uber. Super nice landlady, and I do recommend this accommodation.

Room was clean and comfortable, staff were really friendly and helpful. The bar had a cosy, comfy friendly local feel about it. The only thing I can mention negatively is that Expedia has the walking time to Durham down incorrectly. I think they meant it is a 13 minute drive not a 13 minute walk. This was no fault of the place where we were staying. It still wasn't a problem though, there is a bus stop straight across the road and an uber cost under £10. We didn't have food there because we'd already eaten, but there was plenty of choice on the menu all at a good price. We would definitely stay again
