Stayed 1 night

I’m extremely disappointed with how Element handled my reservation. On Friday, I accidentally booked a double room for the 19th when I actually needed the room for the 18th. As soon as I realized the mistake, I canceled the reservation for the 19th and immediately rebooked the double room for the correct date, the 18th. I then showed up and stayed at the property on the 18th. When I arrived, I was told that they were overbooked and did not even have the double room I reserved. I agreed to take a single room instead and didn’t make an issue out of it. The real problem came afterward: I was charged for BOTH reservations. The hotel is claiming the original reservation was non-cancellable, even though I wasn’t trying to cancel my trip or avoid paying for a room. I simply made an honest mistake with the date, corrected it immediately, rebooked at the same property, and actually stayed there. So Element got paid for the room I stayed in and charged me for another night that I never used, while at the same time they couldn’t even provide the room type I had reserved for the night I actually stayed. I understand cancellation policies, but there should also be some common sense and reasonable customer service. The hotel can clearly see that I corrected the date, made another reservation, showed up, and paid for my stay. Charging me for both reservations under these circumstances feels completely unreasonable. I would have expected Element to do a simple transfer or credit.
