The standard room was fine, the only thing was that the shower wasn't very clean. There was a lot of black build up in the shower head, which was off putting. However, for the price the rest of the room was fine. There also was only one working elevator so there was often a long wait for that.

Clean, modern hotel in walking distance of rail network and right in city centre. Excellent breakfast. Very comfy beds. . Negatives - no coffee in bar after 11 pm. No cocktails after 11pm. No plug socket near mirror in bedroom for using hairdryer. No cake/ snacks available in bar during the day. All negatives are only minor points though and so would definitely stay here again. Staff all very friendly .

The customer service was excellent. The hotel itself is lovely. The room was really beautiful and comfortable the only small issue we had was temperature control (the thermostat was a bit fiddly) and the water coming through the pipes from other rooms could be noisy at times but aside from that which wasn’t a major thing was fantastic. Breakfast was really good. The lifts however were not the best. One was out of order and the other was small so there were queues building up and they took a long time to arrive. Overall I would recommend this hotel as the suites are very luxurious. Comfy bed A+

Firstly this hotel advertises as a hotel with parking however this is not the case! they offer a discount of 25% off a very expensive near by Qpark as we stayed 2 days parking cost us a further £70 on top of the hotel cost had we know this we would have stayed elseware. We arrived and we initially given a room thar was not cleaned from the previous guests. We went back to reception and the girl there was very helpful changed our room immediately and also included complimentary breakfast for the following morning. However this breakfast wasnt great. Very little in the way of continental offerings just some crossants and jams. The cooked opitions are ordered and this took over 40 mins to arrive and when it did it was overcooked and very dry. We went to the bar for some drinks on the 2nd night and were told at 10pm that they had no lemon and lime for the gin as they had cleared up ready for breakfast! Which was very early in the night to be closing. The room was overall good even if not really to my taste with the bare plaster walls. Overall this is a decent enough hotel but its not one id stay at again.

Overall a good stay in their basic level room at a good price-point however a few issues irritate against an otherwise well presented hotel. The front desk staff throughout the stay were fantastic: very helpful and polite. The lobby area is calm and well presented. We arrived very early to our check-in time with the intention of exploring Manchester so asked if we could store our luggage. The staff informed us that a room was ready so we were able to check-in early at no extra cost, they also stored our luggage on the following day post check-out. This made our short trip so much easier and they also answered questions on travel around the city. The standard room was quiet and suitably equipped (bar our ability to find a hairdryer) the bathroom was clean and bright. Overall the room was clean but a few large stains (appeared to be red wine) on the floor and light staining on the bed throw are a bit disappointing for an otherwise fresh hotel presenting itself as a 4*. The sheets and duvet were however clean, fresh and the bed was very comfortable. The bar was a slight disappointment, very slow service even on a quiet night. Prices were typical for a hotel, but staff adding a service charge themselves while not even providing an ice bucket for white wine was a bit agitating especially given the speed earlier in the evening. A good stay in a good location at a fair price point otherwise.

Upon our arrival, the welcome felt irreverent, and the wait to get our keys much longer, with long awkward silence...when we finally did get our room number and key, we opened the door to a room that stunk and was not yet cleaned, though our arrival was well after 5 pm. Apologies were made, but the damage of first impression felt done. This being said, the hostess kindly offered us free drinks at the bar. When the room was cleaned after about a half hour, we entered to find that it still smelled quite putrid - the moldy shower curtain or old urine smell in the grout?; very dirty rug and just a general sense of discomfort in the room. Breakfast was lovely, and the waitstaff very kind. We will however choose not to return there should we ever be in Manchester again.

The shower curtain was stained (looked disgusting) and there was a wet ball of toilet paper in the bathroom when I first entered the room. I've asked to re-clean the bathroom and they did clean the bathroom but did not change the shower curtain (which I asked them to). I stayed there for one night so I just let it be but wouldn't recommend for the cleanliness. :(

Beautiful property outside and inside/public areas. Rooms were old and dated. Beds ancient with a matress topper to update, saggy and very noisy. Broken hairdryer (replaced). Bath didnt hold water (plug replaced), bath plug connector was broken/came out of the wall upon trying and absolutely filthy.. tea/coffee not replaced properly (random numbers of items that didnt match). There was 1 nice chair in the room! Ut for a family room for 4 ppl, 1 chair was a bit sad.

Extremely disappointed with the overall quality of the room. The room was a classic and had a number of stains all over the carpet, stains and marks all over the walls. In addition to this the sink was heavily cracked in the bathroom and we felt it was not very well maintained. Furthermore the desk was damaged and aesthetically look horrendous. This is a massive disappointment as it was for a special occasion and we left feeling that we will not be staying in The Alan again. I am more than willing to discuss this with the hotel chain at a higher level.

Excellent location in city center, by the Art Gallery. Very slow check-in (1 receptionist & very long queue, took about half an hour to get key despite online check-in). Overall nice building but strangely many things about the room design are odd: very low sink, short shower curtain which floods bathroom, writing desk with no suitable chair (only armchair), wardrobe split with a bar that crumples hanged clothes, tv placed at an odd angle not opposite bed...(the list goes on). That said, great breakfast.

Aesthetically nice hotel but not so practical, ran into several issues that gave me the ick, 1. The shower tray is open so the water is guaranteed to soak the entire bathroom, the sink tap is far too long that it also is made to soak the surrounding area, there is no plug for hairdryer in the bathroom, there isn’t even a plug near the mirror so it’s absolutely frustrating, you can assume the rooms are designed by someone without an eye for detail, we also had several issues with the air conditioning, overall this hotel has so much potential but it’s missing a lot of key elements to make it a perfect stay. The location and service are great so I’ll give it that.

I had a pleasant stay at the Alan but if I am honest I am slightly disappointed overall. The room and service were adequate but I expected better based off of the reviews and images I had seen online. The rooms were rather basic and lacked the luxurious touch I expected. The window in my room was small and I felt more like I was in an attic room. There was no main light, only accent lighting which made visibility difficult once the sun had set, which in winter is very early. The room didn’t contain usual hotel amenities such as shower caps, toothbrush etc. My ceiling was slanted which made the room feel a little closed in, it just didn’t wow me and other hotels within the same price range seemed to offer more.

Good hotel. Nice rooms as described online. Service very slow and considering the bar was dead I'm not sure why it took so long for us to be greeted considering we are hotel guests (15 mins we were sat down). Other people also leaving due to service. Such a shame as otherwise a lovely hotel and location.

Second stay at The Alan. First visit, great service, second the opposite. It took 5 attempts to order some olives at the bar, and other guests were leaving due to poor service. Not much better at breakfast service, incorrect orders, having to ask multiple times for drinks, and staff sloping off to chat with reception staff at any opportunity.

We stayed here overnight, checked in later than planned but managed to sort everything out and go to our room. First room we got given to us wasn’t pleasing as I wanted a bath/shower, a tv to face the bed and a bigger room so we went down to reception to change it. Luckily, one of the nice receptionists gave us a different room which was much better. Not to mention a £50 deposit fee had to be paid which would be transferred back to your bank the day after or we could add it onto charges for our room and get drinks at the bar or food at their restaurant. I didn’t mind this at all. The morning of our check out was fine, we might have checked out a few minutes late but we handed our keys in at reception which we were greeted nicely and we was about to leave when I asked about my room deposit. As I mentioned, the receptionist who checked us in said that we would get the £50 deposit back the day after if we didn’t decide to spend it all in the restaurant/bar (I spent £11 for 2 beers) I was owed £39. This other receptionist said I have to wait 3-5 working days for the transaction to get processed into my bank account!! I was left with no money as I spent most of it on the hotel, drinks and a takeaway. I was relying on this money the day after as I had to make my way to work but got told I have to wait!! I had to have the day off work as I was left stranded with no money! wouldn’t have minded if I had of got told of this. I will never stay here again!!

Luckily, one of the nice receptionists gave us a different room which was much better. I didn’t mind this at all. It has a very good check-in process that allows you to do this electronically before you arrive. However, there is only a one-person check-in desk where you collect your key, and if there is a queue, it somewhat negates the benefit of pre-check-in. The hotel charged me for the room a second time, instead of the £2.40 tourist tax. When I tried to phone them about this, I found the phone was constantly off the hook. There was also no reply on their WhatsApp number. Woeful customer service.

What a fantastic place to stay in central Manchester ! The hotel was super comfortable, spacious and relaxed. Spotlessly clean and the breakfast had so much choice and was excellent all round. However, by far the standout part of our stay at The Alan was…….the staff. James and his team were outstanding and made is feel incredibly welcome, nothing was too much trouble and all the restaurant and bar staff were amazing too. Great job everyone!

The service here really lets The Alan down. Check in efficient and friendly, but the evening service was CHAOS. It literally took us 30 minutes to get served 2 pints of beer. The rooms as ever are fabulous and thats why we repeat stayed but afraid this will be our last time.

Service was poor. No one would answer at the front desk for room service. Sent a message via WhatsApp, which is what the Alan also suggested doing… it wasn’t read until 5 days later. Gave up on room service and went out. Breakfast was a similiar standard of service.

Very nice hotel in a great location. Room was large and quiet, bed was extremely comfortable, staff were friendly, and everything was very clean. I didn't have time for breakfast but from a distance it looked excellent. My only criticism was that the shower was in a bath with a curtain and the shower head was very low. For such a nice hotel I'd have expected a dedicated shower cubicle. However, the shower worked and the water was hot so it's not like I suffered! Would definitely return here.

The hotel is walkable from Piccadilly station taking about 12 minutes. It is close to bars and eateries making it a good spot for a night out. I stayed with my granddaughter and had a room with two double beds, the room was huge. The bathroom had both bath and shower and the fridge, iron and ironing board were very helpful additions. The best part of the stay was the breakfast which was absolutely second to none. The choices were endless with options of full cooked buffet breakfast, continental, and also cooked to order special, absolutely brilliant.

Fantastic hotel - great decor with old and very modern touches. We were upgraded - great size room with everything we needed. Very convenient to everywhere edprcially China Town and Canal Street. Amazing breakfast with everything you could wish for buffet style. Highly recommended

Lovely, central hotel. Impressed by the really great decor and warm welcome. Fab spacious room too with the most enormous, comfy bed! Sadly all let down by terrible service at breakfast both mornings, they were obviously severely short-staffed. We waited over an hour to then be presented with a barely tepid Full English. Such shame as all the components were great! Our feedback was listened to, apologies made and our food was refunded however. Would definitely them another chance.

Not happy with our stay overall.we had a small dimly lit room but the main problem was at breakfast. The service was slow and when we did get served they gave us the wrong breakfasts and not what we ordered. So they had to be replaced which took a lot more time. We complained and the lady in charge said she would organise a refund for the breakfasts. Reception told us that they would contact you and you would sort out the refund (2x£17.00). I sent you an email regarding this on Monday 18th.but I’ve had no reply - not even an acknowledgement !

The location was great, both for dining opportunities and forgetting arround. Lovely buffet breakfast during weekends. The a la carte breakfast weekdays was a bit too much for the staff. We waited very long for food, had one faulty dish, and they totally forgot about the kids’ hot chocolate. Buffet all week would be better for them and us.

If l could give the staff six stars l would. So kind and helpful. There were three guys l spoke to today and yesterday who were just the best. Thanks to the tall man on reception who was the shift manager and the other two he’s works with. You are the best and a credit to your hotel.
