The Grand Hotel Birmingham

Quality amenities in a lovely building. The bed was comfy, TV smart and bathroom was well fitted. Only downside is the property is located in the city centre - on the weekends there can be loud music at venues nearby however the staff were quick to move us to a higher room to avoid being disturbed! Lack of parking is a universal issue for the city centre hotels but the B4 car park is a 5 minute walk away and was a good price with the hotel discount.

The Grand Hotel is a fantastic refurbishment, in a lovey building in the heart of the city. Very comfortable room and little noise. One small issue, having a bar the requires you book if you want a drink on Saturday afternoon, even as a resident, seems poor.

Great hotel - historic property that has been beautifully updated. The location is great - easy walk to lots of sights, shopping, restaurants etc and close to Birmingham New Street station. Staff were friendly, breakfast was tasty. There is no on-site parking but they provide a discount to a nearby car park. Our only complaint was that the bar /restaurant serves absolutely no food after 11pm - even on a Saturday night and when we tried to order room service they had nothing available except meat lasagna (at midnight?!!) or a cheese and tomato sandwich. There were other items on their 24 hour menu but they had run out. This seems pretty unforgivable for an upscale city hotel on a weekend.

The only thing that was disappointing was bar didn’t serve any non alcoholic lager or any sort of fruit cider not everyone likes wine or cocktails

Great city centre hotel- well located and walkable to shops and restaurants nearby. Close to central station also have parking nearby which they validate/discount. Small but well appointed gym and lovely in house bar. Room was spacious and quiet given the loaction

This is very much a specific issues as an electric wheelchair user. This is my second time visiting the hotel and the second time the lift, for wheelchairs to get in to the building has been malfunctioning. I was trying to get to an event for a start time, and the lift did not work. The staff seemed clueless on what to do, trying to find a manager, despite me saying it had happened before, and to just let me out through the staff route. I REALLY don't mind seeing the back of house when I'm in a hurry, especially as its all level access with a modern lift between floors. If you're in the same situation as me, needing a lift that isn't working, ask to go through the staff passage, its the key card locked door to the left hand side behind the reception desk. To The Grand, please sort the platform lift, it really lets down your hotel which is otherwise excellent, and the accessible rooms are fantastic, can't fault them, just fix the lift!

Great hotel right in the centre of Birmingham. Gorgeous interiors and friendly, welcoming staff. We used a nearby car park and got 50% off the price when we validated it at the hotels front desk. We will definitely be staying here again.

There were wedding parties in the ball room two nights. The sound from the DJ was audible until well after 2 am. Not at all quiet.

Comfortable room, bed, nice bathroom, gym small but nobody in it and the bar is good for lunch (those service was a little slow) or an evening drink.

Great place loved it.. I was there for a ball. Staff were great in reception. Bar open late night after the ball would have been good.. we had to walk a long way about 30 of us to have some late night drinks. Rooms were lovely.

Large deceased insect on windowsill. No TV channel summary. Beds that moved about. Up and down stairs to get to room. Shower head leaked from joint where it was screwed into connecting pipe. No ability to open window fir fresh air. Very convenient location, generally clean.

Room was slightly dirty - mould around lower panel of shower door, slightly stained sheets, 2 spiders in the 5 days I spent there. There is a small flight of stairs to go up from the street to the lobby. It was also my birthday which I mentioned when booking but there was nothing special from the hotel. Hence the points off for cleanliness and service. Was a pretty cool hotel otherwise and great location.

Great hotel. Even though slow service in the Madaleine bar, it has a nice ambience. Would recommend that you reserve a seat or else would end up on a bar stool which I deemed uncomfortable. Breakfast time service they could not do enough for you even though asked for brown sauce and got red. Room great, beds comfortable but housekeeping needs to sort out the cleanliness of the room as a lot of dust but that maybe is due to it being an old building. Would definitely recommend staying there.

The hotel itself is nice and very clean. Staff let it down, they must literally hire anyone, no people skills or customer service skills. I stayed in one of the suites, when paying premium prices to stay in Birmingham, I expect premium service not travel lodge experience

The service and condition of the hotel are very good. Except there was black stain (looks like mold stain) and yellow dots on the towel. It is totally unacceptable in such a high ranking hotel.

Great looking hotel. Bar outstanding. Bedroom pretty good but black out blinds and curtains useless. Sunshine woke us up around 5am not what was needed after good night out!

Beautiful hotel, with a lovely bar area. Our room (410) was big, but lots of wasted space. No dressing table and bad lighting. The bathroom needs blinds as it's uncomfortably bright in the morning. And despite being above the main street, you couldn't hear anything!

The hotel itself is a very good experience; however, the rooms were freezing when we first arrived and took an hour or so to warm up. Additionally, the room is very dark due to the gloomy lighting, making it difficult for my wife to get ready. The absence of a dressing table was also a bit of a negative.

Lovely room. Clean and with a good bed. Wish windows opened though as couldn’t figure out the temperature control other than off and on. Great shower as well. Managed to set off the smoke alarm as kettle didn’t switch off, but got it replaced immediately. Impressed with speed that staff got here, even if one of them did wander around checking for signs of smoking. (We don’t). Really loud party downstairs/outside that the non-opening windows didn’t block, that went on for hours. Fast check in.

I booked this property as a treat but ended up disappointed. The hotel looks very nice but beyond this it is distinctly average. The basic rooms are fairly small with nowhere to sit in front of a mirror to do hair or make up. Check in was slow as all the reception staff were focused on checking in a large group which created a backlog for everyone else. The shower was good, the bed comfy and air conditioning was a God send. The rooms are advertised as soundproof but they are not and I was kept up by loud bass music from a different section of the hotel until well after 11pm. There is nothing wrong with this hotel, it is very pleasant, but beyond the decor the basic rooms are nothing special and wish I’d stayed somewhere cheaper.

A decent sized room with a very comfortable bed. A high quality bathroom with an excellent shower. Good lifts and a lovely bar and restaurant. Great stay

Allowed us to check in much earlier than recommended time. Swift and polite room service. All staff incredibly polite and helpful to the point where a more senior member of staff happened to be having debrief by my door and took my case and carried it outside for me. Breakfast food and service stunning- would 100% stay again!

Great location in Birmingham! The staff were absolutely amazing—so friendly and helpful. The bar is stunning, and the facilities are spotless and well maintained. Couldn’t have asked for a better experience.

Beautiful Hotel. Staff was 50/50. We were expecting a local call that couldn't call our cell phones and the staff could not figure out how to transfer the call to our room so we missed the call. Door people were awesome, as were bar staff. Front desk seemed to have one competent woman. Maid service kept leaving us only one towel, not emptying garbage or replenishing toilet paper. Room was very nice and comfortable though.

Check in was friendly but there was no information about restaurant or breakfast times & no information pack in the room. The room was excellent- apart from the plug to the coffee machine not working. Lovely bathroom. Our even meal in Isaac’s was delicious. Sadly it all went wrong the next day. Breakfast “service” was terrible. We waited an hour to be brought our food. When we asked why it had been delayed as literally everyone else had been served a very surely woman brought our plates out - dumped them on the table & muttered enjoy! I fed this back at reception & got an “oh sorry about that”. The worst is yet to come. The next day whilst I was checking my bank account I noticed an additional charge of nearly £500! I tried to call the hotel multiple times & the phone was never answered. I emailed to complain to be given a frankly ridiculous excuse that the charge was for a “no-show” that had originally been booked to my room. Rubbish! I did not authorise my card for extras so how did they even charge it? After a promising start this was all such a let down. I would not stay in this hotel again.

I was greeted by a most welcoming lady for check in - she couldn’t have been more helpful! I explained I had a phobia of lifts and asked where the stairs were and she immediately explained she would change my room from the 4th floor to the 2nd floor for ease and that she would arrange for someone to take my luggage to my room for me. This was appreciated more than she will ever know from someone who has massive anxiety over having to potentially use a lift! I had various conversations over my stay with this lady (sorry I did not get her name) and she genuinely made my stay better than could have been expected from her warm and friendly approach to hospitality especially as I was travelling alone. The room was very spacious, spotlessly clean, the bed incredibly comfortable and so quiet at night! I returned to my room from running the Birmingham Half Marathon and a lady had just finished servicing room - she was lovely and chatted to me about my run and again couldn’t have been more helpful! This hotel is absolutely value for money and will definitely stay again when in Birmingham. Thank you for making me feel so welcome! 😊

Our stay was very nice. The staff was polite and responsive. The only reason staff and service got only 4 stars was because of the poor service in Isaac's (one of their restaurants). Everything else was great!

My friend and I booked a twin room, and I checked in first. Upon arrival, I found only one set of towels, one bathrobe, and two small bottles of water—clearly set up for just one guest. Slippers were also missing, despite the tiled bathroom floor, so I had to request them at reception. On our first night, we visited the Madeleine bar, only to discover we couldn’t charge drinks to the room because “there was no credit.” This happened because we weren’t asked for a credit card for a deposit at check-in, so we had to pay on the spot. The bathroom lacked both a toilet brush and a toilet douche. When I requested a brush, housekeeping brought one without a holder. Reception informed me that the rooms aren’t equipped with brushes or douches, suggesting that I contact housekeeping if needed. This was especially frustrating given that I was sharing the bathroom, and it’s not pleasant to leave it uncleaned. After complaining, we received a brush with a makeshift holder fashioned from a plastic container, which worked but felt like a workaround. The shampoo and shower gel were inconvenient to use. The bottles were fixed to the wall, making them impractical, as they had to be removed to use. The fragrance was quite masculine and musky—not something everyone, particularly women, might enjoy. On the positive side, the beds were very comfortable. However, the main entrance of the hotel has steps, and more steps lead to reception and the room. There was no usher to assist with luggage.

Close to centre, bull ring, ICC, train station. Good sized rooms well equipped and comfortable.

Very convenientlly located and beautifully furnished. The dining options within the hotel are limited but this is not an issue because there are so many other restaurants close by. Walkable to New Street train station.

The hotel is oozing of old world charm, but the location its clearly not what it was during its high day. Cathedral Square after dark can best be described as a ghetto and we took long de-tours to avoid the area, but the hotel is situated only 100 yards from the before mentioned square. Trying to smoke a cigarette outside was simply impossible due to the sometimes aggressive beggars that always floats around. A few details, such as not getting the room cleaned until 5.20pm, broken window locks which meant the windows couldn't be sealed and poor English from reception staff also drags down the overall score

One night stay to attend a concert at Birmingham Symphony Hall. Hotel great location for Birmingham centre. No parking but Snow Hill car park was only a couple of minutes walk away plus train station was also convenient had we decided not to drive. Fine looking hotel in nice central area. Due to a Kate night we had breakfast in bed with came promptly after ordering and was fine. Room was nice and adequate for our short term needs. We would definitely stay there again if revisiting Birmingham.

Average hotel dressed up to be something more than what it is. Breakfast was appealing, had to ask 5 times for a coffee. Brought me my breakfast with uncooked eggs, some disgusting tomatoe relish and had the cheek to charge £2 for hash browns. Are you for real!?! Wouldn’t go back in a hurry

Overall stay was good and the Grand suite itself was amazing. However, breakfast was quite disappointing to say the least. If you book a grand suite it would be customary to provide a decent table big enough to hold breakfast items for two. To then proceed with forgetting the breakfast order and having to be reminded after nearly half an hour is disgraceful. And when the breakfast actually arrived it was in a horrid state. Black pudding was overcooked and not edible. The sole of my shoe would have been more tender than the bacon provided which was a shame as the flavour hinted to a nice bacon. The poached egg felt as if it had been precooked and left lying around.(?) The circular thing which presumably was a mushroom could have been left out as it was disgusting. The staff did not give the impression of serving a five star hotel breakfast experience either. Overall extremely disappointing as it was in line with motorway hotels.. (As it was getting late we could not stay longer for a second attempt. Don’t think it would have improved anything either) I would suggest getting a breakfast takeaway and eat in your room.

Had a great stay at The Grand Hotel. Lovely room, nice bar. Only slight downside was a chaotic breakfast on our second day. Service seemed to be left to one hard working lady and elements of the ‘full English’ had been shown to the grill rather than cooked more fully. In contrast, the previous day’s breakfast had been spot on.
