Great, stylish property in a central downtown neighborhood. Comfortable, well-designed & appointed rooms. Excellent restaurant/bar on site. Hotel’s reception is found in a spacious lounge-bar area that doubles as a workspace & comfy social gathering spot during the day. Plenty of street (metered) parking available in addition to paid lots. Close to perfect…wish I could have stayed longer!

This is a beautiful hotel conveniently located in downtown. The bed and shower were both luxurious. Many great restaurants nearby. My husband liked the pool table in the lobby. The only downside was having to go to the parking garage, which was a long walk into the next door building and two flights of stairs away. There was a lot of construction when we visited (April 2025) which is temporary. Overall a good experience.

The design of the rooms at this property is excellent. I haven’t seen this exact bathroom and wardrobe layout before, and I wish all hotels had it. On the other hand, the hotel has very little in the way of service. There is no Bellman, no Valet, and the parking is really inconvenient, with the entrance to a shared parking garage on the other side of the block. It’s not an area you’d want to walk around in at night.

The staff was very nice, the food is great in the restaurant. My only issue is the parking, it’s expensive. I paid $61 to park overnight. I didn’t expect it to be that much.

Clean and comfortable, interesting details. Service, and amenities great. I recommend using the underground garage parking, easier to get a space and feels more secure than surface lot. Best hotel in downtown Des Moines.

The hotel is very attractive when you walk in- the lobby and restaurant - are nicely decorated. The staff was pleasant enough. The food was good and service was adequate. The exercise area is very nice with several machines and we never found it too busy. This area was clean. Downsides: no coffee maker in the room- you have to go the lobby for free coffee- which wass empty. When you check in you had to schedule what day you would like your room serviced- which we did, however, it did not happen. Our room was never serviced. we placed our used towels in the shower the day we had scheduled and then returned to our room late that night only to find nothing had been done. The front desk did bring us towels. The amount of dust and dirt on the window sills and ledges of furniture was remarkable. One of the beds in our room was completely sloped so to stay on the bed you had to be in the middle of it so you didn’t slide off. There are no ice makers or buckets so if you would like ice you have to get it at the front desk. I understand not wanting to have noisy ice makers around but we found it inconvenient. Lastly, the area around the hotel is a bit sketchy. There are many vagrants in the area. We woke up in the middle of the night to loud screaming and fighting on the street.

Very clean and modern hotel located in downtown Des Moines. Staff was very friendly and helpful. They even made my husband a cup of coffee even after the coffee bar had closed. We also ate at the on location restaurant for lunch and it was delicious (guests get 10% off their meal too!)

Staff was excellent. Hotel property is a nice mix of new and old historic hotel. More attention needs to be given to cleanliness: bathroom vanity, floors, bar top in breakfast area and outside perimeter.

The hotel has a very beautiful aesthetic which I appreciate. The rooms have a masculine vibe with all of the dark wood. The bathroom door and sink are too big for the room with two beds. In my opinion, a smaller vanity and a pocket door would be better. Also the shower’s hot water was a bit wonky. There is a mini bar and tiny stocked fridge in room but no microwave. Each room has a eco feature keycard. This means the card placed in slot activates the lights and needs to be in place to turn on. Just a heads up, the elevator has minimal lighting. A perk of the stay was free coffee in the lobby until 10am. However if you wake up late or just prefer a latte, there is a coffee shop in the lobby. The only issue I had was the train whistle and horn that could be heard throughout Des Moines at all hours. I recommend some ear plugs if you’re a light sleeper like myself. Furthermore, everyone was super nice and helpful and I would stay here again.

Beautiful hotel, amazing staff, markets just around the corner. The beds are well used, meaning ours you could tell everyone sleeps on the right side. Flattened and not as comfy as it could be. Be aware- close to train tracks. Each morning 6-7a, 1-3 trains would blare their horns, also near state house, bells toll at all hours.

Attention to aesthetics was very nice upon entry. Welcoming front desk staff that provided disclosure of amenities. Rooms are clean with a helpful fridge. Guests should be aware that the hotel is in near proximity of the train track system. Overnight there will be a midnight -1am noice disturbance. The hotel offered complimentary ear plugs for this. Overall a very reasonable option for guests visiting the downtown Des Moines area.

This is an updated/modern boutique hotel in the heart of downtown DesMoines. We were here for a musical. Room is small but well designed, awesome bathroom. Could use a little better/brighter lighting, but overall great. It would be nice if there was a way to get from the hotel to the garage indoors, but it was only a short walk.

The hotel is beautiful- the woodwork details in our room and the tile were lovely! A major inconvenience in the rooms is the lack of shelving... nowhere more than a ledge to to set any luggage and the bathroom has nowhere to set toiletry bag/hot tools/clothes for after your shower (there isn't even enough sink vanity top to utilize). The food from Mulberry Street Tavern was delicious, but the service was shockingly slow and inattentive. We had similarly odd experiences with the hotel staff. It almost seemed like they were reading from a script, and not actually hearing or responding to what we were saying. You could almost watch their attention drift off mid-conversation. It was laughably odd! It was a nice hotel for sure, but an awkward experience overall. We probably wouldn't stay again, all things (including the price) considered.

Second stay at the Surety. Interesting and well designed hotel in a historic building. Noticeable decline in quality of service. Front desk staff gives off an “I’m too busy, what do you want, vibe”. A little bit too cool for school for us. The rooms are great.

The hostess at the restaurant and several staff were very rude to myself and our friends, who were also staying at the hotel, when basic questions were asked and when we asked for a table at the restaurant. Additionally the manager at the bar said he would refund a portion of our breakfast as it didn’t appear for over an hour and only came out when we were getting the bill. I never received a refund. I think they were understaffed or were overwhelmed by hockey players and a wedding taking place that same weekend. Pretty disappointing as it’s a stylish hotel. It’s been a very long time since I received such poor hospitality.

The hotel itself was very bean and unique. The staff in the restaurant were very rude. Went to have drinks before dinner, no one there to greet you or let you know that dinner didn’t start until 5. Sat at the bar after asking the bar tender if that was ok, he said it was fine. Then basically was ignored the entire time we sat there. Would not ever dine there…

Stay was great until i went to the lobby to check out and retrieve my vehicle from valet. There were what appeared to be 2 employees working the front desk. However only one was helping a customer, as i stood there with my bags for over 10 minutes the other employee avoided eye contact and never once asked if she could help me. So i thought she was perhaps busy doing something i could not see. Then a gentleman came down to the lobby and she promptly helped him. I spoke up and said excuse me, youve seen me standing here for 10 minutes while he (her coworker) helped a couple and never spoke up and asked if i needed assistance. She pretended not to hear me, although i am sure she did as everyone else in the lobby looked at me & then her. Absolutely horrible customer service. I will not return to this hotel.

Loved the decor. The staff was great. We had an event at the Civic Center and easy walk to there. There is a convenience store a couple doors down. Morning coffee was from a local coffee shop for a nice touch. We ate at the onsite restaurant, and it was excellent, especially the drinks! Two options for parking, one underground that are super convenient. Will stay here again.

The hotel was great. However, the location is downtown and I felt very uncomfortable walking around (even just the block) for food etc with the large amount of homeless individuals on the street. Most were clearly intoxicated and on drugs and laying on the street. We tried to avoid one lady yelling and putting another man in a headlock. I refused to be out after dark. I was with my child and felt uncomfortable walking. Just be aware of the environment around the hotel. But… the hotel was beautiful inside.

My girlfriend and I loved our stay here. The room was beautiful and clean. The night scene and restaurants around the hotel were great and everything was walkable. The huge farmers market a block away was a bonus and made for a great breakfast option. We will stay again.

A very nice hotel in a bad neighborhood. It’s very close to the criminal court, legal aid and bus station. We were panhandled as soon as walked out the front door. The hotel restaurant is good, but only serves dinner. There isn’t much to do nearby. So you’re kind of stuck there ordering delivery or driving someplace.

This was a lovely hotel, very close to the Skywalk, which is an amazing walking network, connecting much of the downtown area - safe, secure, and climate controlled. I was in a tournament at the Iowa Events Center and it was an easy 15 minute walk - no car, no hassle! The staff were friendly and helpful. Des Moines has a lot of construction going on.

Overall stay was 9/10! The area around the property is a little sketchy as there is a liquor store a few doors down and questionable people standing outside. The hotel itself is really nice and the staff was very friendly.

Old bank building retains its original charm in sleek updated rooms. We stayed on 11th floor and had a killer view. Restaurant was overpriced and food was not good. Both meals were a bust or we’d give this 5 stars

The Surety is our home away from home with an attentive, caring, and professional staff as well as amenities that you find at larger chain hotels without the uptick in room rate. The in-dining restaurant has an outstanding menu and bar for a business lunch or cocktail after work. If you haven’t stayed at the Surety, you should!

The hotel is stunning! So much character. The tavern connected is delicious, as is the breakfast & coffee bar. We walked around the city (it’s close to so much!) but ended up spending most of our time at the hotel and tavern there. The staff at every turn was so friendly.
