The feature room was absolutely gorgeous and we enjoyed jazz in the bar. The service at breakfast was a bit sporadic and the coffee machine in the breakfast room didn’t work properly, causing some queues and confusion! Helpful staff on reception and in the bar and we were able to charge our electric car which was a big help (and softened the slow of the car parking charges!)

The Gonville is a fantastic choice of hotel for a stay in the centre of Cambridge. It is beautifully appointed and the staff are polite, friendly and helpful. The hotel is perfectly situated for all of the highlights of Cambridge without being right on the busy tourist streets. The complimentary Vintage Bentley tour with Zane is an absolute must if you are new to Cambridge. Great experience with a very knowledgeable host to get you oriented and make you feel like royalty. We can fault the hotel and highly recommend.

Comfy, lovely hotel within a short walk from the centre, facing park area. Pros: Excellent breakfast and reception service. Gorgeous scented toiletries and very comfy bed. Great gardens for a sundowner. Car parking 2 min walk away (no charge from 6pm - 8am). Cons: Bar closed early at 23:00, in fact as soon as we walked in! Walls could do with a bit of soundproofing (could hear guests speaking next door although not too intrusive, I always bring ear plugs to hotels anyway). Milk and coffee sachets missing from refreshments so a keener eye for detail needed.

This is a first class hotel. Very nice if small rooms. The staff were very helpful. Dinning was very good. Parking was available and included Tesla electric car charging (one of two stations working). Located across the street from University and easy walking distance to major sites and museums.

We had a lovely stay. Particularly loved the Bentley tour where we were taken out to see some of the surrounding areas that we otherwise would not have visited. Hotel location was perfect and staff were all very helpful.

We stay here while visiting family living nearby. The location is great near to family and walking distance to city centre. We love the shops and restaurants in the centre and the hotel restaurant is great as well with good views onto Parkers Piece. The room was very comfortable but there were some stains on the carpet and a little mould on the bathroom ceiling. Whenever we stay at this hotel we have always found the staff to be excellent; friendly, polite and helpful - will obviously stay here again.

Excellent service from reception staff on arrival. Cleanliness of the room and the decor was nice. The hotel is beautiful l, light and airy inside. However on our stay, there must have been some staffing issues in the kitchen and catering as slow to get drinks and unfortunately didn’t taste the breakfast as the wait was so long and we had to check out but I wouldn’t let it spoil going back again.

We had been to the Gonville hotel many times before; our go-to hotel in Cambridge. We were surprised and disappointed that the service and cleanliness were much poorer than previous visits. There were food crumbs and a plaster in the lift the whole time we were there, so not checked or cleaned. Breakfast choices were far less than previous trips. The continental breakfast items had clearly been out a long time with no cover. Items were not replenished, so basics like bread and jam ran out. Lots of staff but no one taking responsibility for replenishing items! There were no teaspoons on the tables. When asked, a staff member said they were short of them! Not difficult to go to a shop and buy a few more is it?! The main restaurant only serves Peruvian food - we had booked, looking forward to it but after perusing the menu, with little choice, we left and went elsewhere. We would expect a variety of different kinds of dishes at such a hotel restaurant! This may seem trivial, but they add up and we were disappointed, having brought my mother in law for a weekend treat and being embarrassed that it wasn’t any where as good as before. I would expect more from an expensive 4-star hotel! We found out the hotel had recently changed hands so that explained it! Now part of a chain of 4 hotels. Bring back the previous management! We won’t be back.

This is a well situated hotel with good rooms - though attention to detail is lacking in bathroom where there were grouting issues and fixtures not quite fitted well. All staff were polite and courteous but we didn't feel any warmth or genuine sense of welcome about the place. To the extreme where the bar staff chose to ignore us standing at the bar for several minutes while they busied themselves with glasses. Predominantly elderly clientele made the place feel a little like a grand old people's home.

I have respectfully addressed the many issues with a polite reception lady who listened to concerns and said she has adjusted bill. However nasty x 2 staining on beige carpet, total chaos at breakfast (50 min wait for hot drinks alone) staff not appearing to be trained in any form of customer service, lack of cleanliness in bar area, long wait in empty bar does make me remember we have choices where we stay. Lift was out of order too. Waiting on part. Hence our GF room - layout was not the best and bed being less than 2 feet from opaque bathroom glass door was not a good design in any way (could clearly see someone sitting on loo) Sink to shower door was also very tight in space (fat or pregnant - be warned it’s a v v painful squeeze) Sliding glass door of bathroom was off runner, shower needed re-siliconing (as leaked into toilet base causing a slip hazard), a/c didn’t work (tho a fan in wardrobe), requested softer pillows on door hanger left in room - never received any so overlooked. Finally I booked and paid extra for a late 2pm check out - was called x 2 & door visited at 11.20am to “hasten our exit” 🙈. And asked for a Bentley trip - was told to email bentley@gonvillehotel.co.uk. Did that. Now home after 3 day trip - not heard a thing from them. That part really sucked for old fella. It was an overall very disappointing stay I’m afraid. Shall look at other hotels also when I next book corporate staff rooms.

The service is very friendly and the bed is comfortable - nice decor and quiet rooms. However a few issues. First, we had very little hot water for the second day - morning and evening - and while this was rectified when we went to reception I'd expect the hotel to have an alert when the boiler needs resetting, not to wait until one of the guests complains. Second, the tea/coffee station wasn't refilled so there was no coffee or milk - we had to ask for some, and it was left in the room in a sanitary disposal bag. Choosing to keep the kettle and tea/coffee station in the wardrobe is odd and may mean housekeeping forget it. Finally despite the room being prepaid the hotel placed an additional hold on our debit card of nearly £500 'for incidentals' which frankly seems excessive. This has not yet been returned. Overall this could be really nice but some quite basic things went wrong which you can easily rectify, I think.

Staff and service were excellent, friendly and helpful. The public areas of the hotel were lovely and it was a great location. The breakfast service was a little chaotic with a number of failings, food very nice however. Our room was a little disappointing, we were at the back of the hotel and the room smelt musty. Also lacked a fridge and coffee machine. To be fair fridge was not listed on booking, coffee machine was, for the money I want somewhere to keep my water cold. Overall a pleasant stay.

We had a lovely stay at the Gonville. I marked it down slightly due to the room (classic double) being a bit snug, particularly in the bathroom. As the bathroom was so small, a sliding door would work better and could easily be fitted giving more space, it would also prevent the water damage at the bottom of the door, caused by the walk in shower overflowing under the door. The room was long but narrow making it difficult to walk past the bottom of the bed without banging your head on the wall mounted tv. The room was decorated very nicely and had a clean homely feel. One pet peeve at all hotels, is the sticker in the bathroom asking you to be eco friendly by re-using towels, and to leave them on rails if you don't want them changed. But, they still change them!

Warm welcome and speedy check in. The room was small and the bathroom tiny. Poor lighting made the room dark and the dark wardrobe without a functioning light in it made it difficult to locate anything in it. There was no ironing board or iron but the steamer worked well. Disappointingly there was no coffee machine. The toiletries smelt lovely as did the hotel upon entry. Breakfast had good choices but unfortunately my cooked breakfast was missing an item. Pleasant stay despite a few small niggles would absolute recommend staying here for the location and the excellent staff.

We Love this hotel great service great staff well trained. The only reason for the less than excellent is, the rooms were so dark and I mean not enough lighting. It was impossible to read. It may have to do with the energy conservation, and I admire that. But not being able to read in the room is a negative.

Staff were excellent, helpful and friendly. The rooms were fairly dark which made reading difficult. My only negatives would be the bathroom was very small with no hanging space and the wet towels I’d put on the shower floor to be replaced were refolded and put back to reuse. Also, our toilet roll wasn’t replaced. These were very quickly replaced when mentioned to reception though.

Tiny double room, with little space between foot of bed and wall. Tiny bathroom. Wardrobe shallow and only short hanging space. Worst feature was broken air conditioning on a warm humid night. Lift also broken but fortunately we didn’t have heavy luggage. Beware if booking through Expedia that breakfast isn’t included.

Lovely hotel, went there for Valentine’s day with my girlfriend. Lovely room, great bar staff. However, had a valentine’s meal in the restaurant, which was extremely poor service. Waited an hour and forty minutes for a meal The restaurant manager made no apology for the shocking service and the head waiter didn’t have a clue what she was doing or serving. Was served sparkling wine warm. Then given an ice bucket 10 minutes later. Not once did the waiter come over and ask if we wanted another drink. We were not impressed by the check in experience, there was nobody at reception and after we waited a while, we had to try to locate them through the hotel. Then when they finally arrived, no apology and an overly casual attitude. Throughout our stay we tried to contact reception but nobody was ever available. We enjoyed a wonderful stay at The Gonville. The hotel was excellent in every respect- beautiful decor, great restaurants and convenient parking. However, the outstanding aspect of the hotel was the wonderful staff. Every person we dealt with from the receptionists, to the barmen, to the housekeeper delivered perfect customer service. I’d especially like to thank Dante (?) the receptionist for taking care of us. Highly recommend The Gonville, Cambridge!

From the moment we arrived we were made very welcome and the concierge was extremely helpful and informative. The service was very good, both housekeeping of the room which was thorough and at breakfast which was rapid and efficient. The staff were friendly and nothing was too much trouble.

The room was lovely and the shower worked well. We were happily surprised to have a “pillow menu” from which we could choose different pillows from 6 options. That was a first. The breakfast should have been great, with items cooked to order, but my eggs Benedict were so bad, I stopped after one bite. The hollandaise tasted like it had vinegar in it. The croissants from the buffet were stale, so I ended up making myself toast for breakfast. The continental buffet is £15 and goes up to £20 with the menu. I don’t recall what we paid when we booked, but it was too much.

I had checked in advance for a vegan breakfast and was assured this was not a problem and indeed I was given a vegan breakfast menu on check-in, which looked fab. Tried to order this at breakfast but the restaurant staff (and kitchen) acted as if they had never seen the menu before. We were then told that the Vegan Menu options of Tofu Omelette and Vegan sausages, were NOT vegan at all. And there were also no saute potatoes or hash browns available. I ended up with one mushroom, some avocado and some sliced raw tofu (unflavoured and inedible) and toast made with bread I had brought myself (gluten free and vegan). Reception staff did deduct breakfast from the bill, but the hassle we had with the restaurant staff over trying to order something vegan for breakfast really spoiled the day. For a hotel of this standard in a thriving, cosmopolitan city, I expected better. I would expect a full vegan breakfast to be available on the menu as a standard option. There is no excuse for it not being in this day and age.

Fried egg was over cooked, brown crispy ring around the outside edge. So I chose poached eggs the next morning which were cooked perfectly. All in all a lovely memorable stay. Good comfortable room. Dinner was good but a one page menu. Breakfast was a joke. For this quality of hotel I don't expect to be queuing up at the single coffee machine for a drink. Very lovely hotel, staff very approachable and helpful, perfect location to explore Cambridge. The downside was the food which was disappointing, not well cooked, and for what you got expensive. Have enjoyed much better fare at far less prestigious hotels where there was a really effort to present fresh, vibrant and tasteful meals cooked with care, flare and overall consideration.
