Overall, Maya Ocean Resort is a good hotel, though I would rate it closer to a 4-star property than a 5-star. Rooms are spacious, comfortable, but for a 5 star hotel I expect basic amenities such as conditioner and body lotion. The staff deserve a full 5-star rating. Everyone we interacted with was friendly, professional, and service-minded. No complaints at all. So why the lower rating? One thing that stood out was the offer to upgrade to the "Privilege" package immediately upon arrival. It felt more like a money-making exercise than a genuine value-add. Btw, I'm glad we chose not to upgrade, as it would not have been worth the price. What also detracted from the experience is the external vendors on the property. During our stay there was a market event, I certainly prefer not to be approached by salespeople while on holiday. The hotel shop charged what I consider unreasonable prices - a package of bandages costs USD 15 - it’s taking advantage of the resort's remote location. We booked four excursions through the hotel's tour representative. He claimed having done all four recently, but none of them matched the descriptions given. I believe the hotel should be more selective about the partners it chooses. Finally, a small but suggestion: guests could be informed that the balcony doors should be kept closed, to avoid local coatis enter the room and steal food. They're charming and very quick - it’s not good to know. Overall nice stay - but room for improvement.
