Hakone Onsen Ryokan Yaeikan

Overall a really pleasant experience with some minor issues. Cost: We paid $320 USD for a 1 night, last minute for their most basic room. Facilities: Overall the hotel is fine but is clearly on the older side with some differed maintenance that may bother some. For the price we paid we thought that it was ok but not great. Everything was clean. Onsens are good though extremely hot. The best pool is the outdoor one, make sure to try it. The reservable (free) private onsens is also great. We found the futons to be very comfortable and we both had a great night sleep. The sona in the room was also a nice surprise. Food and service: both excellent. The dinner in particular was exceptional and the quantities were right. Expect a lot of fish even for breakfast. Paying for such quality food at a restaurant would easily cost $100/person total for both dinner and breakfast. Therefore the "room" was only around $150. Extras: We booked a 40 minutes massage ¥7700 and that was awesome. The Japanese style massage was very different from a typical oil massage and is well worth the experience. The gentleman that performed the massage spoke good English & Spanish and some basic French. He was also very friendly!

Great location. Walking distance from Hakone-Yumoto station. Food was good and served beautifully. Hot springs were great. We had a private bath time but the communal baths were even better and not crowded at all.

Very good location, close to the bus stop. 1 bus away from Odawara train station. Walkable to local train station also. Service was excellent and the food was amazing. There are no elevators, only stairs, and this can be challenging for people with physical conditions. It is a traditional Japanese style hotel (ryokan), so you eat sitting on the floor, and they put out and packed away the mattresses each day; and not much furniture (chairs) to sit on. Onsen water (the outside one) can be a bit cleaner.

This hotel is a charming and historic place full of character. The staff were incredibly kind and attentive, always ready to help. The food was absolutely delicious, and the highlight of our stay was definitely the relaxing hot spring baths. A truly special and memorable experience.

We stayed for a night and had the traditional dinner and breakfast, both of which were fantastic and served by the very friendly staff. We stayed in a room with a private onsen with mountain views which was beautiful and definitely worth it. The ryokan is only a 5 minute walk from the main station in the area and it's conveniently located near a lot of shops. We loved our stay and would definitely come again.

A beautiful and traditional Japanese ryokan in a wonderful area. You can take the local buses to a variety of historic hiking trails and the nearby Hakone shrine on the lake. The rooms at Yaeikan were clean and nice. The hot baths were small but satisfactory, one of the baths has a very nice outdoor pool. Men and women's baths are separated, and switch off once a day so that the opposite gender can experience the amenities of the other bath. There is traditional kaiseke dinner and breakfast included, although we had a bad service experience. We were only 5 minutes late for dinner (it was raining and we were rushing back from our hike) but the dinner service staff was visibly upset, which we can understand because it is rude to not be punctual in Japan. However, she spent about 10 minutes reprimanding us for being late in Japanese (at first which we could not understand because we don't speak Japanese) and then struggled to use Google translate in order to continue reprimanding us. It gave us a very bad start to the meal, and she had to be in and out of the room for the next hour in order to serve the multi-course meal, which made things awkward and very unenjoyable for all involved. In addition, she rushed our meal—she was expecting us to finish a near 8-course meal in 45 minutee. Unfortunately this was the experience that came to define our stay here. I would love to return to Hakone, but we will try another ryokan.

Both private and public onsen options. Dinner and breakfast were very tasty. Futons very comfortable and very friendly service. Our a/c struggled a little to keep up with the hot humid weather, but otherwise excellent stay

Has old onsen charm, some of the things are well worn, but its part of the charm of the onsen. Many diffrent springs, private to public open air. Very friendly staff, limited english.

The hotel is at the heart of Hakone. We expected good services at the hotel. The front desk can speak English well, which makes the first impression good. The lady who is responsible for the room is very nice and responsible to our requests. We really appreciated that. A few things can be better: 1/ extra towels require extra charges, which is the first time we experienced for staying in hotels; 2/ the breakfast is good while the dinner is average. The dinner has good variety but seems not very fresh; 3/ run out of tissues; 4/ some insects in the room; 5/ room was not cleaned after the first day of the stay. Used towels and garbage is still there.

The bathroom in our room smells worst than most public restrooms. The meals are not great. As my son put it, apparently the only good food is Sashimi, which doesn’t require cooking. This whole experience wasn’t welcoming and I certainly will stay in regular hotel rather than Ryokan from now on.

The food is okay but the hotel is old and dirty. Saw a big cockroach in the room. Told staff but just said sorry and provided no compensation.

The onsen and food was lovely - exactly what I was hoping for. However the combination of renovations meaning we looked out into construction, wet carpet in the corridor and walking past all the back of house operations took away from the experience. The front desk staff and the lady who delivered the food were lovely however the other staff were very brusque - I felt like we were in trouble or a nuisance.

温泉はいいお湯でした。 食事も程よい量で内容も悪くない。 設備は古く清潔感もいまひとつ。 部屋は何となく古びた匂いがしました。 浴衣もクリーニングはしてあるけどクタクタでやはり古びた匂いが気になりました。 階段や廊下は歩きにくいので、高齢者や足が悪い方には厳しいかも。

The room we stayed in was amazing. Beautiful views over the river and through the trees. Very spacious with a wonderful small onsen in the room. The food was varied coming in three courses. The futons for sleeping were very comfortable. Overall very pleased. Quite expensive but worth it. A warning though is that hotels.com no longer gives a free night for every 10 stays, now it is more like 40 nights!!

Everything was perfect! Room and other amenities are clean and great services. And traditional ryokan dinner was fantastic!!!! That was a good lecture for my daughter studying culinary arts. The private bathtub is enough to take a good rest. I'll visit again.

We stayed at this ryokan for 2 days, and we really like it, especial the onsen and the lady was introduce us to the room, and service us the dinner and breakfast, I forgot to ask her name, we like her so much, we hope she have a good health and happy in her life and her job, we will come back to visit her later. The ryokan is old but quite nice, and clean. It is close to the train station, and close to the shopping street. We was enjoy there for the last 2 days in Japan. The food is good, first time in my life have a lot of sashimi like that time, I will keep it in my memory. I hope I can come back to there soon.

三階の部屋に泊まりました。部屋風呂は良かったですが部屋には椅子がなく困りました。また部屋からの外観は悪く室内が暗いのも困りました。三階までの階段やバリヤフリーもなく年寄りには不向きです。

The staff was very welcoming and even made sure that I (a 6\'4" tall man) had a yukata to wear during our stay. The in-room onsen was amazing, especially with a view overlooking the mountains. This particular ryokan is about 100 years old, so do not expect new, state-of-the-art facilities and instead more classic/traditional rooms. The traditional dinner and breakfast were very fun to try and the staff member attending to us made sure we understood what to do. Overall, a great experience!

Beatiful, very well located, clean ryokan. Service and staff were amazing. Excellent food. Walking distance from Hakone-Yumoto station. Large tatame room, great shower and sauna. Missed a place to sit besides floor chairs, but that is what you sign for when in a traditional ryokan. Would surely be back!

If you’re looking for a traditional Japanese Inn stay, this was fun for a night. As Americans the entire concept was foreign to us but we looked forward to fully immersing ourselves for an evening. If you’re in the same boat as us some recommendations: Be prepared to be a little confused. The slippers are difficult to walk in so it feels silly walking up the stairs to your room however it’s a fun experience. Take it slow although the staff may not be understanding that this is your first time in something as simple as house slippers and trying to keep them on your feet walking up stairs is challenging. The room is empty but it’s fun to experience them setting out dinner then setting out the bedding. Our experience could have been made better would our host have slowed down just a touch. While we were thankful she attempted to speak English with us, she seemed very uncomfortable and did everything extremely fast which only made us, people new to absolutely everything and trying to be respectful, very uncomfortable. An item to note, the superior room’s private onsen was not in the room. You need to leave the room and although very close, you still cannot access directly from your room. All in all a fun 1 night stay to say we did it.

가족 여행으로 우리 부부와 아이 둘, 4인 가족이 이 료칸에 머물렀습니다. 우리가 묵은 방은 큰 방 2개가 미닫이 문으로 붙어 있었고 베란다 공간도 널찍하니 따로 있었고 출입문 앞 공간은 복도처럼 넓게 분리되어 있고 음료와 냉장고 공간, 세면대, 화장실 공간이 널찍 널찍하게 구분되어 있어서 우리 가족이 머물기에 공간이 넓고 깨끗하고 쾌적했습니다. 겨울에 난방도 잘 되어 따뜻했습니다. 저녁에 가이세키 정식도 방으로 직접 서빙해 주셨는데 음식의 종류도 가짓수도 많았고 다 너무 정갈하고 맛있었습니다. 아침도 방에서 먹었는데 푸짐하고 맛있는 식사였습니다. 목욕은 공동 온천을 사용하고 개인 1인 온천은 미리 예약한 시간 동안 사용할 수 있었습니다. 온천 시설이 아주 깨끗하고 넓고 샴푸, 린스, 바디 워시, 스킨, 로숀, 드라이기까지 충분히 잘 갖추어져 있습니다. 아침, 저녁으로 공용 온천을 이용했는데 저녁 식사 후 여탕에서는 저 혼자 한참을 사용했고 아침에 온천할 때는 3명이 같이 이용했습니다. 인테리어도 너무 아름답고 편안하고 정갈하고 친절한 최고의 료칸이었습니다.

Our biggest complaint is the insufficient AC. It was just too hot for us to enjoy our stay and dinning.

This is a very traditional ryokan and although the property is old, they give you a unique experience that you can only get at these kind of place. Staff were very nice and helpful, the room was spacious and the view from the bathroom was just stunning (I love my private onsen), foods were great, its very healthy and special. The area around the ryokan was beautiful, there are gift shops if you walk towards the train station. My only complain was the AC, it was an old AC so it made so much noises that kept me up all night (I’m a light sleeper). The ryokan itself is only 6 minutes walking from train station. I’d recommend this place to anyone wants to try a unique experience of ryokan.

Very happy with the Japanese style stay, dinner and breakfast! We enjoyed it

Beautiful venue, kind and attentive staff that are very welcoming and friendly. Easy to reserve the private onsen and very good amenities. The food was delicious but if you are a traveler with food allergies i would recommend confirming with the staff before and during your stay. They will accommodate your needs, however, we had to remind the staff of my partners food allergies a few times as the menu did not initially follow the food restrictions. I would recommend confirming with your host as they bring in each course.

Loved our stay at this lovely little ryokan. Traditional breakfast and dinner were included and they were delicious. Staff were extremely friendly.

The Taeikan was in a perfect location for getting to the train station and to visit the shops in the area. The food was exceptional!!!!The ambiance was wonderful and we thoroughly enjoyed the onsen. Our hostess was new to Japan and to Yaeikan, but she surpassed any of our expectations. She was excellent!!! I highly recommend Yaeikan!

Very relaxing and enjoyable ryokan experience. They have a private onsen that you can reserve so you can stay with your partner. The staff was great, especially Su, that helped me call my old hotel to see if they had found my lost wallet. Also she was super supportive and nice.

It was a memorable stay for our family. The property is charming and conveniently located near bus tops and train station. The best part of our stay was the staff. Everyone was very welcoming and courteous. We love our grandmother attendant. She was taking good care of us during our stay. She offered to take our family photos after the first dinner was setup in our room and she has a lovely personality. We were constrained by the language barriers but we use gestures to communicate which worked out well. The meals were incredible and they were a work of art. We were spoiled and we will remember the wonderful experience we had at Yaeikan for years to come. I can’t wait to return again.

Excellent staff service and meals, made our first onsen and ryokan experience very memorable!

The location is quiet & peaceful

The location is within 15 walk from the station, very easy to access. Once you enter the hotel, you can feel it is a traditional style one which I love it. The osen is not big but definitely good enough. Also, because it is a small property, you won’t need to share the osen with too many people. The food are great and staff are very nice.

Super close to the train station. The staff were so sweet. We absolutely loved our stay. Food was amazing, views immaculate. The onsens were very nice too. The only thing, which is more for me, but I would have liked an extra pillow. Outside the Ryokan, many many shops and bus stop nearby to take you to lake Ashi

接近百年的日式建築，非常古色古香，早、晚餐都在和室房間食用，非常特別的體驗，餐食非常用心與好吃，份量也不算少，整體來說很棒！

Overall we were disappointed with the hotel. The main reason we chose this hotel was for the half board service (in room dinner, breakfast, and onsen facility). We were highly disappointed with the in room dinner for poor quality and limited varieties of the foods. The breakfast was better. The onsen facility was too small. Our room size is good. But our son’s room is small and old, and the air conditioner is not working. Overall we were disappointed and will not come back to this hotel.

The food was unacceptable and when they said they are cleaning the room they simply flipped the futon in half and left it there. Also we had a friend who was staying at another hotel and he couldn’t come visit us in our room. Overall I would say the Japanese staff was a bit off putting. They should not treat customers like that.

This place is cozy and is suitable for family or couple travelers. The staff were very courteous. We ordered in room dinner and breakfast. The food was delicious and very well presented. I give five stars for the food!

Overall we enjoyed our stay at this hotel. Dinner was served at 6pm which we initially thought was a bit early but there were so many courses it took us ages to eat! Can’t fault the amount of food and despite us both being big eaters, we couldn’t finish it all. The beds were also surprisingly comfortable and breakfast was also big. Some points for improvement given the price: (i) 3pm check in and 10am check out is one of the tightest times we’ve had across our stay (ii) not much choice for dinner time nor 30 minute private onsen (iii) the table in our room was quite damaged and could do with a repaint on the edges. Only something minor but given there was only the table and two chairs in the room to begin with, it really stood out (iv) room was smaller than expected.

The kaiseki dinner and breakfast were the stars of the show. The authentic traditional Japanese inn (ryokan) was very evident in the room and the building's ageless architecture. Although it shows its age, it does so in authenticity, you cannot manufacture the feel and timelessness of Japanese culture. The essence of it is mainly the service, efficient, respectful and loving. Our hostess took care to make us comfortable , well fed, and well informed. With her broken english, she conveyed warmth and excitement as she must have with the many many guests that have come through this classic ryokan. Highly recommended if you're looking for a real ryokan experience in Hakone.

The room is big but dark, and the meals are below average. The cp rate is low compared to the price.

The seasonal food is very good (and quite a lot!) The property has this great rustic feel that I really enjoyed.
